¹¹ This is what the Lord says:

³ but Esau I have hated,^(A) and I have turned his hill country into a wasteland^(B) and left his inheritance to the desert jackals.^(C)”

⁴ Edom^(D) may say, “Though we have been crushed, we will rebuild^(E) the ruins.”

But this is what the Lord Almighty says: “They may build, but I will demolish.^(F) They will be called the Wicked Land, a people always under the wrath of the Lord.^(G)

⁹ I will make you desolate forever;^(A) your towns will not be inhabited. Then you will know that I am the Lord.^(B)

Edom Denies Israel Passage

¹⁴ Moses sent messengers from Kadesh^(A) to the king of Edom,^(B) saying:

¹⁸ But Edom^(M) answered:

¹⁹ The Israelites replied:

²⁰ Again they answered:

Then Edom^(R) came out against them with a large and powerful army. ²¹ Since Edom refused to let them go through their territory,^(S) Israel turned away from them.^(T)

⁴¹ Esau held a grudge^(A) against Jacob^(B) because of the blessing his father had given him. He said to himself, “The days of mourning^(C) for my father are near; then I will kill^(D) my brother Jacob.”^(E)
