⁸ On that day, says the Lord,
    I will destroy the wise out of Edom
    and understanding out of Mount Esau.^(A)

¹⁴ so I will again do
    amazing things with this people,
    shocking and amazing.
The wisdom of their wise shall perish,
    and the discernment of the discerning shall be hidden.^(A)

¹² He frustrates the devices of the crafty,
    so that their hands achieve no success.^(A)
13 He takes the wise in their own craftiness,
    and the schemes of the wily are brought to a quick end.
¹⁴ They meet with darkness in the daytime
    and grope at noonday as in the night.^(B)

¹³ The princes of Zoan have become fools,
    and the princes of Memphis are deluded;
those who are the cornerstones of its tribes
    have led Egypt astray.^(A)
14 The Lord has poured into them^[a]
    a spirit of confusion;
and they have made Egypt stagger in all its doings
    as a drunkard staggers around in his vomit.^(B)

³ the spirit of the Egyptians within them will be emptied out,
    and I will confound their plans;
they will consult the idols and the spirits of the dead
    and the ghosts and the familiar spirits;^(A)
