On Life and Conduct

20 ^(A)Wine is a mocker, ^(B)intoxicating drink a brawler,
And whoever ^[a]is intoxicated by it is not wise.
²The terror of a king is like the roaring of a lion;
One who provokes him to anger ^[b]^(C)forfeits his own life.
³^(D)Avoiding strife is an honor for a person,
But any fool will ^[c]quarrel.
⁴The ^[d]^(E)lazy one does not plow after the autumn,
So he ^[e]begs during the harvest and has nothing.
⁵A plan in the heart of a person is like deep water,
But a person of understanding draws it out.
⁶Many a person ^(F)proclaims his own loyalty,
But who can find a ^(G)trustworthy person?
⁷A righteous person who ^(H)walks in his integrity—
^(I)How blessed are his sons after him.
⁸^(J)A king who sits on the throne of justice
^[f]Disperses all evil with his eyes.
⁹^(K)Who can say, “I have cleansed my heart,
I am pure from my sin”?
¹⁰^[g]^(L)Differing weights and differing measures,
Both of them are abominable to the Lord.
¹¹It is by his deeds that a boy ^[h]^(M)distinguishes himself,
If his conduct is pure and right.
¹²The hearing ^(N)ear and the seeing eye,
The Lord has made both of them.
¹³^(O)Do not love sleep, or you will become poor;
Open your eyes, and you will be satisfied with ^[i]food.
¹⁴“Bad, bad,” says the buyer,
But when he goes his way, then he boasts.
¹⁵There is gold, and an abundance of ^[j]jewels;
But lips of knowledge are a more precious thing.
¹⁶Take his garment when he becomes guarantor for a stranger;
And for foreigners, seize a pledge from him.
¹⁷^(P)Bread obtained by a lie is sweet to a person,
But afterward his mouth will be filled with gravel.
¹⁸Prepare ^(Q)plans by consultation,
And ^(R)make war by wise guidance.
¹⁹One who ^(S)goes about as a slanderer reveals secrets;
Therefore do not associate with ^[k]^(T)a gossip.
²⁰He who ^(U)curses his father or his mother,
His ^(V)lamp will go out in time of darkness.
²¹An inheritance gained in a hurry at the beginning
Will not be blessed in the end.
²²^(W)Do not say, “I will repay evil”;
^(X)Wait for the Lord, and He will save you.
²³^[l]^(Y)Differing weights are an abomination to the Lord,
And a ^[m]^(Z)false scale is not good.
²⁴^(AA)A man’s steps are ordained by the Lord;
How then can a person understand his way?
²⁵It is a trap for a person to say carelessly, “It is holy!”
And ^(AB)after the vows to make inquiry.
²⁶A ^(AC)wise king scatters the wicked,
And ^[n]drives a ^(AD)threshing wheel over them.
²⁷The ^[o]^(AE)spirit of a person is the lamp of the Lord,
Searching all the ^[p]innermost parts of his being.
²⁸^[q]Loyalty and ^(AF)truth watch over the king,
And he upholds his throne by ^[r]loyalty.
²⁹The glory of young men is their strength,
And the ^[s]^(AG)honor of old men is their gray hair.
³⁰^(AH)Bruising wounds clean away evil,
And blows cleanse the ^[t]innermost parts.

Put On the New Self

3 Therefore, if you have been ^(A)raised with Christ, keep seeking the things that are above, where Christ is, ^(B)seated at the right hand of God. ²^[a]^(C)Set your minds on the things that are above, not on the things that are on earth. ³For you have ^(D)died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. ⁴When Christ, ^(E)who is our life, is revealed, ^(F)then you also will be revealed with Him in glory.

⁵^(G)Therefore, ^[b]treat ^(H)the parts of your earthly body as dead to ^(I)sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which ^[c]amounts to idolatry. ⁶For it is because of these things that ^(J)the wrath of God is coming ^[d]upon the ^[e]sons of disobedience, ⁷and ^(K)in them you also once walked, when you were living ^[f]in them. ⁸But now you also, ^(L)rid yourselves of all of them: ^(M)anger, wrath, malice, slander, and ^(N)obscene speech from your mouth. ⁹^[g]^(O)Do not lie to one another, since you ^(P)stripped off the old ^[h]self with its evil practices, ¹⁰and have ^(Q)put on the new self, which is being ^[i]^(R)renewed to a true knowledge ^(S)according to the image of the One who ^(T)created it— ¹¹a renewal in which ^(U)there is no distinction between Greek and Jew, ^(V)circumcised and uncircumcised, ^[j]^(W)barbarian, ^[k]Scythian, ^(X)slave, and free, but ^(Y)Christ is all, and in all.

¹²So, as those who have been ^(Z)chosen of God, holy and beloved, ^(AA)put on a ^(AB)heart of compassion, kindness, ^(AC)humility, gentleness, and ^[l]^(AD)patience; ¹³^(AE)bearing with one another, and ^(AF)forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; ^(AG)just as the Lord forgave you, so must you do also. ¹⁴In addition to all these things put on love, which is ^[m]^(AH)the perfect bond of ^(AI)unity. ¹⁵Let ^(AJ)the peace of Christ, to which you were ^[n]indeed called in ^(AK)one body, ^[o]rule in your hearts; and ^[p]be thankful. ¹⁶Let ^(AL)the word of ^[q]Christ richly dwell within you, ^[r]with all wisdom ^(AM)teaching and admonishing ^[s]one another ^(AN)with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, ^(AO)singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God. ¹⁷^(AP)Whatever you do in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, ^(AQ)giving thanks through Him to God the Father.

Family Relations

¹⁸^(AR)Wives, ^(AS)be subject to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. ¹⁹^(AT)Husbands, love your wives and do not become bitter against them. ²⁰^(AU)Children, obey your parents in everything, for this is pleasing ^[t]to the Lord. ²¹^(AV)Fathers, do not ^[u]antagonize your children, so that they will not become discouraged.

²²^[v]^(AW)Slaves, obey those who are your ^[w]human masters in everything, ^(AX)not with ^[x]eye-service, as people-pleasers, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord. ²³Whatever you do, do your work ^[y]heartily, ^(AY)as for the Lord and not for people, ²⁴^(AZ)knowing that it is from the Lord that you will receive the reward ^[z]of ^(BA)the inheritance. It is the Lord Christ whom you ^(BB)serve. ²⁵For ^(BC)the one who does wrong will receive the consequences of the wrong which he has done, and ^[aa]^(BD)that without partiality.
