Rivolta di Israele
14 Allora tutta la comunità alzò la voce e diede in alte grida; il popolo pianse tutta quella notte. 2 Tutti gli Israeliti mormoravano contro Mosè e contro Aronne e tutta la comunità disse loro: «Oh! fossimo morti nel paese d'Egitto o fossimo morti in questo deserto! 3 E perché il Signore ci conduce in quel paese per cadere di spada? Le nostre mogli e i nostri bambini saranno preda. Non sarebbe meglio per noi tornare in Egitto?». 4 Si dissero l'un l'altro: «Diamoci un capo e torniamo in Egitto».
5 Allora Mosè e Aronne si prostrarono a terra dinanzi a tutta la comunità riunita degli Israeliti. 6 Giosuè figlio di Nun e Caleb figlio di Iefunne, che erano fra coloro che avevano esplorato il paese, si stracciarono le vesti 7 e parlarono così a tutta la comunità degli Israeliti: «Il paese che abbiamo attraversato per esplorarlo è un paese molto buono. 8 Se il Signore ci è favorevole, ci introdurrà in quel paese e ce lo darà: è un paese dove scorre latte e miele. 9 Soltanto, non vi ribellate al Signore e non abbiate paura del popolo del paese; è pane per noi e la loro difesa li ha abbandonati mentre il Signore è con noi; non ne abbiate paura».
Collera del Signore e intercessione di Mosè
10 Allora tutta la comunità parlò di lapidarli; ma la Gloria del Signore apparve sulla tenda del convegno a tutti gli Israeliti. 11 Il Signore disse a Mosè: «Fino a quando mi disprezzerà questo popolo? E fino a quando non avranno fede in me, dopo tutti i miracoli che ho fatti in mezzo a loro? 12 Io lo colpirò con la peste e lo distruggerò, ma farò di te una nazione più grande e più potente di esso».
13 Mosè disse al Signore: «Ma gli Egiziani hanno saputo che tu hai fatto uscire questo popolo con la tua potenza 14 e lo hanno detto agli abitanti di questo paese. Essi hanno udito che tu, Signore, sei in mezzo a questo popolo, e ti mostri loro faccia a faccia, che la tua nube si ferma sopra di loro e che cammini davanti a loro di giorno in una colonna di nube e di notte in una colonna di fuoco. 15 Ora se fai perire questo popolo come un solo uomo, le nazioni che hanno udito la tua fama, diranno: 16 Siccome il Signore non è stato in grado di far entrare questo popolo nel paese che aveva giurato di dargli, li ha ammazzati nel deserto. 17 Ora si mostri grande la potenza del mio Signore, perché tu hai detto: 18 Il Signore è lento all'ira e grande in bontà, perdona la colpa e la ribellione, ma non lascia senza punizione; castiga la colpa dei padri nei figli fino alla terza e alla quarta generazione. 19 Perdona l'iniquità di questo popolo, secondo la grandezza della tua bontà, così come hai perdonato a questo popolo dall'Egitto fin qui».
Perdono e castigo
20 Il Signore disse: «Io perdono come tu hai chiesto; 21 ma, per la mia vita, com'è vero che tutta la terra sarà piena della gloria del Signore, 22 tutti quegli uomini che hanno visto la mia gloria e i prodigi compiuti da me in Egitto e nel deserto e tuttavia mi hanno messo alla prova gia dieci volte e non hanno obbedito alla mia voce, 23 certo non vedranno il paese che ho giurato di dare ai loro padri. Nessuno di quelli che mi hanno disprezzato lo vedrà; 24 ma il mio servo Caleb che è stato animato da un altro spirito e mi ha seguito fedelmente io lo introdurrò nel paese dove è andato; la sua stirpe lo possiederà. 25 Gli Amaleciti e i Cananei abitano nella valle; domani tornate indietro, incamminatevi verso il deserto, per la via del Mare Rosso».
