(A)Il Signore disse ancora a *Mosè e ad *Aaronne: «Fate il conto dei figli di Cheat, tra i figli di *Levi, secondo le loro famiglie, secondo la discendenza paterna, dall'età di trent'anni in su fino all'età di cinquant'anni, di tutti quelli che possono assumere un incarico per servire nella *tenda di convegno.

Questo è il servizio che i figli di Cheat dovranno fare nella tenda di convegno, e che concerne le cose santissime. Quando il campo si moverà, Aaronne e i suoi figli verranno a smontare la *cortina di separazione e copriranno con essa l'*arca della testimonianza; poi porranno sull'arca una coperta di pelli di delfino, vi stenderanno sopra un panno di stoffa violacea e metteranno a posto le stanghe. Poi stenderanno un panno violaceo sulla tavola della presentazione e sopra vi metteranno i piatti, le coppe, le bacinelle, i calici per le *libazioni; il *pane starà sempre sulla tavola; su queste cose stenderanno un panno scarlatto e sopra questo una coperta di pelli di delfino e metteranno le stanghe alla tavola. Poi prenderanno un panno violaceo, con il quale copriranno il *candelabro, le sue lampade, le sue forbici, i suoi smoccolatoi e tutti i suoi vasi dell'olio destinati al servizio del candelabro; 10 metteranno il candelabro con tutti i suoi utensili in una coperta di pelli di delfino e lo porranno sopra un paio di stanghe. 11 Poi stenderanno sull'altare d'oro un panno violaceo, e sopra questo una coperta di pelli di delfino e metteranno le stanghe all'altare. 12 Prenderanno tutti gli utensili di cui si fa uso per il servizio nel *santuario, li metteranno in un panno violaceo, li avvolgeranno in una coperta di pelli di delfino e li porranno sopra un paio di stanghe. 13 Poi toglieranno le ceneri dall'altare e stenderanno sull'altare un panno scarlatto; 14 vi metteranno sopra tutti gli utensili destinati al suo servizio, i bracieri, i forchettoni, le palette, le bacinelle, tutti gli utensili dell'altare e vi stenderanno sopra una coperta di pelli di delfino; poi porranno le stanghe all'altare. 15 Dopo che Aaronne e i suoi figli avranno finito di coprire le cose sacre e tutti gli arredi del santuario, quando il campo si moverà, i figli di Cheat verranno per portare quelle cose; ma non toccheranno le cose sante, per non rischiare di morire. Queste sono le incombenze dei figli di Cheat nella tenda di convegno.

16 Ed *Eleazar, figlio del *sacerdote Aaronne, avrà l'incarico dell'olio per il candelabro, dell'incenso aromatico, dell'oblazione quotidiana e dell'olio dell'unzione, e l'incarico di tutto il *tabernacolo, di tutto ciò che contiene, del santuario e dei suoi arredi».

17 Poi il Signore parlò a Mosè e ad Aaronne, e disse: 18 «Badate che la tribú delle famiglie dei Cheatiti non venga sterminata fra i Leviti; 19 ma fate questo per loro, affinché vivano e non muoiano quando si accosteranno al luogo santissimo: Aaronne e i suoi figli vengano e assegnino a ciascuno di loro il suo servizio e il suo incarico. 20 E i Cheatiti non entrino a guardare nemmeno per un istante le cose sacre, affinché non muoiano».

21 (B)Il Signore disse ancora a Mosè: 22 «Fa' il conto anche dei figli di Gherson, secondo le loro famiglie, secondo la discendenza paterna. 23 Farai il censimento, dall'età di trent'anni in su fino all'età di cinquant'anni, di tutti quelli che possono assumere un incarico per servire nella tenda di convegno.

Farete l'inventario nominativo degli oggetti affidati alle loro cure e che essi dovranno portare. 33 Tale è il servizio delle famiglie dei figli di Merari, tutto il loro servizio nella tenda di convegno, sotto gli ordini di Itamar, figlio del sacerdote Aaronne».

