Die beiden Zeugen Gottes

11 Nun wurde mir ein Stab aus Schilfrohr gegeben, wie man ihn zum Messen verwendet. »Geh und miss den Tempel Gottes aus, auch den Altar«, sagte ´eine Stimme` zu mir, »und ´zähl` die Menschen, die im Tempel anbeten! 2 Aber lass beim Vermessen den äußeren Vorhof des Tempels aus, denn er ist den heidnischen Völkern preisgegeben worden, und sie werden die heilige Stadt unterwerfen und zweiundvierzig Monate lang besetzt halten[a].«

3 »Doch werde ich«, ´fuhr die Stimme fort,` »meine beiden Zeugen zu ihnen schicken[b], und sie werden ´während dieser ganzen Zeit` – tausendzweihundertsechzig Tage lang –, in Sacktuch gehüllt, als Propheten ´unter ihnen` auftreten.«[c]

4 Diese beiden Zeugen sind die zwei Ölbäume und die zwei Leuchter, ´von denen es in der Schrift heißt, dass` sie vor dem Herrn stehen, dem Herrscher über die ganze Erde[d]. 5 Wenn jemand versucht, ihnen etwas anzutun, wird Feuer aus ihrem Mund kommen und ihn vernichten. So wird es allen ihren Feinden ergehen[e]; jeder, der ihnen etwas antun will, wird auf diese Weise umkommen. 6 Sie haben die Macht, den Himmel zu verschließen, sodass während der Zeit, in der sie als Propheten auftreten, kein Regen fällt. Sie haben auch die Macht, die Gewässer in Blut zu verwandeln. Sooft sie es wollen, können sie jedes nur erdenkliche Unheil über die Erde hereinbrechen lassen.

7 Wenn sie ihren Auftrag als Zeugen ´Gottes` erfüllt haben, wird das Tier, das aus dem Abgrund heraufsteigt, gegen sie kämpfen. Es wird sie besiegen und umbringen. 8 Ihre Leichen ´wird man` in der großen Stadt auf offener Straße[f] ´liegen lassen`, in derselben Stadt, in der schon ihr Herr gekreuzigt wurde und die – was symbolisch zu verstehen ist[g] – Sodom[h] oder auch Ägypten[i] heißt. 9 Während dreieinhalb Tagen werden sich Menschen aus den verschiedensten Völkern und Stämmen, Menschen unterschiedlichster Sprache und Kultur am Anblick der beiden Toten weiden[j], und man wird[k] es niemand erlauben, sie zu bestatten[l]. 10 Überall auf der Welt werden die Menschen jubeln und Freudenfeste feiern und sich[m] gegenseitig Geschenke senden, denn diese beiden Propheten hatten ihnen das Leben zur Qual gemacht.

11 Doch nach den dreieinhalb Tagen wird der Lebenshauch Gottes in sie zurückkehren[n], und zum größten Entsetzen aller, die das miterleben, werden sie ´plötzlich wieder lebendig werden und` aufstehen. 12 Aus dem Himmel werden sie eine mächtige Stimme hören, die ihnen zuruft[o]: »Kommt hier herauf!« Daraufhin werden sie vor den Augen ihrer Feinde in einer Wolke in den Himmel emporgehoben werden[p]. 13 Im selben Augenblick[q] wird ein heftiges Erdbeben ´die Stadt` erschüttern. Ein Zehntel der Gebäude[r] wird einstürzen, und siebentausend Menschen werden den Tod finden. Zutiefst erschrocken werden dann die Überlebenden dem Gott, der im Himmel thront,[s] die Ehre erweisen, ´die ihm gebührt`.

14 Das zweite Unheil, das der Wehruf angekündigt hat,[t] ist vorüber; doch das dritte steht unmittelbar bevor.

Die siebte Posaune: Die Herrschaft Gottes und des Messias

15 Nun blies der siebte Engel seine Posaune. Daraufhin erklang im Himmel ein mächtiger, vielstimmiger Jubelgesang[u]:

»Jetzt gehört die Herrschaft über die Welt ´endgültig` unserem Herrn
und dem, den er als König eingesetzt hat – Christus[v].
Ja, ´unser Herr` wird für immer und ewig regieren.«

16 Die vierundzwanzig Ältesten, die vor Gott auf ihren Thronen saßen, warfen sich vor ihm nieder und beteten ihn an. 17 Sie riefen:

»Herr und Gott, du allmächtiger Herrscher,
der du bist und der du warst, dir gilt unser Dank!
Denn nun hast du deine große Macht unter Beweis gestellt[w]
und hast die Herrschaft angetreten.
18 Die Völker hatten sich im Zorn gegen dich erhoben,
aber jetzt entlädt sich dein Zorn über sie.
Die Zeit ist gekommen, wo über die Toten Gericht gehalten wird
und wo deine Diener, die Propheten, ihren Lohn erhalten
und mit ihnen alle, die zu deinem heiligen Volk gehören[x]
und sich dir[y] in Ehrfurcht unterstellen, Kleine und Große.
Aber die, die die Erde zugrunde richten,
werden nun selbst zugrunde gerichtet werden.«

19 Dann öffnete sich der Tempel Gottes im Himmel, und die Bundeslade[z], die im Tempel steht, wurde sichtbar. Blitze zuckten auf, begleitet von Donnergrollen und Donnerschlägen, die Erde bebte, und ein furchtbarer Hagelsturm ging ´über die Erde` nieder.