26 Il Signore disse ancora a Mosè e ad Aronne: 27 «Fino a quando sopporterò io questa comunità malvagia che mormora contro di me? Io ho udito le lamentele degli Israeliti contro di me. 28 Riferisci loro: Per la mia vita, dice il Signore, io vi farò quello che ho sentito dire da voi. 29 I vostri cadaveri cadranno in questo deserto. Nessuno di voi, di quanti siete stati registrati dall'età di venti anni in su e avete mormorato contro di me, 30 potrà entrare nel paese nel quale ho giurato di farvi abitare, se non Caleb, figlio di Iefunne, e Giosuè figlio di Nun. 31 I vostri bambini, dei quali avete detto che sarebbero diventati una preda di guerra, quelli ve li farò entrare; essi conosceranno il paese che voi avete disprezzato. 32 Ma i vostri cadaveri cadranno in questo deserto. 33 I vostri figli saranno nòmadi nel deserto per quarant'anni e porteranno il peso delle vostre infedeltà, finché i vostri cadaveri siano tutti quanti nel deserto. 34 Secondo il numero dei giorni che avete impiegato per esplorare il paese, quaranta giorni, sconterete le vostre iniquità per quarant'anni, un anno per ogni giorno e conoscerete la mia ostilità. 35 Io, il Signore, ho parlato. Così agirò con tutta questa comunità malvagia che si è riunita contro di me: in questo deserto saranno annientati e qui moriranno».
36 Gli uomini che Mosè aveva mandati a esplorare il paese e che, tornati, avevano fatto mormorare tutta la comunità contro di lui diffondendo il discredito sul paese, 37 quegli uomini che avevano propagato cattive voci su quel paese, morirono colpiti da un flagello, davanti al Signore. 38 Ma di quelli che erano andati a esplorare il paese rimasero vivi Giosuè, figlio di Nun, e Caleb, figlio di Iefunne.
Vano tentativo degli Israeliti
39 Mosè riferì quelle parole a tutti gli Israeliti; il popolo ne fu molto turbato. 40 La mattina si alzarono presto per salire verso la cima del monte, dicendo: «Eccoci qua; noi saliremo al luogo del quale il Signore ha detto che noi abbiamo peccato». 41 Ma Mosè disse: «Perché trasgredite l'ordine del Signore? La cosa non vi riuscirà. 42 Poiché il Signore non è in mezzo a voi, non salite perché non siate sconfitti dai vostri nemici! 43 Perché di fronte a voi stanno gli Amaleciti e i Cananei e voi cadrete di spada; perché avete abbandonato il Signore, il Signore non sarà con voi». 44 Si ostinarono a salire verso la cima del monte, ma l'arca dell'alleanza del Signore e Mosè non si mossero dall'accampamento. 45 Allora gli Amaleciti e i Cananei che abitavano su quel monte scesero, li batterono e ne fecero strage fino a Corma.

Incredulità e rivolta d'Israele.
I quarant'anni nel deserto
14 (A)Allora tutta la comunità gridò di sgomento e alzò la voce; e il popolo pianse tutta quella notte. 2 Tutti i figli d'*Israele mormorarono contro *Mosè e contro *Aaronne, e tutta la comunità disse loro: «Fossimo pur morti nel paese d'Egitto! O fossimo pur morti in questo deserto! 3 Perché il Signore ci conduce in quel paese dove cadremo per la spada? Là le nostre mogli e i nostri bambini diventeranno preda del nemico. Non sarebbe meglio per noi tornare in Egitto?» 4 E si dissero l'un l'altro: «Nominiamoci un capo, torniamo in Egitto!»
