Mentiras de Efraín
12 Efraín me ha rodeado de mentiras
y el pueblo de Israel de engaños,
pero Judá aún camina con Dios
y se mantiene fiel al muy Santo.
2 Efraín se alimenta de aire
y corre todo el día tras el viento;
multiplica sus mentiras y violencias,
hace pactos con Asiria
y regala aceite a Egipto.
Una larga historia de rebeldía
3 El Señor entabla pleito a Israel,
va a castigar la conducta de Jacob,
le va a retribuir según sus acciones.
4 Ya en el seno materno
suplantó a su hermano
y en su edad viril luchó con Dios,
5 luchó con un ángel y lo venció.
Luego lloró y pidió compasión;
Dios lo encontró en Betel
y allí habló con nosotros.
6 El Señor es Dios del universo;
su nombre es el Señor.
7 En cuanto a ti, conviértete a tu Dios,
practica el amor y el derecho
y confía siempre en tu Dios.
8 Canaán maneja pesas falsas,
pues le agrada estafar.
9 Y Efraín dice: “Me he hecho rico,
he conseguido una fortuna;
en todas mis ganancias
nadie podrá acusarme de pecado”.
10 Pero yo que soy el Señor, tu Dios,
desde que estabas en Egipto,
haré que vivas de nuevo
en tiendas de campaña
como en los días del encuentro.
11 Hablaré a los profetas,
multiplicaré sus visiones
y me expresaré en parábolas
por medio de esos profetas.
12 En Galaad se da culto a ídolos
que no son más que dioses falsos;
en Guilgal se inmolan toros
en altares que sólo son majanos
en medio de los surcos del campo.
13 Huyó Jacob a la campiña de Aram;
allí Israel sirvió por una mujer
y por ella se hizo pastor de rebaños.
14 Más tarde el Señor
sacó a Israel de Egipto
por medio de un profeta,
y por medio de un profeta lo cuidó.
15 Pero Efraín ha irritado [al Señor]
cometiendo una amarga ofensa;
así que su Señor le devolverá los agravios
y le hará pagar por sus crímenes.

12 Ephraim feedeth on wind, and followeth after the east wind: he daily increaseth lies and desolation; and they do make a covenant with the Assyrians, and oil is carried into Egypt.
2 The Lord hath also a controversy with Judah, and will punish Jacob according to his ways; according to his doings will he recompense him.
3 He took his brother by the heel in the womb, and by his strength he had power with God:
4 Yea, he had power over the angel, and prevailed: he wept, and made supplication unto him: he found him in Bethel, and there he spake with us;
5 Even the Lord God of hosts; the Lord is his memorial.
6 Therefore turn thou to thy God: keep mercy and judgment and wait on thy God continually.
7 He is a merchant, the balances of deceit are in his hand: he loveth to oppress.
8 And Ephraim said, Yet I am become rich, I have found me out substance: in all my labours they shall find none iniquity in me that were sin.
9 And I that am the Lord thy God from the land of Egypt will yet make thee to dwell in tabernacles, as in the days of the solemn feast.
10 I have also spoken by the prophets, and I have multiplied visions, and used similitudes, by the ministry of the prophets.
11 Is there iniquity in Gilead? surely they are vanity: they sacrifice bullocks in Gilgal; yea, their altars are as heaps in the furrows of the fields.
12 And Jacob fled into the country of Syria, and Israel served for a wife, and for a wife he kept sheep.
13 And by a prophet the Lord brought Israel out of Egypt, and by a prophet was he preserved.
14 Ephraim provoked him to anger most bitterly: therefore shall he leave his blood upon him, and his reproach shall his Lord return unto him.

