Infidelidad del pueblo

2 [a]Digan a sus hermanos: «Ammí[b]», y a sus hermanas: «Ruhamá[c]».

2 «Discutan con su madre(A), discutan,
Porque ella no es mi mujer(B), y Yo no soy su marido;
Que quite, pues, de su rostro sus prostituciones(C),
Y sus adulterios de entre sus pechos;
3 No sea que Yo la desnude completamente(D)
Y la deje como el día en que nació(E),
Y la ponga como un desierto(F),
La reduzca a tierra seca
Y la mate de sed(G).
4 -»Tampoco tendré compasión de sus hijos,
Porque son hijos de prostitución(H),
5 Pues su madre se prostituyó;
La que los concibió se deshonró,
Porque dijo: “Iré tras mis amantes(I),
Que me dan mi pan y mi agua(J),
Mi lana y mi lino, mi aceite y mi bebida(K)”.
6 -»Por tanto, voy a cercar su camino(L) con espinos(M),
Y levantaré un muro contra ella para que no encuentre sus senderos(N).
7 -»Ella seguirá a sus amantes, pero no los alcanzará(O);
Los buscará, pero no los hallará.
Entonces dirá: “Iré y volveré(P) a mi primer marido(Q),
Porque mejor me iba entonces que ahora(R)”.
8 ¶»Pues ella no sabía(S) que era Yo el que le daba el trigo, el vino nuevo y el aceite(T),
Y le prodigaba la plata y el oro,
Que ellos usaban para Baal.
9 -»Por tanto, volveré a tomar Mi trigo a su tiempo
Y Mi vino nuevo a su sazón(U).
También me llevaré Mi lana y Mi lino
Que le di para que cubriera su desnudez.
10 -»Y entonces descubriré su vergüenza(V)
Ante los ojos de sus amantes,
Y nadie la librará de Mi mano.
11 -»Haré cesar también todo su regocijo(W),
Sus fiestas, sus lunas nuevas, sus días de reposo,
Y todas sus solemnidades(X).
12 -»Devastaré sus vides y sus higueras(Y),
De las cuales decía ella: “Son la paga
Que mis amantes me han dado”.
Y las convertiré en matorral(Z),
Y las devorarán las bestias del campo(AA).
13 -»La castigaré por los días de los Baales(AB)
Cuando ella les ofrecía sacrificios(AC)
Y se adornaba con sus zarcillos y joyas(AD),
Y se iba tras sus amantes, y se olvidaba de Mí(AE)», declara el Señor.

Dios se desposará con Su pueblo

14 ¶«Por tanto, voy a seducirla,
Llevarla al desierto(AF),
Y hablarle al corazón.
15 -»Allí le daré sus viñas(AG),
Y el valle de Acor(AH) por puerta de esperanza.
Y allí cantará como en los días de su juventud(AI),
Como en el día en que subió de la tierra de Egipto(AJ).
16 -»Sucederá en aquel día», declara el Señor,
«Que me llamarás Ishí[d](AK)
Y no me llamarás más Baalí[e].
17 -»Porque quitaré de su boca los nombres de los Baales,
Y nunca más serán mencionados por sus nombres(AL).
18 -»En aquel día haré también un pacto por ellos
Con las bestias del campo(AM),
Con las aves del cielo
Y con los reptiles de la tierra.
Quitaré de la tierra el arco, la espada y la guerra(AN),
Y haré que ellos duerman seguros(AO).
19 -»Te desposaré conmigo para siempre(AP);
Sí, te desposaré conmigo en justicia y en derecho,
En misericordia y en compasión(AQ);
20 Te desposaré conmigo en fidelidad,
Y tú conocerás al Señor(AR).
21 ¶»Y sucederá que en aquel día Yo responderé», declara el Señor,
«Responderé a los cielos, y ellos responderán a la tierra(AS),
22 Y la tierra responderá al trigo, al vino nuevo y al aceite(AT),
Y ellos responderán a Jezreel[f].
23 -»La sembraré para Mí en la tierra(AU),
Y tendré compasión de la que no recibió compasión[g](AV),
Y diré al que no era Mi pueblo[h](AW):
“Tú eres Mi pueblo(AX)”,
Y él dirá: “Tú eres mi Dios”».

2 “Rename your brothers ‘God’s Somebody.’
    Rename your sisters ‘All Mercy.’

