8 羔羊揭开第七印时，天上寂静无声，约半小时。 2 然后，我看见站在上帝面前的七位天使领受了七支号角。
3 另一位天使手里拿着金香炉上前来，站在祭坛旁边。他接过了许多香，把香和众圣徒的祈祷一起献在宝座前的金坛上。 4 这香发出的烟，连同众圣徒的祷告从那天使的手中向上升，直达上帝面前。 5 天使又拿着香炉，盛满祭坛的火，将它倒在地上，于是有雷鸣、巨响、闪电和地震。
天使吹号
6 这时，那七位拿着号角的天使也预备要吹号。
7 第一位天使吹响号角的时候，冰雹和火搀杂着血从天上倾盆而下。地的三分之一、树木的三分之一和一切的青草都被烧毁了。
8 第二位天使吹号的时候，一座好像燃烧的大山被丢进海里。海洋的三分之一变成了血， 9 海中的活物死了三分之一，船只也被毁了三分之一。
10 第三位天使吹号的时候，有一颗好像火炬般燃烧着的巨星从天上坠落在三分之一的江河溪流和水泉里。 11 这颗星名叫“苦艾”，它使三分之一的水都变苦了，许多人因为喝了这种苦水而死去。
12 第四位天使吹号的时候，太阳、月亮和星辰的三分之一都受到重击，以致失去了光辉，于是日间的三分之一暗淡无光，夜间也是如此。 13 我又看见有一只鹰在半空中飞翔，听见它大声宣告：“有祸了！有祸了！世上的居民有祸了！还有三位天使要吹响号角。”

Het zevende zegel en de bazuinen
8 Toen het Lam het zevende zegel verbrak, werd het stil in de hemel, ongeveer een half uur lang. 2 Ik zag de zeven engelen voor God staan en zij kregen allemaal een bazuin.
3 Een andere engel ging met een gouden wierookvat bij het altaar staan en kreeg heel veel reukwerk dat hij, samen met de gebeden van de gelovigen, op het gouden altaar voor de troon moest offeren. 4 En uit de hand van de engel die voor God stond, steeg de geur van de wierook omhoog, samen met de gebeden van de gelovigen. 5 Toen vulde de engel het wierookvat met vuur van het altaar en gooide het op de aarde. Het begon vreselijk te donderen, te rommelen en te bliksemen. De aarde beefde ervan.
6 De zeven engelen met de bazuinen maakten zich klaar om erop te blazen. 7 De eerste engel blies op zijn bazuin: hagel en vuur, vermengd met bloed, werden op de aarde gegooid. Een derde deel van de aarde en een derde deel van de bomen verbrandde en al het gras werd door de vlammen verteerd. 8 De tweede engel blies op zijn bazuin: er werd iets in de zee gegooid dat op een reusachtige brandende berg leek. Een derde deel van de zee veranderde in bloed 9 en een derde deel van de zeedieren ging dood en een derde deel van de schepen verging. 10 De derde engel blies op zijn bazuin: er viel een grote ster uit de hemel die brandde als een fakkel. Hij kwam terecht op een derde deel van de rivieren en op de waterbronnen. 11 De naam van de ster was ‘Bitter’. Een derde deel van het water werd bitter, en omdat het bitter was, stierven vele mensen ervan.
12 De vierde engel blies op zijn bazuin: een derde deel van de zon, de maan en de sterren werd door een zware slag getroffen. Daardoor werden zij voor een derde verduisterd. Zowel overdag als ʼs nachts gaven zij een derde minder licht. 13 Toen zag ik hoog in de lucht een arend vliegen en hij schreeuwde: ‘Och, hoe verschrikkelijk zal het voor de mensen op de aarde zijn, wanneer de drie andere engelen op hun bazuin blazen!’

