⁵ circumcised^(A) on the eighth day, of the people of Israel,^(B) of the tribe of Benjamin,^(C) a Hebrew of Hebrews; in regard to the law, a Pharisee;^(D)

²² Are they Hebrews? So am I.^(A) Are they Israelites? So am I.^(B) Are they Abraham’s descendants? So am I.^(C)

The Remnant of Israel

11 I ask then: Did God reject his people? By no means!^(A) I am an Israelite myself, a descendant of Abraham,^(B) from the tribe of Benjamin.^(C)

⁶ Then Paul, knowing that some of them were Sadducees^(A) and the others Pharisees, called out in the Sanhedrin, “My brothers,^(B) I am a Pharisee,^(C) descended from Pharisees. I stand on trial because of the hope of the resurrection of the dead.”^(D)

⁴ “The Jewish people all know the way I have lived ever since I was a child,^(A) from the beginning of my life in my own country, and also in Jerusalem. ⁵ They have known me for a long time^(B) and can testify, if they are willing, that I conformed to the strictest sect^(C) of our religion, living as a Pharisee.^(D)

³ “I am a Jew,^(A) born in Tarsus^(B) of Cilicia,^(C) but brought up in this city. I studied under^(D) Gamaliel^(E) and was thoroughly trained in the law of our ancestors.^(F) I was just as zealous^(G) for God as any of you are today.

¹² For the generations to come^(A) every male among you who is eight days old must be circumcised,^(B) including those born in your household or bought with money from a foreigner—those who are not your offspring.

²¹ Jesus said to them, “I did one miracle,^(A) and you are all amazed. ²² Yet, because Moses gave you circumcision^(B) (though actually it did not come from Moses, but from the patriarchs),^(C) you circumcise a boy on the Sabbath. ²³ Now if a boy can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses may not be broken, why are you angry with me for healing a man’s whole body on the Sabbath? ²⁴ Stop judging by mere appearances, but instead judge correctly.”^(D)

⁵⁹ On the eighth day they came to circumcise^(A) the child, and they were going to name him after his father Zechariah,
