21 For everyone looks out for their own interests,(A) not those of Jesus Christ. 22 But you know that Timothy has proved himself, because as a son with his father(B) he has served with me in the work of the gospel. 23 I hope, therefore, to send him as soon as I see how things go with me.(C) 24 And I am confident(D) in the Lord that I myself will come soon.

25 But I think it is necessary to send back to you Epaphroditus, my brother, co-worker(E) and fellow soldier,(F) who is also your messenger, whom you sent to take care of my needs.(G) 26 For he longs for all of you(H) and is distressed because you heard he was ill. 27 Indeed he was ill, and almost died. But God had mercy on him, and not on him only but also on me, to spare me sorrow upon sorrow. 28 Therefore I am all the more eager to send him,(I) so that when you see him again you may be glad and I may have less anxiety. 29 So then, welcome him in the Lord with great joy, and honor people like him,(J) 30 because he almost died for the work of Christ. He risked his life to make up for the help you yourselves could not give me.(K)

No Confidence in the Flesh

Further, my brothers and sisters, rejoice in the Lord! It is no trouble for me to write the same things to you again,(L) and it is a safeguard for you. Watch out for those dogs,(M) those evildoers, those mutilators of the flesh. For it is we who are the circumcision,(N) we who serve God by his Spirit, who boast in Christ Jesus,(O) and who put no confidence in the flesh— though I myself have reasons for such confidence.(P)

If someone else thinks they have reasons to put confidence in the flesh, I have more: circumcised(Q) on the eighth day, of the people of Israel,(R) of the tribe of Benjamin,(S) a Hebrew of Hebrews; in regard to the law, a Pharisee;(T) as for zeal,(U) persecuting the church;(V) as for righteousness based on the law,(W) faultless.

But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss(X) for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing(Y) Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ(Z) and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law,(AA) but that which is through faith in[a] Christ—the righteousness(AB) that comes from God on the basis of faith.(AC) 10 I want to know(AD) Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings,(AE) becoming like him in his death,(AF) 11 and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection(AG) from the dead.

Footnotes

  1. Philippians 3:9 Or through the faithfulness of

21 For all seek their own, not the things which are Jesus Christ's.

22 But ye know the proof of him, that, as a son with the father, he hath served with me in the gospel.

23 Him therefore I hope to send presently, so soon as I shall see how it will go with me.

24 But I trust in the Lord that I also myself shall come shortly.

25 Yet I supposed it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother, and companion in labour, and fellowsoldier, but your messenger, and he that ministered to my wants.

26 For he longed after you all, and was full of heaviness, because that ye had heard that he had been sick.

27 For indeed he was sick nigh unto death: but God had mercy on him; and not on him only, but on me also, lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow.

28 I sent him therefore the more carefully, that, when ye see him again, ye may rejoice, and that I may be the less sorrowful.

29 Receive him therefore in the Lord with all gladness; and hold such in reputation:

30 Because for the work of Christ he was nigh unto death, not regarding his life, to supply your lack of service toward me.

Finally, my brethren, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things to you, to me indeed is not grievous, but for you it is safe.

Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the concision.

For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.

Though I might also have confidence in the flesh. If any other man thinketh that he hath whereof he might trust in the flesh, I more:

Circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, an Hebrew of the Hebrews; as touching the law, a Pharisee;

Concerning zeal, persecuting the church; touching the righteousness which is in the law, blameless.

But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ.

Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ,

And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:

10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;

11 If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead.
