Die fünfte Posaune
9 Da stieß der fünfte Engel in seine Posaune. Ich sah einen Stern, der vom Himmel auf die Erde gefallen war. Diesem Stern wurde der Schlüssel zu dem Schacht gegeben, der in den Abgrund hinabführt. 2 Er öffnete den Schacht, und heraus quoll beißender Rauch wie aus einem riesigen Schmelzofen. Die Luft war vom Qualm so erfüllt, dass man die Sonne nicht mehr sehen konnte.
3 Aus dem Rauch kamen Heuschrecken hervor und überfielen die Erde. Sie erhielten die Macht, wie Skorpione zu stechen. 4 Doch sie durften weder dem Gras noch den Bäumen oder irgendeiner Pflanze auf der Erde Schaden zufügen. Sie sollten nur die Menschen quälen, die nicht das Siegel Gottes auf ihrer Stirn trugen. 5 Es wurde ihnen nicht erlaubt, die Menschen zu töten, aber sie durften ihnen fünf Monate lang qualvolle Schmerzen zufügen, wie sie der Stich eines Skorpions hervorruft. 6 In dieser Zeit werden sich die Menschen verzweifelt den Tod wünschen, aber er wird sie nicht erlösen. Sie wollen nur noch sterben, aber der Tod wird vor ihnen fliehen.
7 Die Heuschrecken sahen aus wie Schlachtrosse, die in den Kampf ziehen. Auf ihren Köpfen glänzte es, als würden sie goldene Kronen tragen, und ihre Gesichter hatten menschliche Züge. 8 Sie hatten eine Mähne wie Frauenhaar und Zähne wie Löwen. 9 Brustschilde hatten sie wie Eisenpanzer, und ihre Flügelschläge dröhnten wie Streitwagen, die mit vielen Pferden bespannt in die Schlacht ziehen. 10 Sie hatten Schwänze und Stacheln wie Skorpione. Mit ihrem Gift konnten sie die Menschen fünf Monate lang quälen. 11 Als König herrschte über sie der Engel aus dem Abgrund. Auf Hebräisch heißt er Abaddon, auf Griechisch Apollyon. Das bedeutet »Zerstörer«.
12 Aber das ist noch nicht alles. Diesem ersten Unheil werden noch zwei weitere folgen.
Die sechste Posaune
13 Jetzt blies der sechste Engel seine Posaune. Ich hörte eine Stimme von allen vier Ecken[a] des goldenen Altars, der vor dem Thron Gottes steht. 14 Diese Stimme forderte den sechsten Engel auf: »Befrei die vier Engel, die am Euphrat, dem großen Strom, gefangen sind!« 15 Und die vier Engel wurden befreit. Auf dieses Jahr, diesen Monat, diesen Tag, ja, genau auf diese Stunde waren sie bereitgehalten worden, um ein Drittel der Menschheit zu töten. 16 Sie führten ein riesiges Heer mit zweihundert Millionen Reitern. Das ist die Zahl, die mir gesagt wurde.
17 Und dann sah ich sie in dieser Vision: Die Pferde trugen ebenso wie ihre Reiter feuerrot, dunkelblau und schwefelgelb glänzende Rüstungen. Mächtig wie Löwenköpfe waren die Köpfe der Pferde. Feuer, Rauch und brennender Schwefel schossen aus ihren Mäulern. 18 Mit diesen drei Waffen töteten sie ein Drittel der Menschheit. 19 Aber nicht nur aus ihren Mäulern kamen Tod und Zerstörung, auch mit ihren Schwänzen konnten sie die Menschen umbringen. Denn ihre Schwänze sahen aus wie Schlangen und hatten Köpfe, mit denen sie den Menschen Schaden zufügten.
20 Doch trotz all dieser entsetzlichen Katastrophen dachten die Überlebenden nicht daran, sich zu ändern und zu Gott umzukehren. Nach wie vor beteten sie die Dämonen an und ihre selbst gemachten Götzen aus Gold, Silber, Bronze, Stein oder Holz, die weder hören noch sehen noch laufen können. 21 Ja, die Menschen kehrten nicht um. Sie hörten nicht auf, einander umzubringen, Zauberei zu treiben, sexuell unmoralisch zu leben und einander zu bestehlen.