Wild Weekends and Unholy Holidays

2-13 “Haul your mother into court. Accuse her!
    She’s no longer my wife.
    I’m no longer her husband.
Tell her to quit dressing like a whore,
    displaying her breasts for sale.
If she refuses, I’ll rip off her clothes
    and expose her, naked as a newborn.
I’ll turn her skin into dried-out leather,
    her body into a badlands landscape,
    a rack of bones in the desert.
I’ll have nothing to do with her children,
    born one and all in a whorehouse.
Face it: Your mother’s been a whore,
    bringing bastard children into the world.
She said, ‘I’m off to see my lovers!
    They’ll wine and dine me,
Dress and caress me,
    perfume and adorn me!’
But I’ll fix her: I’ll dump her in a field of thistles,
    then lose her in a dead-end alley.
She’ll go on the hunt for her lovers
    but not bring down a single one.
She’ll look high and low
    but won’t find a one. Then she’ll say,
‘I’m going back to my husband, the one I started out with.
    That was a better life by far than this one.’
She didn’t know that it was I all along
    who wined and dined and adorned her,
That I was the one who dressed her up
    in the big-city fashions and jewelry
    that she wasted on wild Baal-orgies.
I’m about to bring her up short: No more wining and dining!
    Silk lingerie and gowns are a thing of the past.
I’ll expose her genitals to the public.
    All her fly-by-night lovers will be helpless to help her.
Party time is over. I’m calling a halt to the whole business,
    her wild weekends and unholy holidays.
I’ll wreck her sumptuous gardens and ornamental fountains,
    of which she bragged, ‘Whoring paid for all this!’
They will soon be dumping grounds for garbage,
    feeding grounds for stray dogs and cats.
I’ll make her pay for her indulgence in promiscuous religion—
    all that sensuous Baal worship
And all the promiscuous sex that went with it,
    stalking her lovers, dressed to kill,
And not a thought for me.”
    God’s Message!

To Start All Over Again

14-15 “And now, here’s what I’m going to do:
    I’m going to start all over again.
I’m taking her back out into the wilderness
    where we had our first date, and I’ll court her.
I’ll give her bouquets of roses.
    I’ll turn Heartbreak Valley into Acres of Hope.
She’ll respond like she did as a young girl,
    those days when she was fresh out of Egypt.

16-20 “At that time”—this is God’s Message still—
    “you’ll address me, ‘Dear husband!’
Never again will you address me,
    ‘My slave-master!’
I’ll wash your mouth out with soap,
    get rid of all the dirty false-god names,
    not so much as a whisper of those names again.
At the same time I’ll make a peace treaty between you
    and wild animals and birds and reptiles,
And get rid of all weapons of war.
    Think of it! Safe from beasts and bullies!
And then I’ll marry you for good—forever!
    I’ll marry you true and proper, in love and tenderness.
Yes, I’ll marry you and neither leave you nor let you go.
    You’ll know me, God, for who I really am.

21-23 “On the very same day, I’ll answer”—this is God’s Message—
    “I’ll answer the sky, sky will answer earth,
Earth will answer grain and wine and olive oil,
    and they’ll all answer Jezreel.
I’ll plant her in the good earth.
    I’ll have mercy on No-Mercy.
I’ll say to Nobody, ‘You’re my dear Somebody,’
    and he’ll say ‘You’re my God!’”

2 Kalla era bröder Ammi och era systrar Ruchama.[a]

2 Tala er mor till rätta,
    tala henne till rätta.
För hon är inte min hustru
    och jag är inte hennes man.
Låt henne göra sig av med sin otuktiga uppsyn
    och äktenskapsbrotten mellan sina bröst.
3 Annars ska jag klä av henne
    och låta henne gå lika naken
som hon var den dag hon föddes.
    Jag ska göra henne till en öken,
omvandla henne till ett förbränt land
    och låta henne dö av törst.
4 Jag ska inte förbarma mig över hennes barn,
    för de är barn till en sköka.
5 Deras mor var en sköka,
    hon som födde dem bedrev skamligheter.
Hon sa: ’Jag ska följa efter mina älskare
    som ger mig min mat och mitt vatten,
min ull och mitt lin, min olja och min dryck.’
6     Men jag ska stänga hennes väg
med törnen
    och resa en mur för henne,
så att hon inte hittar sina stigar.
7     Hon springer efter sina älskare
men får inte fatt på dem,
    hon letar efter dem,
utan att hitta dem.
    Då säger hon:
’Jag ska vända tillbaka till min förste man,
    för där hade jag det bättre än vad jag har det nu.’
8 Hon förstår inte
    att det var jag som gav henne
utsäde, vin, olja,
    mycket silver och guld,
som de använde till Baal.

9 Därför ska jag ta tillbaka min säd
    när dess tid är inne
och mitt vin när det är färdigt.
    Jag ska ta bort min ull och mitt lin
som hon skyler sin nakenhet med.
10     Nu ska jag blotta hennes blygd
inför hennes älskare,
    och ingen ska rädda henne undan min hand.
11 Jag ska sätta stopp för all hennes glädje,
    hennes högtider, nymånadsfester och sabbater,
alla hennes fester.
12     Jag ska förstöra hennes vinstockar
och fikonträd
    som hon säger sig ha fått som lön
av sina älskare.
    Jag ska göra dem till en snårskog,
och de vilda djuren ska äta dem.
13     Jag ska straffa henne för de dagar
då hon tände rökelse
    åt baalsgudarna,
smyckade sig själv med ringar och juveler
    och gick efter sina älskare
men glömde mig, säger Herren.

