Jugement d’Israël
10 Israël était une vigne féconde,
Qui rendait beaucoup de fruits.
Plus ses fruits étaient abondants,
Plus il a multiplié les autels;
Plus son pays était prospère,
Plus il a embelli les statues.
2 Leur cœur est partagé: ils vont en porter la peine.
L’Eternel renversera leurs autels, détruira leurs statues.
3 Et bientôt ils diront:
Nous n’avons point de roi,
Car nous n’avons pas craint l’Eternel;
Et le roi, que pourrait-il faire pour nous?
4 Ils prononcent des paroles vaines, des serments faux,
Lorsqu’ils concluent une alliance:
Aussi le châtiment germera, comme une plante vénéneuse
Dans les sillons des champs.
5 Les habitants de Samarie seront consternés au sujet des veaux de Beth-Aven[a];
Le peuple mènera deuil sur l’idole,
Et ses prêtres trembleront pour elle,
Pour sa gloire, qui va disparaître du milieu d’eux.
6 Elle sera transportée en Assyrie,
Pour servir de présent au roi Jareb.
La confusion saisira Ephraïm,
Et Israël aura honte de ses desseins.
7 C’en est fait de Samarie, de son roi,
Comme de l’écume à la surface des eaux.
8 Les hauts lieux de Beth-Aven, où Israël a péché, seront détruits;
L’épine et la ronce croîtront sur leurs autels.
Ils diront aux montagnes: Couvrez-nous[b]!
Et aux collines: Tombez sur nous!
9 Depuis les jours de Guibea tu as péché, Israël!
Là ils restèrent debout,
La guerre contre les méchants ne les atteignit pas à Guibea.
10 Je les châtierai à mon gré,
Et des peuples s’assembleront contre eux,
Quand on les enchaînera pour leur double iniquité.
11 Ephraïm est une génisse dressée, et qui aime à fouler le grain,
Mais je m’approcherai de son beau cou;
J’attellerai Ephraïm, Juda labourera, Jacob hersera.
12 Semez selon la justice, moissonnez selon la miséricorde,
Défrichez-vous un champ nouveau!
Il est temps de chercher l’Eternel,
Jusqu’à ce qu’il vienne, et répande pour vous la justice.
13 Vous avez cultivé le mal, moissonné l’iniquité,
Mangé le fruit du mensonge;
Car tu as eu confiance dans ta voie,
Dans le nombre de tes vaillants hommes.
14 Il s’élèvera un tumulte parmi ton peuple,
Et toutes tes forteresses seront détruites,
Comme Schalman[c] détruisit Beth-Arbel,
Au jour de la guerre,
Où la mère fut écrasée avec les enfants.
15 Voilà ce que vous attirera Béthel,
A cause de votre extrême méchanceté,
Vienne l’aurore, et c’en est fait du roi d’Israël.

10 Israel was a spreading vine;(A)
he brought forth fruit for himself.
As his fruit increased,
he built more altars;(B)
as his land prospered,(C)
he adorned his sacred stones.(D)
2 Their heart is deceitful,(E)
and now they must bear their guilt.(F)
The Lord will demolish their altars(G)
and destroy their sacred stones.(H)
3 Then they will say, “We have no king
because we did not revere the Lord.
But even if we had a king,
what could he do for us?”
4 They make many promises,
take false oaths(I)
and make agreements;(J)
therefore lawsuits spring up
like poisonous weeds(K) in a plowed field.
5 The people who live in Samaria fear
for the calf-idol(L) of Beth Aven.[a](M)
Its people will mourn over it,
and so will its idolatrous priests,(N)
those who had rejoiced over its splendor,
because it is taken from them into exile.(O)
6 It will be carried to Assyria(P)
as tribute(Q) for the great king.(R)
Ephraim will be disgraced;(S)
Israel will be ashamed(T) of its foreign alliances.
7 Samaria’s king will be destroyed,(U)
swept away like a twig on the surface of the waters.
8 The high places(V) of wickedness[b](W) will be destroyed—
it is the sin of Israel.
Thorns(X) and thistles will grow up
and cover their altars.(Y)
Then they will say to the mountains, “Cover us!”(Z)
and to the hills, “Fall on us!”(AA)
9 “Since the days of Gibeah,(AB) you have sinned,(AC) Israel,
and there you have remained.[c]
Will not war again overtake
the evildoers in Gibeah?
10 When I please, I will punish(AD) them;
nations will be gathered against them
to put them in bonds for their double sin.
11 Ephraim is a trained heifer
that loves to thresh;
so I will put a yoke(AE)
on her fair neck.
I will drive Ephraim,
Judah must plow,
and Jacob must break up the ground.
12 Sow(AF) righteousness(AG) for yourselves,
reap the fruit of unfailing love,
and break up your unplowed ground;(AH)
for it is time to seek(AI) the Lord,
until he comes
and showers his righteousness(AJ) on you.
13 But you have planted wickedness,
you have reaped evil,(AK)
you have eaten the fruit of deception.(AL)
Because you have depended on your own strength
and on your many warriors,(AM)
14 the roar of battle will rise against your people,
so that all your fortresses will be devastated(AN)—
as Shalman(AO) devastated Beth Arbel on the day of battle,
when mothers were dashed to the ground with their children.(AP)
15 So will it happen to you, Bethel,
because your wickedness is great.
When that day dawns,
the king of Israel will be completely destroyed.(AQ)