34 Mosè, Aaronne e i capi della comunità fecero dunque il censimento dei figli dei Cheatiti secondo le loro famiglie, secondo la discendenza paterna, 35 di tutti quelli che dall'età di trent'anni in su fino all'età di cinquant'anni potevano assumere un incarico per servire nella tenda di convegno. 36 Quelli di cui si fece il censimento, secondo le loro famiglie, furono duemilasettecentocinquanta. 37 Questi sono gli uomini delle famiglie dei Cheatiti dei quali si fece il censimento: tutti quelli che esercitavano un qualche servizio nella tenda di convegno; Mosè e Aaronne ne fecero il censimento secondo l'ordine che il Signore aveva dato per mezzo di Mosè.

42 Quelli delle famiglie dei figli di Merari dei quali si fece il censimento secondo le loro famiglie, secondo la discendenza paterna, 43 dall'età di trent'anni in su fino all'età di cinquant'anni, tutti quelli che potevano assumere un incarico per servire nella tenda di convegno, 44 quelli di cui si fece il censimento secondo le loro famiglie, furono tremiladuecento. 45 Questi sono gli uomini delle famiglie dei figli di Merari, di cui si fece il censimento. Duties of the Kohathites, Gershonites, and Merarites

The Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying, “Take a census of the sons of Kohath from among the sons of Levi, by their clans and their fathers' houses, (A)from thirty years old up to fifty years old, all who can come on duty, to do the work in the tent of meeting. This is the service of the sons of Kohath in the tent of meeting: (B)the most holy things. When the camp is to set out, Aaron and his sons shall go in and take down (C)the veil of the screen and cover (D)the ark of the testimony with it. Then they shall put on it a covering of goatskin[a] and spread on top of that a cloth all of blue, and shall put in its (E)poles. And over the (F)table of the bread of the Presence they shall spread a cloth of blue and put on it the plates, the dishes for incense, the bowls, and the flagons for the drink offering; (G)the regular showbread also shall be on it. Then they shall spread over them a cloth of scarlet and cover the same with a covering of goatskin, and shall (H)put in its poles. And they shall take a cloth of blue and cover (I)the lampstand for the light, with its lamps, its tongs, its trays, and all the vessels for oil with which it is supplied. 10 And they shall put it with all its utensils in a covering of goatskin and put it on the carrying frame. 11 And over (J)the golden altar they shall spread a cloth of blue and cover it with a covering of goatskin, and shall put in its poles. 12 And they shall take all (K)the vessels of the service that are used in the sanctuary and put them in a cloth of blue and cover them with a covering of goatskin and put them on the carrying frame. 13 And they shall take away the ashes from the altar and spread a purple cloth over it. 14 And they shall put on it all the utensils of the altar, which are used for the service there, the fire pans, the forks, the shovels, and the basins, all the utensils of the altar; and they shall spread on it a covering of goatskin, and shall put in its poles. 15 And when Aaron and his sons have finished covering the sanctuary and all the furnishings of the sanctuary, as the camp sets out, after that (L)the sons of Kohath shall come to carry these, (M)but they must not touch the holy things, lest they die. These are the things of the tent of meeting that the sons of Kohath are to carry.

16 “And Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest shall have charge of (N)the oil for the light, the (O)fragrant incense, (P)the regular grain offering, and (Q)the anointing oil, with the oversight of the whole tabernacle and all that is in it, of the sanctuary and its vessels.”

17 The Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying, 18 “Let not the tribe of the clans of the Kohathites be destroyed from among the Levites, 19 but deal thus with them, that they may live and not die when they come near to (R)the most holy things: Aaron and his sons shall go in and appoint them each to his task and to his burden, 20 (S)but they shall not go in to look on the holy things even for a moment, lest they die.”

21 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 22 “Take a census of the sons of Gershon also, by their fathers' houses and by their clans. 23 (T)From thirty years old up to fifty years old, you shall list them, all who can (U)come to do duty, to do service in the tent of meeting. 24 This is the service of the clans of the Gershonites, in serving and bearing burdens: 25 (V)they shall carry (W)the curtains of the tabernacle and the tent of meeting with (X)its covering and the covering of goatskin that is on top of it and the screen for the entrance of the tent of meeting 26 and the hangings of the court and the screen for the entrance of the gate of the court that is around the tabernacle and the altar, and their cords and all the equipment for their service. And they shall do all that needs to be done with regard to them. 27 All the service of the sons of the Gershonites shall be at the command of Aaron and his sons, in all that they are to carry and in all that they have to do. And you shall assign to their charge all that they are to carry. 28 This is the service of the clans of the sons of the Gershonites in the tent of meeting, and their guard duty is to be (Y)under the direction of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.