5 Allora Mosè e Aaronne si prostrarono a terra davanti a tutta la comunità riunita dei figli d'Israele. 6 E *Giosuè, figlio di Nun, e *Caleb, figlio di Gefunne, che erano tra quelli che avevano esplorato il paese, si stracciarono le vesti 7 e parlarono cosí a tutta la comunità dei figli d'Israele: «Il paese che abbiamo attraversato per esplorarlo è un paese buono, molto buono. 8 Se il Signore ci è favorevole, ci farà entrare in quel paese e ce lo darà: è un paese dove scorre il latte e il miele. 9 Soltanto, non vi ribellate al Signore e non abbiate paura del popolo di quel paese, poiché ne faremo nostro pascolo; l'ombra che li proteggeva si è ritirata, e il Signore è con noi; non li temete».
10 Allora tutta la comunità parlò di lapidarli; ma la gloria del Signore apparve sulla *tenda di convegno a tutti i figli d'Israele, 11 e il Signore disse a Mosè: «Fino a quando mi disprezzerà questo popolo? Fino a quando non avranno fede in me dopo tutti i miracoli che ho fatti in mezzo a loro? 12 Io lo colpirò con la peste e lo distruggerò, ma farò di te una nazione piú grande e piú potente di esso».
13 E Mosè disse al Signore: «Ma lo verranno a sapere gli abitanti dell'Egitto, da cui tu hai fatto uscire questo popolo per la tua potenza, 14 e la cosa sarà risaputa dagli abitanti di questo paese. Essi hanno udito che tu, o Signore, sei in mezzo a questo popolo e gli appari faccia a faccia, che la tua nuvola si ferma sopra di loro e che cammini davanti a loro di giorno in una colonna di nuvola, e di notte in una colonna di fuoco. 15 Ora, se fai perire questo popolo come un sol uomo, le nazioni che hanno udito la tua fama, diranno: 16 “Il Signore non è stato capace di far entrare questo popolo nel paese che aveva giurato di dargli, perciò li ha scannati nel deserto”. 17 Ora si mostri, ti prego, la potenza del Signore nella sua grandezza, come tu hai promesso dicendo: 18 “Il Signore è lento all'ira e grande in bontà; egli perdona l'*iniquità e il peccato, ma non lascia impunito il colpevole e punisce l'iniquità dei padri sui figli, fino alla terza e alla quarta generazione”. 19 Perdona, ti prego, l'iniquità di questo popolo, secondo la grandezza della tua bontà, come hai perdonato a questo popolo dall'Egitto fin qui».
20 Il Signore disse: «Io perdono, come tu hai chiesto. 21 Però, come è vero che io vivo, tutta la terra sarà piena della gloria del Signore. 22 Tutti gli uomini che hanno visto la mia gloria e i miracoli che ho fatto in Egitto e nel deserto, quelli che mi hanno tentato già dieci volte e non hanno ubbidito alla mia voce, 23 certo non vedranno il paese che promisi con giuramento ai loro padri. Nessuno di quelli che mi hanno disprezzato lo vedrà; 24 ma il mio servo Caleb è stato animato da un altro spirito e mi ha seguito pienamente; perciò io lo farò entrare nel paese nel quale è andato; e la sua discendenza lo possederà. 25 Gli *Amalechiti e i *Cananei abitano nella valle; voi domani tornate indietro, incamminatevi verso il deserto, in direzione del mar Rosso».
26 Il Signore parlò ancora a Mosè e ad Aaronne, e disse: 27 «Fino a quando sopporterò questa malvagia comunità che mormora contro di me? Io ho udito i mormorii che i figli d'Israele fanno contro di me. 28 Di' loro: “Com'è vero che io vivo, dice il Signore, io vi farò quello che ho sentito dire da voi. 29 I vostri cadaveri cadranno in questo deserto; e voi tutti, quanti siete, di cui si è fatto il censimento, dall'età di vent'anni in su, e che avete mormorato contro di me, 30 non entrerete di certo nel paese nel quale giurai di farvi abitare; salvo Caleb, figlio di Gefunne, e Giosuè, figlio di Nun. 31 I vostri bambini, di cui avete detto che sarebbero preda dei nemici, quelli farò entrare; ed essi conosceranno il paese che voi avete disprezzato. 32 Ma quanto a voi, i vostri cadaveri cadranno in questo deserto[a]. 33 I vostri figli andranno pascendo le greggi nel deserto per quarant'anni e porteranno la pena delle vostre infedeltà, finché i vostri cadaveri non siano consumati nel deserto. 34 Come avete messo quaranta giorni a esplorare il paese, porterete la pena delle vostre iniquità per quarant'anni, un anno per ogni giorno, e saprete che cosa sia cadere in disgrazia presso di me”. 35 Io, il Signore, ho parlato: certo, cosí farò a tutta questa comunità malvagia, la quale si è riunita contro di me; in questo deserto saranno consumati e vi moriranno».
