Destrucción de los altares de Israel
10 Israel es como una vid llena de uvas;
pero cuanto más abundante era su fruto,
más altares se construía;
cuanto más hermosa era su tierra,
más hermosas eran sus piedras sagradas.
2 Israel tiene el corazón dividido,
y ahora va a pagar por su pecado.
El Señor destruirá sus altares
y derribará sus piedras sagradas.
3 Ahora este pueblo dirá:
«No tenemos rey
porque no tenemos reverencia al Señor.
Pero ¿qué podría hacer un rey por nosotros?
4 Tan sólo hablar y hablar,
prometer en falso y firmar pactos;
su justicia sería como una planta venenosa
que crece entre los surcos del campo.»
5 La gente de Samaria tiembla;
llora la pérdida del becerro de Bet-avén.
Por él se están lamentando
el pueblo y los sacerdotes,
porque su gloria ha desaparecido.
6 Aun el propio becerro será llevado a Asiria
para ofrecérselo al gran rey.
Así Efraín quedará avergonzado:
Israel se avergonzará de su ídolo.
7 Desaparecerá el rey de Samaria
como una astilla que flota sobre el agua.
8 Serán destruidos los santuarios paganos
donde el pueblo de Israel pecaba.
Sobre sus altares crecerán cardos y espinos,
y la gente les dirá a los montes: «¡Cúbrannos!»,
y a los cerros: «¡Caigan sobre nosotros!»
Sentencia del Señor contra Israel
9 Dice el Señor:
«Israel no ha dejado de pecar
desde que comenzó a hacerlo en Guibeá.
¡En su pecado persisten!
Por eso, la guerra
alcanzará a estos malvados en Guibeá.
10 Castigaré a este pueblo cuando yo quiera.
Contra él se juntarán naciones
cuando yo lo castigue por su gran maldad.
11 »Efraín era como una novilla domada
que gustaba de trillar el grano.
Yo he puesto yugo ahora
sobre su hermoso cuello,
para que tire del carro;
y Judá tirará del arado,
y Jacob tirará del rastrillo.
12 Les dije: Siembren ustedes justicia
y recojan cosecha de amor.
Preparen la tierra para un nuevo cultivo,
porque es tiempo de buscar al Señor,
hasta que él venga y traiga
lluvia de salvación sobre ustedes.
13 Pero ustedes han cultivado la maldad,
han cosechado la injusticia
y han comido los frutos de la mentira.
»Por haber confiado en tus carros de guerra
y en tus muchos guerreros,
14 habrá alboroto entre tu gente
y todas tus fortalezas serán asoladas,
como asoló a Bet-arbel el rey Salmán
el día de la batalla,
cuando aplastaron a la madre con los hijos.
15 Esto mismo les pasará a ustedes,
habitantes de Betel,
por causa de su gran maldad.
¡El rey de Israel
morirá al nacer el día!

English Standard Version Anglicised
10 (A)Israel is a luxuriant vine
that yields its fruit.
The more his fruit increased,
(B)the more altars he built;
as his country improved,
he improved his pillars.
2 Their heart is false;
now they must bear their guilt.
The Lord[a] will break down their altars
and destroy their pillars.
3 For now they will say:
(C)“We have no king,
for we do not fear the Lord;
and a king—what could he do for us?”
4 They utter (D)mere words;
with empty oaths they make covenants;
so (E)judgement springs up like poisonous weeds
(F)in the furrows of the field.
5 The inhabitants of Samaria tremble
for (G)the calf[b] of (H)Beth-aven.
Its people mourn for it, and so do its idolatrous priests—
those who rejoiced over it and (I)over its glory—
for it has departed[c] from them.
6 (J)The thing itself shall be carried to Assyria
as tribute to (K)the great king.[d]
Ephraim shall be put to shame,
and Israel shall be ashamed (L)of his idol.[e]
7 (M)Samaria's king shall perish
like a twig on the face of the waters.
8 The high places of (N)Aven, (O)the sin of Israel,
shall be destroyed.
(P)Thorn and thistle shall grow up
on their altars,
and (Q)they shall say to the mountains, “Cover us,”
and to the hills, “Fall on us.”
9 From (R)the days of Gibeah, you have sinned, O Israel;
there they have continued.
Shall not the war against the unjust[f] overtake them in Gibeah?
10 (S)When I please, (T)I will discipline them,
and nations shall be gathered against them
when they are bound up for (U)their double iniquity.
11 Ephraim was a trained calf
that (V)loved to thresh,
and I spared her fair neck;
but I will put (W)Ephraim to the yoke;
(X)Judah must plough;
Jacob must harrow for himself.
12 (Y)Sow for yourselves righteousness;
reap steadfast love;
(Z)break up your fallow ground,
for it is the time to seek the Lord,
that he may come and (AA)rain righteousness upon you.
13 (AB)You have ploughed iniquity;
you have reaped injustice;
you have eaten the fruit of lies.
Because you have trusted in your own way
and in the multitude of your warriors,
14 therefore (AC)the tumult of war shall arise among your people,
and all your fortresses shall be destroyed,
as (AD)Shalman destroyed Beth-arbel on the day of battle;
(AE)mothers were dashed in pieces with their children.
15 Thus it shall be done to you, O (AF)Bethel,
because of your great evil.
At dawn (AG)the king of Israel
shall be utterly cut off.
