Bileam zegent Israël voor de eerste keer
23 Bileam zei tegen Balak: "Bouw hier zeven altaren voor mij. Offer daarop zeven stieren en zeven mannetjes-schapen." 2 Balak deed wat Bileam had gevraagd en offerde met Bileam op elk altaar een stier en een mannetjes-schaap. 3 Toen zei Bileam tegen Balak: "Blijf hier bij het brand-offer staan. Ik ga weg, en misschien zal de Heer naar mij toe komen. Daarna zal ik u vertellen wat Hij tegen mij heeft gezegd." Toen klom hij de heuvel op. 4 God kwam daar naar Bileam toe. Bileam zei tegen Hem: "Ik heb zeven altaren gebouwd en op elk altaar een stier en een mannetjes-schaap geofferd." 5 De Heer zei Bileam wat hij zeggen moest en stuurde hem daarmee terug naar Balak. 6 Toen Bileam terugkwam, stond Balak nog steeds bij zijn offer, met de leiders van Moab. 7 Bileam zei:
"Balak, de koning van Moab, haalde mij uit Aram, uit de bergen in het oosten.
Hij zei: 'Kom en vervloek het volk van Jakob voor mij. Verwens het volk Israël.'
8 Maar hoe kan ik een volk vervloeken dat niet door God vervloekt is?
Hoe kan ik een volk verwensen dat niet door de Heer verwenst is?
9 Vanaf de top van deze rotsen zie ik hen.
Ik zie hen vanaf de heuvels.
Het is een bijzonder volk, anders dan de andere volken.
10 Wie kan de familie van Jakob tellen?
Ze zijn zo ontelbaar als stof!
Wie kan tellen hoe groot ook maar een kwart van het volk Israël is?
Ik wilde wel dat ik zou sterven als één van hen,
als één van hen die bij God horen!"
11 Toen zei Balak tegen Bileam: "Wat doe je me nu? Ik heb je laten komen om mijn vijanden te vervloeken, en nu heb je hen gezegend!" 12 Maar hij antwoordde hem: "Ik mag alleen dát zeggen wat de Heer mij beveelt."

13 Toen zei Balak tegen hem: "Ga alsjeblieft met mij mee naar een andere plek vanwaar je het volk kan zien. Daar zul je een ander deel van het volk zien. Maar ook daar kun je niet het hele volk zien. Vervloek hen dan voor mij vanaf die andere plaats." 14 Hij nam hem mee naar de Zofim-vlakte, op de helling van de Pisga. Hij bouwde er zeven altaren en offerde op elk altaar een stier en een mannetjes-schaap. 15 Bileam zei tegen Balak: "Blijf hier bij het offer staan. Ik zal verderop God ontmoeten." 16 De Heer kwam naar Bileam toe en zei hem wat hij zeggen moest. Daarmee stuurde Hij hem naar Balak terug. 17 Toen Bileam terugkwam, stond Balak daar nog steeds bij zijn offer, met de leiders van Moab. Balak vroeg hem: "Wat heeft de Heer gezegd?" 18 Bileam zei:
"Sta op Balak, en luister.
Zet je oren open voor wat ik zeg, zoon van Zippor.
19 God is niet zoals de mensen. Mensen liegen, maar God liegt nooit.
Mensen veranderen van gedachten, maar God doet altijd wat Hij zegt.
Hij houdt Zich altijd aan wat Hij heeft beloofd.
20 Hij heeft mij het bevel gegeven om te zegenen.
Hij heeft hen gezegend. Daar kan ik niets aan veranderen.
21 God ziet geen kwaad bij het volk Israël.
Hij vergeeft hun wat ze verkeerd doen.
Hun Heer God is met hen. Ze jubelen over hun Koning.
22 God heeft hen uit Egypte bevrijd.
Hij verdedigt hen als een buffel met sterke horens.
23 Het volk van Jakob kan niet vervloekt worden.
Toverspreuken kunnen het volk Israël niets doen.
Dit is wat God voor hen doet:
24 Hij heeft het volk zo sterk gemaakt als een machtige leeuw,
als een leeuw die niet gaat liggen vóórdat hij zijn prooi heeft verscheurd
en het bloed heeft gedronken van wie hij heeft gedood."
25 Toen zei Balak tegen Bileam: "Als je het volk dan beslist niet wil vervloeken, zegen het dan in ieder geval óók niet!" 26 Maar Bileam antwoordde hem: "Ik heb u toch gezegd dat ik alles zal zeggen wat de Heer wil dat ik zeg?"
27 Toen zei Balak: "Kom met me mee naar een andere plaats. Misschien zal God het goed vinden dat je het volk vanaf die plek vervloekt." 28 Toen nam Balak Bileam mee naar de top van de Peor, vanwaar je uitkijkt over de woestijn. 29 Bileam zei tegen Balak: "Bouw hier zeven altaren en offer hier zeven stieren en zeven mannetjes-schapen." 30 Balak deed wat Bileam had gevraagd en offerde op elk altaar een stier en een mannetjes-schaap.