10 Israel (A)empties his vine;
He brings forth fruit for himself.
According to the multitude of his fruit
(B)He has increased the altars;
According to the bounty of his land
They have embellished his sacred pillars.
2 Their heart is (C)divided;[a]
Now they are held guilty.
He will break down their altars;
He will ruin their sacred pillars.
3 For now they say,
“We have no king,
Because we did not fear the Lord.
And as for a king, what would he do for us?”
4 They have spoken words,
Swearing falsely in making a covenant.
Thus judgment springs up (D)like hemlock in the furrows of the field.
5 The inhabitants of Samaria fear
Because of the (E)calf[b] of Beth Aven.
For its people mourn for it,
And [c]its priests shriek for it—
Because its (F)glory has departed from it.
6 The idol also shall be carried to Assyria
As a present for King (G)Jareb.
Ephraim shall receive shame,
And Israel shall be ashamed of his own counsel.
7 As for Samaria, her king is cut off
Like a twig on the water.
8 Also the (H)high places of [d]Aven, (I)the sin of Israel,
Shall be destroyed.
The thorn and thistle shall grow on their altars;
(J)They shall say to the mountains, “Cover us!”
And to the hills, “Fall on us!”
9 “O Israel, you have sinned from the days of (K)Gibeah;
There they stood.
The (L)battle in Gibeah against the children of [e]iniquity
Did not [f]overtake them.
10 When it is My desire, I will chasten them.
(M)Peoples shall be gathered against them
When I bind them [g]for their two transgressions.
11 Ephraim is (N)a trained heifer
That loves to thresh grain;
But I harnessed her fair neck,
I will make Ephraim [h]pull a plow.
Judah shall plow;
Jacob shall break his clods.”
12 Sow for yourselves righteousness;
Reap in mercy;
(O)Break up your fallow ground,
For it is time to seek the Lord,
Till He (P)comes and rains righteousness on you.
13 (Q)You have plowed wickedness;
You have reaped iniquity.
You have eaten the fruit of lies,
Because you trusted in your own way,
In the multitude of your mighty men.
14 Therefore tumult shall arise among your people,
And all your fortresses shall be plundered
As Shalman plundered Beth Arbel in the day of battle—
A mother dashed in pieces upon her children.
15 Thus it shall be done to you, O Bethel,
Because of your great wickedness.
At dawn the king of Israel
Shall be cut off utterly.

10 (A)Israel is a luxuriant vine
that yields its fruit.
The more his fruit increased,
(B)the more altars he built;
as his country improved,
he improved his pillars.
2 Their heart is false;
now they must bear their guilt.
The Lord[a] will break down their altars
and destroy their pillars.
3 For now they will say:
(C)“We have no king,
for we do not fear the Lord;
and a king—what could he do for us?”
4 They utter (D)mere words;
with empty[b] oaths they make covenants;
so (E)judgment springs up like poisonous weeds

and I spared her fair neck;
but I will put (W)Ephraim to the yoke;
(X)Judah must plow;
Jacob must harrow for himself.
12 (Y)Sow for yourselves righteousness;
reap steadfast love;
(Z)break up your fallow ground,
for it is the time to seek the Lord,
that he may come and (AA)rain righteousness upon you.
13 (AB)You have plowed iniquity;
you have reaped injustice;
you have eaten the fruit of lies.
Because you have trusted in your own way
and in the multitude of your warriors,
14 therefore (AC)the tumult of war shall arise among your people,
and all your fortresses shall be destroyed,
as (AD)Shalman destroyed Beth-arbel on the day of battle;
(AE)mothers were dashed in pieces with their children.
15 Thus it shall be done to you, O (AF)Bethel,
because of your great evil.
At dawn (AG)the king of Israel
shall be utterly cut off.
