13 Il Signore disse a Mosè: 2 «Manda uomini a esplorare il paese di Canaan che sto per dare agli Israeliti. Mandate un uomo per ogni tribù dei loro padri; siano tutti dei loro capi». 3 Mosè li mandò dal deserto di Paran, secondo il comando del Signore; quegli uomini erano tutti capi degli Israeliti.
4 Questi erano i loro nomi: per la tribù di Ruben, Sammua figlio di Zaccur; 5 per la tribù di Simeone, Safat figlio di Cori; 6 per la tribù di Giuda, Caleb figlio di Iefunne; 7 per la tribù di Issacar, Igheal figlio di Giuseppe; per la tribù di Efraim, 8 Osea figlio di Nun; 9 per la tribù di Beniamino, Palti figlio di Rafu; 10 per la tribù di Zàbulon, Gaddiel figlio di Sodi; 11 per la tribù di Giuseppe, cioè per la tribù di Manàsse, Gaddi figlio di Susi; 12 per la tribù di Dan, Ammiel figlio di Ghemalli; 13 per la tribù di Aser, Setur figlio di Michele; 14 per la tribù di Nèftali, Nacbi figlio di Vofsi; 15 per la tribù di Gad, Gheuel figlio di Machi. 16 Questi sono i nomi degli uomini che Mosè mandò a esplorare il paese. Mosè diede ad Osea, figlio di Nun, il nome di Giosuè.
17 Mosè dunque li mandò a esplorare il paese di Canaan e disse loro: «Salite attraverso il Negheb; poi salirete alla regione montana 18 e osserverete che paese sia, che popolo l'abiti, se forte o debole, se poco o molto numeroso; 19 come sia la regione che esso abita, se buona o cattiva, e come siano le città dove abita, se siano accampamenti o luoghi fortificati; 20 come sia il terreno, se fertile o sterile, se vi siano alberi o no. Siate coraggiosi e portate frutti del paese». Era il tempo in cui cominciava a maturare l'uva.
21 Quelli dunque salirono ed esplorarono il paese dal deserto di Sin, fino a Recob, in direzione di Amat. 22 Salirono attraverso il Negheb e andarono fino a Ebron, dove erano Achiman, Sesai e Talmai, figli di Anak. Ora Ebron era stata edificata sette anni prima di Tanis in Egitto. 23 Giunsero fino alla valle di Escol, dove tagliarono un tralcio con un grappolo d'uva, che portarono in due con una stanga, e presero anche melagrane e fichi.
24 Quel luogo fu chiamato valle di Escol a causa del grappolo d'uva che gli Israeliti vi tagliarono.
Il rapporto degli esploratori
25 Alla fine di quaranta giorni tornarono dall'esplorazione del paese 26 e andarono a trovare Mosè e Aronne e tutta la comunità degli Israeliti nel deserto di Paran, a Kades; riferirono ogni cosa a loro e a tutta la comunità e mostrarono loro i frutti del paese. 27 Raccontarono: «Noi siamo arrivati nel paese dove tu ci avevi mandato ed è davvero un paese dove scorre latte e miele; ecco i suoi frutti. 28 Ma il popolo che abita il paese è potente, le città sono fortificate e immense e vi abbiamo anche visto i figli di Anak. 29 Gli Amaleciti abitano la regione del Negheb; gli Hittiti, i Gebusei e gli Amorrei le montagne; i Cananei abitano presso il mare e lungo la riva del Giordano». 30 Caleb calmò il popolo che mormorava contro Mosè e disse: «Andiamo presto e conquistiamo il paese, perché certo possiamo riuscirvi». 31 Ma gli uomini che vi erano andati con lui dissero: «Noi non saremo capaci di andare contro questo popolo, perché è più forte di noi». 32 Screditarono presso gli Israeliti il paese che avevano esplorato, dicendo: «Il paese che abbiamo attraversato per esplorarlo è un paese che divora i suoi abitanti; tutta la gente che vi abbiamo notata è gente di alta statura; 33 vi abbiamo visto i giganti, figli di Anak, della razza dei giganti, di fronte ai quali ci sembrava di essere come locuste e così dovevamo sembrare a loro».

4 Questi erano i loro nomi:

16 Questi sono i nomi degli uomini che Mosè mandò a esplorare il paese. E Mosè diede a Osea, figlio di Nun, il nome di *Giosuè[a].
17 Mosè dunque li mandò a esplorare il paese di Canaan, e disse loro: «Andate su di qua per il *mezzogiorno; poi salirete sui monti 18 e vedrete che paese è, che popolo lo abita, se è forte o debole, se è poco o molto numeroso; 19 come è il paese che abita, se è buono o cattivo, e come sono le città dove abita, se sono degli accampamenti o dei luoghi fortificati; 20 e come è il terreno, se è grasso o magro, se vi sono alberi o no. Abbiate coraggio e portate dei frutti del paese. Era il tempo in cui cominciava a maturare l'uva.
21 Quelli dunque salirono a esplorare il paese dal deserto di Sin fino a Reob, sulla via di Amat. 22 Salirono per il mezzogiorno e andarono fino a Ebron, dove erano Aiman, Sesai e Talmai, figli di *Anac. Ebron era stata costruita sette anni prima di Soan in Egitto. 23 Giunsero fino alla valle d'Escol[b], dove tagliarono un tralcio con un grappolo d'uva, che portarono in due con una stanga, e presero anche delle melagrane e dei fichi. 24 Quel luogo fu chiamato valle d'Escol a causa del grappolo d'uva che i figli d'Israele vi tagliarono.