36 Gli uomini che Mosè aveva mandato a esplorare il paese e che, tornati screditando il paese, avevano fatto mormorare tutta la comunità contro di lui, 37 quegli uomini, dico, che avevano screditato il paese, morirono colpiti da una piaga, davanti al Signore. 38 Ma Giosuè, figlio di Nun, e Caleb, figlio di Gefunne, rimasero vivi tra quelli che erano andati a esplorare il paese.
39 (B)Mosè riferí quelle parole a tutti i figli d'Israele; e il popolo ne fece grande cordoglio. 40 La mattina si alzarono di buon'ora e salirono sulla cima del monte, e dissero: «Eccoci qua; noi saliremo al luogo di cui ha parlato il Signore, poiché abbiamo peccato». 41 Ma Mosè disse: «Perché *trasgredite l'ordine del Signore? La cosa non vi riuscirà bene. 42 Non salite, perché il Signore non è in mezzo a voi. Non fatevi sconfiggere dai vostri nemici! 43 Poiché là, di fronte a voi, stanno gli Amalechiti e i Cananei, e voi cadrete per la spada; poiché vi siete sviati dal Signore, il Signore non sarà con voi». 44 Nondimeno, si ostinarono a salire sulla cima del monte; ma l'*arca del patto del Signore e Mosè non si mossero dall'accampamento. 45 Allora gli Amalechiti e i Cananei che abitavano su quel monte scesero giú, li sconfissero, e li fecero a pezzi fino a Corma.

14 That night all the members of the community raised their voices and wept aloud.(A) 2 All the Israelites grumbled(B) against Moses and Aaron, and the whole assembly said to them, “If only we had died in Egypt!(C) Or in this wilderness!(D) 3 Why is the Lord bringing us to this land only to let us fall by the sword?(E) Our wives and children(F) will be taken as plunder.(G) Wouldn’t it be better for us to go back to Egypt?(H)” 4 And they said to each other, “We should choose a leader and go back to Egypt.(I)”
5 Then Moses and Aaron fell facedown(J) in front of the whole Israelite assembly(K) gathered there. 6 Joshua son of Nun(L) and Caleb son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had explored the land, tore their clothes(M) 7 and said to the entire Israelite assembly, “The land we passed through and explored is exceedingly good.(N) 8 If the Lord is pleased with us,(O) he will lead us into that land, a land flowing with milk and honey,(P) and will give it to us.(Q) 9 Only do not rebel(R) against the Lord. And do not be afraid(S) of the people of the land,(T) because we will devour them. Their protection is gone, but the Lord is with(U) us.(V) Do not be afraid of them.”(W)
10 But the whole assembly talked about stoning(X) them. Then the glory of the Lord(Y) appeared at the tent of meeting to all the Israelites. 11 The Lord said to Moses, “How long will these people treat me with contempt?(Z) How long will they refuse to believe in me,(AA) in spite of all the signs(AB) I have performed among them? 12 I will strike them down with a plague(AC) and destroy them, but I will make you into a nation(AD) greater and stronger than they.”(AE)
13 Moses said to the Lord, “Then the Egyptians will hear about it! By your power you brought these people up from among them.(AF) 14 And they will tell the inhabitants of this land about it. They have already heard(AG) that you, Lord, are with these people(AH) and that you, Lord, have been seen face to face,(AI) that your cloud stays over them,(AJ) and that you go before them in a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night.(AK) 15 If you put all these people to death, leaving none alive, the nations who have heard this report about you will say, 16 ‘The Lord was not able to bring these people into the land he promised them on oath,(AL) so he slaughtered them in the wilderness.’(AM)
17 “Now may the Lord’s strength be displayed, just as you have declared: 18 ‘The Lord is slow to anger, abounding in love and forgiving sin and rebellion.(AN) Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation.’(AO) 19 In accordance with your great love, forgive(AP) the sin of these people,(AQ) just as you have pardoned them from the time they left Egypt until now.”(AR)
