Edom Will Be Humbled

The vision of Obadiah.

Thus says the Lord [a]God concerning (A)Edom—

(B)We have heard a report from the Lord,
And an (C)envoy has been sent among the nations saying,
(D)Arise and let us go against her for battle”—
“Behold, I will make you (E)small among the nations;
You are greatly despised.
“The (F)arrogance of your heart has deceived you,
You who live in the clefts of [b]the (G)rock,
In the loftiness of your dwelling place,
Who say in your heart,
(H)Who will bring me down to earth?’
“Though you (I)build high like the eagle,
Though you set your nest among the (J)stars,
From there I will bring you down,” declares the Lord.
“If (K)thieves came to you,
If [c]robbers by night—
O how you will be ruined!—
Would they not steal only [d]until they had enough?
If grape gatherers came to you,
(L)Would they not leave some gleanings?
“O how Esau will be (M)ransacked,
And his hidden treasures searched out!
“All the (N)men [e]allied with you
Will send you forth to the border,
And the men at peace with you
Will deceive you and overpower you.
They who eat your (O)bread
Will set an ambush for you.
(There is (P)no understanding [f]in him.)
“Will I not on that day,” declares the Lord,
(Q)Destroy wise men from Edom
And understanding from the mountain of Esau?
“Then your (R)mighty men will be dismayed, O (S)Teman,
So that everyone may be (T)cut off from the mountain of Esau by slaughter.

10 “Because of (U)violence to your brother Jacob,
[g]You will be covered with shame,
(V)And you will be cut off forever.
11 “On the day that you (W)stood aloof,
On the day that strangers carried off his wealth,
And foreigners entered his gate
And (X)cast lots for Jerusalem—
(Y)You too were as one of them.
12 (Z)Do not [h]gloat over your brother’s day,
The day of his misfortune.
And (AA)do not rejoice over the sons of Judah
In the day of their destruction;
Yes, (AB)do not [i]boast
In the day of their distress.
13 “Do not enter the gate of My people
In the (AC)day of their disaster.
Yes, you, do not [j]gloat over their calamity
In the day of their disaster.
And do not (AD)loot their wealth
In the day of their disaster.
14 “Do not (AE)stand at the fork of the road
To cut down their fugitives;
And do not imprison their survivors
In the day of their distress.

The Day of the Lord and the Future

15 “For the (AF)day of the Lord draws near on all the nations.
(AG)As you have done, it will be done to you.
Your (AH)dealings will return on your own head.
16 “Because just as you (AI)drank on (AJ)My holy mountain,
All the nations (AK)will drink continually.
They will drink and [k]swallow
And become as if they had never existed.
17 “But on Mount (AL)Zion there will be those who escape,
And it will be holy.
And the house of Jacob will (AM)possess their possessions.
18 “Then the house of Jacob will be a (AN)fire
And the house of Joseph a flame;
But the house of Esau will be as stubble.
And they will set [l]them on fire and consume [m]them,
So that there will be (AO)no survivor of the house of Esau,”
For the Lord has spoken.
19 Then those of the [n]Negev will (AP)possess the mountain of Esau,
And those of the [o]Shephelah the (AQ)Philistine plain;
Also, (AR)possess the territory of Ephraim and the territory of Samaria,
And Benjamin will possess Gilead.
20 And the exiles of this host of the sons of Israel,
Who are among the Canaanites as far as (AS)Zarephath,
And the exiles of Jerusalem who are in Sepharad
Will possess the (AT)cities of the Negev.
21 The (AU)deliverers will ascend Mount Zion
To judge the mountain of Esau,
And the (AV)kingdom will be the Lord’s.

The High Priestly Prayer

17 Jesus spoke these things; and (A)lifting up His eyes to heaven, He said, “Father, the hour has come; (B)glorify Your Son, that the Son may glorify You, even as (C)You gave Him authority over all flesh, that (D)to [a]all whom You have given Him, (E)He may give eternal life. This is eternal life, that they may know You, (F)the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom (G)You have sent. (H)I glorified You on the earth, [b](I)having accomplished the work which You have given Me to do. Now, Father, (J)glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had (K)with You before the world was.

(L)I have manifested Your name to the men whom (M)You gave Me out of the world; they were (N)Yours and You gave them to Me, and they have (O)kept Your word. Now they have come to know that everything You have given Me is from You; for (P)the words which You gave Me (Q)I have given to them; and they received them and truly understood that (R)I came forth from You, and they believed that (S)You sent Me. (T)I ask on their behalf; (U)I do not ask on behalf of the world, but of those whom (V)You have given Me; for (W)they are Yours; 10 and (X)all things that are Mine are Yours, and Yours are Mine; and I have been glorified in them. 11 I am no longer in the world; and yet (Y)they themselves are in the world, and (Z)I come to You. (AA)Holy Father, keep them in Your name, the name (AB)which You have given Me, that (AC)they may be one even as We are. 12 While I was with them, I was keeping them in Your name (AD)which You have given Me; and I guarded them and (AE)not one of them perished but (AF)the [c]son of perdition, so that the (AG)Scripture would be fulfilled.

The Disciples in the World

13 But now (AH)I come to You; and (AI)these things I speak in the world so that they may have My (AJ)joy made full in themselves. 14 I have given them Your word; and (AK)the world has hated them, because (AL)they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. 15 I do not ask You to take them out of the world, but to keep them [d]from [e](AM)the evil one. 16 (AN)They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. 17 (AO)Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth. 18 As (AP)You sent Me into the world, (AQ)I also have sent them into the world. 19 For their sakes I (AR)sanctify Myself, that they themselves also may be (AS)sanctified (AT)in truth.

20 “I do not ask on behalf of these alone, but for those also who believe in Me through their word; 21 that they may all be one; (AU)even as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, (AV)so that the world may [f]believe that (AW)You sent Me.

Their Future Glory

22 The (AX)glory which You have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one, just as We are one; 23 (AY)I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected [g]in unity, so that the world may [h]know that (AZ)You sent Me, and (BA)loved them, even as You have loved Me. 24 Father, I desire that (BB)they also, whom You have given Me, (BC)be with Me where I am, so that they may see My (BD)glory which You have given Me, for You loved Me before (BE)the foundation of the world.

25 “O (BF)righteous Father, [i]although (BG)the world has not known You, yet I have known You; and these have known that (BH)You sent Me; 26 and (BI)I have made Your name known to them, and will make it known, so that (BJ)the love with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them.”