Ephraim’s Sins Rebuked by God
12 “Ephraim (A)feeds on the wind,
And pursues the east wind;
He daily increases lies and [a]desolation.
(B)Also they make a [b]covenant with the Assyrians,
And (C)oil is carried to Egypt.
2 “The(D) Lord also brings a [c]charge against Judah,
And will punish Jacob according to his ways;
According to his deeds He will recompense him.
3 He took his brother (E)by the heel in the womb,
And in his strength he (F)struggled with God.
4 Yes, he struggled with the Angel and prevailed;
He wept, and sought favor from Him.
He found Him in (G)Bethel,
And there He spoke to us—
5 That is, the Lord God of hosts.
The Lord is His (H)memorable name.
6 (I)So you, by the help of your God, return;
Observe mercy and justice,
And wait on your God continually.
7 “A cunning [d]Canaanite!
(J)Deceitful scales are in his hand;
He loves to oppress.
8 And Ephraim said,
(K)‘Surely I have become rich,
I have found wealth for myself;
In all my labors
They shall find in me no iniquity that is sin.’
9 “But I am the Lord your God,
Ever since the land of Egypt;
(L)I will again make you dwell in tents,
As in the days of the appointed feast.
10 (M)I have also spoken by the prophets,
And have multiplied visions;
I have given [e]symbols [f]through the witness of the prophets.”
11 Though (N)Gilead has idols—
Surely they are [g]vanity—
Though they sacrifice bulls in (O)Gilgal,
Indeed their altars shall be heaps in the furrows of the field.
12 Jacob (P)fled to the country of Syria;
(Q)Israel served for a spouse,
And for a wife he tended sheep.
13 (R)By a prophet the Lord brought Israel out of Egypt,
And by a prophet he was preserved.
14 Ephraim (S)provoked Him to anger most bitterly;
Therefore his Lord will leave the guilt of his bloodshed upon him,
(T)And return his reproach upon him.

12 Le peuple d’Ephraïm ╵me cerne de mensonges,
la communauté d’Israël ╵de tromperie.
Juda marche encore avec Dieu,
il est fidèle ╵parmi les saints[a].
2 Ephraïm se repaît de vent
et, à longueur de jour, ╵il court après le vent d’orient.
Il multiplie la fraude ╵et la violence.
Il fait alliance avec Assur
et porte de l’huile[b] en Egypte.
3 Contre Juda[c] ╵l’Eternel intente un procès.
Il va châtier Jacob ╵pour sa conduite,
il le rétribuera ╵selon ses actes.
4 Dans le sein de sa mère,
il supplanta[d] son frère
et dans son âge mûr, ╵il lutta avec Dieu[e].
5 Il lutta avec l’ange ╵et il sortit vainqueur,
il pleura et le supplia.
Il rencontra Dieu à Béthel,
et là, Dieu nous parla[f].
6 C’est l’Eternel, ╵Dieu des armées célestes,
oui, l’Eternel. ╵C’est ainsi qu’on parle de lui.
7 Maintenant, ô Jacob, ╵reviens donc à ton Dieu.
Pratique l’amour et le droit
et compte en tout temps sur ton Dieu.
8 Tout comme des Cananéens[g], ╵ces gens tiennent en main ╵des balances truquées
et ils se plaisent à frauder.
9 Ephraïm dit :
« Ah, je me suis bien enrichi !
j’ai acquis de grands biens.
Dans toutes mes affaires[h],
on ne pourra trouver de faute ╵qui serait un péché. »
10 « Moi, je suis l’Eternel ton Dieu,
depuis l’Egypte,
et je te ferai de nouveau ╵habiter sous des tentes
tout comme aux jours où l’on célèbre ╵la fête des Cabanes[i].
11 J’ai parlé aux prophètes
et je leur ai donné ╵des révélations en grand nombre,
je parlerai encore ╵en paraboles
par des prophètes. »
12 Puisque Galaad[j] est inique ╵il ne vaut plus grand-chose[k],
car ils offrent en sacrifice ╵des taureaux à Guilgal[l] ;
aussi leurs autels seront-ils ╵réduits en des tas de décombres
dans les sillons des champs.
13 Or, Jacob s’est enfui ╵dans la plaine d’Aram,
Israël a servi ╵pour une femme ;
pour une femme, ╵il s’est fait gardien de troupeaux[m].
14 Or l’Eternel a fait sortir ╵Israël de l’Egypte
par un prophète[n].
Par un prophète, ╵Israël a été gardé.
15 Ephraïm a irrité Dieu ╵amèrement,
c’est pourquoi son Seigneur ╵ne lui pardonne pas ╵le sang qu’il a versé,
et il lui revaudra
le mépris dont il a fait preuve.
