Varning för olika slags dårskap
6 Min son, om du har gått i borgen för din nästa
och givit ditt handslag åt en främling,
2 om du har blivit snärjd genom dina ord
och fångad genom din muns tal,
3 gör då detta, min son, för att rädda dig,
eftersom du har kommit i din nästas våld:
Gå och ödmjuka dig och lämna honom ingen ro,
4 unna inte dina ögon sömn
eller dina ögonlock slummer.
5 Sök räddning som en gasell undan jägaren,
som en fågel ur fågelfängarens våld.
6 Gå bort till myran, du late,
se hur hon gör och bli vis.
7 Hon har ingen furste över sig,
ingen tillsyningsman eller herre.
8 Hon bereder om sommaren sin föda
och samlar under skördetiden in sin mat.
9 Hur länge skall du ligga, du late?
När skall du stiga upp från din sömn?
10 Sov ännu något, slumra lite till,
lägg ännu en stund armarna i kors för att vila,
11 så skall fattigdomen komma över dig som en rövare
och armodet som en väpnad man.
12 En fördärvlig människa, en ogärningsman,
är den som går omkring med falskhet i sin mun,
13 som blinkar med ögonen, skrapar med foten,
gör tecken med fingrarna.
14 En sådan bär svek i sitt hjärta,
han smider alltid ränker
och ger upphov till trätor.
15 Därför kommer hans ofärd med hast,
plötsligt blir han krossad utan räddning.
16 Sex ting är det som Herren hatar,
ja, sju som han avskyr:
17 stolta ögon, en lögnaktig tunga,
händer som utgjuter oskyldigt blod,
18 ett hjärta som smider onda planer,
fötter som skyndar till det som är ont,
19 den som främjar lögn genom att vittna falskt
och den som vållar trätor mellan bröder.
Varning för äktenskapsbrott
20 Min son, bevara din fars bud
och förkasta inte din mors undervisning.
21 Ha dem alltid bundna vid ditt hjärta,
fäst dem omkring din hals.
22 Låt dem leda dig när du går,
vaka över dig när du ligger
och tala till dig när du vaknar.
23 Ty budet är en lykta och undervisningen ett ljus,
förmanande tillrättavisning är en livets väg.
24 De skall bevara dig för onda kvinnor,
för den främmande kvinnans smicker.
25 Ha inte begärelse i ditt hjärta till hennes skönhet
och låt dig inte fångas av hennes blickar.
26 Ty för skökan måste du lämna din sista brödbit,
och den gifta kvinnan vill fånga din dyrbara själ.
27 Kan någon hämta eld i sitt mantelveck
utan att kläderna brinner upp?
28 Eller kan någon gå på glödande kol
utan att fötterna blir svedda?
29 Så går det den som går in till sin nästas hustru,
ostraffad blir ingen som kommer henne nära.
30 Föraktar man inte tjuven som stjäl
för att äta sig mätt när han är hungrig?
31 Om han ertappas måste han betala sjufalt igen
och ge ifrån sig allt han äger i sitt hus.
32 Likaså är den utan förstånd,
som förför en annans hustru.
Den som gör så fördärvar sitt eget liv.
33 Plåga och skam är vad han vinner,
hans vanära utplånas aldrig.
34 Ty svartsjuk är mannens vrede,
han skonar ej på hämndens dag.
35 Betalning tar han inte emot,
han bryr sig inte om dina stora gåvor.