27 Fecero il loro racconto, e dissero: «Noi arrivammo nel paese dove tu ci mandasti, ed è davvero un paese dove scorre il latte e il miele, ed ecco alcuni suoi frutti. 28 Però, il popolo che abita il paese è potente, le città sono fortificate e grandissime, e vi abbiamo anche visto dei figli di Anac. 29 Gli *Amalechiti abitano la parte meridionale del paese; gli Ittiti, i Gebusei e gli *Amorei, la regione montuosa; e i Cananei abitano presso il mare e lungo il *Giordano».
30 Caleb calmò il popolo che mormorava contro Mosè, e disse: «Saliamo pure e conquistiamo il paese, perché possiamo riuscirci benissimo». 31 Ma gli uomini che vi erano andati con lui, dissero: «Noi non siamo capaci di salire contro questo popolo, perché è piú forte di noi». 32 E screditarono presso i figli d'Israele il paese che avevano esplorato, dicendo: «Il paese che abbiamo attraversato per esplorarlo è un paese che divora i suoi abitanti; tutta la gente che vi abbiamo vista, è gente di alta statura; 33 e vi abbiamo visto i giganti, figli di Anac, della razza dei giganti. Di fronte a loro ci pareva di essere *cavallette; e tali sembravamo a loro».

13 L'Éternel parla à Moïse, et dit:
2 Envoie des hommes pour explorer le pays de Canaan, que je donne aux enfants d'Israël. Tu enverras un homme de chacune des tribus de leurs pères; tous seront des principaux d'entre eux.
3 Moïse les envoya du désert de Paran, d'après l'ordre de l'Éternel; tous ces hommes étaient chefs des enfants d'Israël.
4 Voici leurs noms. Pour la tribu de Ruben: Schammua, fils de Zaccur;
5 pour la tribu de Siméon: Schaphath, fils de Hori;

17 Moïse les envoya pour explorer le pays de Canaan. Il leur dit: Montez ici, par le midi; et vous monterez sur la montagne.
18 Vous verrez le pays, ce qu'il est, et le peuple qui l'habite, s'il est fort ou faible, s'il est en petit ou en grand nombre;
19 ce qu'est le pays où il habite, s'il est bon ou mauvais; ce que sont les villes où il habite, si elles sont ouvertes ou fortifiées;
20 ce qu'est le terrain, s'il est gras ou maigre, s'il y a des arbres ou s'il n'y en a point. Ayez bon courage, et prenez des fruits du pays. C'était le temps des premiers raisins.
21 Ils montèrent, et ils explorèrent le pays, depuis le désert de Tsin jusqu'à Rehob, sur le chemin de Hamath.
22 Ils montèrent, par le midi, et ils allèrent jusqu'à Hébron, où étaient Ahiman, Schéschaï et Talmaï, enfants d'Anak. Hébron avait été bâtie sept ans avant Tsoan en Égypte.
23 Ils arrivèrent jusqu'à la vallée d'Eschcol, où ils coupèrent une branche de vigne avec une grappe de raisin, qu'ils portèrent à deux au moyen d'une perche; ils prirent aussi des grenades et des figues.
24 On donna à ce lieu le nom de vallée d'Eschcol, à cause de la grappe que les enfants d'Israël y coupèrent.
25 Ils furent de retour de l'exploration du pays au bout de quarante jours.
26 A leur arrivée, ils se rendirent auprès de Moïse et d'Aaron, et de toute l'assemblée des enfants d'Israël, à Kadès dans le désert de Paran. Ils leur firent un rapport, ainsi qu'à toute l'assemblée, et ils leur montrèrent les fruits du pays.
27 Voici ce qu'ils racontèrent à Moïse: Nous sommes allés dans le pays où tu nous as envoyés. A la vérité, c'est un pays où coulent le lait et le miel, et en voici les fruits.
28 Mais le peuple qui habite ce pays est puissant, les villes sont fortifiées, très grandes; nous y avons vu des enfants d'Anak.
29 Les Amalécites habitent la contrée du midi; les Héthiens, les Jébusiens et les Amoréens habitent la montagne; et les Cananéens habitent près de la mer et le long du Jourdain.
30 Caleb fit taire le peuple, qui murmurait contre Moïse. Il dit: Montons, emparons-nous du pays, nous y serons vainqueurs!
31 Mais les hommes qui y étaient allés avec lui dirent: Nous ne pouvons pas monter contre ce peuple, car il est plus fort que nous.
32 Et ils décrièrent devant les enfants d'Israël le pays qu'ils avaient exploré. Ils dirent: Le pays que nous avons parcouru, pour l'explorer, est un pays qui dévore ses habitants; tous ceux que nous y avons vus sont des hommes d'une haute taille;
33 et nous y avons vu les géants, enfants d'Anak, de la race des géants: nous étions à nos yeux et aux leurs comme des sauterelles.