9 Puis le cinquième ange sonna de la trompette ; et je vis un astre qui était tombé du ciel sur la terre. La clé du puits de l’abîme lui fut donnée. 2 Il ouvrit le puits de l’abîme, et une fumée épaisse s’en éleva, comme celle d’une grande fournaise. Le soleil et l’air furent obscurcis par la fumée qui s’échappait du puits. 3 De cette fumée sortirent des sauterelles qui se répandirent sur la terre. Il leur fut donné un pouvoir semblable à celui des scorpions. 4 Elles reçurent l’ordre de ne pas faire de mal à l’herbe de la terre, ni à aucune plante verte, ni à aucun arbre, mais de s’attaquer seulement aux hommes qui ne portent pas le sceau de Dieu sur le front. 5 Il leur fut donné, non pas de les tuer, mais de les torturer pendant cinq mois. La douleur qu’elles causaient ressemblait à celle qu’une piqûre de scorpion inflige à un homme. 6 En ces jours-là, les hommes chercheront la mort mais ils ne la trouveront pas. Ils l’appelleront de leurs vœux, mais la mort les fuira.
7 Ces sauterelles ressemblaient à des chevaux harnachés pour la bataille. Elles avaient sur la tête comme des couronnes d’or, et leur face ressemblait à un visage humain. 8 Leur chevelure était pareille à celle des femmes, et leurs dents à celles des lions. 9 Leur thorax paraissait cuirassé de fer, et le bruit de leurs ailes évoquait le fracas d’une charge de chars tirés pour le combat par de nombreux chevaux. 10 Elles avaient des queues armées de dards comme celles des scorpions. C’est avec leur queue qu’elles pouvaient torturer les hommes pendant cinq mois.
11 Elles avaient pour roi l’ange de l’abîme qui s’appelle en hébreu Abaddon et en grec Apollyon.
12 Le premier malheur est passé. Voici : deux malheurs encore viennent après lui.
La sixième trompette – le deuxième malheur : invasion d’une formidable armée
13 Le sixième ange sonna de la trompette. J’entendis alors une voix sortant des quatre cornes de l’autel d’or qui se trouve devant Dieu. 14 Elle disait au sixième ange qui tenait la trompette : Libère les quatre anges qui sont enchaînés au bord du grand fleuve, l’Euphrate[a].
15 On délia donc les quatre anges tenus prêts pour cette heure, ce jour, ce mois et cette année, afin qu’ils exterminent le tiers de l’humanité. 16 Ils étaient deux cents millions de cavaliers combattants. C’était leur nombre, tel que je l’entendis.
17 Voici comment, dans ma vision, je vis les chevaux et leurs cavaliers : ils portaient des cuirasses rouge feu, bleu turquoise et jaune soufre ; les têtes des chevaux rappelaient celles des lions et leur gueule crachait du feu, de la fumée et du soufre. 18 Par ces trois fléaux qui sortaient de leur gueule : le feu, la fumée et le soufre, le tiers de l’humanité fut exterminé. 19 Car le pouvoir des chevaux se trouvait dans leur gueule et dans leur queue. En effet, leurs queues ressemblaient à des serpents, elles étaient pourvues de têtes qui leur servaient à nuire.
20 Mais le reste des hommes qui avaient survécu à ces fléaux, ne renoncèrent pas aux œuvres de leurs mains ; ils ne cessèrent pas d’adorer les démons ainsi que les idoles d’or, d’argent, de bronze, de pierre et de bois, bien qu’elles soient incapables de voir, d’entendre et de bouger. 21 Ils ne renoncèrent pas à leurs meurtres, à leurs pratiques magiques, à leur immoralité et à leur malhonnêteté.

The Fifth Trumpet.[a] 1 Then the fifth angel blew his trumpet, and I saw a star[b] that had fallen from the sky to the earth. It was given the key for the passage to the abyss. 2 It opened the passage to the abyss,(A) and smoke came up out of the passage like smoke from a huge furnace. The sun and the air were darkened by the smoke from the passage.(B) 3 Locusts came out of the smoke onto the land, and they were given the same power as scorpions[c] of the earth.(C) 4 They were told not to harm the grass of the earth or any plant or any tree, but only those people who did not have the seal of God on their foreheads. 5 They were not allowed to kill them but only to torment them for five months;[d] the torment they inflicted was like that of a scorpion when it stings a person. 6 During that time these people will seek death but will not find it, and they will long to die but death will escape them.(D)
7 [e]The appearance of the locusts was like that of horses ready for battle. On their heads they wore what looked like crowns of gold; their faces were like human faces,(E) 8 and they had hair like women’s hair. Their teeth were like lions’ teeth,(F) 9 and they had chests like iron breastplates. The sound of their wings was like the sound of many horse-drawn chariots racing into battle. 10 They had tails like scorpions, with stingers; with their tails they had power to harm people for five months. 11 They had as their king the angel of the abyss, whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon[f] and in Greek Apollyon.
