Koning Balak vraagt Bileam om Israël te komen vervloeken
22 De Israëlieten trokken verder en zetten hun tentenkamp op langs de Jordaan in de vlakte van Moab. Aan de andere kant van de Jordaan lag de stad Jericho.
2 Koning Balak van Moab, de zoon van Zippor, zag wat Israël met de Amorieten had gedaan. 3 Daarom waren hij en zijn volk erg bang voor het volk Israël. Vooral omdat het zo groot was. 4 Toen overlegde Balak met de leiders van Midian. Hij zei: "Die mensenmassa van Israël zal ons hele land kaalvreten, zoals een koe het gras van het veld afvreet!" 5 En hij stuurde boodschappers naar de waarzegger Bileam, de zoon van Beor. Bileam woonde in Petor, aan de rivier van zijn vaderland.[a] Ze moesten hem zeggen: "Er is een volk uit Egypte gekomen dat zó groot is, dat het hele land door dat volk bedekt wordt. Het staat nu aan de grenzen van mijn land. 6 Dat volk is machtiger dan ik. Kom het daarom alsjeblieft voor mij vervloeken. Misschien zal ik hen dan kunnen overwinnen en uit het land wegjagen. Want ik weet dat als jij iemand zegent, dan is hij werkelijk gezegend. En als jij iemand vervloekt, dan is hij werkelijk vervloekt."
7 De leiders van Moab en van Midian gingen naar Bileam. Ze hadden het loon voor de waarzegger bij zich. Toen ze bij Bileam kwamen, vertelden ze hem de boodschap van Balak. 8 Bileam antwoordde: "Blijf deze nacht hier. Dan zal ik jullie morgen vertellen wat de Heer mij heeft gezegd." Toen bleven de leiders van Moab bij Bileam. 9 Die nacht kwam God naar Bileam toe en vroeg: "Wie zijn die mannen daar bij jou?" 10 Bileam antwoordde: "Dat zijn boodschappers van koning Balak van Moab. 11 Ze hebben me gezegd dat er een groot volk uit Egypte is gekomen. Een volk dat zó groot is, dat het hele land erdoor bedekt wordt. Koning Balak vraagt mij of ik dat volk voor hem wil komen vervloeken. Hij hoopt het dan te kunnen overwinnen en te kunnen wegjagen." 12 Toen zei God tegen Bileam: "Je mag niet met hen meegaan. Je mag dat volk niet vervloeken, want Ik heb het gezegend."
13 Bileam stond 's morgens op en zei tegen de leiders van Balak: "Ga naar jullie land terug, want ik mag van de Heer niet met jullie meegaan." 14 Toen gingen de leiders van Moab terug naar koning Balak. Ze zeiden hem: "Bileam wilde niet met ons meekomen." 15 Maar Balak stuurde opnieuw leiders, meer en belangrijker dan de vorige. 16 Toen ze bij Bileam kwamen, zeiden ze: "Koning Balak vraagt of je alsjeblieft wil komen. 17 Hij zal je een grote beloning geven. Hij zal je alles geven wat je vraagt. Als je dat volk maar voor hem vervloekt." 18 Maar Bileam antwoordde de mannen van Balak: "Al gaf Balak mij zijn huis vol zilver en goud, ik kan niet ongehoorzaam zijn aan het bevel van mijn Heer God. Niet in grote dingen, maar ook niet in kleine dingen. 19 Maar blijf vannacht hier. Dan zal ik zien wat de Heer mij hierover nog wil zeggen." 20 Die nacht kwam God naar Bileam toe en zei tegen hem: "Ga maar met die mannen mee, nu ze zijn gekomen om je te halen. Maar doe alleen wat Ik je zeg." 21 Toen stond Bileam 's morgens op, zadelde zijn ezel en ging met de leiders van Moab mee.
De ezel van Bileam
22 Maar God was vreselijk boos dat Bileam meeging. Hij stuurde zijn Engel om hem tegen te houden. Bileam reed op zijn ezel en had twee dienaren bij zich. 23 De ezel zag de Engel van de Heer met zijn zwaard in de hand op de weg staan. Daarom ging de ezel van de weg af, de akker op. Bileam sloeg de ezel om hem naar de weg terug te krijgen. 24 Toen ging de Engel van de Heer op een weg tussen de wijngaarden staan, op een plaats waar aan beide kanten een muur langs de weg was. 25 Toen de ezel de Engel van de Heer zag, drukte hij zich tegen de muur aan, zodat Bileams voet klem kwam te zitten tegen de muur. Hij sloeg de ezel opnieuw. 26 Toen ging de Engel van de Heer verderop staan, op een smalle plek waar geen ruimte was om langs Hem heen te komen. 27 Toen de ezel de Engel van de Heer weer zag, ging hij onder Bileam op de grond liggen. Bileam werd woedend en begon de ezel met zijn stok te slaan.