23 ¶ And Balaam said unto Balak, Build me here seven altars and prepare me here seven oxen and seven rams.
2 And Balak did as Balaam had spoken; and Balak and Balaam offered on every altar a bullock and a ram.
3 And Balaam said unto Balak, Stand by thy burnt offering, and I will go; peradventure the LORD will come to meet me, and whatever he shows me I will tell thee. And thus he went alone.
4 And God met Balaam; and he said unto him, I have prepared seven altars, and I have offered upon each altar a bullock and a ram.
5 And the LORD put a word in Balaam’s mouth and said, Return unto Balak, and thus thou shalt speak.
6 And he returned unto him, and, behold, he stood by his burnt sacrifice, he and all the princes of Moab.
7 And he took up his parable and said, Balak, the king of Moab, has brought me from Aram, out of the mountains of the east, saying, Come, curse me Jacob and come, denounce Israel.
8 Why should I curse one whom God has not cursed? And why should I denounce one whom the LORD has not denounced?
9 For from the top of the rocks I have seen him, and from the hills I beheld him; behold, a people that shall dwell in confidence and shall not be counted among the Gentiles.
10 Who shall count the dust of Jacob and the number of the fourth part of Israel? Let my soul die the death of the righteous, and let my last end be like his!
11 Then Balak said unto Balaam, What hast thou done unto me? I took thee to curse my enemies, and, behold, thou hast blessed them altogether.
12 And he answered and said, Must I not take heed to speak that which the LORD has put in my mouth?
13 ¶ And Balak said unto him, Come, I pray thee, with me unto another place, from which thou may see them; thou hast seen but the utmost part of them and hast not seen them all; and from there thou shalt curse them for me.
14 And he brought him into the field of Zophim to the top of Pisgah and built seven altars and offered a bullock and a ram on every altar.
15 Then he said unto Balak, Stand here by thy burnt offering, while I meet the LORD yonder.
16 And the LORD met Balaam and put a word in his mouth and said unto him, Go again unto Balak and say thus.
17 And he came unto him, and behold, he stood by his burnt offering and the princes of Moab with him. And Balak said unto him, What has the LORD spoken?
18 Then he took up his parable and said, Rise up, Balak, and hear; hearken unto me, thou son of Zippor:
19 God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent; he said and shall he not do it? He spoke and shall he not execute it?
20 Behold, I have received blessing; and he has blessed; and I cannot reverse it.
21 He has not beheld iniquity in Jacob, neither has he seen rebellion in Israel; the LORD his God is with him, and the battle-cry of a king is in him.
22 God brought them out of Egypt; he has, as it were the strength of a unicorn.
23 Because there is no enchantment in Jacob, neither is there any divination in Israel. According to this time, it shall be said of Jacob and of Israel, What God has made!
24 Behold the people, who shall rise up as a great lion and lift up himself as a young lion; he shall not lie down until he eats of the prey and drinks the blood of the slain.
25 Then Balak said unto Balaam, Now that you do not curse them, do not bless them either.
26 Then Balaam said unto Balak, Did I not tell thee that all that the LORD says unto me, that I must do?
27 And Balak said unto Balaam, Come, I pray thee, I will bring thee unto another place; peradventure it will please God that thou may curse them for me from there.