20 The Lord replied, “I have forgiven them,(AS) as you asked. 21 Nevertheless, as surely as I live(AT) and as surely as the glory of the Lord(AU) fills the whole earth,(AV) 22 not one of those who saw my glory and the signs(AW) I performed in Egypt and in the wilderness but who disobeyed me and tested me ten times(AX)— 23 not one of them will ever see the land I promised on oath(AY) to their ancestors. No one who has treated me with contempt(AZ) will ever see it.(BA) 24 But because my servant Caleb(BB) has a different spirit and follows me wholeheartedly,(BC) I will bring him into the land he went to, and his descendants will inherit it.(BD) 25 Since the Amalekites(BE) and the Canaanites(BF) are living in the valleys, turn(BG) back tomorrow and set out toward the desert along the route to the Red Sea.[a](BH)”
26 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron: 27 “How long will this wicked community grumble against me? I have heard the complaints of these grumbling Israelites.(BI) 28 So tell them, ‘As surely as I live,(BJ) declares the Lord, I will do to you(BK) the very thing I heard you say: 29 In this wilderness your bodies will fall(BL)—every one of you twenty years old or more(BM) who was counted in the census(BN) and who has grumbled against me. 30 Not one of you will enter the land(BO) I swore with uplifted hand(BP) to make your home, except Caleb son of Jephunneh(BQ) and Joshua son of Nun.(BR) 31 As for your children that you said would be taken as plunder, I will bring them in to enjoy the land you have rejected.(BS) 32 But as for you, your bodies will fall(BT) in this wilderness. 33 Your children will be shepherds here for forty years,(BU) suffering for your unfaithfulness, until the last of your bodies lies in the wilderness. 34 For forty years(BV)—one year for each of the forty days you explored the land(BW)—you will suffer for your sins and know what it is like to have me against you.’ 35 I, the Lord, have spoken, and I will surely do these things(BX) to this whole wicked community, which has banded together against me. They will meet their end in this wilderness; here they will die.(BY)”
36 So the men Moses had sent(BZ) to explore the land, who returned and made the whole community grumble(CA) against him by spreading a bad report(CB) about it— 37 these men who were responsible for spreading the bad report(CC) about the land were struck down and died of a plague(CD) before the Lord. 38 Of the men who went to explore the land,(CE) only Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh survived.(CF)
39 When Moses reported this(CG) to all the Israelites, they mourned(CH) bitterly. 40 Early the next morning they set out for the highest point in the hill country,(CI) saying, “Now we are ready to go up to the land the Lord promised. Surely we have sinned!(CJ)”
41 But Moses said, “Why are you disobeying the Lord’s command? This will not succeed!(CK) 42 Do not go up, because the Lord is not with you. You will be defeated by your enemies,(CL) 43 for the Amalekites(CM) and the Canaanites(CN) will face you there. Because you have turned away from the Lord, he will not be with you(CO) and you will fall by the sword.”
44 Nevertheless, in their presumption they went up(CP) toward the highest point in the hill country, though neither Moses nor the ark of the Lord’s covenant moved from the camp.(CQ) 45 Then the Amalekites and the Canaanites(CR) who lived in that hill country(CS) came down and attacked them and beat them down all the way to Hormah.(CT)

7 And they spake unto all the company of the children of Israel, saying, The land, which we passed through to search it, is an exceeding good land.
