Offerings of the Leaders

Now on (A)the day that Moses had finished setting up the tabernacle, he (B)anointed it and consecrated it with all its furnishings and the altar and all its utensils; he anointed them and consecrated them also. Then (C)the leaders of Israel, the heads of their fathers’ households, (D)made an offering (they were the leaders of the tribes; they were the ones who [a]were over the [b]numbered men). When they brought their offering before the Lord, six (E)covered carts and twelve oxen, a cart for every two of the leaders and an ox for each one, then they presented them before the tabernacle. Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Accept these things from them, that they may be [c]used in the service of the tent of meeting, and you shall give them to the Levites, to each man according to his service.” So Moses took the carts and the oxen and gave them to the Levites. Two carts and four oxen he gave to the sons of Gershon, according to (F)their service, and four carts and eight oxen he gave to the sons of Merari, according to (G)their service, under the [d]direction of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest. But he did not give any to the sons of Kohath because theirs was (H)the service of the holy objects, which they carried on the shoulder.

10 The leaders offered the dedication offering [e]for the altar [f]when (I)it was anointed, so the leaders offered their offering before the altar. 11 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Let them present their offering, one leader each day, for the dedication of the altar.”

12 Now the one who presented his offering on the first day was Nahshon the son of Amminadab, of the tribe of Judah; 13 and his offering was one silver [g](J)dish whose weight was one hundred and thirty shekels, one silver bowl of seventy shekels, (K)according to [h]the shekel of the sanctuary, both of them full of fine flour mixed with oil for a grain offering; 14 one gold pan of ten shekels, full of incense; 15 one [i]bull, one ram, one male lamb one year old, for a burnt offering; 16 (L)one male goat for a sin offering; 17 and for the sacrifice of peace offerings, two oxen, five rams, five male goats, five male lambs one year old. This was the offering of (M)Nahshon the son of Amminadab.

18 On the second day Nethanel the son of Zuar, leader of Issachar, presented an offering; 19 he presented as his offering one silver dish whose weight was one hundred and thirty shekels, one silver bowl of seventy shekels, according to the shekel of the sanctuary, both of them full of fine flour mixed with oil for a grain offering; 20 one gold pan of ten shekels, full of incense; 21 one bull, one ram, one male lamb one year old, for a burnt offering; 22 one male goat for a sin offering; 23 and for the sacrifice of (N)peace offerings, two oxen, five rams, five male goats, five male lambs one year old. This was the offering of Nethanel the son of Zuar.

24 On the third day it was Eliab the son of Helon, leader of the sons of Zebulun; 25 his offering was one silver dish whose weight was one hundred and thirty shekels, one silver bowl of seventy shekels, according to the shekel of the sanctuary, both of them full of fine flour mixed with oil for a grain offering; 26 one gold pan of ten shekels, full of incense; 27 one young bull, one ram, one (O)male lamb one year old, for a burnt offering; 28 one male goat for a sin offering; 29 and for the sacrifice of peace offerings, two oxen, five rams, five male goats, five male lambs one year old. This was the offering of Eliab the son of Helon.

30 On the fourth day it was Elizur the son of Shedeur, leader of the sons of Reuben; 31 his offering was one silver dish whose weight was one hundred and thirty shekels, one silver bowl of seventy shekels, according to the shekel of the sanctuary, both of them full of fine flour mixed with oil for a grain offering; 32 one gold pan of ten shekels, full of incense; 33 one bull, one ram, one (P)male lamb one year old, for a burnt offering; 34 one male goat for a sin offering; 35 and for the sacrifice of peace offerings, two oxen, five rams, five male goats, five male lambs one year old. This was the offering of Elizur the son of Shedeur.

36 On the fifth day it was Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai, leader of the children of Simeon; 37 his offering was one silver dish whose weight was one hundred and thirty shekels, one silver bowl of seventy shekels, according to the shekel of the sanctuary, both of them full of fine flour mixed with oil for a grain offering; 38 one gold pan of ten shekels, full of incense; 39 one bull, one ram, one male lamb one year old, for a burnt offering; 40 one male goat for a sin offering; 41 and for the sacrifice of peace offerings, two oxen, five rams, five male goats, five male lambs one year old. This was the offering of Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai.

