Bileam zegent Israël voor de derde keer
24 Bileam begreep dat God het volk Israël wilde zegenen. Daarom deed hij niet, zoals de eerste en de tweede keer, zijn bezweringen om aan de te Heer vragen wat hij moest zeggen. 2 Hij keek naar de woestijn en zag het tentenkamp van het volk Israël. Het tentenkamp was opgezet in groepen volgens de stammen waar iedereen bij hoorde. Toen kwam Gods Geest over hem. 3 Hij zei:
"Dit zegt Bileam,
de man met het open oog.
4 Dit zegt de man die hoort wat God zegt,
die in zijn geest dingen ziet die de Almachtige God hem laat zien.
5 Wat zijn jullie tenten gezegend, volk van Jakob,
en de plaatsen waar jullie wonen ook, volk van Israël!
6 Jullie dorpen en steden zullen de dalen vullen.
Ze zullen zo mooi zijn als tuinen langs een rivier.
De Heer heeft ze geplant,
zoals sandelbomen en cederbomen die langs het water staan.
7 Er zal altijd water uit jullie emmers stromen,
er zal altijd overvloedig zaad zijn.
Jullie koning zal machtiger zijn dan Agag, de koning van Amalek.
Geen koninkrijk zal machtiger zijn.
8 God, die hen uit Egypte bevrijdde, zal hen verdedigen als een buffel met sterke horens.
Hij zal vijandelijke volken vernietigen,
hun botten breken,
hen met zijn pijlen doorboren.
9 Hij ligt op de loer als een leeuw, als een machtige leeuw.
Wie durft Hem uit te dagen?
Gezegend zijn de mensen die Israël zegenen.
En vervloekt zijn de mensen die Israël vervloeken."
Bileams vervloeking over de andere volken
10 Toen werd Balak woedend op Bileam. Hij schudde zijn vuisten naar Bileam en zei: "Ik heb je geroepen om mijn vijanden te vervloeken! En kijk eens, nu heb je hen drie keer achter elkaar gezegend! 11 Maak dat je wegkomt en ga naar huis! Ik had gezegd dat ik je rijk zou belonen, maar de Heer heeft ervoor gezorgd dat je geen beloning krijgt!" 12 Maar Bileam zei tegen Balak: "Ik had toch gezegd tegen de boodschappers die mij kwamen halen: 13 'Al gaf Balak mij zijn huis vol goud of zilver, ik kan niet ongehoorzaam zijn aan het bevel van de Heer, door uit mijzelf iets goeds of iets slechts over het volk te zeggen. Wat de Heer zal spreken, dát zal ik zeggen.' 14 Voordat ik naar mijn eigen volk terug ga, zal ik u zeggen wat dit volk uiteindelijk met uw land zal doen." 15+16 Hij zei:
"Dit zegt Bileam.
Dit zegt de man die hoort wat God zegt
en die de plannen van de Allerhoogste God kent.
Hij ziet in zijn geest dingen die de Allerhoogste God hem laat zien.
17 Ik zie iemand staan. Niet nu, maar in de toekomst.
Hij komt op in Israël, zoals een ster opkomt aan de hemel.
Hij is koning over Israël.
Hij vernietigt Moab, het volk dat afstamt van Set.
18 Hij zal zijn vijanden verslaan: hij zal Edom en Seïr veroveren.
Israël zal sterk zijn en heersen.
19 Iemand uit Israël zal heersen.
Hij zal de vluchtelingen uit Ar doden."
20 Toen zag hij in zijn geest Amalek en zei:
"Amalek is het machtigste van alle volken,
maar uiteindelijk zal het vernietigd worden."
21 Toen zag hij in zijn geest de Kenieten en zei:
"Jullie wonen op een veilige plaats, volk van Kaïn.
Veilig als in een nest dat hoog op een rots is gebouwd.
22 Toch zullen jullie worden vernietigd.
Assur zal jullie gevangen meenemen."
23 Verder zei hij:
"Vreselijk! Wie zal in leven blijven wanneer God deze dingen doet?
24 Er komen schepen van de kust van de Kittieten.[a]
Ze zullen Assur en Heber aanvallen.
Maar ook de Kittieten zullen tenslotte worden vernietigd."
