Psalms 90–106

The Eternity of God, and Man’s Frailty

A Prayer ^(A)of Moses the man of God.

90 Lord, ^(B)You have been our ^[a]dwelling place in all generations.
²^(C)Before the mountains were brought forth,
Or ever You ^[b]had formed the earth and the world,
Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.

³You turn man to destruction,
And say, ^(D)“Return, O children of men.”
⁴^(E)For a thousand years in Your sight
Are like yesterday when it is past,
And like a watch in the night.
⁵You carry them away like a flood;
^(F)They are like a sleep.
In the morning ^(G)they are like grass which grows up:
⁶In the morning it flourishes and grows up;
In the evening it is cut down and withers.

⁷For we have been consumed by Your anger,
And by Your wrath we are terrified.
⁸^(H)You have set our iniquities before You,
Our ^(I)secret sins in the light of Your countenance.
⁹For all our days have passed away in Your wrath;
We finish our years like a sigh.
¹⁰The days of our lives are seventy years;
And if by reason of strength they are eighty years,
Yet their boast is only labor and sorrow;
For it is soon cut off, and we fly away.
¹¹Who knows the power of Your anger?
For as the fear of You, so is Your wrath.
¹²^(J)So teach us to number our days,
That we may gain a heart of wisdom.

¹³Return, O Lord!
How long?
And ^(K)have compassion on Your servants.
¹⁴Oh, satisfy us early with Your mercy,
^(L)That we may rejoice and be glad all our days!
¹⁵Make us glad according to the days in which You have afflicted us,
The years in which we have seen evil.
¹⁶Let ^(M)Your work appear to Your servants,
And Your glory to their children.
¹⁷^(N)And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us,
And ^(O)establish the work of our hands for us;
Yes, establish the work of our hands.

Safety of Abiding in the Presence of God

91 He ^(A)who dwells in the secret place of the Most High
Shall abide ^(B)under the shadow of the Almighty.
²^(C)I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress;
My God, in Him I will trust.”

³Surely ^(D)He shall deliver you from the snare of the ^[a]fowler
And from the perilous pestilence.
⁴^(E)He shall cover you with His feathers,
And under His wings you shall take refuge;
His truth shall be your shield and ^[b]buckler.
⁵^(F)You shall not be afraid of the terror by night,
Nor of the arrow that flies by day,
⁶Nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness,
Nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday.

⁷A thousand may fall at your side,
And ten thousand at your right hand;
But it shall not come near you.
⁸Only ^(G)with your eyes shall you look,
And see the reward of the wicked.

⁹Because you have made the Lord, who is ^(H)my refuge,
Even the Most High, ^(I)your dwelling place,
¹⁰^(J)No evil shall befall you,
Nor shall any plague come near your dwelling;
¹¹^(K)For He shall give His angels charge over you,
To keep you in all your ways.
¹²In their hands they shall ^[c]bear you up,
^(L)Lest you ^[d]dash your foot against a stone.
¹³You shall tread upon the lion and the cobra,
The young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot.

¹⁴“Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him;
I will ^[e]set him on high, because he has ^(M)known My name.
¹⁵He shall ^(N)call upon Me, and I will answer him;
I will be ^(O)with him in trouble;
I will deliver him and honor him.
¹⁶With ^[f]long life I will satisfy him,
And show him My salvation.”

Praise to the Lord for His Love and Faithfulness

A Psalm. A Song for the Sabbath day.

92 It is ^(A)good to give thanks to the Lord,
And to sing praises to Your name, O Most High;
²To ^(B)declare Your lovingkindness in the morning,
And Your faithfulness every night,
³^(C)On an instrument of ten strings,
On the lute,
And on the harp,
With harmonious sound.
⁴For You, Lord, have made me glad through Your work;
I will triumph in the works of Your hands.

⁵^(D)O Lord, how great are Your works!
^(E)Your thoughts are very deep.
⁶^(F)A senseless man does not know,
Nor does a fool understand this.
⁷When ^(G)the wicked ^[a]spring up like grass,
And when all the workers of iniquity flourish,
It is that they may be destroyed forever.

⁸^(H)But You, Lord, are on high forevermore.
⁹For behold, Your enemies, O Lord,
For behold, Your enemies shall perish;
All the workers of iniquity shall ^(I)be scattered.

¹⁰But ^(J)my ^[b]horn You have exalted like a wild ox;
I have been ^(K)anointed with fresh oil.
¹¹^(L)My eye also has seen my desire on my enemies;
My ears hear my desire on the wicked
Who rise up against me.

¹²^(M)The righteous shall flourish like a palm tree,
He shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon.
¹³Those who are planted in the house of the Lord
Shall flourish in the courts of our God.
¹⁴They shall still bear fruit in old age;
They shall be ^[c]fresh and ^[d]flourishing,
¹⁵To declare that the Lord is upright;
^(N)He is my rock, and ^(O)there is no unrighteousness in Him.

Romans 11:1-21

Israel’s Rejection Not Total

11 I say then, ^(A)has God cast away His people? ^(B)Certainly not! For ^(C)I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin. ²God has not cast away His people whom ^(D)He foreknew. Or do you not know what the Scripture says of Elijah, how he pleads with God against Israel, saying, ³^(E)“Lord, they have killed Your prophets and torn down Your altars, and I alone am left, and they seek my life”? ⁴But what does the divine response say to him? ^(F)“I have reserved for Myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal.” ⁵^(G)Even so then, at this present time there is a remnant according to the election of grace. ⁶And ^(H)if by grace, then it is no longer of works; otherwise grace is no longer grace. ^[a]But if it is of works, it is no longer grace; otherwise work is no longer work.

⁷What then? ^(I)Israel has not obtained what it seeks; but the elect have obtained it, and the rest were ^(J)blinded. ⁸Just as it is written:

^(K)“God has given them a spirit of stupor,
^(L)Eyes that they should not see
And ears that they should not hear,
To this very day.”

⁹And David says:

^(M)“Let their table become a snare and a trap,
A stumbling block and a recompense to them.
¹⁰Let their eyes be darkened, so that they do not see,
And bow down their back always.”

Israel’s Rejection Not Final

¹¹I say then, have they stumbled that they should fall? Certainly not! But ^(N)through their ^[b]fall, to provoke them to ^(O)jealousy, salvation has come to the Gentiles. ¹²Now if their ^[c]fall is riches for the world, and their failure riches for the Gentiles, how much more their fullness!

¹³For I speak to you Gentiles; inasmuch as ^(P)I am an apostle to the Gentiles, I magnify my ministry, ¹⁴if by any means I may provoke to jealousy those who are my flesh and ^(Q)save some of them. ¹⁵For if their being cast away is the reconciling of the world, what will their acceptance be ^(R)but life from the dead?

¹⁶For if ^(S)the firstfruit is holy, the lump is also holy; and if the root is holy, so are the branches. ¹⁷And if ^(T)some of the branches were broken off, ^(U)and you, being a wild olive tree, were grafted in among them, and with them became a partaker of the root and ^[d]fatness of the olive tree, ¹⁸^(V)do not boast against the branches. But if you do boast, remember that you do not support the root, but the root supports you.

¹⁹You will say then, “Branches were broken off that I might be grafted in.” ²⁰Well said. Because of ^(W)unbelief they were broken off, and you stand by faith. Do not be haughty, but fear. ²¹For if God did not spare the natural branches, He may not spare you either.