42 On the sixth day it was (Q)Eliasaph the son of Deuel, leader of the sons of Gad; 43 his offering was one silver dish whose weight was one hundred and thirty shekels, one silver bowl of seventy shekels, according to the shekel of the sanctuary, both of them full of (R)fine flour mixed with oil for a grain offering; 44 one gold pan of ten shekels, full of incense; 45 (S)one bull, one ram, one male lamb one year old, for a burnt offering; 46 one male goat for a sin offering; 47 and for the sacrifice of peace offerings, two oxen, five rams, five male goats, five male lambs one year old. This was the offering of Eliasaph the son of Deuel.

48 On the seventh day it was (T)Elishama the son of Ammihud, leader of the sons of Ephraim; 49 his offering was one silver dish whose weight was one hundred and thirty shekels, one silver bowl of seventy shekels, according to the shekel of the sanctuary, both of them full of fine flour mixed with oil for a grain offering; 50 one gold pan of ten shekels, full of (U)incense; 51 (V)one bull, one ram, one male lamb one year old, for a burnt offering; 52 one male goat for a sin offering; 53 and for the sacrifice of peace offerings, two oxen, five rams, five male goats, five male lambs one year old. This was the offering of Elishama the son of Ammihud.

54 On the eighth day it was (W)Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur, leader of the sons of Manasseh; 55 his offering was one silver dish whose weight was one hundred and thirty shekels, one silver bowl of seventy shekels, according to the shekel of the sanctuary, both of them full of fine flour mixed with oil for a grain offering; 56 one gold pan of ten shekels, full of (X)incense; 57 one bull, one ram, one (Y)male lamb one year old, for a burnt offering; 58 one male goat for a sin offering; 59 and for the (Z)sacrifice of peace offerings, two oxen, five rams, five male goats, five male lambs one year old. This was the offering of Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur.

60 On the ninth day it was (AA)Abidan the son of Gideoni, leader of the sons of Benjamin; 61 his offering was one silver dish whose weight was one hundred and thirty shekels, one silver bowl of seventy shekels, according to the shekel of the sanctuary, both of them full of fine flour mixed with oil for a grain offering; 62 one gold pan of ten shekels, full of (AB)incense; 63 one bull, one ram, one male lamb one year old, for a burnt offering; 64 one male goat for a (AC)sin offering; 65 and for the sacrifice of (AD)peace offerings, two oxen, five rams, five male goats, five male lambs one year old. This was the offering of Abidan the son of Gideoni.

66 On the tenth day it was (AE)Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai, leader of the sons of Dan; 67 his offering was one silver dish whose weight was one hundred and thirty shekels, one silver bowl of seventy shekels, according to the (AF)shekel of the sanctuary, both of them full of fine flour mixed with oil for a grain offering; 68 one gold pan of ten shekels, full of (AG)incense; 69 one bull, one ram, one male lamb one year old, for a burnt offering; 70 one male goat for a sin offering; 71 and for the sacrifice of peace offerings, two oxen, five rams, five male goats, five male lambs one year old. This was the offering of Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai.

72 On the eleventh day it was (AH)Pagiel the son of Ochran, leader of the sons of Asher; 73 his offering was one silver dish whose weight was one hundred and thirty shekels, one silver bowl of seventy shekels, according to the shekel of the sanctuary, both of them full of fine flour mixed with oil for a grain offering; 74 one gold pan of ten shekels, full of (AI)incense; 75 one bull, one ram, one male lamb one year old, for a burnt offering; 76 one male goat for a sin offering; 77 and for the sacrifice of peace offerings, two oxen, five rams, five male goats, five male lambs one year old. This was the offering of Pagiel the son of Ochran.

78 On the twelfth day it was (AJ)Ahira the son of Enan, leader of the sons of Naphtali; 79 his offering was one (AK)silver dish whose weight was one hundred and thirty shekels, one silver bowl of seventy shekels, according to the shekel of the sanctuary, both of them full of fine flour mixed with oil for a grain offering; 80 one gold pan of ten shekels, full of incense; 81 one bull, one ram, one male lamb one year old, for a burnt offering; 82 one male goat for a sin offering; 83 and for the sacrifice of peace offerings, two oxen, five rams, five male goats, five male lambs one year old. This was the offering of Ahira the son of Enan.