Goda råd
6 Min son, om du går i borgen för någon du knappast känner och på så sätt tar på dig ansvaret för dennes skuld, har du verkligen skaffat dig problem.
2 Är du bunden till det löfte du gett?
3 Då ger jag dig bara ett enda råd: Försök att så fort som möjligt bli fri från det! Ge dig inte förrän du är fri från denne man.
4 Vänta inte! Gör det omedelbart, och unna dig inte någon vila förrän du gjort det!
5 Försök med alla medel att komma ur denna fälla precis som en hjort som flyr från jägaren eller en fågel som klarar sig ur snaran.
6 Lär dig av myrorna, du som är lat. Lär dig av deras arbete och bli vis!
7 De har ingen ledare över sig, som ser till att de arbetar,
8 men trots det arbetar de intensivt hela sommaren och samlar mat för vintern.
9 Men du vill bara sova! När ska du egentligen vakna?
10 Låt mig sova lite till! Bara lite till!, säger du.
11 Men medan du sover smyger sig fattigdomen på dig. Nöden drabbar dig medan du sitter med armarna i kors.
12-13 Jag ska beskriva en fördärvad och ogudaktig människas beteende för dig. För det första ljuger hon alltid. Hon blinkar med ögonen och gör sina gester för att på så sätt bedra dig.
14 För det andra är hennes inre fyllt av svek. Hon har alltid något ont i sinnet, och hon sprider missnöje omkring sig.
15 Därför ska olycka plötsligt träffa henne. Totalt oväntat kommer slutet och hon har inte en chans att komma undan.
16-19 Det finns nämligen sex saker som Herren hatar - nej, de är sju:överlägsenhetlögnmordonda planerbegär att göra orättfalska vittnesbördatt underblåsa stridigheter bröder emellan.
Lyd föräldrars råd
20 Unge man, lyd dina föräldrar.
21 Kom alltid ihåg deras förmaningar och bevara dem i ditt hjärta.
22 Dag och natt ska deras råd leda dig och styra ditt tänkande och ditt handlande.
23 Den uppfostran, som dina föräldrar gett dig, är ett skinande ljus som visar dig den rätta vägen. Deras förmaningar visar dig hur du ska leva.
24 De varnar dig för dåliga kvinnor som med uppeggande ord försöker att locka dig till sig.
25 Låt dig inte fångas av deras skönhet eller deras förföriska blickar.
26 En prostituerad kan göra en man utfattig, och en kvinna som är otrogen i sitt äktenskap kan kosta honom livet.
27 Kan en man hålla en brinnande fackla mot bröstet utan att det tar eld i kläderna?
28 Kan han gå över glödande kol utan att få blåsor under fötterna?
29 Lika illa är det med en man som är otrogen med en annan mans fru. Han kommer inte att bli ostraffad.
30 Man kan finna ursäkter för en tjuv, om han stjäl när han är hungrig!
31 Om han åker fast får han trots detta betala böter, som är sju gånger större än värdet av vad han stal. Han kanske till och med måste sälja sitt hus för att kunna betala igen det.
32 Den man som är otrogen i äktenskapet är en fullkomlig dåre. Han fördärvar sig själv.
33 Skam och ständig vanära kommer att bli hans lott,
34 och kvinnans make kommer att bli ursinnig av svartsjuka och inte visa honom någon barmhärtighet när han hämnas.
35 Inte ens om du erbjuder honom en stor summa pengar kan du köpa dig fri och stilla hans vrede.

6 My son,(A) if you have put up security(B) for your neighbor,(C)
if you have shaken hands in pledge(D) for a stranger,
2 you have been trapped by what you said,
ensnared by the words of your mouth.
3 So do this, my son, to free yourself,
since you have fallen into your neighbor’s hands:
Go—to the point of exhaustion—[a]
and give your neighbor no rest!
4 Allow no sleep to your eyes,
no slumber to your eyelids.(E)
5 Free yourself, like a gazelle(F) from the hand of the hunter,(G)
like a bird from the snare of the fowler.(H)
6 Go to the ant, you sluggard;(I)
consider its ways and be wise!
7 It has no commander,
no overseer or ruler,
8 yet it stores its provisions in summer(J)
and gathers its food at harvest.(K)
9 How long will you lie there, you sluggard?(L)
When will you get up from your sleep?
10 A little sleep, a little slumber,
a little folding of the hands to rest(M)—
11 and poverty(N) will come on you like a thief
and scarcity like an armed man.
12 A troublemaker and a villain,
who goes about with a corrupt mouth,
13 who winks maliciously with his eye,(O)
signals with his feet
and motions with his fingers,(P)
14 who plots evil(Q) with deceit in his heart—
he always stirs up conflict.(R)
15 Therefore disaster will overtake him in an instant;(S)

