1 Prorocia lui Obadia. Aşa vorbeşte Domnul Dumnezeu despre Edom(A): „Noi am auzit o veste(B) din partea Domnului şi un sol a fost trimis cu ea printre neamuri, zicând: ‘Sculaţi-vă să mergem împotriva Edomului ca să ne războim cu el!’ 2 Iată, te voi face mic printre neamuri, vei fi cel mai dispreţuit. 3 Căci mândria inimii tale te-a dus în rătăcire, pe tine, care locuieşti în crăpăturile stâncilor(C) şi domneşti în înălţime, de aceea tu zici(D) în tine însuţi: ‘Cine mă va arunca la pământ?’ 4 Dar, chiar dacă ai locui tot atât de sus(E) ca vulturul, chiar dacă ţi-ai aşeza cuibul(F) între stele, tot te voi arunca jos şi de acolo, zice Domnul. 5 Dacă ar fi intrat(G) la tine nişte hoţi sau nişte tâlhari de noapte – cum eşti de pustiit! –, ar fi luat ei oare mai mult decât ar fi putut? Dacă ar fi venit nişte culegători de vie la tine, n-ar fi lăsat(H) ei niciun strugure pe urmă? 6 Vai! Ce scormonit este Esau! Cum i s-au descoperit comorile! 7 Toţi cei uniţi(I) cu tine te-au izgonit înapoi până la hotar, prietenii tăi te-au înşelat şi te-au stăpânit. Cei ce mâncau din pâinea ta ţi-au întins curse pe care nu le-ai băgat de seamă(J)! 8 Oare, zice Domnul, nu(K) voi pierde Eu în ziua aceea pe cei înţelepţi din Edom şi priceperea din muntele lui Esau? 9 Vitejii(L) tăi, Temane(M), se vor înspăimânta, pentru ca toţi cei din muntele lui Esau să piară în măcel. 10 Din pricina silniciei(N) făcute împotriva fratelui tău Iacov, vei fi acoperit de ruşine şi vei fi nimicit cu desăvârşire(O) pentru totdeauna. 11 Căci în ziua când stăteai în faţa lui, în ziua când străinii îi luau averea, când străinii intrau pe porţile lui şi aruncau sorţul(P) asupra Ierusalimului şi tu erai atunci ca unul din ei! 12 Nu trebuia să te uiţi mulţumit(Q) la ziua fratelui tău, în ziua(R) nenorocirii lui, nu trebuia să te bucuri(S) de copiii lui Iuda în ziua pieirii lor şi nu trebuia să vorbeşti cu semeţie în ziua strâmtorării! 13 Nici nu trebuia să intri pe porţile poporului Meu în ziua nenorocirii lui, nici nu trebuia să te bucuri de nenorocirea lui în ziua prăpădului lui şi nu trebuia să pui mâna pe bogăţiile lui în ziua prăpădului lui! 14 Nu trebuia să stai la răspântii, ca să nimiceşti pe fugarii lui, şi nici nu trebuia să dai în mâna vrăjmaşului pe cei ce scăpaseră din el în ziua necazului lui! 15 Căci ziua Domnului este aproape(T) pentru toate neamurile. Cum(U) ai făcut, aşa ţi se va face; faptele tale se vor întoarce asupra capului tău. 16 Căci, după cum aţi băut(V) paharul mâniei voi, cei de pe muntele Meu cel sfânt, tot aşa toate neamurile îl vor bea necurmat; vor bea, vor sorbi din el şi vor fi ca şi când n-ar fi fost niciodată. 17 Dar(W) mântuirea(X) va fi pe muntele Sionului, el va fi sfânt şi casa lui Iacov îşi va lua înapoi moşiile. 18 Casa lui Iacov va fi(Y) un foc şi casa lui Iosif, o flacără, dar casa lui Esau va fi miriştea pe care o vor aprinde şi o vor mistui, şi nu va mai rămâne niciunul din casa lui Esau, căci Domnul a vorbit! 19 Cei de la miazăzi vor stăpâni(Z) muntele lui Esau şi cei din câmpie(AA), ţara filistenilor; vor stăpâni şi ţinutul lui Efraim şi al Samariei, şi Beniamin va stăpâni Galaadul. 20 Dar prinşii de război ai acestei oştiri a copiilor lui Israel vor stăpâni ţara canaaniţilor până la(AB) Sarepta şi prinşii de război ai Ierusalimului, care sunt la Sefarad, vor stăpâni(AC) cetăţile de miazăzi. 21 Izbăvitorii(AD) se vor sui pe muntele Sionului ca să judece muntele lui Esau. Dar împărăţia(AE) va fi a Domnului.”

God’s Judgment on Edom
1 The vision of Obadiah. Thus says my Lord Yahweh concerning Edom:
Edom’s Approaching Destruction
We have heard a report from Yahweh, and a messenger has been sent among the nations: “Rise up and let us rise against it[a] for battle.” 2 “Look, I will[b] make you insignificant among the nations. You will be utterly despised! 3 The pride of your heart has deceived you, you who live in the clefts of a rock, the heights of its dwelling, you who say in your heart: ‘Who can bring me down to the ground?’ 4 Even if you soar like the eagle, even if your nest is set among the stars, from there I will bring you down!” declares[c] Yahweh: 5 “If thieves came to you, if plunderers of the night—How you have been destroyed!—would they not steal what they wanted?[d] If grape gatherers came, would they not leave gleanings? 6 How Esau has been pillaged; his treasures have been ransacked! 7 All of your allies[e] have driven you up to the boundary; your confederates[f] have deceived you and have prevailed against you. Those who eat your bread have set an ambush for you, there is no[g] understanding of it.[h] 8 On that day,” declares[i] Yahweh, “will I not destroy the wise men from Edom, and understanding from the mountain of Esau? 9 And your warriors will be shattered, O Teman, so that everyone[j] from the mountain of Esau will be cut off because of the slaughter!