84 This was (AL)the dedication offering [j]for the altar from the leaders of Israel [k]when (AM)it was anointed: twelve silver dishes, twelve silver bowls, twelve gold pans, 85 each silver dish weighing one hundred and thirty shekels and each bowl seventy; all the silver of the utensils was 2,400 shekels, according to the shekel of the sanctuary; 86 the twelve gold pans, full of incense, weighing ten shekels apiece, according to the (AN)shekel of the sanctuary, all the gold of the pans 120 shekels; 87 all the oxen for the burnt offering twelve bulls, all the rams twelve, the male lambs one year old with their grain offering twelve, and the male goats for a sin offering twelve; 88 and all the oxen for the sacrifice of peace offerings 24 bulls, all the rams 60, the male goats 60, the male lambs one year old 60. (AO)This was the dedication offering for the altar after it was anointed.

89 Now when (AP)Moses went into the tent of meeting to speak with Him, he heard the voice speaking to him from above (AQ)the [l]mercy seat that was on the ark of the testimony, from (AR)between the two cherubim, so He spoke to him.

The Seven Lamps

Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Speak to Aaron and say to him, ‘When you [m]mount the lamps, the seven lamps will (AS)give light in the front of the lampstand.’” Aaron therefore did so; he [n]mounted its lamps at the front of the lampstand, just as the Lord had commanded Moses. (AT)Now this was the workmanship of the lampstand, hammered work of gold; from its base to its flowers it was hammered work; (AU)according to the pattern which the Lord had shown Moses, so he made the lampstand.

Cleansing the Levites

Again the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Take the Levites from among the sons of Israel and (AV)cleanse them. Thus you shall do to them, for their [o]cleansing: sprinkle [p]purifying (AW)water on them, and let them [q](AX)use a razor over their whole [r]body and (AY)wash their clothes, and they will be clean. Then let them take a [s]bull with (AZ)its grain offering, fine flour mixed with oil; and a second [t]bull you shall take for a sin offering. So (BA)you shall present the Levites before the tent of meeting. (BB)You shall also assemble the whole congregation of the sons of Israel, 10 and present the Levites before the Lord; and the sons of Israel (BC)shall lay their hands on the Levites. 11 Aaron then shall [u]present the Levites before the Lord as a (BD)wave offering from the sons of Israel, that they may [v]qualify to perform the service of the Lord. 12 Now (BE)the Levites shall lay their hands on the heads of the bulls; then offer the one for a sin offering and the other for a burnt offering to the Lord, to make atonement for the Levites. 13 You shall have the Levites stand before Aaron and before his sons so as to present them as a wave offering to the Lord.

14 “Thus you shall separate the Levites from among the sons of Israel, and (BF)the Levites shall be Mine. 15 Then after that the Levites may go in to serve the tent of meeting. But you shall cleanse them and (BG)present them as a wave offering; 16 for they are (BH)wholly given to Me from among the sons of Israel. I have taken them for Myself (BI)instead of every first issue of the womb, the firstborn of all the sons of Israel. 17 For (BJ)every firstborn among the sons of Israel is Mine, among the men and among the animals; on the day that I struck down all the firstborn in the land of Egypt I sanctified them for Myself. 18 But I have taken the Levites instead of every firstborn among the sons of Israel. 19 (BK)I have given the Levites as [w]a gift to Aaron and to his sons from among the sons of Israel, to perform the service of the sons of Israel at the tent of meeting and to make atonement on behalf of the sons of Israel, so that there will be no (BL)plague among the sons of Israel by [x]their coming near to the sanctuary.”

20 Thus did Moses and Aaron and all the congregation of the sons of Israel to the Levites; according to all that the Lord had commanded Moses concerning the Levites, so the sons of Israel did to them. 21 (BM)The Levites, too, purified themselves from sin and washed their clothes; and Aaron presented them as a wave offering before the Lord. Aaron also made atonement for them to cleanse them. 22 Then after that the Levites went in to perform their service in the tent of meeting before Aaron and before his sons; just as the Lord had commanded Moses concerning the Levites, so they did to them.

Retirement

23 Now the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 24 “This is what applies to the Levites: from (BN)twenty-five years old and upward [y]they shall enter to perform service in the work of the tent of meeting. 25 But at the age of fifty years they shall [z]retire from service in the work and not work any more. 26 They may, however, [aa]assist their brothers in the tent of meeting, (BO)to keep an obligation, but they themselves shall do no work. Thus you shall deal with the Levites concerning their obligations.”

