Greeting

1 From Paul and Timothy, slaves of Christ Jesus.

To all those in Philippi who are God’s people in Christ Jesus, along with your supervisors^[a] and servants.^[b]

²May the grace and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

Thanksgiving and prayer

³I thank my God every time I mention you in my prayers. ⁴I’m thankful for all of you every time I pray, and it’s always a prayer full of joy. ⁵I’m glad because of the way you have been my partners in the ministry of the gospel from the time you first believed it until now. ⁶I’m sure about this: the one who started a good work in you will stay with you to complete the job by the day of Christ Jesus. ⁷I have good reason to think this way about all of you because I keep you in my heart. You are all my partners in God’s grace, both during my time in prison and in the defense and support of the gospel. ⁸God is my witness that I feel affection for all of you with the compassion of Christ Jesus.

⁹This is my prayer: that your love might become even more and more rich with knowledge and all kinds of insight. ¹⁰I pray this so that you will be able to decide what really matters and so you will be sincere and blameless on the day of Christ.

111 Praise the Lord!
    I thank the Lord with all my heart
    in the company of those who do right, in the congregation.
²The works of the Lord are magnificent;
    they are treasured by all who desire them.
³God’s deeds are majestic and glorious.
    God’s righteousness stands forever.
⁴God is famous for his wondrous works.
    The Lord is full of mercy and compassion.
⁵God gives food to those who honor him.
    God remembers his covenant forever.
⁶God proclaimed his powerful deeds to his people
    and gave them what had belonged to other nations.
⁷God’s handiwork is honesty and justice;
    all God’s rules are trustworthy—
⁸        they are established always and forever:
        they are fulfilled with truth and right doing.
⁹God sent redemption for his people;
    God commanded that his covenant last forever.
        Holy and awesome is God’s name!
¹⁰Fear of the Lord is where wisdom begins;
    sure knowledge is for all who keep God’s laws.
        God’s praise lasts forever!

Healing on the Sabbath

14 One Sabbath, when Jesus went to share a meal in the home of one of the leaders of the Pharisees, they were watching him closely. ²A man suffering from an abnormal swelling of the body was there. ³Jesus asked the lawyers and Pharisees, “Does the Law allow healing on the Sabbath or not?” ⁴But they said nothing. Jesus took hold of the sick man, cured him, and then let him go. ⁵He said to them, “Suppose your child or ox fell into a ditch on the Sabbath day. Wouldn’t you immediately pull it out?” ⁶But they had no response.