14 Jag ska locka henne bort
    och leda henne ut i öknen.
Där ska jag tala kärleksfullt till henne.
15     Där ska jag ge henne tillbaka hennes vingårdar
och förvandla Akors dal till en hoppets port.
    Då ska hon svara mig som i sin ungdom,
som när hon drog ut ur Egypten.

16 Den dagen, säger Herren,
    ska du kalla mig ’min man’
    i stället för ’min Baal’[b].
17 Jag ska ta bort baalsnamnen ur hennes mun,
    och man ska inte mer komma ihåg deras namn.
18 Jag ska också å deras vägnar
    sluta ett förbund med de vilda djuren,
himlens fåglar och markens kräldjur.
    Jag ska utplåna både båge, svärd och strid i landet,
    så att de får leva i trygghet.
19 Jag ska äkta dig med mig för evigt
    med rättfärdighet, rätt,
nåd och barmhärtighet.
20     Jag ska äkta dig i trohet,
och du ska lära känna Herren.

21 På den dagen, säger Herren,
    ska jag svara himlen,
och himlen ska svara jorden,
22     jorden ska svara säden,
vinet och oljan,
    och de ska svara Jisreel[c].
23 Jag ska plantera henne åt mig i landet
    och förbarma mig över Lo Ruchama.
Jag ska säga till Lo Ammi:
    ’Du är mitt folk,’
som ska svara:
    ’Min Gud!’ ”[d]

2 [a]“Say of your brothers, ‘My people,’ and of your sisters, ‘My loved one.’(A)

Israel Punished and Restored

2 “Rebuke your mother,(B) rebuke her,
    for she is not my wife,
    and I am not her husband.
Let her remove the adulterous(C) look from her face
    and the unfaithfulness from between her breasts.
3 Otherwise I will strip(D) her naked
    and make her as bare as on the day she was born;(E)
I will make her like a desert,(F)
    turn her into a parched land,
    and slay her with thirst.
4 I will not show my love to her children,(G)
    because they are the children of adultery.(H)
5 Their mother has been unfaithful
    and has conceived them in disgrace.
She said, ‘I will go after my lovers,(I)
    who give me my food and my water,
    my wool and my linen, my olive oil and my drink.’(J)
6 Therefore I will block her path with thornbushes;
    I will wall her in so that she cannot find her way.(K)
7 She will chase after her lovers but not catch them;
    she will look for them but not find them.(L)
Then she will say,
    ‘I will go back to my husband(M) as at first,(N)
    for then I was better off(O) than now.’
8 She has not acknowledged(P) that I was the one
    who gave her the grain, the new wine and oil,(Q)
who lavished on her the silver and gold(R)—
    which they used for Baal.(S)

9 “Therefore I will take away my grain(T) when it ripens,
    and my new wine(U) when it is ready.
I will take back my wool and my linen,
    intended to cover her naked body.
10 So now I will expose(V) her lewdness
    before the eyes of her lovers;(W)
    no one will take her out of my hands.(X)
11 I will stop(Y) all her celebrations:(Z)
    her yearly festivals, her New Moons,
    her Sabbath days—all her appointed festivals.(AA)
12 I will ruin her vines(AB) and her fig trees,(AC)
    which she said were her pay from her lovers;(AD)
I will make them a thicket,(AE)
    and wild animals will devour them.(AF)
13 I will punish her for the days
    she burned incense(AG) to the Baals;(AH)
she decked herself with rings and jewelry,(AI)
    and went after her lovers,(AJ)
    but me she forgot,(AK)”
declares the Lord.(AL)

14 “Therefore I am now going to allure her;
    I will lead her into the wilderness(AM)
    and speak tenderly to her.
15 There I will give her back her vineyards,
    and will make the Valley of Achor[b](AN) a door of hope.
There she will respond[c](AO) as in the days of her youth,(AP)
    as in the day she came up out of Egypt.(AQ)

16 “In that day,” declares the Lord,
    “you will call me ‘my husband’;(AR)
    you will no longer call me ‘my master.[d]’
17 I will remove the names of the Baals from her lips;(AS)
    no longer will their names be invoked.(AT)
18 In that day I will make a covenant for them
    with the beasts of the field, the birds in the sky
    and the creatures that move along the ground.(AU)
Bow and sword and battle
    I will abolish(AV) from the land,
    so that all may lie down in safety.(AW)
19 I will betroth(AX) you to me forever;
    I will betroth you in[e] righteousness and justice,(AY)
    in[f] love and compassion.(AZ)
20 I will betroth you in[g] faithfulness,
    and you will acknowledge(BA) the Lord.(BB)

21 “In that day I will respond,”
    declares the Lord—
“I will respond(BC) to the skies,
    and they will respond to the earth;
22 and the earth will respond to the grain,
    the new wine and the olive oil,(BD)
    and they will respond to Jezreel.[h](BE)
23 I will plant(BF) her for myself in the land;
    I will show my love to the one I called ‘Not my loved one.[i](BG)’
I will say to those called ‘Not my people,[j]’ ‘You are my people’;(BH)
    and they will say, ‘You are my God.(BI)’”
