13 (A)Il Signore disse a Mosè: 2 «Manda degli uomini a esplorare il paese di Canaan che io do ai figli d’Israele. Mandate un uomo per ogni tribù dei loro padri; siano tutti loro capi». 3 E Mosè li mandò dal deserto di Paran, secondo l’ordine del Signore; quegli uomini erano tutti capi dei figli d’Israele.
4 Questi erano i loro nomi. Per la tribù di Ruben: Sammua, figlio di Zaccur;
5 per la tribù di Simeone: Safat, figlio di Cori;
6 per la tribù di Giuda: Caleb, figlio di Gefunne;
7 per la tribù d’Issacar: Igal, figlio di Giuseppe;
8 per la tribù di Efraim: Osea, figlio di Nun;
9 per la tribù di Beniamino: Palti, figlio di Rafu;
10 per la tribù di Zabulon: Gaddiel, figlio di Sodi;
11 per la tribù di Giuseppe, cioè per la tribù di Manasse: Gaddi, figlio di Susi;
12 per la tribù di Dan: Ammiel, figlio di Ghemalli;
13 per la tribù di Ascer: Setur, figlio di Micael;
14 per la tribù di Neftali: Nabi, figlio di Vofsi;
15 per la tribù di Gad: Gheual, figlio di Machi.
16 Questi sono i nomi degli uomini che Mosè mandò a esplorare il paese. E Mosè diede a Osea, figlio di Nun, il nome di Giosuè[a].
17 Mosè dunque li mandò a esplorare il paese di Canaan, e disse loro: «Andate su di qua per il mezzogiorno; poi salirete sui monti 18 e vedrete che paese è, che popolo lo abita, se è forte o debole, se è poco o molto numeroso; 19 come è il paese che abita, se è buono o cattivo, e come sono le città dove abita, se sono degli accampamenti o dei luoghi fortificati; 20 e come è il terreno, se è grasso o magro, se vi sono alberi o no. Abbiate coraggio e portate dei frutti del paese». Era il tempo in cui cominciava a maturare l’uva.
21 Quelli dunque salirono a esplorare il paese dal deserto di Sin fino a Reob, sulla via di Camat. 22 Salirono per il mezzogiorno e andarono fino a Ebron, dove erano Aiman, Sesai e Talmai, figli di Anac. Ebron era stata costruita sette anni prima di Soan in Egitto. 23 Giunsero fino alla valle di Escol[b], dove tagliarono un tralcio con un grappolo d’uva, che portarono in due con una stanga, e presero anche delle melagrane e dei fichi. 24 Quel luogo fu chiamato valle di Escol a causa del grappolo d’uva che i figli d’Israele vi tagliarono.
25 Dopo quaranta giorni tornarono dall’esplorazione del paese 26 e andarono a trovare Mosè e Aaronne e tutta la comunità dei figli d’Israele nel deserto di Paran, a Cades: riferirono ogni cosa a loro e a tutta la comunità e mostrarono loro i frutti del paese.
27 Fecero il loro racconto, e dissero: «Noi arrivammo nel paese dove tu ci mandasti, ed è davvero un paese dove scorrono il latte e il miele, ed ecco alcuni suoi frutti. 28 Però il popolo che abita il paese è potente, le città sono fortificate e grandissime, e vi abbiamo anche visto dei figli di Anac. 29 Gli Amalechiti abitano la parte meridionale del paese; gli Ittiti, i Gebusei e gli Amorei, la regione montuosa; e i Cananei abitano presso il mare e lungo il Giordano».
30 Caleb calmò il popolo che mormorava contro Mosè, e disse: «Saliamo pure e conquistiamo il paese, perché possiamo riuscirci benissimo». 31 Ma gli uomini che vi erano andati con lui dissero: «Noi non siamo capaci di salire contro questo popolo, perché è più forte di noi». 32 E screditarono presso i figli d’Israele il paese che avevano esplorato, dicendo: «Il paese che abbiamo attraversato per esplorarlo è un paese che divora i suoi abitanti; tutta la gente che vi abbiamo vista è gente di alta statura; 33 e vi abbiamo visto i giganti, figli di Anac, della razza dei giganti. Di fronte a loro ci pareva di essere cavallette; e tali sembravamo a loro».

13 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 (B)“Send men to spy out the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the children of Israel; from each tribe of their fathers you shall send a man, every one a leader among them.”
3 So Moses sent them (C)from the Wilderness of Paran according to the command of the Lord, all of them men who were heads of the children of Israel. 4 Now these were their names: from the tribe of Reuben, Shammua the son of Zaccur; 5 from the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori; 6 (D)from the tribe of Judah, (E)Caleb the son of Jephunneh; 7 from the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph; 8 from the tribe of Ephraim, [a]Hoshea the son of Nun; 9 from the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu; 10 from the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel the son of Sodi; 11 from the tribe of Joseph, that is, from the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi the son of Susi; 12 from the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of Gemalli; 13 from the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael; 14 from the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi the son of Vophsi; 15 from the tribe of Gad, Geuel the son of Machi.
