Dios Habla Hoy
2 (3) Entonces dirán ustedes a sus hermanos:
«Pueblo de Dios»,
y a sus hermanas:
«Compadecidas».
La infidelidad del pueblo de Israel
2 (4) El Señor dice:
«¡Acusen ustedes a su madre, acúsenla,
porque ella no es ya mi esposa
ni yo soy su marido!
¡Que deje de mostrarse como prostituta!
¡Que aparte de sus pechos a sus amantes!
3 (5) Si no lo hace, la dejaré desnuda por completo:
la pondré como el día en que nació,
la convertiré en un desierto,
en pura tierra seca,
y la haré morir de sed.
4 (6) No me compadeceré de sus hijos,
pues son fruto de su prostitución.
5 (7) Su madre se prostituyó;
perdió el honor, cuando dijo:
“Iré en busca de mis amantes,
los que me dan mi pan y mi agua,
mi lana y mi lino,
mi aceite y mis bebidas.”
6 (8) »Por eso cerraré con espinos su camino
y pondré una cerca a su alrededor,
para que no encuentre sus senderos.
7 (9) Seguirá a sus amantes,
pero no los alcanzará;
los buscará, pero no los encontrará.
Dirá entonces:
“Volveré a mi primer marido,
pues con él me iba mejor que ahora.”
8 (10) »Pero ella no reconoció
que yo era quien le daba
el trigo, el vino y el aceite;
que yo era quien le aumentaba
la plata y el oro con que fabricó sus ídolos.
9 (11) Por lo tanto, volveré
y tomaré mi trigo y mi vino
en el tiempo de su cosecha,
y recogeré mi lana y mi lino,
que le había dado para cubrirse.
10 (12) A la vista de sus amantes
pondré su desnudez al descubierto.
¡Nadie la librará de mi mano!
11 (13) Pondré fin a su alegría,
a sus fiestas y lunas nuevas,
a sus sábados
y a todas sus festividades.
12 (14) Destruiré sus viñas y sus higueras,
de las que ella decía:
“Ésta es la paga
que me dieron mis amantes.”
Las convertiré en un matorral,
y se las comerán los animales salvajes.
13 (15) Voy a castigarla por el tiempo que pasó
ofreciendo incienso a los ídolos,
cuando se adornaba con anillos y collares
para seguir a sus amantes
olvidándose de mí.
Yo, el Señor, lo afirmo.
Dios ama a su pueblo Israel
14 (16) »Yo la voy a enamorar:
la llevaré al desierto
y le hablaré al corazón.
15 (17) Luego le devolveré sus viñas,
y convertiré el valle de Acor
en puerta de esperanza para ella.
Allí me responderá como en su juventud,
como en el día en que salió de Egipto.
16 (18) Entonces me llamará “Marido mío”,
en vez de llamarme “Baal mío”.
Yo, el Señor, lo afirmo.
17 (19) Y quitaré de sus labios
los nombres de los baales,
y jamás volverán a mencionarse.
18 (20) »En aquel tiempo haré en favor de Israel
una alianza con los animales salvajes,
y con las aves y las serpientes;
romperé y quitaré de este país
el arco, la espada y la guerra,
para que mi pueblo descanse tranquilo.
19 (21) Israel, yo te haré mi esposa para siempre,
mi esposa legítima, conforme a la ley,
porque te amo entrañablemente.
20 (22) Yo te haré mi esposa y te seré fiel,
y tú entonces me conocerás como el Señor.
21 (23) Yo, el Señor, lo afirmo:
En aquel tiempo yo responderé al cielo,
y el cielo responderá a la tierra;
22 (24) la tierra responderá al trigo,
al vino y al aceite,
y ellos responderán a Jezreel.
23 (25) Plantaré a mi pueblo en la tierra
exclusivamente para mí;
tendré compasión de Lo-ruhama,
y a Lo-amí le diré: “Tú eres mi pueblo”,
y él me dirá: “¡Tú eres mi Dios!”»

Infidelidad del pueblo
2 [a]Digan a sus hermanos: «Ammí[b]», y a sus hermanas: «Ruhamá[c]».
2 «Discutan con su madre(A), discutan,
Porque ella no es mi mujer(B), y Yo no soy su marido;
Que quite, pues, de su rostro sus prostituciones(C),
Y sus adulterios de entre sus pechos;
3 No sea que Yo la desnude completamente(D)
Y la deje como el día en que nació(E),
Y la ponga como un desierto(F),
La reduzca a tierra seca
Y la mate de sed(G).