29 “As for the sons of Merari, you shall list them by their clans and their fathers' houses. 30 (Z)From thirty years old up to fifty years old, you shall list them, everyone who can come on duty, to do the service of the tent of meeting. 31 And (AA)this is what they are charged to carry, as the whole of their service in the tent of meeting: the frames of the tabernacle, with its bars, pillars, and bases, 32 and the pillars around the court with their bases, pegs, and cords, with all their equipment and all their accessories. And you shall (AB)list by name the objects that they are required to carry. 33 This is the service of the clans of the sons of Merari, the whole of their service in the tent of meeting, (AC)under the direction of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.”

34 And Moses and Aaron and the chiefs of the congregation listed the sons of the Kohathites, by their clans and their fathers' houses, 35 (AD)from thirty years old up to fifty years old, everyone who could come on duty, for service in the tent of meeting; 36 and those listed by clans were 2,750. 37 (AE)This was the list of the clans of the Kohathites, all who served in the tent of meeting, whom Moses and Aaron listed according to the commandment of the Lord by Moses.

38 Those listed of the sons of Gershon, by their clans and their fathers' houses, 39 (AF)from thirty years old up to fifty years old, everyone who could come on duty for service in the tent of meeting— 40 those listed by their clans and their fathers' houses were 2,630. 41 (AG)This was the list of the clans of the sons of Gershon, all who served in the tent of meeting, whom Moses and Aaron listed according to the commandment of the Lord.

42 Those listed of the clans of the sons of Merari, by their clans and their fathers' houses, 43 (AH)from thirty years old up to fifty years old, everyone who could come on duty, for service in the tent of meeting— 44 those listed by clans were 3,200. 45 (AI)This was the list of the clans of the sons of Merari, whom Moses and Aaron listed according to the commandment of the Lord by Moses.

46 All those who were listed of the Levites, whom Moses and Aaron and the chiefs of Israel listed, by their clans and their fathers' houses, 47 (AJ)from thirty years old up to fifty years old, everyone who could come to do the service of ministry and the service of bearing burdens in the tent of meeting, 48 those listed were 8,580. 49 According to the commandment of the Lord through Moses they were listed, (AK)each one with his task of serving or carrying. Thus they were listed by him, (AL)as the Lord commanded Moses.

Duties of the Sons of Kohath

Then the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying: “Take a census of the sons of (A)Kohath from among the children of Levi, by their families, by their fathers’ house, (B)from thirty years old and above, even to fifty years old, all who enter the service to do the work in the tabernacle of meeting.

(C)“This is the service of the sons of Kohath in the tabernacle of meeting, relating to (D)the most holy things: When the camp prepares to journey, Aaron and his sons shall come, and they shall take down (E)the covering veil and cover the (F)ark of the Testimony with it. Then they shall put on it a covering of badger skins, and spread over that a cloth entirely of (G)blue; and they shall insert (H)its poles.

“On the (I)table of showbread they shall spread a blue cloth, and put on it the dishes, the pans, the bowls, and the [a]pitchers for pouring; and the (J)showbread[b] shall be on it. They shall spread over them a scarlet cloth, and cover the same with a covering of badger skins; and they shall insert its poles. And they shall take a blue cloth and cover the (K)lampstand of the light, (L)with its lamps, its wick-trimmers, its trays, and all its oil vessels, with which they service it. 10 Then they shall put it with all its utensils in a covering of badger skins, and put it on a carrying beam.

11 “Over (M)the golden altar they shall spread a blue cloth, and cover it with a covering of badger skins; and they shall insert its poles. 12 Then they shall take all the (N)utensils of service with which they minister in the sanctuary, put them in a blue cloth, cover them with a covering of badger skins, and put them on a carrying beam. 13 Also they shall take away the ashes from the altar, and spread a purple cloth over it. 14 They shall put on it all its implements with which they minister there—the firepans, the forks, the shovels, the [c]basins, and all the utensils of the altar—and they shall spread on it a covering of badger skins, and insert its poles. 15 And when Aaron and his sons have finished covering the sanctuary and all the furnishings of the sanctuary, when the camp is set to go, then (O)the sons of Kohath shall come to carry them; (P)but they shall not touch any holy thing, lest they die.

