Obadiah 11-17
Christian Standard Bible
11 On the day you stood aloof,(A)
on the day strangers captured his wealth,[a]
while foreigners entered his city gate
and cast lots for Jerusalem,(B)
you were just like one of them.(C)
12 Do not[b] gloat over your brother(D)
in the day of his calamity;
do not rejoice over the people of Judah(E)
in the day of their destruction;
do not boastfully mock[c](F)
in the day of distress.(G)
13 Do not enter my people’s city gate
in the day of their disaster.(H)
Yes, you—do not gloat over their misery
in the day of their disaster,
and do not appropriate their possessions(I)
in the day of their disaster.
14 Do not stand at the crossroads[d](J)
to cut off their fugitives,
and do not hand over their survivors
in the day of distress.
Judgment of the Nations
15 For the day of the Lord(K) is near,
against all the nations.(L)
As you have done,(M) it will be done to you;
what you deserve will return on your own head.(N)
16 As you have drunk on my holy mountain,(O)
so all the nations will drink continually.(P)
They will drink and gulp down
and be as though they had never been.
17 But there will be a deliverance on Mount Zion,(Q)
and it will be holy;(R)
the house of Jacob will dispossess(S)
those who dispossessed them.[e](T)

God’s Call for Repentance
12 Even now—
this is the Lord’s declaration—
turn to me with all your heart,(A)
with fasting, weeping, and mourning.(B)
13 Tear your hearts,(C)
not just your clothes,(D)
and return to the Lord your God.
For he is gracious and compassionate,
slow to anger, abounding in faithful love,
and he relents from sending disaster.(E)
14 Who knows? He may turn and relent(F)
and leave a blessing behind him,(G)
so you can offer a grain offering and a drink offering
to the Lord your God.(H)
15 Blow the ram’s horn in Zion!(I)
Announce a sacred fast;(J)
proclaim a solemn assembly.
16 Gather the people;
sanctify the congregation;(K)
assemble the aged;[a](L)
gather the infants,
even babies nursing at the breast.
Let the groom leave his bedroom,(M)
and the bride her honeymoon chamber.
17 Let the priests,(N) the Lord’s ministers,
weep between the portico and the altar.(O)
Let them say,
“Have pity on your people, Lord,(P)
and do not make your inheritance a disgrace,(Q)
an object of scorn among the nations.
Why should it be said among the peoples,
‘Where is their God?’” (R)
God’s Response to His People
18 Then the Lord became jealous for his land(S) and spared his people.(T) 19 The Lord answered his people:
Look, I am about to send you
grain, new wine, and fresh oil.(U)
You will be satiated with them,
and I will no longer make you
a disgrace among the nations.(V)

Christian Standard Bible
12 But before all these things, they will lay their hands on you(A) and persecute(B) you. They will hand you over to the synagogues(C) and prisons,(D) and you will be brought before kings and governors(E) because of my name. 13 This will give you an opportunity to bear witness.(F) 14 Therefore make up your minds[a] not to prepare your defense ahead of time,(G) 15 for I will give you such words(H) and a wisdom(I) that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict.(J) 16 You will even be betrayed by parents, brothers, relatives, and friends.(K) They will kill some of you. 17 You will be hated by everyone because of my name,(L) 18 but not a hair of your head will be lost.(M) 19 By your endurance, gain[b] your lives.(N)