Edom’s Treachery against Judah
10 “Because of the violence done to your brother Jacob, shame will cover you and you will be cut off forever. 11 On the day you stood nearby,[k] on the day strangers took[l] his wealth, and foreigners entered his gates and cast lots over Jerusalem, you were also like one of them. 12 But you should not have gloated[m] over your brother’s day, on the day of his misfortune, and you should not have rejoiced over the people[n] of Judah on the day of their perishing, and you should not have opened your mouth wide on the day of distress. 13 You should not have entered the gate of my people on the day of their disaster. You also should not have gloated over his misery on the day of his disaster, and you should not have stretched out your hands on the day of his disaster. 14 And you should not have stood at the crossroads to cut off his fugitives and you should not have handed over his survivors on the day of distress.
Future Judgment of the Nations
15 “For the day of Yahweh is near against all the nations! Just as you have done, it will be done to you. Your deeds will return on your own head. 16 For just as you have drunk on my holy mountain,[o] all the nations will drink continually. They will drink and they will slurp, and they will be as if they had never been. 17 But on Mount Zion there will be an escape, and it will be holy, and the house of Jacob will take possession of their dispossessors. 18 And the house of Jacob will be a fire and the house of Joseph a flame, and the house of Esau stubble; and they will set them on fire and will consume them. And there will not be a survivor for the house of Esau,” for Yahweh has spoken.
Future Blessing for Israel
19 Those of the Negev will take possession of the mountain of Esau, and those of the Shephelah will possess the land of the Philistines, and they shall take possession of the territory of Ephraim and the territory of Samaria, and Benjamin will take possession of Gilead. 20 And the exiles[p] of this army of the people of Israel will possess Canaan up to Zarephath, and the exiles[q] of Jerusalem who are in Sepharad will take possession of the cities of the Negev. 21 And those who have been saved will go up on Mount Zion to rule the mountain of Esau. And the kingdom will belong to[r] Yahweh.

1 The vision(C) of Obadiah.
This is what the Sovereign Lord says about Edom(D)—
We have heard a message from the Lord:
An envoy(E) was sent to the nations to say,
“Rise, let us go against her for battle”(F)—
2 “See, I will make you small(G) among the nations;
you will be utterly despised.
3 The pride(H) of your heart has deceived you,
you who live in the clefts of the rocks[a](I)
and make your home on the heights,
you who say to yourself,
‘Who can bring me down to the ground?’(J)
4 Though you soar like the eagle
and make your nest(K) among the stars,
from there I will bring you down,”(L)
declares the Lord.(M)
5 “If thieves came to you,
if robbers in the night—
oh, what a disaster awaits you!—
would they not steal only as much as they wanted?
If grape pickers came to you,
would they not leave a few grapes?(N)
6 But how Esau will be ransacked,
his hidden treasures pillaged!
7 All your allies(O) will force you to the border;
your friends will deceive and overpower you;
those who eat your bread(P) will set a trap for you,[b]
but you will not detect it.
8 “In that day,” declares the Lord,
“will I not destroy(Q) the wise men of Edom,
those of understanding in the mountains of Esau?
9 Your warriors, Teman,(R) will be terrified,
and everyone in Esau’s mountains
will be cut down in the slaughter.
10 Because of the violence(S) against your brother Jacob,(T)
you will be covered with shame;
you will be destroyed forever.(U)
11 On the day you stood aloof
while strangers carried off his wealth
and foreigners entered his gates
and cast lots(V) for Jerusalem,
you were like one of them.(W)
12 You should not gloat(X) over your brother
in the day of his misfortune,(Y)
nor rejoice(Z) over the people of Judah
in the day of their destruction,(AA)
nor boast(AB) so much
in the day of their trouble.(AC)
13 You should not march through the gates of my people
in the day of their disaster,
nor gloat over them in their calamity(AD)
in the day of their disaster,
nor seize their wealth
in the day of their disaster.
14 You should not wait at the crossroads
to cut down their fugitives,(AE)
nor hand over their survivors
in the day of their trouble.
15 “The day of the Lord is near(AF)
for all nations.
As you have done, it will be done to you;
your deeds(AG) will return upon your own head.
16 Just as you drank(AH) on my holy hill,(AI)
so all the nations will drink(AJ) continually;
they will drink and drink
and be as if they had never been.(AK)
17 But on Mount Zion will be deliverance;(AL)
it will be holy,(AM)
and Jacob will possess his inheritance.(AN)
18 Jacob will be a fire
and Joseph a flame;
Esau will be stubble,
and they will set him on fire(AO) and destroy(AP) him.
There will be no survivors(AQ)
from Esau.”
The Lord has spoken.
19 People from the Negev will occupy
the mountains of Esau,
and people from the foothills will possess
the land of the Philistines.(AR)
They will occupy the fields of Ephraim and Samaria,(AS)
and Benjamin(AT) will possess Gilead.
20 This company of Israelite exiles who are in Canaan
will possess the land as far as Zarephath;(AU)
the exiles from Jerusalem who are in Sepharad
will possess the towns of the Negev.(AV)
21 Deliverers(AW) will go up on[c] Mount Zion
to govern the mountains of Esau.
And the kingdom will be the Lord’s.(AX)