(Q)These are the things in the tabernacle of meeting which the sons of Kohath are to carry.

16 “The appointed duty of Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest is (R)the oil for the light, the (S)sweet incense, (T)the daily grain offering, the (U)anointing oil, the oversight of all the tabernacle, of all that is in it, with the sanctuary and its furnishings.”

17 Then the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying: 18 “Do not cut off the tribe of the families of the Kohathites from among the Levites; 19 but do this in regard to them, that they may live and not die when they approach (V)the most holy things: Aaron and his sons shall go in and [d]appoint each of them to his service and his task. 20 (W)But they shall not go in to watch while the holy things are being covered, lest they die.”

Duties of the Sons of Gershon

21 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 22 “Also take a census of the sons of (X)Gershon, by their fathers’ house, by their families. 23 (Y)From thirty years old and above, even to fifty years old, you shall number them, all who enter to perform the service, to do the work in the tabernacle of meeting. 24 This is the (Z)service of the families of the Gershonites, in serving and carrying: 25 (AA)They shall carry the (AB)curtains of the tabernacle and the tabernacle of meeting with its covering, the covering of (AC)badger skins that is on it, the screen for the door of the tabernacle of meeting, 26 the screen for the door of the gate of the court, the hangings of the court which are around the tabernacle and altar, and their cords, all the furnishings for their service and all that is made for these things: so shall they serve.

27 “Aaron and his sons shall [e]assign all the service of the sons of the Gershonites, all their tasks and all their service. And you shall [f]appoint to them all their tasks as their duty. 28 This is the service of the families of the sons of Gershon in the tabernacle of meeting. And their duties shall be (AD)under the [g]authority of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.

Duties of the Sons of Merari

29 As for the sons of (AE)Merari, you shall number them by their families and by their fathers’ house. 30 (AF)From thirty years old and above, even to fifty years old, you shall number them, everyone who enters the service to do the work of the tabernacle of meeting. 31 And (AG)this is (AH)what they must carry as all their service for the tabernacle of meeting: (AI)the boards of the tabernacle, its bars, its pillars, its sockets, 32 and the pillars around the court with their sockets, pegs, and cords, with all their furnishings and all their service; and you shall (AJ)assign to each man by name the items he must carry. 33 This is the service of the families of the sons of Merari, as all their service for the tabernacle of meeting, under the [h]authority of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.”

Census of the Levites

34 (AK)And Moses, Aaron, and the leaders of the congregation numbered the sons of the Kohathites by their families and by their fathers’ house, 35 from thirty (AL)years old and above, even to fifty years old, everyone who entered the service for work in the tabernacle of meeting; 36 and those who were numbered by their families were two thousand seven hundred and fifty. 37 These were the ones who were numbered of the families of the Kohathites, all who might serve in the tabernacle of meeting, whom Moses and Aaron numbered according to the commandment of the Lord by the hand of Moses.

38 And those who were numbered of the sons of Gershon, by their families and by their fathers’ house, 39 from thirty years old and above, even to fifty years old, everyone who entered the service for work in the tabernacle of meeting— 40 those who were numbered by their families, by their fathers’ house, were two thousand six hundred and thirty. 41 (AM)These are the ones who were numbered of the families of the sons of Gershon, of all who might serve in the tabernacle of meeting, whom Moses and Aaron numbered according to the commandment of the Lord.

42 Those of the families of the sons of Merari who were numbered, by their families, by their fathers’ [i]house, 43 from thirty years old and above, even to fifty years old, everyone who entered the service for work in the tabernacle of meeting— 44 those who were numbered by their families were three thousand two hundred. 45 These are the ones who were numbered of the families of the sons of Merari, whom Moses and Aaron numbered (AN)according to the word of the Lord by the hand of Moses.

46 All who were (AO)numbered of the Levites, whom Moses, Aaron, and the leaders of Israel numbered, by their families and by their fathers’ houses, 47 (AP)from thirty years old and above, even to fifty years old, everyone who came to do the work of service and the work of bearing burdens in the tabernacle of meeting— 48 those who were numbered were eight thousand five hundred and eighty.

49 According to the commandment of the Lord they were numbered by the hand of Moses, (AQ)each according to his service and according to his task; thus were they numbered by him, (AR)as the Lord commanded Moses.