8 If the Lord delight in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it us; a land which floweth with milk and honey.
9 Only rebel not ye against the Lord, neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defence is departed from them, and the Lord is with us: fear them not.
10 But all the congregation bade stone them with stones. And the glory of the Lord appeared in the tabernacle of the congregation before all the children of Israel.
11 And the Lord said unto Moses, How long will this people provoke me? and how long will it be ere they believe me, for all the signs which I have shewed among them?
12 I will smite them with the pestilence, and disinherit them, and will make of thee a greater nation and mightier than they.
13 And Moses said unto the Lord, Then the Egyptians shall hear it, (for thou broughtest up this people in thy might from among them;)
14 And they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land: for they have heard that thou Lord art among this people, that thou Lord art seen face to face, and that thy cloud standeth over them, and that thou goest before them, by day time in a pillar of a cloud, and in a pillar of fire by night.
15 Now if thou shalt kill all this people as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of thee will speak, saying,
16 Because the Lord was not able to bring this people into the land which he sware unto them, therefore he hath slain them in the wilderness.
17 And now, I beseech thee, let the power of my lord be great, according as thou hast spoken, saying,
18 The Lord is longsuffering, and of great mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation.
19 Pardon, I beseech thee, the iniquity of this people according unto the greatness of thy mercy, and as thou hast forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.
20 And the Lord said, I have pardoned according to thy word:
21 But as truly as I live, all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the Lord.
22 Because all those men which have seen my glory, and my miracles, which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and have tempted me now these ten times, and have not hearkened to my voice;
23 Surely they shall not see the land which I sware unto their fathers, neither shall any of them that provoked me see it:
24 But my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed me fully, him will I bring into the land whereinto he went; and his seed shall possess it.
25 (Now the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwelt in the valley.) Tomorrow turn you, and get you into the wilderness by the way of the Red sea.
26 And the Lord spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying,
27 How long shall I bear with this evil congregation, which murmur against me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against me.
28 Say unto them, As truly as I live, saith the Lord, as ye have spoken in mine ears, so will I do to you:
29 Your carcases shall fall in this wilderness; and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward which have murmured against me.
30 Doubtless ye shall not come into the land, concerning which I sware to make you dwell therein, save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.
31 But your little ones, which ye said should be a prey, them will I bring in, and they shall know the land which ye have despised.
32 But as for you, your carcases, they shall fall in this wilderness.
33 And your children shall wander in the wilderness forty years, and bear your whoredoms, until your carcases be wasted in the wilderness.
34 After the number of the days in which ye searched the land, even forty days, each day for a year, shall ye bear your iniquities, even forty years, and ye shall know my breach of promise.
35 I the Lord have said, I will surely do it unto all this evil congregation, that are gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die.
36 And the men, which Moses sent to search the land, who returned, and made all the congregation to murmur against him, by bringing up a slander upon the land,
37 Even those men that did bring up the evil report upon the land, died by the plague before the Lord.
38 But Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, which were of the men that went to search the land, lived still.
39 And Moses told these sayings unto all the children of Israel: and the people mourned greatly.
40 And they rose up early in the morning, and gat them up into the top of the mountain, saying, Lo, we be here, and will go up unto the place which the Lord hath promised: for we have sinned.
41 And Moses said, Wherefore now do ye transgress the commandment of the Lord? but it shall not prosper.
42 Go not up, for the Lord is not among you; that ye be not smitten before your enemies.
43 For the Amalekites and the Canaanites are there before you, and ye shall fall by the sword: because ye are turned away from the Lord, therefore the Lord will not be with you.
44 But they presumed to go up unto the hill top: nevertheless the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and Moses, departed not out of the camp.
45 Then the Amalekites came down, and the Canaanites which dwelt in that hill, and smote them, and discomfited them, even unto Hormah.