28 Toen zorgde de Heer ervoor dat de ezel kon praten. 29 De ezel zei tegen Bileam: "Je hebt me nu drie keer geslagen. Wat heb ik verkeerd gedaan?" Bileam antwoordde de ezel: "Je zet mij voor gek! Als ik een zwaard bij me had gehad, zou ik je nu doden." 30 Maar de ezel zei: "Je hebt je hele leven al op mij gereden. Heb ik ooit eerder zo tegen je gedaan?" En hij zei: "Nee." 31 Toen liet de Heer Bileam zien wat de ezel al had gezien. Hij zag de Engel van de Heer met zijn zwaard in de hand op de weg staan. Bileam knielde neer en boog zich met zijn gezicht tot de grond. 32 De Engel van de Heer zei tegen hem: "Waarom heb je je ezel nu drie keer geslagen? Ik sta hier als jouw vijand. Want Ik wil niet dat je deze reis maakt. 33 De ezel zag Mij en is drie keer voor Mij opzij gegaan. Als hij dat niet gedaan had, zou Ik jou nu hebben gedood en de ezel in leven hebben gelaten." 34 Toen zei Bileam tegen de Engel van de Heer: "Ik heb verkeerd gedaan. Ik wist niet dat U op de weg stond. Als U het verkeerd vindt dat ik ga, zal ik teruggaan." 35 Maar de Engel van de Heer zei tegen Bileam: "Ga met die mannen mee. Maar spreek alleen de woorden die Ik je geef." Toen ging Bileam met de leiders van Balak mee.
Bileam komt bij koning Balak
36 Balak hoorde dat Bileam eraan kwam. Hij ging hem tegemoet tot de stad van Moab die langs de Arnon ligt, de grens van het land. 37 Balak zei tegen Bileam: "Ik had je toch dringend gevraagd om te komen? Waarom kwam je niet meteen? Was je bang dat ik je niet goed zou belonen?" 38 Maar Bileam zei tegen Balak: "Ik ben nu toch gekomen? Maar ik weet niet of ik wel iets zal kunnen zeggen. Ik kan alleen de woorden spreken die God mij geeft." 39 Bileam ging met Balak mee naar Kirjat-Huzzot. 40 Daar offerde Balak koeien en schapen. Een deel van het vlees gaf hij aan Bileam en aan de leiders die bij hem waren. 41 De volgende morgen klom Balak met Bileam de heuvel van Baäl op. Vanaf dat punt kon hij het deel van het volk zien dat het dichtst bij de grens was.

22 Then (A)the children of Israel moved, and camped in the plains of Moab on the side of the Jordan across from Jericho.
2 Now (B)Balak the son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites. 3 And (C)Moab was exceedingly afraid of the people because they were many, and Moab was sick with dread because of the children of Israel. 4 So Moab said to (D)the elders of Midian, “Now this company will [a]lick up everything around us, as an ox licks up the grass of the field.” And Balak the son of Zippor was king of the Moabites at that time. 5 Then (E)he sent messengers to Balaam the son of Beor at (F)Pethor, which is near [b]the River in the land of [c]the sons of his people, to call him, saying: “Look, a people has come from Egypt. See, they cover the face of the earth, and are settling next to me! 6 (G)Therefore please come at once, (H)curse this people for me, for they are too mighty for me. Perhaps I shall be able to defeat them and drive them out of the land, for I know that he whom you bless is blessed, and he whom you curse is cursed.”
7 So the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian departed with (I)the diviner’s fee in their hand, and they came to Balaam and spoke to him the words of Balak. 8 And he said to them, (J)“Lodge here tonight, and I will bring back word to you, as the Lord speaks to me.” So the princes of Moab stayed with Balaam.
9 (K)Then God came to Balaam and said, “Who are these men with you?”
10 So Balaam said to God, “Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, has sent to me, saying, 11 ‘Look, a people has come out of Egypt, and they cover the face of the earth. Come now, curse them for me; perhaps I shall be able to overpower them and drive them out.’ ”
12 And God said to Balaam, “You shall not go with them; you shall not curse the people, for (L)they are blessed.”
13 So Balaam rose in the morning and said to the princes of Balak, “Go back to your land, for the Lord has refused to give me permission to go with you.”
14 And the princes of Moab rose and went to Balak, and said, “Balaam refuses to come with us.”
15 Then Balak again sent princes, more numerous and more [d]honorable than they. 16 And they came to Balaam and said to him, “Thus says Balak the son of Zippor: ‘Please let nothing hinder you from coming to me; 17 for I will certainly (M)honor you greatly, and I will do whatever you say to me. (N)Therefore please come, curse this people for me.’ ”
18 Then Balaam answered and said to the servants of Balak, (O)“Though Balak were to give me his house full of silver and gold, (P)I could not go beyond the word of the Lord my God, to do less or more. 19 Now therefore, please, you also (Q)stay here tonight, that I may know what more the Lord will say to me.”
20 (R)And God came to Balaam at night and said to him, “If the men come to call you, rise and go with them; but (S)only the word which I speak to you—that you shall do.” 21 So Balaam rose in the morning, saddled his donkey, and went with the princes of Moab.