12 The first woe has passed, but there are two more to come.
The Sixth Trumpet.[g] 13 Then the sixth angel blew his trumpet, and I heard a voice coming from the [four][h] horns of the gold altar before God,(G) 14 telling the sixth angel who held the trumpet, “Release the four angels[i] who are bound at the banks of the great river Euphrates.” 15 So the four angels were released, who were prepared for this hour, day, month, and year to kill a third of the human race. 16 The number of cavalry troops was two hundred million; I heard their number. 17 Now in my vision this is how I saw the horses and their riders. They wore red, blue, and yellow breastplates,[j] and the horses’ heads were like heads of lions, and out of their mouths came fire, smoke, and sulfur.(H) 18 By these three plagues of fire, smoke, and sulfur that came out of their mouths a third of the human race was killed. 19 For the power of the horses is in their mouths and in their tails; for their tails are like snakes, with heads that inflict harm.
20 The rest of the human race, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands,[k] to give up the worship of demons and idols made from gold, silver, bronze, stone, and wood, which cannot see or hear or walk.(I) 21 Nor did they repent of their murders, their magic potions, their unchastity, or their robberies.

- 9:1–12 The fifth trumpet heralds a woe containing elements from the eighth and ninth plagues of Egypt (Ex 10:12–15, 21–23) but specifically reminiscent of the invasion of locusts in Jl 1:4–2:10.
- 9:1 A star: late Judaism represented fallen powers as stars (Is 14:12–15; Lk 10:18; Jude 13), but a comparison with Rev 1:20 and Rev 20:1 suggests that here it means an angel. The passage to the abyss: referring to Sheol, the netherworld, where Satan and the fallen angels are kept for a thousand years, to be cast afterwards into the pool of fire; cf. Rev 20:7–10. The abyss was conceived of as a vast subterranean cavern full of fire. Its only link with the earth was a kind of passage or mine shaft, which was kept locked.
- 9:3 Scorpions: their poisonous sting was proverbial; Ez 2:6; Lk 11:12.
- 9:5 For five months: more or less corresponding to the life-span of locusts.
- 9:7–10 Eight characteristics are listed to show the eschatological and diabolical nature of these locusts.
- 9:11 Abaddon: Hebrew (more precisely, Aramaic) for destruction or ruin. Apollyon: Greek for the “Destroyer.”
- 9:13–21 The sixth trumpet heralds a woe representing another diabolical attack symbolized by an invasion by the Parthians living east of the Euphrates; see note on Rev 6:2. At the appointed time (Rev 9:15), the frightful horses act as God’s agents of judgment. The imaginative details are not to be taken literally; see Introduction and the note on Rev 6:12–14.
- 9:13 [Four]: many Greek manuscripts and versions omit the word. The horns were situated at the four corners of the altar (Ex 27:2; 30:2–3); see note on Rev 8:3.
- 9:14–15 The four angels: they are symbolic of the destructive activity that will be extended throughout the universe.
- 9:17 Blue: literally, “hyacinth-colored.” Yellow: literally, “sulfurous.”
- 9:20 The works of their hands: i.e., the gods their hands had made.

17 The horses and riders I saw in my vision looked like this: Their breastplates were fiery red, dark blue, and yellow as sulfur. The heads of the horses resembled the heads of lions, and out of their mouths(AF) came fire, smoke and sulfur.(AG) 18 A third(AH) of mankind was killed(AI) by the three plagues of fire, smoke and sulfur(AJ) that came out of their mouths. 19 The power of the horses was in their mouths and in their tails; for their tails were like snakes, having heads with which they inflict injury.
20 The rest of mankind who were not killed by these plagues still did not repent(AK) of the work of their hands;(AL) they did not stop worshiping demons,(AM) and idols of gold, silver, bronze, stone and wood—idols that cannot see or hear or walk.(AN) 21 Nor did they repent(AO) of their murders, their magic arts,(AP) their sexual immorality(AQ) or their thefts.