16 These are the names of the men whom Moses sent to [b]spy out the land. And Moses called (F)Hoshea[c] the son of Nun, Joshua.
17 Then Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, and said to them, “Go up this way into the South, and go up to (G)the mountains, 18 and see what the land is like: whether the people who dwell in it are strong or weak, few or many; 19 whether the land they dwell in is good or bad; whether the cities they inhabit are like camps or strongholds; 20 whether the land is [d]rich or poor; and whether there are forests there or not. (H)Be of good courage. And bring some of the fruit of the land.” Now the time was the season of the first ripe grapes.
21 So they went up and spied out the land (I)from the Wilderness of Zin as far as (J)Rehob, near the entrance of (K)Hamath. 22 And they went up through the South and came to (L)Hebron; Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the descendants of (M)Anak, were there. (Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.) 23 (N)Then they came to the [e]Valley of Eshcol, and there cut down a branch with one cluster of grapes; they carried it between two of them on a pole. They also brought some of the pomegranates and figs. 24 The place was called the Valley of [f]Eshcol, because of the cluster which the men of Israel cut down there. 25 And they returned from spying out the land after forty days.
26 Now they departed and came back to Moses and Aaron and all the congregation of the children of Israel in the Wilderness of Paran, at (O)Kadesh; they brought back word to them and to all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land. 27 Then they told him, and said: “We went to the land where you sent us. It truly [g]flows with (P)milk and honey, (Q)and this is its fruit. 28 Nevertheless the (R)people who dwell in the land are strong; the cities are fortified and very large; moreover we saw the descendants of (S)Anak there. 29 (T)The Amalekites dwell in the land of the South; the Hittites, the Jebusites, and the Amorites dwell in the mountains; and the Canaanites dwell by the sea and along the banks of the Jordan.”
30 Then (U)Caleb quieted the people before Moses, and said, “Let us go up at once and take possession, for we are well able to overcome it.”
31 (V)But the men who had gone up with him said, “We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we.” 32 And they (W)gave the children of Israel a bad report of the land which they had spied out, saying, “The land through which we have gone as spies is a land that devours its inhabitants, and (X)all the people whom we saw in it are men of great stature. 33 There we saw the [h]giants ((Y)the descendants of Anak came from the giants); and we were (Z)like[i] grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were (AA)in their sight.”

Mose sendet Kundschafter nach Kanaan (5. Mose 1,19‒28)
13 Der Herr sprach zu Mose: 2 »Sende Kundschafter nach Kanaan! Sie sollen sich in dem Land umsehen, das ich euch Israeliten geben will. Such dazu aus jedem Stamm einen angesehenen Mann aus!«
3 Mose tat, was der Herr ihm befohlen hatte. Alle, die er in der Wüste Paran auswählte, gehörten zu den führenden Männern ihrer Stämme.
4 Es waren Schammua, der Sohn von Sakkur aus dem Stamm Ruben,
5 Schafat, der Sohn von Hori aus dem Stamm Simeon,
6 Kaleb, der Sohn von Jefunne aus dem Stamm Juda,
7 Jigal, der Sohn von Josef aus dem Stamm Issachar,
8 Hoschea, der Sohn von Nun aus dem Stamm Ephraim,
9 Palti, der Sohn von Rafu aus dem Stamm Benjamin,
10 Gaddiël, der Sohn von Sodi aus dem Stamm Sebulon,
11 Gaddi, der Sohn von Susi aus dem Stamm Manasse,
12 Ammiël, der Sohn von Gemalli aus dem Stamm Dan,
13 Setur, der Sohn von Michael aus dem Stamm Asser,
14 Nachbi, der Sohn von Wofsi aus dem Stamm Naftali,
15 und Gëuël, der Sohn von Machi aus dem Stamm Gad.
16 Diese Männer beauftragte Mose, das Land zu erkunden. Hoschea, dem Sohn von Nun, gab er einen neuen Namen: Josua (»Der Herr ist Rettung«).
17 Bevor Mose die Kundschafter losschickte, sagte er zu ihnen: »Nehmt den Weg durch die Wüste Negev und geht ins Gebirge hinauf! 18 Seht euch das Land an und die Menschen, die dort leben. Findet heraus, ob sie stark oder schwach sind, zahlreich oder wenig, 19 ob sie in ungeschützten Siedlungen oder in befestigten Städten wohnen. Seht, ob das Land gut oder schlecht ist, 20 fruchtbar oder karg, und ob es dort Bäume gibt. Habt keine Angst! Und bringt uns etwas von den Früchten mit, die dort wachsen.« Zu der Jahreszeit reiften nämlich gerade die ersten Trauben.