25 Toen ging Bileam naar zijn land terug. Ook Balak ging weer naar huis.

24 Now when Balaam saw that it pleased the Lord to bless Israel,(A) he did not resort to divination(B) as at other times, but turned his face toward the wilderness.(C) 2 When Balaam looked out and saw Israel encamped tribe by tribe, the Spirit of God came on him(D) 3 and he spoke his message:
“The prophecy of Balaam son of Beor,
the prophecy of one whose eye sees clearly,(E)
4 the prophecy of one who hears the words of God,(F)
who sees a vision from the Almighty,[a](G)
who falls prostrate, and whose eyes are opened:
5 “How beautiful are your tents,(H) Jacob,
your dwelling places, Israel!
6 “Like valleys they spread out,
like gardens beside a river,(I)
like aloes(J) planted by the Lord,
like cedars beside the waters.(K)
7 Water will flow from their buckets;
their seed will have abundant water.
8 “God brought them out of Egypt;
they have the strength of a wild ox.
They devour hostile nations
and break their bones in pieces;(N)
with their arrows they pierce them.(O)
9 Like a lion they crouch and lie down,
like a lioness(P)—who dares to rouse them?
10 Then Balak’s anger burned(S) against Balaam. He struck his hands together(T) and said to him, “I summoned you to curse my enemies,(U) but you have blessed them(V) these three times.(W) 11 Now leave at once and go home!(X) I said I would reward you handsomely,(Y) but the Lord has kept you from being rewarded.”
12 Balaam answered Balak, “Did I not tell the messengers you sent me,(Z) 13 ‘Even if Balak gave me all the silver and gold in his palace, I could not do anything of my own accord, good or bad, to go beyond the command of the Lord(AA)—and I must say only what the Lord says’?(AB) 14 Now I am going back to my people, but come, let me warn you of what this people will do to your people in days to come.”(AC)
Balaam’s Fourth Message
15 Then he spoke his message:
“The prophecy of Balaam son of Beor,
the prophecy of one whose eye sees clearly,
16 the prophecy of one who hears the words(AD) of God,
who has knowledge from the Most High,(AE)
who sees a vision from the Almighty,
who falls prostrate, and whose eyes are opened:
17 “I see him, but not now;
I behold him, but not near.(AF)
A star will come out of Jacob;(AG)
a scepter will rise out of Israel.(AH)
He will crush the foreheads of Moab,(AI)
the skulls[b](AJ) of[c] all the people of Sheth.[d]
18 Edom(AK) will be conquered;
Seir,(AL) his enemy, will be conquered,(AM)
but Israel(AN) will grow strong.
19 A ruler will come out of Jacob(AO)
and destroy the survivors of the city.”
Balaam’s Fifth Message
20 Then Balaam saw Amalek(AP) and spoke his message:
“Amalek was first among the nations,
but their end will be utter destruction.”(AQ)
Balaam’s Sixth Message
21 Then he saw the Kenites(AR) and spoke his message:
“Your dwelling place is secure,(AS)
your nest is set in a rock;
22 yet you Kenites will be destroyed
when Ashur(AT) takes you captive.”
Balaam’s Seventh Message
23 Then he spoke his message:
“Alas! Who can live when God does this?[e]
24 Ships will come from the shores of Cyprus;(AU)
they will subdue Ashur(AV) and Eber,(AW)
but they too will come to ruin.(AX)”
25 Then Balaam(AY) got up and returned home, and Balak went his own way.

巴蘭第三次預言
24 巴蘭見耶和華樂意賜福給以色列人，就不再像先前兩次那樣去求兆頭，而是面向曠野， 2 舉目四望，看見以色列人按支派紮營。上帝的靈降在他身上， 3 他便吟詩預言說：
「比珥之子巴蘭的預言，
是眼睛明亮者的話，
4 他得聽上帝之言，
俯伏在地，
得見全能者的異象。
5 雅各啊，
你的帳篷何等華美！
以色列啊，
你的居所何等佳美！
6 像連綿的山谷，
河畔的園子；
又如耶和華栽種的沉香，
水邊的香柏樹。
7 他們沐浴充沛的甘霖，
撒種於濕潤的沃土。
他們的君王高過亞甲，
國度名震四方。
8 上帝把他們帶出埃及，
祂[a]的力量如野牛之角。
他們要吞滅敵國，
打碎敵人的骨頭，
用利箭射穿仇敵。
9 他們蹲伏如雄獅，
躺臥如母獅，誰敢招惹？
祝福他們的人有福了！
咒詛他們的人有禍了！」
