‒ 6 ‒
23 Kon mokaon ka uban sa usa ka pangulo, pagbantay pag-ayo sa imong lihok. 2 Kon kusog kang mokaon, pugngi ang imong kaugalingon. 3 Ayaw kaibog sa lamiang pagkaon nga iyang gidalit, kay basig gipanid-an niya ang imong pamatasan.

4 Ayaw hagoa ang imong kaugalingon sa labihang pagpaninguha nga maadunahan. Pagkat-on hinuon sa pagpugong sa kaugalingon ug sa paghunahuna kon unsay ensakto. 5 Ang bahandi mawala sa usa lang ka pagpamilok, nga daw sa aduna kini pako ug molupad palayo sama sa agila.

6 Ayaw pagkaon ni kaibog sa pagkaon nga giandam sa kuripot nga tawo, bisan ug lamian pa kini. 7 Kay ang tawo nga sama niana maniid kon unsa kadaghan imong gikaon.[a] Moingon siya, “Sige, kaon pa.” Apan dili diay kinasingkasing ang iyang gisulti. 8 Busa isuka mo ang imong gikaon ug sayang lang ang imong mga pagdayeg kaniya.

9 Ayaw pakigsulti sa mga buang-buang, kay bisag puno sa kaalam ang imong isulti wala lang gihapon kini pulos alang kanila.

10 Ayaw iloga ang yuta sa mga ilo pinaagi sa pagbalhin sa karaan nga mga muhon niini. 11 Kay ang Ginoo mao ang ilang gamhanan nga tigpanalipod. Siya ang molaban kanila batok kanimo.

12 Pamati kon ginatul-id ang imong pamatasan aron makakat-on ka.
‒ 12 ‒
13-14 Ayaw pagduhaduha sa pagdisiplina sa imong anak. Ang pagbunal dili makapatay kaniya, makaluwas pa hinuon kini kaniya gikan sa kamatayon.

15-16 Anak, malipay gayod ako kon magmaalamon ka ug kon husto ang imong ginapamulong.
‒ 14 ‒
17 Ayaw kasina sa mga makasasala; tahora hinuon sa kanunay ang Ginoo. 18 Ug siguro gayod nga may maayo kang kaugmaon, ug dili mapakyas ang imong mga tinguha.

19 Anak, pamati sa mga ginapanudlo ko kanimo. Pagmaalamon ug sunda ang husto nga dalan. 20-21 Ayaw sunda ang mga palahubog ug ang mga hangol ug kaon, kay kanang klaseha sa mga tawo daling mapobre. Sige lang silag katulog, ug magkagidlay sila sa kaulahian.

22 Paminaw sa imong ginikanan nga maoy nagpakatawo kanimo ug ayaw sila bugalbugali kon tigulang na sila. 23 Paninguhaa nga maangkon mo ang kamatuoran, kaalam, saktong pamatasan, ug maayong panabot. Ug ayaw gayod kini ibaylo sa bisan unsang butang. 24-25 Malipay gayod ang imong ginikanan kon matarong ka ug maalamon. Ikalipay nila nga sila nahimong imong amahan ug inahan.

26 Anak, pamati pag-ayo kanako, ug sunda ang akong pagkinabuhi. 27 Kay ang babayeng nagabaligya sa iyang dungog makadaot kanimo sama sa lawom kaayo nga bangag. 28 Sama siya sa tulisan nga mag-atang ug mabiktima, ug siya ang hinungdan sa pagluib sa daghang mga bana sa ilang mga asawa.

29 Kinsay tawo nga miserable? Kinsay palaaway? Kinsay reklamador? Kinsay makulatahan nga mahimo ra untang likayan? Kinsay kanunayng magpula ang mata? 30 Siya ang tawo nga palahubog, ug mahiligon sa pagtilaw sa nagkalain-laing matang sa bino. 31 Ayaw pagpadani sa isog nga bino, nga makalaway tan-awon sulod sa baso, ug daw kalami imnon. 32 Kay pagkahuman mo ug inom niini, bation mo nga daw sa gipaak ka sa malala nga bitin, 33 ug bisan unsa na lay imong makita, ug dili ka na makahunahuna ug maayo. 34 Paminaw mo morag nagsakay kag barko ug naghigda ibabaw sa palo.[b] 35 Moingon ka, “May mibunal ug misumbag kanako, apan wala ako makabatig sakit. Kanus-a pa kaha ako mahuwasi aron makainom na pod ko?”

23 When you sit to dine with a ruler,
note well what[a] is before you,
2 and put a knife to your throat
if you are given to gluttony.
3 Do not crave his delicacies,(A)
for that food is deceptive.

4 Do not wear yourself out to get rich;
do not trust your own cleverness.
5 Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone,(B)
for they will surely sprout wings
and fly off to the sky like an eagle.(C)

6 Do not eat the food of a begrudging host,
do not crave his delicacies;(D)
7 for he is the kind of person
who is always thinking about the cost.[b]
“Eat and drink,” he says to you,
but his heart is not with you.
8 You will vomit up the little you have eaten
and will have wasted your compliments.

9 Do not speak to fools,
for they will scorn your prudent words.(E)

10 Do not move an ancient boundary stone(F)
or encroach on the fields of the fatherless,

Who has needless bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes?

who go to sample bowls of mixed wine.
31 Do not gaze at wine when it is red,
when it sparkles in the cup,
when it goes down smoothly!
32 In the end it bites like a snake
and poisons like a viper.
33 Your eyes will see strange sights,
and your mind will imagine confusing things.
34 You will be like one sleeping on the high seas,
lying on top of the rigging.
35 “They hit me,” you will say, “but I’m not hurt!
They beat me, but I don’t feel it!
When will I wake up
so I can find another drink?”(AA)

If you are a man given to appetite.
3 Do not desire his delicacies,
For they are deceptive food.
4 (A)Do not overwork to be rich;
(B)Because of your own understanding, cease!
5 [a]Will you set your eyes on that which is not?
For riches certainly make themselves wings;
They fly away like an eagle toward heaven.
6 Do not eat the bread of (C)a[b] miser,
Nor desire his delicacies;
7 For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.
“Eat and drink!” (D)he says to you,
But his heart is not with you.
8 The morsel you have eaten, you will vomit up,
And waste your pleasant words.

For he will despise the wisdom of your words.

32 At the last it bites like a serpent,
And stings like a viper.
33 Your eyes will see strange things,
And your heart will utter perverse things.
34 Yes, you will be like one who lies down in the [h]midst of the sea,
Or like one who lies at the top of the mast, saying:
35 “They(U) have struck me, but I was not hurt;
They have beaten me, but I did not feel it.
When shall (V)I awake, that I may seek another drink?”
