(A)And all the children of Israel complained against Moses and Aaron, and the whole congregation said to them, “If only we had died in the land of Egypt! Or if only we had died in this wilderness! Why has the Lord brought us to this land to [a]fall by the sword, that our wives and (B)children should become victims? Would it not be better for us to return to Egypt?” So they said to one another, (C)“Let us select a leader and (D)return to Egypt.”

Then Moses and Aaron [b]fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel.

But Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had spied out the land, tore their clothes; and they spoke to all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying: (E)“The land we passed through to spy out is an exceedingly good land. If the Lord (F)delights in us, then He will bring us into this land and give it to us, (G)‘a land which flows with milk and honey.’ Only (H)do not rebel against the Lord, (I)nor fear the people of the land, for (J)they[c] are our bread; their protection has departed from them, (K)and the Lord is with us. Do not fear them.”

10 (L)And all the congregation said to stone them with stones. Now (M)the glory of the Lord appeared in the tabernacle of meeting before all the children of Israel.

Moses Intercedes for the People

11 Then the Lord said to Moses: “How long will these people (N)reject[d] Me? And how long will they not (O)believe Me, with all the [e]signs which I have performed among them? 12 I will strike them with the pestilence and disinherit them, and I will (P)make of you a nation greater and mightier than they.”

13 And (Q)Moses said to the Lord: (R)“Then the Egyptians will hear it, for by Your might You brought these people up from among them, 14 and they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land. They have (S)heard that You, Lord, are among these people; that You, Lord, are seen face to face and Your cloud stands above them, and You go before them in a pillar of cloud by day and in a pillar of fire by night. 15 Now if You kill these people as one man, then the nations which have heard of Your fame will speak, saying, 16 ‘Because the Lord was not (T)able to bring this people to the land which He swore to give them, therefore He killed them in the wilderness.’ 17 And now, I pray, let the power of my Lord be great, just as You have spoken, saying, 18 (U)‘The Lord is longsuffering and abundant in mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression; but He by no means clears the guilty, (V)visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation. 19 (W)Pardon the iniquity of this people, I pray, (X)according to the greatness of Your mercy, just (Y)as You have forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.”

And all the people of Israel (A)grumbled against Moses and Aaron. The whole congregation said to them, “Would that we had died in the land of Egypt! Or (B)would that we had died in this wilderness! Why is the Lord bringing us into this land, to fall by the sword? (C)Our wives and our little ones will become a prey. Would it not be better for us to go back to Egypt?” And they said to one another, (D)“Let us choose a leader and (E)go back to Egypt.”

Then (F)Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the people of Israel. (G)And Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had spied out the land, tore their clothes and said to all the congregation of the people of Israel, (H)“The land, which we passed through to spy it out, is an exceedingly good land. If (I)the Lord delights in us, he will bring us into this land and give it to us, (J)a land that flows with milk and honey. Only (K)do not rebel against the Lord. And (L)do not fear the people of the land, for (M)they are bread for us. Their protection is removed from them, and the Lord is with us; do not fear them.” 10 (N)Then all the congregation said to stone them with stones. But (O)the glory of the Lord appeared at the tent of meeting to all the people of Israel.

11 And the Lord said to Moses, “How long will this people (P)despise me? And how long will they not (Q)believe in me, in spite of all the signs that I have done among them? 12 I will strike them with the pestilence and disinherit them, and I (R)will make of you a nation greater and mightier than they.”

Moses Intercedes for the People

13 But (S)Moses said to the Lord, “Then the Egyptians will hear of it, for you brought up this people in your might from among them, 14 and they will tell the inhabitants of this land. (T)They have heard that you, O Lord, are in the midst of this people. For you, O Lord, are seen face to face, and (U)your cloud stands over them and you go before them, in a pillar of cloud by day and in a pillar of fire by night. 15 Now if you kill this people as one man, then the nations who have heard your fame will say, 16 ‘It is because the Lord (V)was not able to bring this people into the land that he swore to give to them that he has killed them in the wilderness.’ 17 And now, please let the power of the Lord be great as you have promised, saying, 18 (W)‘The Lord is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, forgiving iniquity and transgression, but he will by no means clear the guilty, (X)visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, to the third and the fourth generation.’ 19 Please (Y)pardon the iniquity of this people, according to the greatness of your steadfast love, just (Z)as you have forgiven this people, from Egypt until now.”

And all the sons of Israel (A)grumbled against Moses and Aaron; and the entire congregation said to them, “(B)If only we had died in the land of Egypt! Or even if we had died in this wilderness! Would it not be better for us to return to Egypt?” So they said to one another, “(E)Let’s appoint a leader and return to Egypt!”

(F)Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces in the presence of all the assembly of the congregation of the sons of Israel. And Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, of those who had spied out the land, tore their clothes; and they spoke to all the congregation of the sons of Israel, saying, “(G)The land which we passed through to spy out is an exceedingly good land. (H)If the Lord is pleased with us, then He will bring us into this land and give it to us—(I)a land which flows with milk and honey. Only (J)do not rebel against the Lord; and do not (K)fear the people of the land, for they will be our [a]prey. Moses Pleads for the People

11 (N)And the Lord said to Moses, “How long will this people be disrespectful to Me? And how long will (O)they not [c]believe in Me, despite all the signs that I have performed in their midst? 12 I will strike them with [d](P)plague and dispossess them, and I (Q)will make you into a nation greater and mightier than they.”

13 (R)But Moses said to the Lord, “Then the Egyptians will hear of it, for by Your strength You brought this people up from their midst, 14 and they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land. They have heard that You, Lord, are in the midst of this people, because (S)You, Lord, are seen eye to eye, while Your cloud stands over them; and You go before them in a pillar of cloud by day, and in a pillar of fire by night. 15 Now if You put this people to death [e]all at once, (T)then the nations who have heard of Your fame will [f]say, 16 ‘Since the Lord (U)could not bring this people into the land which He promised them by oath, He slaughtered them in the wilderness.’ 17 So now, please, let the power of the Lord be great, just as You have declared, saying, 18 (V)The Lord is slow to anger and abundant in mercy, forgiving wrongdoing and violation of His Law; but (W)He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished, (X)inflicting the [g]punishment of the fathers on the children [h]to the third and the fourth generations.’ 19 Please (Y)forgive the guilt of this people in accordance with the greatness of Your mercy, just as You also have forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.”