The Seventh Seal and the Golden Censer
8 When he opened the seventh seal,(A) there was silence in heaven for about half an hour.
2 And I saw the seven angels(B) who stand before God, and seven trumpets were given to them.(C)
3 Another angel,(D) who had a golden censer, came and stood at the altar. He was given much incense to offer, with the prayers of all God’s people,(E) on the golden altar(F) in front of the throne. 4 The smoke of the incense, together with the prayers of God’s people, went up before God(G) from the angel’s hand. 5 Then the angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar,(H) and hurled it on the earth; and there came peals of thunder,(I) rumblings, flashes of lightning and an earthquake.(J)
The Trumpets
6 Then the seven angels who had the seven trumpets(K) prepared to sound them.
7 The first angel(L) sounded his trumpet, and there came hail and fire(M) mixed with blood, and it was hurled down on the earth. A third(N) of the earth was burned up, a third of the trees were burned up, and all the green grass was burned up.(O)
8 The second angel sounded his trumpet, and something like a huge mountain,(P) all ablaze, was thrown into the sea. A third(Q) of the sea turned into blood,(R) 9 a third(S) of the living creatures in the sea died, and a third of the ships were destroyed.
10 The third angel sounded his trumpet, and a great star, blazing like a torch, fell from the sky(T) on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water(U)— 11 the name of the star is Wormwood.[a] A third(V) of the waters turned bitter, and many people died from the waters that had become bitter.(W)
12 The fourth angel sounded his trumpet, and a third of the sun was struck, a third of the moon, and a third of the stars, so that a third(X) of them turned dark.(Y) A third of the day was without light, and also a third of the night.(Z)
13 As I watched, I heard an eagle that was flying in midair(AA) call out in a loud voice: “Woe! Woe! Woe(AB) to the inhabitants of the earth,(AC) because of the trumpet blasts about to be sounded by the other three angels!”

The Gold Censer. 3 Another angel came and stood at the altar,[c] holding a gold censer. He was given a great quantity of incense to offer, along with the prayers of all the holy ones, on the gold altar that was before the throne.(C) 4 The smoke of the incense along with the prayers of the holy ones went up before God from the hand of the angel. 5 Then the angel took the censer, filled it with burning coals from the altar, and hurled it down to the earth. There were peals of thunder, rumblings, flashes of lightning, and an earthquake.(D)
The First Four Trumpets. 6 The seven angels who were holding the seven trumpets prepared to blow them.(E)
7 When the first one blew his trumpet, there came hail and fire mixed with blood, which was hurled down to the earth. A third of the land was burned up, along with a third of the trees and all green grass.[d]
8 [e]When the second angel blew his trumpet, something like a large burning mountain was hurled into the sea. A third of the sea turned to blood,(F) 9 a third of the creatures living in the sea[f] died, and a third of the ships were wrecked.
10 When the third angel blew his trumpet, a large star burning like a torch fell from the sky. It fell on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water.(G) 11 The star was called “Wormwood,”[g] and a third of all the water turned to wormwood. Many people died from this water, because it was made bitter.(H)
12 When the fourth angel blew his trumpet, a third of the sun, a third of the moon, and a third of the stars were struck, so that a third of them became dark. The day lost its light for a third of the time, as did the night.(I)
13 Then I looked again and heard an eagle flying high overhead cry out in a loud voice, “Woe! Woe! Woe[h] to the inhabitants of the earth from the rest of the trumpet blasts that the three angels are about to blow!”

- 8:1–13 The breaking of the seventh seal produces at first silence and then seven symbolic disasters, each announced by a trumpet blast, of which the first four form a unit as did the first four seals. A minor liturgy (Rev 8:3–5) is enclosed by a vision of seven angels (Rev 8:2, 6). Then follow the first four trumpet blasts, each heralding catastrophes modeled on the plagues of Egypt affecting the traditional prophetic third (cf. Ez 5:12) of the earth, sea, fresh water, and stars (Rev 8:7–12). Finally, there is a vision of an eagle warning of the last three trumpet blasts (Rev 8:13).
- 8:1 Silence in heaven: as in Zep 1:7, a prelude to the eschatological woes that are to follow; cf. Introduction.
- 8:3 Altar: there seems to be only one altar in the heavenly temple, corresponding to the altar of holocausts in Rev 6:9, and here to the altar of incense in Jerusalem; cf. also Rev 9:13; 11:1; 14:18; 16:7.
- 8:7 This woe resembles the seventh plague of Egypt (Ex 9:23–24); cf. Jl 3:3.
- 8:8–11 The background of these two woes is the first plague of Egypt (Ex 7:20–21).
- 8:9 Creatures living in the sea: literally, “creatures in the sea that had souls.”
- 8:11 Wormwood: an extremely bitter and malignant plant symbolizing the punishment God inflicts on the ungodly; cf. Jer 9:12–14; 23:15.
- 8:13 Woe! Woe! Woe: each of the three woes pronounced by the angel represents a separate disaster; cf. Rev 9:12; 11:14. The final woe, released by the seventh trumpet blast, includes the plagues of Rev 16.