4 -»Tampoco tendré compasión de sus hijos,
Porque son hijos de prostitución(H),
5 Pues su madre se prostituyó;
La que los concibió se deshonró,
Porque dijo: “Iré tras mis amantes(I),
Que me dan mi pan y mi agua(J),
Mi lana y mi lino, mi aceite y mi bebida(K)”.
6 -»Por tanto, voy a cercar su camino(L) con espinos(M),
Y levantaré un muro contra ella para que no encuentre sus senderos(N).
7 -»Ella seguirá a sus amantes, pero no los alcanzará(O);
Los buscará, pero no los hallará.
Entonces dirá: “Iré y volveré(P) a mi primer marido(Q),
Porque mejor me iba entonces que ahora(R)”.
8 ¶»Pues ella no sabía(S) que era Yo el que le daba el trigo, el vino nuevo y el aceite(T),
Y le prodigaba la plata y el oro,
Que ellos usaban para Baal.
9 -»Por tanto, volveré a tomar Mi trigo a su tiempo
Y Mi vino nuevo a su sazón(U).
También me llevaré Mi lana y Mi lino
Que le di para que cubriera su desnudez.
10 -»Y entonces descubriré su vergüenza(V)
Ante los ojos de sus amantes,
Y nadie la librará de Mi mano.
11 -»Haré cesar también todo su regocijo(W),
Sus fiestas, sus lunas nuevas, sus días de reposo,
Y todas sus solemnidades(X).
12 -»Devastaré sus vides y sus higueras(Y),
De las cuales decía ella: “Son la paga
Que mis amantes me han dado”.
Y las convertiré en matorral(Z),
Y las devorarán las bestias del campo(AA).
13 -»La castigaré por los días de los Baales(AB)
Cuando ella les ofrecía sacrificios(AC)
Y se adornaba con sus zarcillos y joyas(AD),
Y se iba tras sus amantes, y se olvidaba de Mí(AE)», declara el Señor.
Dios se desposará con Su pueblo
14 ¶«Por tanto, voy a seducirla,
Llevarla al desierto(AF),
Y hablarle al corazón.
15 -»Allí le daré sus viñas(AG),
Y el valle de Acor(AH) por puerta de esperanza.
Y allí cantará como en los días de su juventud(AI),
Como en el día en que subió de la tierra de Egipto(AJ).
16 -»Sucederá en aquel día», declara el Señor,
«Que me llamarás Ishí[d](AK)
Y no me llamarás más Baalí[e].
17 -»Porque quitaré de su boca los nombres de los Baales,
Y nunca más serán mencionados por sus nombres(AL).
18 -»En aquel día haré también un pacto por ellos
Con las bestias del campo(AM),
Con las aves del cielo
Y con los reptiles de la tierra.
Quitaré de la tierra el arco, la espada y la guerra(AN),
Y haré que ellos duerman seguros(AO).
19 -»Te desposaré conmigo para siempre(AP);
Sí, te desposaré conmigo en justicia y en derecho,
En misericordia y en compasión(AQ);
20 Te desposaré conmigo en fidelidad,
Y tú conocerás al Señor(AR).
21 ¶»Y sucederá que en aquel día Yo responderé», declara el Señor,
«Responderé a los cielos, y ellos responderán a la tierra(AS),
22 Y la tierra responderá al trigo, al vino nuevo y al aceite(AT),
Y ellos responderán a Jezreel[f].
23 -»La sembraré para Mí en la tierra(AU),
Y tendré compasión de la que no recibió compasión[g](AV),
Y diré al que no era Mi pueblo[h](AW):
“Tú eres Mi pueblo(AX)”,
Y él dirá: “Tú eres mi Dios”».
Hosea 2
The Voice
Jezreel means “God sows [seed].” He will bring the people back to their land, and they’ll never be uprooted again.
2 Eternal One (to the future reunited people): Give your brothers a new name: My People;
and give your sisters a new name too: Shown Mercy.
2 I’m going to publicly charge your mother, Israel, with being unfaithful to Me.
But you must bring the accusation against her—you bring it—
Because she’s not My wife anymore and I’m not her husband.
Israel was unfaithful to God by worshiping the fertility gods of her neighbors and forging diplomatic and military alliances with these foreign nations.
Look at her! She must cease from her whoring ways,
even her adulteries from her breasts; she must remove her lovers.
3 If she doesn’t stop, I’ll take away all her clothes and jewels
and leave her as naked as the day she was born.
I’ll make her like the bare rocks and soil of the desert
where nothing grows because there’s no rain:
I’ll kill her with thirst.
