Greeting

Paul, (A)a prisoner for Christ Jesus, and (B)Timothy our brother,

To Philemon our beloved fellow worker and Apphia our sister and (C)Archippus our (D)fellow soldier, and (E)the church in your house:

(F)Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Philemon's Love and Faith

(G)I thank my God always when I remember you in my prayers, because I (H)hear of your love and (I)of the faith that you have toward the Lord Jesus and for all the saints, and I pray that the sharing of your faith may become effective for the full (J)knowledge of every good thing that is in us for the sake of Christ.[a] For I have derived much joy and (K)comfort from your love, my brother, because the hearts of the saints (L)have been refreshed through you.

Paul's Plea for Onesimus

Accordingly, (M)though I am bold enough in Christ to command you to do (N)what is required, yet for love's sake I prefer to appeal to you—I, Paul, an old man and now (O)a prisoner also for Christ Jesus— 10 I appeal to you for (P)my child, (Q)Onesimus,[b] (R)whose father I became in my imprisonment. 11 (Formerly he was useless to you, but now he is indeed useful to you and to me.) 12 I am sending him back to you, sending my very heart. 13 I would have been glad to keep him with me, in order that he might serve me (S)on your behalf (T)during my imprisonment for the gospel, 14 but I preferred to do nothing without your consent in order that your goodness might not be (U)by compulsion but of your own accord. 15 For this perhaps is why (V)he was parted from you for a while, that you might have him back forever, 16 (W)no longer as a bondservant[c] but more than a bondservant, as (X)a beloved brother—especially to me, but how much more to you, (Y)both in the flesh and in the Lord.

17 So if you consider me (Z)your partner, receive him as you would receive me. 18 If he has wronged you at all, or owes you anything, charge that to my account. 19 (AA)I, Paul, write this with my own hand: I will repay it—to say nothing of your owing me even your own self. 20 Yes, brother, I want some benefit from you in the Lord. (AB)Refresh my heart in Christ.

21 (AC)Confident of your obedience, I write to you, knowing that you will do even more than I say. 22 At the same time, prepare a guest room for me, for (AD)I am hoping that (AE)through your prayers (AF)I will be graciously given to you.

Final Greetings

23 (AG)Epaphras, my (AH)fellow prisoner in Christ Jesus, sends greetings to you, 24 and so do (AI)Mark, (AJ)Aristarchus, (AK)Demas, and (AL)Luke, my fellow workers.

25 (AM)The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.

The Supremacy of God's Son

Long ago, at many times and (AN)in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but (AO)in these last days (AP)he has spoken to us by (AQ)his Son, whom he appointed (AR)the heir of all things, (AS)through whom also he created (AT)the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and (AU)the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. (AV)After making purification for sins, (AW)he sat down (AX)at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name (AY)he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.

For to which of the angels did God ever say,

(AZ)“You are my Son,
    today I have begotten you”?

Or again,

(BA)“I will be to him a father,
    and he shall be to me a son”?

And again, when he brings (BB)the firstborn into the world, he says,

(BC)“Let all God's angels worship him.”

Of the angels he says,

(BD)“He makes his angels winds,
    and his ministers a flame of fire.”

But of the Son he says,

(BE)“Your throne, O God, is forever and ever,
    the scepter of uprightness is the scepter of your kingdom.
You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness;
therefore God, your God, (BF)has anointed you
    with (BG)the oil of gladness beyond your companions.”

10 And,

(BH)“You, Lord, laid the foundation of the earth in the beginning,
    and the heavens are the work of your hands;
11 they will perish, but you remain;
    they will all wear out like a garment,
12 like a robe you will roll them up,
    like a garment they will be changed.[d]
But you are (BI)the same,
    and your years will have no end.”

13 And to which of the angels has he ever said,

(BJ)“Sit at my right hand
    (BK)until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet”?

14 Are they not all ministering spirits (BL)sent out to serve for the sake of those who are to (BM)inherit salvation?

Warning Against Neglecting Salvation

Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. For since (BN)the message declared by angels proved to be reliable, and (BO)every transgression or disobedience received a just (BP)retribution, (BQ)how shall we escape if we (BR)neglect such a great salvation? It was (BS)declared at first by the Lord, and it was (BT)attested to us (BU)by those who heard, (BV)while God also bore witness (BW)by signs and wonders and various miracles and by (BX)gifts of the Holy Spirit (BY)distributed according to his will.

The Founder of Salvation

For it was not to angels that God subjected the world (BZ)to come, of which we are speaking. It has been testified somewhere,

(CA)“What is man, that you are mindful of him,
    or the son of man, that you care for him?
You made him for a little while lower than the angels;
    you have crowned him with glory and honor,[e]
    putting everything in subjection under his feet.”

Now in putting everything in subjection to him, he left nothing outside his control. At present, (CB)we do not yet see everything in subjection to him. But we see him (CC)who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, (CD)crowned with glory and honor (CE)because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might (CF)taste death (CG)for everyone.

