²³Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.^(I) ²⁴For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it.^(J) ²⁵What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit their very self?

On Not Loving the World

¹⁵Do not love the world or anything in the world.^(A) If anyone loves the world, love for the Father^[a] is not in them.^(B) ¹⁶For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh,^(C) the lust of the eyes,^(D) and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. ¹⁷The world and its desires pass away,^(E) but whoever does the will of God^(F) lives forever.