16 There are six things the Lord hates,(V)
seven that are detestable to him:
17 haughty eyes,(W)
a lying tongue,(X)
hands that shed innocent blood,(Y)
18 a heart that devises wicked schemes,
feet that are quick to rush into evil,(Z)
19 a false witness(AA) who pours out lies(AB)
and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.(AC)
Warning Against Adultery
20 My son,(AD) keep your father’s command
and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.(AE)
21 Bind them always on your heart;
fasten them around your neck.(AF)
22 When you walk, they will guide you;
when you sleep, they will watch over you;
when you awake, they will speak to you.
23 For this command is a lamp,
this teaching is a light,(AG)
and correction and instruction
are the way to life,(AH)
24 keeping you from your neighbor’s wife,
from the smooth talk of a wayward woman.(AI)
25 Do not lust in your heart after her beauty
or let her captivate you with her eyes.
26 For a prostitute can be had for a loaf of bread,
but another man’s wife preys on your very life.(AJ)
27 Can a man scoop fire into his lap
without his clothes being burned?
28 Can a man walk on hot coals
without his feet being scorched?
29 So is he who sleeps(AK) with another man’s wife;(AL)
no one who touches her will go unpunished.
30 People do not despise a thief if he steals
to satisfy his hunger when he is starving.
31 Yet if he is caught, he must pay sevenfold,(AM)
though it costs him all the wealth of his house.
32 But a man who commits adultery(AN) has no sense;(AO)
whoever does so destroys himself.
33 Blows and disgrace are his lot,
and his shame will never(AP) be wiped away.

The Folly of Indolence

The Wicked Man
12 A worthless person, a wicked man,
Walks with a perverse mouth;

He points with his fingers;
14 Perversity is in his heart,
(G)He devises evil continually,
(H)He sows discord.
15 Therefore his calamity shall come (I)suddenly;
Suddenly he shall (J)be broken (K)without remedy.
16 These six things the Lord hates,
Yes, seven are an abomination to [h]Him:

(M)A lying tongue,
(N)Hands that shed innocent blood,

Beware of Adultery
20 (S)My son, keep your father’s command,
And do not forsake the law of your mother.
21 (T)Bind them continually upon your heart;
Tie them around your neck.
22 (U)When you roam, [j]they will lead you;
When you sleep, (V)they will keep you;
And when you awake, they will speak with you.
23 (W)For the commandment is a lamp,
And the law a light;
Reproofs of instruction are the way of life,
24 (X)To keep you from the evil woman,
From the flattering tongue of a seductress.
25 (Y)Do not lust after her beauty in your heart,
Nor let her allure you with her eyelids.
26 For (Z)by means of a harlot
A man is reduced to a crust of bread;
(AA)And [k]an adulteress will (AB)prey upon his precious life.
27 Can a man take fire to his bosom,
And his clothes not be burned?
28 Can one walk on hot coals,
And his feet not be seared?
29 So is he who goes in to his neighbor’s wife;
Whoever touches her shall not be innocent.

If he steals to satisfy himself when he is starving.
31 Yet when he is found, (AC)he must restore sevenfold;
He may have to give up all the substance of his house.
32 Whoever commits adultery with a woman (AD)lacks understanding;
He who does so destroys his own soul.
33 Wounds and dishonor he will get,
And his reproach will not be wiped away.
34 For (AE)jealousy is a husband’s fury;
Therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance.
35 He will [l]accept no recompense,
Nor will he be appeased though you give many gifts.

2 Thou art snared with the words of thy mouth, thou art taken with the words of thy mouth.
3 Do this now, my son, and deliver thyself, when thou art come into the hand of thy friend; go, humble thyself, and make sure thy friend.
4 Give not sleep to thine eyes, nor slumber to thine eyelids.
5 Deliver thyself as a roe from the hand of the hunter, and as a bird from the hand of the fowler.
6 Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise:
7 Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler,