The Passover

Thus the Lord spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in (BP)the first month of the second year after they had come out of the land of Egypt, saying, “Now, let the sons of Israel observe the Passover at (BQ)its appointed time. On the fourteenth day of this month, [ab]at twilight, you shall observe it at its appointed time; you shall observe it according to all its statutes and according to all its ordinances.” So Moses [ac]told the sons of Israel to observe the Passover. (BR)They observed the Passover in the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month, at twilight, in the wilderness of Sinai; (BS)according to all that the Lord had commanded Moses, so the sons of Israel did. But there were some men who were (BT)unclean because of the [ad]dead person, so that they could not observe Passover on that day; so (BU)they came before Moses and Aaron on that day. Those men said to him, “Though we are unclean because of the [ae]dead person, why are we restrained from presenting the offering of the Lord at its appointed time among the sons of Israel?” Moses therefore said to them, “[af](BV)Wait, and I will listen to what the Lord will command concerning you.”

Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 10 “Speak to the sons of Israel, saying, ‘If any one of you or of your generations becomes unclean because of a dead [ag]person, or is on a distant journey, he may, however, observe the Passover to the Lord. 11 In the second month on the (BW)fourteenth day at twilight, they shall observe it; they (BX)shall eat it with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. 12 They (BY)shall leave none of it until morning, (BZ)nor break a bone of it; according to all the statute of the Passover they shall observe it. 13 (CA)But the man who is clean and is not on a journey, and yet [ah]neglects to observe the Passover, that [ai]person shall then be cut off from his people, for he did not present the offering of the Lord at its appointed time. That man (CB)will bear his sin. 14 (CC)If an alien sojourns among you and [aj]observes the Passover to the Lord, according to the statute of the Passover and according to its ordinance, so he shall do; you shall have (CD)one statute, both for the alien and for the native of the land.’”

The Cloud on the Tabernacle

15 Now on (CE)the day that the tabernacle was erected (CF)the cloud covered the tabernacle, the (CG)tent of the testimony, and (CH)in the evening it was like the appearance of fire over the tabernacle, until morning. 16 So it was continuously; (CI)the cloud would cover it by day, and the appearance of fire by night. 17 (CJ)Whenever the cloud was lifted from over the tent, afterward the sons of Israel would then set out; and in the place where the cloud settled down, there the sons of Israel would camp. 18 At the [ak]command of the Lord the sons of Israel would set out, and at the [al]command of the Lord they would camp; (CK)as long as the cloud settled over the tabernacle, they remained camped. 19 Even when the cloud lingered over the tabernacle for many days, [am]the sons of Israel would keep the Lord’s charge and not set out. 20 If [an]sometimes the cloud remained a few days over the tabernacle, (CL)according to the [ao]command of the Lord they remained camped. Then according to the [ap]command of the Lord they set out. 21 If [aq]sometimes the cloud [ar]remained from evening until morning, when the cloud was lifted in the morning, they would move out; or if it remained in the daytime and at night, whenever the cloud was lifted, they would set out. 22 Whether it was two days or a month or a year that the cloud lingered over the tabernacle, staying above it, the sons of Israel remained camped and did not set out; but (CM)when it was lifted, they did set out. 23 (CN)At the [as]command of the Lord they camped, and at the [at]command of the Lord they set out; they kept the Lord’s charge, according to the [au]command of the Lord through Moses.

Death Plot and Anointing

14 (A)Now (B)the Passover and Unleavened Bread were two days away; and the chief priests and the scribes (C)were seeking how to seize Him by stealth and kill Him; for they were saying, “Not during the festival, otherwise there might be a riot of the people.”

(D)While He was in (E)Bethany at the home of Simon the leper, and reclining at the table, there came a woman with an alabaster vial of very (F)costly perfume of pure [a]nard; and she broke the vial and poured it over His head. But some were indignantly remarking to one another, “Why has this perfume been wasted? For this perfume might have been sold for over three hundred [b]denarii, and the money given to the poor.” And they were scolding her. But Jesus said, “Let her alone; why do you bother her? She has done a good deed to Me. For you always have (G)the poor with you, and whenever you wish you can do good to them; but you do not always have Me. She has done what she could; (H)she has anointed My body beforehand for the burial. Truly I say to you, (I)wherever the gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be spoken of in memory of her.”

10 (J)Then Judas Iscariot, (K)who was one of the twelve, went off to the chief priests in order to [c]betray Him to them. 11 They were glad when they heard this, and promised to give him money. And he began seeking how to betray Him at an opportune time.