28 And Balak brought Balaam unto the top of Peor, that looks toward Jeshimon.
29 And Balaam said unto Balak, Build me here seven altars and prepare me here seven bullocks and seven rams.
30 And Balak did as Balaam had said and offered a bullock and a ram on every altar.

23 巴 兰 对 巴 勒 说 ： 你 在 这 里 给 我 筑 七 座 坛 ， 为 我 豫 备 七 只 公 牛 ， 七 只 公 羊 。
2 巴 勒 照 巴 兰 的 话 行 了 。 巴 勒 和 巴 兰 在 每 座 坛 上 献 一 只 公 牛 ， 一 只 公 羊 。
3 巴 兰 对 巴 勒 说 ： 你 站 在 你 的 燔 祭 旁 边 ， 我 且 往 前 去 ， 或 者 耶 和 华 来 迎 见 我 。 他 指 示 我 甚 麽 ， 我 必 告 诉 你 。 於 是 巴 兰 上 一 净 光 的 高 处 。
4 神 迎 见 巴 兰 ； 巴 兰 说 ： 我 豫 备 了 七 座 坛 ， 在 每 座 坛 上 献 了 一 只 公 牛 ， 一 只 公 羊 。
5 耶 和 华 将 话 传 给 巴 兰 ， 又 说 ： 你 回 到 巴 勒 那 里 ， 要 如 此 如 此 说 。
6 他 就 回 到 巴 勒 那 里 ， 见 他 同 摩 押 的 使 臣 都 站 在 燔 祭 旁 边 。
7 巴 兰 便 题 起 诗 歌 说 ： 巴 勒 引 我 出 亚 兰 ， 摩 押 王 引 我 出 东 山 ， 说 ： 来 阿 ， 为 我 咒 诅 雅 各 ； 来 阿 ， 怒 骂 以 色 列 。
8 神 没 有 咒 诅 的 ， 我 焉 能 咒 诅 ？ 耶 和 华 没 有 怒 骂 的 ， 我 焉 能 怒 骂 ？
9 我 从 高 峰 看 他 ， 从 小 山 望 他 ； 这 是 独 居 的 民 ， 不 列 在 万 民 中 。
10 谁 能 数 点 雅 各 的 尘 土 ？ 谁 能 计 算 以 色 列 的 四 分 之 一 ？ 我 愿 如 义 人 之 死 而 死 ； 我 愿 如 义 人 之 终 而 终 。
11 巴 勒 对 巴 兰 说 ： 你 向 我 做 的 是 甚 麽 事 呢 ？ 我 领 你 来 咒 诅 我 的 仇 敌 ， 不 料 ， 你 竟 为 他 们 祝 福 。
12 他 回 答 说 ： 耶 和 华 传 给 我 的 话 ， 我 能 不 谨 慎 传 说 麽 ？
13 巴 勒 说 ： 求 你 同 我 往 别 处 去 ， 在 那 里 可 以 看 见 他 们 ； 你 不 能 全 看 见 ， 只 能 看 见 他 们 边 界 上 的 人 。 在 那 里 要 为 我 咒 诅 他 们 。
14 於 是 领 巴 兰 到 了 琐 腓 田 ， 上 了 ? 斯 迦 山 顶 ， 筑 了 七 座 坛 ； 每 座 坛 上 献 一 只 公 牛 ， 一 只 公 羊 。
15 巴 兰 对 巴 勒 说 ： 你 站 在 这 燔 祭 旁 边 ， 等 我 往 那 边 去 迎 见 耶 和 华 。
16 耶 和 华 临 到 巴 兰 那 里 ， 将 话 传 给 他 ； 又 说 ： 你 回 到 巴 勒 那 里 ， 要 如 此 如 此 说 。
17 他 就 回 到 巴 勒 那 里 ， 见 他 站 在 燔 祭 旁 边 ； 摩 押 的 使 臣 也 和 他 在 一 处 。 巴 勒 问 他 说 ： 耶 和 华 说 了 甚 麽 话 呢 ？
18 巴 兰 就 题 诗 歌 说 ： 巴 勒 ， 你 起 来 听 ； 西 拨 的 儿 子 ， 你 听 我 言 。
19 神 非 人 ， 必 不 致 说 谎 ， 也 非 人 子 ， 必 不 致 後 悔 。 他 说 话 岂 不 照 着 行 呢 ？ 他 发 言 岂 不 要 成 就 呢 ？
20 我 奉 命 祝 福 ； 神 也 曾 赐 福 ， 此 事 我 不 能 翻 转 。
21 他 未 见 雅 各 中 有 罪 孽 ， 也 未 见 以 色 列 中 有 奸 恶 。 耶 和 华 ─ 他 的 神 和 他 同 在 ； 有 欢 呼 王 的 声 音 在 他 们 中 间 。
22 神 领 他 们 出 埃 及 ； 他 们 似 乎 有 野 牛 之 力 。
23 断 没 有 法 术 可 以 害 雅 各 ， 也 没 有 占 卜 可 以 害 以 色 列 。 现 在 必 有 人 论 及 雅 各 ， 就 是 论 及 以 色 列 说 ： 神 为 他 行 了 何 等 的 大 事 ！
24 这 民 起 来 ， 彷 佛 母 狮 ， 挺 身 ， 好 像 公 狮 ， 未 曾 吃 野 食 ， 未 曾 喝 被 伤 者 之 血 ， 决 不 躺 卧 。
25 巴 勒 对 巴 兰 说 ： 你 一 点 不 要 咒 诅 他 们 ， 也 不 要 为 他 们 祝 福 。
26 巴 兰 回 答 巴 勒 说 ： 我 岂 不 是 告 诉 你 说 凡 耶 和 华 所 说 的 ， 我 必 须 遵 行 麽 ？
27 巴 勒 对 巴 兰 说 ： 来 罢 ， 我 领 你 往 别 处 去 ， 或 者 神 喜 欢 你 在 那 里 为 我 咒 诅 他 们 。
28 巴 勒 就 领 巴 兰 到 那 下 望 旷 野 的 ? 珥 山 顶 上 。
29 巴 兰 对 巴 勒 说 ： 你 在 这 里 为 我 筑 七 座 坛 ， 又 在 这 里 为 我 豫 备 七 只 公 牛 ， 七 只 公 羊 。