4 When I divorce her, I won’t take care of her children
because they are children of wickedness, tainted by that very prostitution.
Whenever God’s children abandon proper worship of Him in favor of any earthly thing—be it worship of another god, dependence on themselves, or trust in foreign leaders—they break their covenant with Him. Breaking that promise is like committing adultery, which is literally the destruction of a marriage covenant. Here, God is furious with Israel because they have chosen to serve the gods of other nations in addition to Him; they are committing adultery against Him.
Under the rule of King Jeroboam II in the Northern Kingdom of Israel, worship of a Canaanite deity named Baal is common. Many people believe he is the god of weather and therefore the one who makes the earth fertile and produces crops. Like God, he is worshiped through the donation of gifts and sacrificing of animals, but Baal is also honored by the activities of prostitutes at shrines dedicated to him. The men and women who are employed at those shrines are paid for their fertility rituals by customers (worshipers) not only with money but also with the produce of the land their sexual activities supposedly fertilized: bread and water, wool and flax, oil and wine.
5 Their mother was a prostitute;
she brought shame on herself when she had these children.
She chased her customers, saying, “I’m going to go looking for my lovers.
They’re the ones who give me my bread and water,
my wool and flax, my oil and wine.”
6 But I’ll block her way with a thorn hedge;
I’ll put a wall up around her, blocking her usual paths,
7 and she will wander after her lovers like a dumb sheep.
She’ll chase after them, but she won’t catch them.
She’ll look for them, but she won’t find them.
Then she’ll say, “I’m going to go back to my original husband
because I was better off then than I am now!”
8 She didn’t know I was the One who gave her the grain and wine and oil—
not those fertility gods she was worshiping.
I made her rich with silver and gold,
but she devoted it to another divine master![a]
9 So when harvest time comes, I’ll take back My grain,
and when the grapes ripen, I’ll take back My wine.
I’ll take away the wool and flax I gave her to make clothes
so she wouldn’t be naked.
10 The land will be stripped bare,
and this unfaithful wife of Mine will be walking around
Embarrassingly naked in the sight of her lovers,
and none of them will be able to rescue her from Me.
11 So I’m going to end all of her celebrations
now that she uses them to honor other masters—
Her pilgrimage festivals, her new moon celebrations, her Sabbath feasts,
and all her other gatherings.
12 She says she’s entitled to her vines and fig trees
because they’re her wages from prostitution; they’re gifts from her lovers.
But I’m going to destroy them all. I’ll turn them into a tangle of brush,
and wild animals will eat up the fruit.
13 I swear that I’ll punish her for honoring other masters[b] on My special days,
even her burning incense to those false gods.
She got dressed up in her rings and jewelry;
she went after her lovers, and she forgot about Me.
14 But once she has nothing, I’ll be able to get through to her.
I’ll entice her and lead her out into the wilderness where we can be alone,
and I’ll speak right to her heart and try to win her back.
15 And then I’ll give her back her vineyards;
I’ll turn the valley of Achor, that “Valley of Trouble,”[c]
into a gateway of hope.
This is where Achan was judged for keeping forbidden spoils of war when Israel first entered into the land after the exodus.
In the wilderness of exile she’ll learn to respond to Me
the way she did when she was young, when I brought her out of Egypt.
16 And I swear when that day comes, she’ll call Me “my husband” and never address Me again as “my master” as she did those other gods. 17 She’ll never invoke the name of any other master again.
Everyone will forget that gods by that name ever existed. 18 When that day comes, this is what I’ll do for My people: I’ll make a covenant for them with the wild animals and flying birds and crawling insects, and they’ll agree never to devour her crops again. I’ll smash all the bows and swords and weapons that could be used to invade their land, and they’ll live in security.
(to His reclaimed bride) 19 I’m going to marry you, and this time it’ll be forever in righteousness and justice. Our covenant will reflect a loyal love and great mercy; 20 our marriage will be honest and truthful, and you’ll understand who I really am—the Eternal One.
21 And I swear that when that day comes
I’ll answer the sky and prayers for rain,
and the sky will give the land the water it’s asking for.
22 And the land will give the grain and wine and oil the fertile soil they need to develop,
and the crops will shout back to Me, “God sows!”[d]
23 I won’t just restore the agricultural abundance;
I’ll sow into My beloved land and plant the people in the land and make them My own.
To the one who has not been shown mercy,[e]
I’ll rename her Mercy.
I’ll tell Not My People,[f] “You are now My People!”
and he’ll respond, “You’re my God!”[g]
