Sayings of King Lemuel
31 The sayings(A) of King Lemuel—an inspired utterance his mother taught him.
2 Listen, my son! Listen, son of my womb!
Listen, my son, the answer to my prayers!(B)
3 Do not spend your strength[a] on women,
your vigor on those who ruin kings.(C)
4 It is not for kings, Lemuel—
it is not for kings to drink wine,(D)
not for rulers to crave beer,
5 lest they drink(E) and forget what has been decreed,(F)
and deprive all the oppressed of their rights.
6 Let beer be for those who are perishing,
wine(G) for those who are in anguish!
7 Let them drink(H) and forget their poverty
and remember their misery no more.
8 Speak(I) up for those who cannot speak for themselves,
for the rights of all who are destitute.
9 Speak up and judge fairly;
defend the rights of the poor and needy.(J)
Epilogue: The Wife of Noble Character
10 [b]A wife of noble character(K) who can find?(L)
She is worth far more than rubies.
11 Her husband(M) has full confidence in her
and lacks nothing of value.(N)
12 She brings him good, not harm,
all the days of her life.
13 She selects wool and flax
and works with eager hands.(O)
14 She is like the merchant ships,
bringing her food from afar.
15 She gets up while it is still night;
she provides food for her family
and portions for her female servants.
16 She considers a field and buys it;
out of her earnings she plants a vineyard.
17 She sets about her work vigorously;
her arms are strong for her tasks.
18 She sees that her trading is profitable,
and her lamp does not go out at night.
19 In her hand she holds the distaff
and grasps the spindle with her fingers.
20 She opens her arms to the poor
and extends her hands to the needy.(P)
21 When it snows, she has no fear for her household;
for all of them are clothed in scarlet.
22 She makes coverings for her bed;
she is clothed in fine linen and purple.
23 Her husband is respected at the city gate,
where he takes his seat among the elders(Q) of the land.
24 She makes linen garments and sells them,
and supplies the merchants with sashes.
25 She is clothed with strength and dignity;
she can laugh at the days to come.
26 She speaks with wisdom,
and faithful instruction is on her tongue.(R)
27 She watches over the affairs of her household
and does not eat the bread of idleness.
28 Her children arise and call her blessed;
her husband also, and he praises her:
29 “Many women do noble things,
but you surpass them all.”
30 Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting;
but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.
31 Honor her for all that her hands have done,
and let her works bring her praise(S) at the city gate.

2 «О сын мой, сын моего чрева;
о сын мой, ответ на молитвы мои[a]!
3 Не давай своей силы женщинам,
мощи своей – губительницам царей.
4 Не царям, Лемуил,
не царям пить вино,
не правителям жаждать пива,
5 чтобы, напившись, они не забыли законов
и не отняли прав у всех угнетённых.
6 Дайте пиво погибающим,
вино – тем, кто скорбит жестоко.
7 Пусть выпьют и бедность свою забудут,
и не вспомнят больше своих невзгод.
8 Говори за тех, кто не может сказать сам за себя,
для защиты прав всех обездоленных.
9 Говори, отстаивая справедливость;
защищай права бедных и нищих».

10 Хорошая жена – кто её найдёт?
Камней драгоценных она дороже.
11 Всем сердцем верит ей муж;
с ней он не будет в убытке.
12 Она приносит ему добро, а не зло,
во все дни своей жизни.
13 Она добывает шерсть и лён
и охотно трудится своими руками.
14 Она подобна купеческим кораблям –
издалека добывает свой хлеб.
15 Затемно она встаёт,
готовит пищу своей семье
и даёт служанкам работу.
16 Присматривает поле и покупает его;
на заработанное ею насаждает виноградник.
17 С жаром принимается за работу;
её руки крепки для труда.
18 Она знает, что её торговля доходна;
не гаснет ночью её светильник.
19 Руки свои на прялку кладёт,
пальцы её держат веретено.
20 Для бедняка она открывает ладонь
и протягивает нищим руку помощи.
21 В снег не боится за свою семью:
вся её семья одевается в двойные одежды.
22 Она делает покрывала для своей постели,
одевается в тонкий лён и пурпур[c].
23 Мужа её уважают у городских ворот[d] –
со старейшинами страны место его.
24 Она делает льняные одежды и продаёт их,
поставляет купцам пояса.
25 Одевается силою и достоинством
и весело смотрит она в завтрашний день.
26 Она говорит с мудростью,
и доброе наставление на её языке.
27 Она смотрит за делами своей семьи;
хлеб безделья она не ест.
28 Её дети встают и благословенной её зовут,
также муж – и хвалит её:
29 «Много есть хороших жён,
но ты превзошла их всех».
30 Прелесть обманчива, и красота мимолётна,
но женщина, что боится Вечного, достойна хвалы.
31 Дайте ей награду, которую она заслужила;
пусть дела её славятся у городских ворот.

The Words of King Lemuel
31 The words of King Lemuel. An oracle that his mother taught him:
2 What are you doing, my son?[a] What are you doing, (A)son of my womb?
What are you doing, (B)son of my vows?
3 Do (C)not give your strength to women,
your ways to those (D)who destroy kings.
4 (E)It is not for kings, O Lemuel,
it is not for kings (F)to drink wine,
or for rulers to take (G)strong drink,
5 lest they drink and forget what has been decreed
and (H)pervert the rights of all the afflicted.
6 Give strong drink to the one who (I)is perishing,
and wine to (J)those in bitter distress;[b]
7 (K)let them drink and forget their poverty
and remember their misery no more.
8 (L)Open your mouth for the mute,
for the rights of all who are destitute.[c]
9 Open your mouth, (M)judge righteously,
(N)defend the rights of (O)the poor and needy.
The Woman Who Fears the Lord
10 [d] (P)An excellent wife who can find?
She is far more precious than (Q)jewels.
11 The heart of her husband trusts in her,
and he will have no lack of gain.
12 She does him good, and not harm,
all the days of her life.
13 She (R)seeks wool and flax,
and works with willing hands.
14 She is like the ships of the merchant;
she brings her food from afar.
15 She (S)rises while it is yet night
and (T)provides food for her household
and portions for her maidens.
16 She considers a field and buys it;
with the fruit of her hands she plants a vineyard.
17 She (U)dresses herself[e] with strength
and makes her arms strong.
18 She perceives that her merchandise is profitable.
Her lamp does not go out at night.
19 She puts her hands to the distaff,
and her hands hold the spindle.
20 She (V)opens her hand to (W)the poor
and reaches out her hands to (X)the needy.
21 She is not afraid of snow for her household,
for all her household are clothed in (Y)scarlet.[f]

when he sits among the elders of the land.
24 She makes (AD)linen garments and sells them;
she delivers sashes to the merchant.

and she laughs at the time to come.

and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.
27 She looks well to the ways of her household
and does not eat the bread of idleness.
28 Her children rise up and call her blessed;
her husband also, and he praises her:

30 (AH)Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain,
but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.
31 Give her of the fruit of her hands,