10 For it (CH)was fitting that he, (CI)for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons (CJ)to glory, should make the (CK)founder of their salvation (CL)perfect through suffering. 11 For (CM)he who sanctifies and (CN)those who are sanctified (CO)all have one source.[f] That is why he is not ashamed to call them (CP)brothers,[g] 12 saying,

(CQ)“I will tell of your name to my brothers;
    in the midst of the (CR)congregation I will sing your praise.”

13 And again,

(CS)“I will put my trust in him.”

And again,

(CT)“Behold, I and the children (CU)God has given me.”

14 Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise (CV)partook of the same things, that (CW)through death he might (CX)destroy (CY)the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and deliver all those who (CZ)through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery. 16 For surely it is not angels that he helps, but he (DA)helps the offspring of Abraham. 17 Therefore he had (DB)to be made like his brothers in every respect, (DC)so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest (DD)in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. 18 For because he himself has suffered (DE)when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.

Jesus Greater Than Moses

Therefore, holy brothers,[h] you who share in (DF)a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, (DG)the apostle and high priest of our confession, who was faithful to him who appointed him, (DH)just as Moses also was faithful in all God's[i] house. For Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses—as much more glory as the builder of a house has more honor than the house itself. (For every house is built by someone, but (DI)the builder of all things is God.) (DJ)Now Moses was faithful in all God's house (DK)as a servant, (DL)to testify to the things that were to be spoken later, but Christ is faithful over God's house as (DM)a son. And (DN)we are his house, if indeed we (DO)hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope.[j]

A Rest for the People of God

Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says,

(DP)“Today, if you hear his voice,
do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion,
    on the day of testing in the wilderness,
where your fathers put me to the test
    and saw my works for (DQ)forty years.
10 Therefore I was provoked with that generation,
and said, ‘They always go astray in their heart;
    they have not known my ways.’
11 (DR)As I swore in my wrath,
    ‘They shall not enter my rest.’”

12 Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from (DS)the living God. 13 But (DT)exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by (DU)the deceitfulness of sin. 14 For we have come to share in Christ, (DV)if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end. 15 As it is said,

(DW)“Today, if you hear his voice,
do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”

16 For (DX)who were those who heard and yet rebelled? Was it not (DY)all those who left Egypt led by Moses? 17 And with whom was he provoked for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, (DZ)whose bodies fell in the wilderness? 18 And to whom did he swear that (EA)they would not enter his rest, but to those who were disobedient? 19 So we see that (EB)they were unable to enter because of unbelief.

Paul, a prisoner(A) of Christ Jesus, and Timothy(B) our brother,(C)

To Philemon our dear friend and fellow worker(D) also to Apphia our sister and Archippus(E) our fellow soldier(F)—and to the church that meets in your home:(G)

Grace and peace to you[a] from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.(H)

Thanksgiving and Prayer

I always thank my God(I) as I remember you in my prayers,(J) because I hear about your love for all his holy people(K) and your faith in the Lord Jesus.(L) I pray that your partnership with us in the faith may be effective in deepening your understanding of every good thing we share for the sake of Christ. Your love has given me great joy and encouragement,(M) because you, brother, have refreshed(N) the hearts of the Lord’s people.

Paul’s Plea for Onesimus

Therefore, although in Christ I could be bold and order you to do what you ought to do, yet I prefer to appeal to you(O) on the basis of love. It is as none other than Paul—an old man and now also a prisoner(P) of Christ Jesus— 10 that I appeal to you for my son(Q) Onesimus,[b](R) who became my son while I was in chains.(S) 11 Formerly he was useless to you, but now he has become useful both to you and to me.

12 I am sending him—who is my very heart—back to you. 13 I would have liked to keep him with me so that he could take your place in helping me while I am in chains(T) for the gospel. 14 But I did not want to do anything without your consent, so that any favor you do would not seem forced(U) but would be voluntary. 15 Perhaps the reason he was separated from you for a little while was that you might have him back forever— 16 no longer as a slave,(V) but better than a slave, as a dear brother.(W) He is very dear to me but even dearer to you, both as a fellow man and as a brother in the Lord.

17 So if you consider me a partner,(X) welcome him as you would welcome me. 18 If he has done you any wrong or owes you anything, charge it to me.(Y) 19 I, Paul, am writing this with my own hand.(Z) I will pay it back—not to mention that you owe me your very self. 20 I do wish, brother, that I may have some benefit from you in the Lord; refresh(AA) my heart in Christ. 21 Confident(AB) of your obedience, I write to you, knowing that you will do even more than I ask.