10 巴勒聽了大怒，用力擊掌，對巴蘭說：「我請你來咒詛我的仇敵，你竟三次祝福他們。 11 現在快回家去吧！我說過要給你重賞，但耶和華不讓你得到。」 12 巴蘭說：「我不是對你派來的使臣說過嗎？ 13 就是你把滿屋的金銀都給我，我也不能違背耶和華的命令、憑自己的意思行事——無論好事壞事。我只能說耶和華讓我說的話。 14 現在我要回本族去了。但我要告訴你日後以色列人會怎樣對待你的人民。」
巴蘭第四次預言
15 巴蘭吟詩預言說：
「比珥之子巴蘭的預言，
是眼睛明亮者的話，
16 他得聽上帝之言，
明白至高者的旨意，
俯伏在地，
得見全能者的異象。
17 我所見的尚未發生，
我目睹的關乎將來。
一顆星要從雅各家升起，
一位君王要從以色列興起。
他要打爛摩押的前額，
擊碎舍特人的頭顱。
18 他必征服以東，
佔領敵疆西珥，
以色列必勇往直前。
19 雅各的後裔必掌權，
消滅城中的餘民。」
巴蘭最後的預言
20 巴蘭觀看亞瑪力人，並以詩歌預言說：
「亞瑪力原是列國之首，
但他的結局卻是滅亡。」
21 巴蘭又觀看基尼人，並以詩歌預言說：
「雖然你的居所堅固，
你的巢築在峭壁，
22 但你必遭滅頂，
被亞述擄去。」
23 巴蘭又以詩歌預言說：
「唉！若非上帝許可，
誰能存活呢？
24 船隻從基提駛來，
征服亞述和希伯，
但他也要滅亡。」
25 說完，巴蘭動身返回家鄉，巴勒也回去了。

24 When Bil‘am saw that it pleased Adonai to bless Isra’el, he didn’t go, as at the other times, to make use of divination, but looked out toward the desert. 2 Bil‘am raised his eyes and saw Isra’el encamped tribe by tribe. Then the Spirit of God came upon him, 3 and he made his pronouncement:
“This is the speech of Bil‘am, son of B‘or;
the speech of the man whose eyes have been opened;
4 the speech of him who hears God’s words;
who sees what Shaddai sees,
who has fallen, yet has open eyes:
5 “How lovely are your tents, Ya‘akov;
your encampments, Isra’el!
6 They spread out like valleys,
like gardens by the riverside,
like succulent aloes planted by Adonai,
like cedar trees next to the water.
7 “Water will flow from their branches,
their seed will have water aplenty.
Their king will be higher than Agag
and his kingdom lifted high.
8 God, who brought them out of Egypt,
gives them the strength of a wild ox.
They will devour the nations opposing them,
break their bones, pierce them with their arrows.
9 “When they lie down they crouch like a lion,
or like a lioness — who dares to rouse it?
Blessed be all who bless you!
Cursed be all who curse you!”
10 Balak blazed with fury against Bil‘am. He struck his hands together and said to Bil‘am, “I summoned you to curse my enemies. But here, you have done nothing but bless them — three times already! 11 Now you had better escape to your own place! I had planned to reward you very well, but now Adonai has deprived you of payment.”
12 Bil‘am answered Balak, “Didn’t I tell the messengers you sent me 13 that even if Balak would give me his palace full of silver and gold, I could not of my own accord go beyond the word of Adonai to do either good or bad? that what Adonai said is what I would say? (LY: vii) 14 But now that I am going back to my own people, come, I will warn you what this people will do to your people in the acharit-hayamim. 15 So he made his pronouncement:
“This is the speech of Bil‘am, son of B‘or;
the speech of the man whose eyes have been opened;
16 the speech of him who hears God’s words;
who knows what ‘Elyon knows,
who sees what Shaddai sees,
who has fallen, yet has open eyes:
17 “I see him, but not now;
I behold him, but not soon —
a star will step forth from Ya‘akov,
a scepter will arise from Isra’el,
to crush the corners of Mo’av
and destroy all descendants of Shet.
18 His enemies will be his possessions —
Edom and Se‘ir, possessions.
Isra’el will do valiantly,
19 From Ya‘akov will come someone who will rule,
and he will destroy what is left of the city.”
20 He saw ‘Amalek and made this pronouncement:
“First among nations was ‘Amalek,
but destruction will be its end.”
21 He saw the Keini and made this pronouncement:
“Though your dwelling is firm,
your nest set on rock,
22 Kayin will be wasted
while captive to Ashur.”
23 Finally, he made this pronouncement:
“Oh no! Who can live when God does this?
24 But ships will come from the coast of Kittim
to subdue Ashur and subdue ‘Ever,
but they too will come to destruction.”
25 Then Bil‘am got up, left and returned to his home; and Balak too went his way.