Der Auftrag der beiden Zeugen

11 Nun erhielt ich ein langes Rohr als Messlatte, und jemand forderte mich auf: »Steh auf und miss den Tempel Gottes aus und den Altar. Zähl alle, die dort beten. 2 Nur den äußeren Tempelvorhof sollst du nicht messen. Denn Gott hat ihn den heidnischen Völkern preisgegeben. 42 Monate lang werden sie die Heilige Stadt belagern und zerstören. 3 Ich werde ihnen meine zwei Zeugen schicken. Sie kommen in Trauerkleidung und werden in diesen 1260 Tagen verkünden, was Gott ihnen eingegeben hat.«

4 Diese beiden Zeugen sind die zwei Ölbäume und die zwei Leuchter, die der Herr der ganzen Welt dazu erwählt hat, ihm zu dienen. 5 Wer es wagt, sie anzugreifen, wird durch Feuer aus ihrem Mund getötet. Ja, wer sich an ihnen vergreift, der wird sterben. 6 Sie haben die Macht, den Himmel zu verschließen, damit es nicht regnet, solange sie im Auftrag Gottes sprechen. Ebenso liegt es in ihrer Macht, jedes Gewässer in Blut zu verwandeln und Unheil über die Erde zu bringen, sooft sie wollen.

7 Wenn sie Gottes Auftrag ausgeführt haben, wird das Tier, das aus dem Abgrund heraufsteigt, gegen sie kämpfen. Es wird siegen und die beiden Zeugen töten. 8 Ihre Leichen wird man auf dem Platz der großen Stadt zur Schau stellen, in der auch ihr Herr gekreuzigt wurde. Diese Stadt ist – geistlich gesprochen – wie ein neues »Sodom« oder »Ägypten«. 9 Menschen aus allen Völkern, Stämmen, Sprachen und Nationen werden die Toten sehen, die dort dreieinhalb Tage lang liegen. Denn man wird es nicht erlauben, sie zu bestatten. 10 Alle Menschen auf der Erde werden über den Tod der beiden Zeugen so erleichtert sein, dass sie Freudenfeste feiern und sich gegenseitig Geschenke machen. Denn diese beiden Propheten haben ihr Leben unerträglich gemacht.

11 Nach dreieinhalb Tagen aber wird Gottes Lebensgeist in sie zurückkehren, und sie werden wieder aufstehen! Alle, die das sehen, werden wie gelähmt sein vor Angst und Schrecken. 12 Dann fordert eine gewaltige Stimme vom Himmel die beiden Zeugen auf: »Kommt herauf!« Vor den Augen ihrer Feinde werden sie dann in einer Wolke zum Himmel hinaufgehoben. 13 In demselben Augenblick wird ein schweres Erdbeben die Erde erschüttern. Ein Zehntel der Stadt stürzt ein, und siebentausend Menschen kommen ums Leben. Die Überlebenden werden entsetzt sein. Sie werden sich endlich Gott, der im Himmel regiert, unterwerfen und ihm die Ehre geben.

14 Aber das Unheil ist noch immer nicht vorüber. Der zweiten Schreckenszeit wird sehr bald eine dritte folgen.

Die siebte Posaune

15 Jetzt ertönte die Posaune des siebten Engels. Und im Himmel erklangen mächtige Stimmen: »Von jetzt an gehört die Herrschaft über die Welt unserem Herrn und dem, den er als König auserwählt und eingesetzt hat: Jesus Christus[a]. Gott wird für immer und ewig herrschen!« 16 Die vierundzwanzig Ältesten[b], die vor Gott auf ihren Thronen sitzen, warfen sich vor ihm nieder 17 und riefen:

»Wir danken dir, Herr,
du großer, allmächtiger Gott,
der du bist und immer warst.
Du hast deine große Macht bewiesen
und die Herrschaft angetreten.
18 Die Völker haben sich im Zorn
gegen dich aufgelehnt.
Darum trifft sie jetzt dein Zorn.
Die Zeit des Gerichts ist gekommen,
und die Toten wirst du richten.
Allen wirst du ihren Lohn geben:
deinen Dienern, den Propheten,
und ebenso allen, die dir gehören
und Ehrfurcht vor dir haben,
den Großen wie den Kleinen.
Aber die unsere Erde ins Verderben
gestürzt haben, wirst du vernichten.«

19 Da öffnete sich der Tempel Gottes im Himmel, und die Bundeslade war zu sehen. Blitze zuckten, und Donner, gewaltige Stimmen, Erdbeben und schwere Hagelstürme erschütterten die Erde.