22 And one thing more: Prepare a guest room for me, because I hope to be(AC) restored to you in answer to your prayers.(AD)

23 Epaphras,(AE) my fellow prisoner(AF) in Christ Jesus, sends you greetings. 24 And so do Mark,(AG) Aristarchus,(AH) Demas(AI) and Luke, my fellow workers.(AJ)

25 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.(AK)

God’s Final Word: His Son

In the past God spoke(AL) to our ancestors through the prophets(AM) at many times and in various ways,(AN) but in these last days(AO) he has spoken to us by his Son,(AP) whom he appointed heir(AQ) of all things, and through whom(AR) also he made the universe.(AS) The Son is the radiance of God’s glory(AT) and the exact representation of his being,(AU) sustaining all things(AV) by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins,(AW) he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.(AX) So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs.(AY)

The Son Superior to Angels

For to which of the angels did God ever say,

“You are my Son;
    today I have become your Father”[c]?(AZ)

Or again,

“I will be his Father,
    and he will be my Son”[d]?(BA)

And again, when God brings his firstborn(BB) into the world,(BC) he says,

“Let all God’s angels worship him.”[e](BD)

In speaking of the angels he says,

“He makes his angels spirits,
    and his servants flames of fire.”[f](BE)

But about the Son he says,

“Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever;(BF)
    a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom.
You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness;
    therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions(BG)
    by anointing you with the oil(BH) of joy.”[g](BI)

10 He also says,

“In the beginning, Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth,
    and the heavens are the work of your hands.(BJ)
11 They will perish, but you remain;
    they will all wear out like a garment.(BK)
12 You will roll them up like a robe;
    like a garment they will be changed.
But you remain the same,(BL)
    and your years will never end.”[h](BM)

13 To which of the angels did God ever say,

“Sit at my right hand(BN)
    until I make your enemies
    a footstool(BO) for your feet”[i]?(BP)

14 Are not all angels ministering spirits(BQ) sent to serve those who will inherit(BR) salvation?(BS)

Warning to Pay Attention

We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.(BT) For since the message spoken(BU) through angels(BV) was binding, and every violation and disobedience received its just punishment,(BW) how shall we escape if we ignore so great a salvation?(BX) This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord,(BY) was confirmed to us by those who heard him.(BZ) God also testified to it by signs, wonders and various miracles,(CA) and by gifts of the Holy Spirit(CB) distributed according to his will.(CC)

Jesus Made Fully Human

It is not to angels that he has subjected the world to come, about which we are speaking. But there is a place where someone(CD) has testified:

“What is mankind that you are mindful of them,
    a son of man that you care for him?(CE)
You made them a little[j] lower than the angels;
    you crowned them with glory and honor
    and put everything under their feet.”[k][l](CF)

In putting everything under them,[m] God left nothing that is not subject to them.[n] Yet at present we do not see everything subject to them.[o] But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor(CG) because he suffered death,(CH) so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.(CI)

10 In bringing many sons and daughters to glory, it was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists,(CJ) should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through what he suffered.(CK) 11 Both the one who makes people holy(CL) and those who are made holy(CM) are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters.[p](CN) 12 He says,

“I will declare your name to my brothers and sisters;
    in the assembly I will sing your praises.”[q](CO)

13 And again,

“I will put my trust in him.”[r](CP)

And again he says,

“Here am I, and the children God has given me.”[s](CQ)

14 Since the children have flesh and blood,(CR) he too shared in their humanity(CS) so that by his death he might break the power(CT) of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil(CU) 15 and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear(CV) of death. 16 For surely it is not angels he helps, but Abraham’s descendants.(CW) 17 For this reason he had to be made like them,[t](CX) fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful(CY) and faithful high priest(CZ) in service to God,(DA) and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people.(DB) 18 Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.(DC)

Jesus Greater Than Moses

Therefore, holy brothers and sisters,(DD) who share in the heavenly calling,(DE) fix your thoughts on Jesus, whom we acknowledge(DF) as our apostle and high priest.(DG) He was faithful to the one who appointed him, just as Moses was faithful in all God’s house.(DH) Jesus has been found worthy of greater honor than Moses,(DI) just as the builder of a house has greater honor than the house itself. For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything.(DJ) “Moses was faithful as a servant(DK) in all God’s house,”[u](DL) bearing witness to what would be spoken by God in the future. But Christ is faithful as the Son(DM) over God’s house. And we are his house,(DN) if indeed we hold firmly(DO) to our confidence and the hope(DP) in which we glory.

Warning Against Unbelief

So, as the Holy Spirit says:(DQ)

“Today, if you hear his voice,
    do not harden your hearts(DR)
as you did in the rebellion,
    during the time of testing in the wilderness,
where your ancestors tested and tried me,
    though for forty years they saw what I did.(DS)
10 That is why I was angry with that generation;
    I said, ‘Their hearts are always going astray,
    and they have not known my ways.’
11 So I declared on oath in my anger,(DT)
    ‘They shall never enter my rest.’ (DU)[v](DV)

12 See to it, brothers and sisters, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God.(DW) 13 But encourage one another daily,(DX) as long as it is called “Today,” so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.(DY) 14 We have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold(DZ) our original conviction firmly to the very end.(EA) 15 As has just been said:

“Today, if you hear his voice,
    do not harden your hearts
    as you did in the rebellion.”[w](EB)

16 Who were they who heard and rebelled? Were they not all those Moses led out of Egypt?(EC) 17 And with whom was he angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies perished in the wilderness?(ED) 18 And to whom did God swear that they would never enter his rest(EE) if not to those who disobeyed?(EF) 19 So we see that they were not able to enter, because of their unbelief.(EG)