Exploring Canaan
13 The Lord said to Moses, 2 “Send some men to explore(A) the land of Canaan,(B) which I am giving to the Israelites.(C) From each ancestral tribe(D) send one of its leaders.”
3 So at the Lord’s command Moses sent them out from the Desert of Paran. All of them were leaders of the Israelites.(E) 4 These are their names:
from the tribe of Reuben, Shammua son of Zakkur;
5 from the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat son of Hori;
6 from the tribe of Judah, Caleb son of Jephunneh;(F)
7 from the tribe of Issachar, Igal son of Joseph;
8 from the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea son of Nun;(G)
9 from the tribe of Benjamin, Palti son of Raphu;
10 from the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel son of Sodi;
11 from the tribe of Manasseh (a tribe of Joseph), Gaddi son of Susi;

17 When Moses sent them to explore Canaan,(K) he said, “Go up through the Negev(L) and on into the hill country.(M) 18 See what the land is like and whether the people who live there are strong or weak, few or many. 19 What kind of land do they live in? Is it good or bad? What kind of towns do they live in? Are they unwalled or fortified? 20 How is the soil? Is it fertile or poor? Are there trees in it or not? Do your best to bring back some of the fruit of the land.(N)” (It was the season for the first ripe grapes.)(O)
21 So they went up and explored the land from the Desert of Zin(P) as far as Rehob,(Q) toward Lebo Hamath.(R) 22 They went up through the Negev and came to Hebron,(S) where Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai,(T) the descendants of Anak,(U) lived. (Hebron had been built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)(V) 23 When they reached the Valley of Eshkol,[a](W) they cut off a branch bearing a single cluster of grapes. Two of them carried it on a pole between them, along with some pomegranates(X) and figs.(Y) 24 That place was called the Valley of Eshkol because of the cluster of grapes the Israelites cut off there. 25 At the end of forty days(Z) they returned from exploring the land.(AA)
Report on the Exploration
26 They came back to Moses and Aaron and the whole Israelite community at Kadesh(AB) in the Desert of Paran.(AC) There they reported to them(AD) and to the whole assembly and showed them the fruit of the land.(AE) 27 They gave Moses this account: “We went into the land to which you sent us, and it does flow with milk and honey!(AF) Here is its fruit.(AG) 28 But the people who live there are powerful, and the cities are fortified and very large.(AH) We even saw descendants of Anak(AI) there.(AJ) 29 The Amalekites(AK) live in the Negev; the Hittites,(AL) Jebusites(AM) and Amorites(AN) live in the hill country;(AO) and the Canaanites(AP) live near the sea and along the Jordan.(AQ)”
30 Then Caleb(AR) silenced the people before Moses and said, “We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it.”
31 But the men who had gone up with him said, “We can’t attack those people; they are stronger than we are.”(AS) 32 And they spread among the Israelites a bad report(AT) about the land they had explored. They said, “The land we explored devours(AU) those living in it. All the people we saw there are of great size.(AV) 33 We saw the Nephilim(AW) there (the descendants of Anak(AX) come from the Nephilim). We seemed like grasshoppers(AY) in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them.”

20 And what the land is, whether it be fat or lean, whether there be wood therein, or not. And be ye of good courage, and bring of the fruit of the land. Now the time was the time of the firstripe grapes.
21 So they went up, and searched the land from the wilderness of Zin unto Rehob, as men come to Hamath.
22 And they ascended by the south, and came unto Hebron; where Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the children of Anak, were. (Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)
23 And they came unto the brook of Eshcol, and cut down from thence a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they bare it between two upon a staff; and they brought of the pomegranates, and of the figs.
24 The place was called the brook Eshcol, because of the cluster of grapes which the children of Israel cut down from thence.
25 And they returned from searching of the land after forty days.
26 And they went and came to Moses, and to Aaron, and to all the congregation of the children of Israel, unto the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back word unto them, and unto all the congregation, and shewed them the fruit of the land.
27 And they told him, and said, We came unto the land whither thou sentest us, and surely it floweth with milk and honey; and this is the fruit of it.
28 Nevertheless the people be strong that dwell in the land, and the cities are walled, and very great: and moreover we saw the children of Anak there.
29 The Amalekites dwell in the land of the south: and the Hittites, and the Jebusites, and the Amorites, dwell in the mountains: and the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and by the coast of Jordan.
30 And Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it.
31 But the men that went up with him said, We be not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we.
32 And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had searched unto the children of Israel, saying, The land, through which we have gone to search it, is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of a great stature.
33 And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.