Balaam, the Donkey, and the Angel
22 Then God’s anger was aroused because he went, (T)and the Angel of the Lord took His stand in the way as an adversary against him. And he was riding on his donkey, and his two servants were with him. 23 Now (U)the donkey saw the Angel of the Lord standing in the way with His drawn sword in His hand, and the donkey turned aside out of the way and went into the field. So Balaam struck the donkey to turn her back onto the road. 24 Then the Angel of the Lord stood in a narrow path between the vineyards, with a wall on this side and a wall on that side. 25 And when the donkey saw the Angel of the Lord, she pushed herself against the wall and crushed Balaam’s foot against the wall; so he struck her again. 26 Then the Angel of the Lord went further, and stood in a narrow place where there was no way to turn either to the right hand or to the left. 27 And when the donkey saw the Angel of the Lord, she lay down under Balaam; so Balaam’s anger was aroused, and he struck the donkey with his staff.
28 Then the Lord (V)opened the mouth of the donkey, and she said to Balaam, “What have I done to you, that you have struck me these three times?”
29 And Balaam said to the donkey, “Because you have [e]abused me. I wish there were a sword in my hand, (W)for now I would kill you!”
30 (X)So the donkey said to Balaam, “Am I not your donkey on which you have ridden, ever since I became yours, to this day? Was I ever [f]disposed to do this to you?”
And he said, “No.”
31 Then the Lord (Y)opened Balaam’s eyes, and he saw the Angel of the Lord standing in the way with His drawn sword in His hand; and he bowed his head and fell flat on his face. 32 And the Angel of the Lord said to him, “Why have you struck your donkey these three times? Behold, I have come out [g]to stand against you, because your way is (Z)perverse[h] before Me. 33 The donkey saw Me and turned aside from Me these three times. If she had not turned aside from Me, surely I would also have killed you by now, and let her live.”
34 And Balaam said to the Angel of the Lord, (AA)“I have sinned, for I did not know You stood in the way against me. Now therefore, if it [i]displeases You, I will turn back.”
35 Then the Angel of the Lord said to Balaam, “Go with the men, (AB)but only the word that I speak to you, that you shall speak.” So Balaam went with the princes of Balak.
36 Now when Balak heard that Balaam was coming, (AC)he went out to meet him at the city of Moab, (AD)which is on the border at the Arnon, the boundary of the territory. 37 Then Balak said to Balaam, “Did I not earnestly send to you, calling for you? Why did you not come to me? Am I not able (AE)to honor you?”
38 And Balaam said to Balak, “Look, I have come to you! Now, have I any power at all to say anything? (AF)The word that God puts in my mouth, that I must speak.” 39 So Balaam went with Balak, and they came to Kirjath Huzoth. 40 Then Balak offered oxen and sheep, and he sent some to Balaam and to the princes who were with him.
Balaam’s First Prophecy
41 So it was, the next day, that Balak took Balaam and brought him up to the (AG)high places of Baal, that from there he might observe [j]the extent of the people.

2 And Balak the son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites.
3 And Moab was sore afraid of the people, because they were many: and Moab was distressed because of the children of Israel.
4 And Moab said unto the elders of Midian, Now shall this company lick up all that are round about us, as the ox licketh up the grass of the field. And Balak the son of Zippor was king of the Moabites at that time.
5 He sent messengers therefore unto Balaam the son of Beor to Pethor, which is by the river of the land of the children of his people, to call him, saying, Behold, there is a people come out from Egypt: behold, they cover the face of the earth, and they abide over against me:
6 Come now therefore, I pray thee, curse me this people; for they are too mighty for me: peradventure I shall prevail, that we may smite them, and that I may drive them out of the land: for I wot that he whom thou blessest is blessed, and he whom thou cursest is cursed.

Behold, I have come out (W)to oppose you because your way is perverse[c] before me. 33 The donkey saw me and turned aside before me these three times. If she had not turned aside from me, surely just now I would have killed you and let her live.” 34 Then Balaam said to the angel of the Lord, (X)“I have sinned, for I did not know that you stood in the road against me. Now therefore, if it is evil in your sight, I will turn back.” 35 And the angel of the Lord said to Balaam, “Go with the men, (Y)but speak only the word that I tell you.” So Balaam went on with the princes of Balak.
36 When Balak heard that Balaam had come, he went out to meet him at the city of Moab, (Z)on the border formed by the Arnon, at the extremity of the border. 37 And Balak said to Balaam, “Did I not send to you to call you? Why did you not come to me? Am I not able to (AA)honor you?” 38 Balaam said to Balak, “Behold, I have come to you! Have I now any power of my own to speak anything? (AB)The word that God puts in my mouth, that must I speak.” 39 Then Balaam went with Balak, and they came to Kiriath-huzoth. 40 And Balak sacrificed oxen and sheep, and sent for Balaam and for the princes who were with him.
41 And in the morning Balak took Balaam and brought him up to Bamoth-baal, and from there he saw a fraction of the people.