21 Die Männer brachen auf und erkundeten das Land Kanaan von der Wüste Zin im Süden bis zur Stadt Rehob im Norden, die an der Straße nach Hamat liegt. 22 Zunächst durchquerten sie die Wüste Negev und erreichten Hebron. Dort lebten die Sippen Ahiman, Scheschai und Talmai vom Volk der Anakiter. Ihre Stadt war sieben Jahre früher als das ägyptische Zoan gegründet worden. 23 Dann kamen die Kundschafter ins Eschkol-Tal. Dort pflückten sie Granatäpfel und Feigen. Sie schnitten eine Weinrebe ab, die so schwer war, dass zwei Männer sie an einer Stange tragen mussten. 24 Darum nannte man dieses Tal später Eschkol (»Traube«).
25 Vierzig Tage lang erkundeten die zwölf Männer das Land. Dann kehrten sie zurück. 26 Als die Kundschafter in Kadesch in der Wüste Paran eintrafen, berichteten sie Mose, Aaron und dem ganzen Volk, was sie gesehen hatten, und zeigten ihnen die Früchte aus Kanaan. 27 Sie sagten zu Mose: »Wir sind in dem Land gewesen, in das du uns geschickt hast. Du hattest recht: Dort gibt es sogar Milch und Honig im Überfluss. Sieh dir nur diese Früchte an! 28 Allerdings leben mächtige Völker dort, und ihre Städte sind gewaltige Festungen. Wir haben Anakiter gesehen. 29 Und in der Wüste Negev siedeln die Amalekiter, im Gebirge die Hetiter, Jebusiter und Amoriter. Außerdem wohnen am Mittelmeer und am Jordan die Kanaaniter.«
30 Da machten die Israeliten Mose wieder Vorwürfe. Kaleb versuchte, sie zu beruhigen, und rief: »Wir sind stark genug, das Land zu erobern. Wir müssen nur losziehen und es in Besitz nehmen!« 31 Aber die anderen Kundschafter widersprachen: »Gegen diese Völker können wir auf keinen Fall antreten. Sie sind viel stärker als wir.« 32 Und sie erzählten den Israeliten die schlimmsten Geschichten über ihre Reise: »Wir haben das Land durchzogen, wir wissen, wie es dort aussieht. Glaubt uns, dort herrschen Mord und Totschlag![a] Alle Menschen, die wir gesehen haben, sind groß und kräftig. 33 Die Anakiter, die wir getroffen haben, sind Riesen. In deren Augen waren wir klein wie Heuschrecken, und so haben wir uns auch gefühlt!«

3 So at the Lord’s command Moses sent them out from the Desert of Paran. All of them were leaders of the Israelites.(E) 4 These are their names:
from the tribe of Reuben, Shammua son of Zakkur;
5 from the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat son of Hori;
6 from the tribe of Judah, Caleb son of Jephunneh;(F)
7 from the tribe of Issachar, Igal son of Joseph;

17 When Moses sent them to explore Canaan,(K) he said, “Go up through the Negev(L) and on into the hill country.(M) 18 See what the land is like and whether the people who live there are strong or weak, few or many. 19 What kind of land do they live in? Is it good or bad? What kind of towns do they live in? Are they unwalled or fortified? 20 How is the soil? Is it fertile or poor? Are there trees in it or not? Do your best to bring back some of the fruit of the land.(N)” (It was the season for the first ripe grapes.)(O)
21 So they went up and explored the land from the Desert of Zin(P) as far as Rehob,(Q) toward Lebo Hamath.(R) 22 They went up through the Negev and came to Hebron,(S) where Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai,(T) the descendants of Anak,(U) lived. (Hebron had been built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)(V) 23 When they reached the Valley of Eshkol,[a](W) they cut off a branch bearing a single cluster of grapes. Two of them carried it on a pole between them, along with some pomegranates(X) and figs.(Y) 24 That place was called the Valley of Eshkol because of the cluster of grapes the Israelites cut off there. 25 At the end of forty days(Z) they returned from exploring the land.(AA)
Report on the Exploration
26 They came back to Moses and Aaron and the whole Israelite community at Kadesh(AB) in the Desert of Paran.(AC) There they reported to them(AD) and to the whole assembly and showed them the fruit of the land.(AE) 27 They gave Moses this account: “We went into the land to which you sent us, and it does flow with milk and honey!(AF) Here is its fruit.(AG) 28 But the people who live there are powerful, and the cities are fortified and very large.(AH) We even saw descendants of Anak(AI) there.(AJ) 29 The Amalekites(AK) live in the Negev; the Hittites,(AL) Jebusites(AM) and Amorites(AN) live in the hill country;(AO) and the Canaanites(AP) live near the sea and along the Jordan.(AQ)”
30 Then Caleb(AR) silenced the people before Moses and said, “We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it.”
31 But the men who had gone up with him said, “We can’t attack those people; they are stronger than we are.”(AS) 32 And they spread among the Israelites a bad report(AT) about the land they had explored. They said, “The land we explored devours(AU) those living in it. All the people we saw there are of great size.(AV) 33 We saw the Nephilim(AW) there (the descendants of Anak(AX) come from the Nephilim). We seemed like grasshoppers(AY) in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them.”
