Joy and Peace. Rejoice[a] in the Lord always. I shall say it again: rejoice!(A) Your kindness[b] should be known to all. The Lord is near.(B) Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God.(C) Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.(D)

(E)Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.[c] Keep on doing what you have learned and received and heard and seen in me.(F) Then the God of peace will be with you.[d]

Footnotes

  1. 4:4 Rejoice: see note on Phil 3:1.
  2. 4:5 Kindness: considerateness, forbearance, fairness. The Lord is near: most likely a reference to Christ’s parousia (Phil 1:6, 10; 3:20–21; 1 Cor 16:22), although some sense an echo of Ps 119:151 and the perpetual presence of the Lord.
  3. 4:8 The language employs terms from Roman Stoic thought.
  4. 4:9 Cf. note on Phil 3:17.

11 He who consecrates and those who are being consecrated all have one origin. Therefore, he is not ashamed to call them “brothers,” 12 saying:

“I will proclaim your name to my brothers,
    in the midst of the assembly I will praise you”;(A)

13 and again:

“I will put my trust in him”;

and again:

“Behold, I and the children God has given me.”(B)

14 Now since the children share in blood and flesh, he likewise shared in them, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil,(C) 15 and free those who through fear of death had been subject to slavery all their life. 16 Surely he did not help angels but rather the descendants of Abraham; 17 therefore, he had to become like his brothers in every way, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest before God to expiate the sins of the people.(D) 18 Because he himself was tested through what he suffered, he is able to help those who are being tested.