11 Then[a] a measuring rod[b] like a staff was given to me, and I was told,[c] “Get up and measure the temple of God, and the altar, and the ones who worship there. 2 But[d] do not measure the outer courtyard[e] of the temple; leave it out,[f] because it has been given to the Gentiles,[g] and they will trample on the holy city[h] for forty-two months. 3 And I will grant my two witnesses authority[i] to prophesy for 1,260 days, dressed in sackcloth.” 4 (These are the two olive trees and the two lampstands that stand before the Lord of the earth.)[j] 5 If[k] anyone wants to harm them, fire comes out of their mouths[l] and completely consumes[m] their enemies. If[n] anyone wants to harm them, they must be killed this way. 6 These two have the power[o] to close up the sky so that it does not rain during the time[p] they are prophesying. They[q] have power[r] to turn the waters to blood and to strike the earth with every kind of plague whenever they want. 7 When[s] they have completed their testimony, the beast that comes up from the abyss will make war on them and conquer[t] them and kill them. 8 Their[u] corpses will lie in the street[v] of the great city that is symbolically[w] called Sodom and Egypt, where their Lord was also crucified. 9 For three and a half days those from every[x] people, tribe,[y] nation, and language will look at their corpses, because they will not permit them to be placed in a tomb.[z] 10 And those who live on the earth will rejoice over them and celebrate, even sending gifts to each other, because these two prophets had tormented those who live on the earth. 11 But[aa] after three and a half days a breath of life from God entered them, and they stood on their feet, and tremendous fear seized[ab] those who were watching them. 12 Then[ac] they[ad] heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them: “Come up here!” So the two prophets[ae] went up to heaven in a cloud while[af] their enemies stared at them. 13 Just then[ag] a major earthquake took place and a tenth of the city collapsed; seven thousand people[ah] were killed in the earthquake, and the rest were terrified and gave glory to the God of heaven.

14 The second woe has come and gone;[ai] the third is coming quickly.

The Seventh Trumpet

15 Then[aj] the seventh angel blew his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven saying:

“The kingdom of the world
has become the kingdom of our Lord
and of his Christ,[ak]
and he will reign for ever and ever.”

16 Then[al] the twenty-four elders who are seated on their thrones before God threw themselves down with their faces to the ground[am] and worshiped God 17 with these words:[an]

“We give you thanks, Lord God, the All-Powerful,[ao]
the one who is and who was,
because you have taken your great power
and begun to reign.[ap]
18 The[aq] nations[ar] were enraged,
but[as] your wrath has come,
and the time has come for the dead to be judged,
and the time has come to give to your servants,[at]
the prophets, their reward,
as well as to the saints
and to those who revere[au] your name, both small and great,
and the time has come[av] to destroy those who destroy[aw] the earth.”

19 Then[ax] the temple of God in heaven was opened and the ark of his covenant was visible within his temple. And there were flashes of lightning, roaring,[ay] crashes of thunder, an earthquake, and a great hailstorm.[az]

13 At that very hour there was a severe earthquake(AD) and a tenth of the city collapsed. Seven thousand people were killed in the earthquake, and the survivors were terrified and gave glory(AE) to the God of heaven.(AF)

14 The second woe has passed; the third woe is coming soon.(AG)

The Seventh Trumpet

15 The seventh angel sounded his trumpet,(AH) and there were loud voices(AI) in heaven, which said:

“The kingdom of the world has become
    the kingdom of our Lord and of his Messiah,(AJ)
    and he will reign for ever and ever.”(AK)

16 And the twenty-four elders,(AL) who were seated on their thrones before God, fell on their faces(AM) and worshiped God, 17 saying:

“We give thanks(AN) to you, Lord God Almighty,(AO)
    the One who is and who was,(AP)
because you have taken your great power
    and have begun to reign.(AQ)
18 The nations were angry,(AR)
    and your wrath has come.
The time has come for judging the dead,(AS)
    and for rewarding your servants the prophets(AT)
and your people who revere your name,
    both great and small(AU)—
and for destroying those who destroy the earth.”

19 Then God’s temple(AV) in heaven was opened, and within his temple was seen the ark of his covenant.(AW) And there came flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder,(AX) an earthquake and a severe hailstorm.(AY)