The Last Passover

12 (L)On the first day of (M)Unleavened Bread, when [d]the Passover lamb was being (N)sacrificed, His disciples *said to Him, “Where do You want us to go and prepare for You to eat the Passover?” 13 And He *sent two of His disciples and *said to them, “Go into the city, and a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him; 14 and wherever he enters, say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher says, “Where is My (O)guest room in which I may eat the Passover with My disciples?”’ 15 And he himself will show you a large upper room furnished and ready; prepare for us there.” 16 The disciples went out and came to the city, and found it just as He had told them; and they prepared the Passover.

17 (P)When it was evening He *came with the twelve. 18 As they were reclining at the table and eating, Jesus said, “Truly I say to you that one of you will [e]betray Me—[f]one who is eating with Me.” 19 They began to be grieved and to say to Him one by one, “Surely not I?” 20 And He said to them, It is one of the twelve, [g]one who dips with Me in the bowl. 21 For the Son of Man is to go just as it is written of Him; but woe to that man [h]by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good [i]for that man if he had not been born.”

The Lord’s Supper

22 (Q)While they were eating, He took some bread, and [j]after a (R)blessing He broke it, and gave it to them, and said, “Take it; this is My body.” 23 And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, and they all drank from it. 24 And He said to them, “This is My (S)blood of the (T)covenant, which is poured out for many. 25 Truly I say to you, I will never again drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”

26 (U)After singing a hymn, they went out to (V)the Mount of Olives.

27 (W)And Jesus *said to them, “You will all [k]fall away, because it is written, ‘(X)I will strike down the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered.’ 28 But after I have been raised, (Y)I will go ahead of you to Galilee.” 29 But Peter said to Him, “Even though all may [l]fall away, yet I will not.” 30 And Jesus *said to him, “Truly I say to you, that [m](Z)this very night, before (AA)a rooster crows twice, you yourself will deny Me three times.” 31 But Peter kept saying insistently, “Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You!” And they all were saying the same thing also.

Jesus in Gethsemane

32 (AB)They *came to a place named Gethsemane; and He *said to His disciples, “Sit here until I have prayed.” 33 And He *took with Him Peter and [n]James and John, and began to be very (AC)distressed and troubled. 34 And He *said to them, (AD)My soul is deeply grieved to the point of death; remain here and keep watch.” 35 And He went a little beyond them, and fell to the ground and began to pray that if it were possible, (AE)the hour might [o]pass Him by. 36 And He was saying, (AF)Abba! Father! All things are possible for You; remove this cup from Me; (AG)yet not what I will, but what You will.” 37 And He *came and *found them sleeping, and *said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Could you not keep watch for one hour? 38 (AH)Keep watching and praying that you may not come into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” 39 Again He went away and prayed, saying the same [p]words. 40 And again He came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy; and they did not know what to answer Him. 41 And He *came the third time, and *said to them, [q]Are you still sleeping and resting? It is enough; (AI)the hour has come; behold, the Son of Man is being [r]betrayed into the hands of sinners. 42 Get up, let us be going; behold, the one who betrays Me is at hand!”

Betrayal and Arrest

43 (AJ)Immediately while He was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, *came up [s]accompanied by a crowd with swords and clubs, who were from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. 44 Now he who was betraying Him had given them a signal, saying, “Whomever I kiss, He is the one; seize Him and lead Him away [t]under guard.” 45 After coming, Judas immediately went to Him, saying, “(AK)Rabbi!” and kissed Him. 46 They laid hands on Him and seized Him. 47 But one of those who stood by drew his sword, and struck the slave of the high priest and [u]cut off his ear. 48 And Jesus said to them, “Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me, as you would against a robber? 49 Every day I was with you (AL)in the temple teaching, and you did not seize Me; but this has taken place to fulfill the Scriptures.” 50 And they all left Him and fled.

51 A young man was following Him, wearing nothing but a linen sheet over his naked body; and they *seized him. 52 But he [v]pulled free of the linen sheet and escaped naked.

Jesus before His Accusers

53 (AM)They led Jesus away to the high priest; and all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes *gathered together. 54 Peter had followed Him at a distance, (AN)right into (AO)the courtyard of the high priest; and he was sitting with the [w]officers and (AP)warming himself at the [x]fire. 55 Now the chief priests and the whole [y](AQ)Council kept trying to obtain testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, and they were not finding any. 56 For many were giving false testimony against Him, but their testimony was not consistent. 57 Some stood up and began to give false testimony against Him, saying, 58 “We heard Him say, ‘(AR)I will destroy this [z]temple made with hands, and in three days I will build another made without hands.’” 59 Not even in this respect was their testimony consistent. 60 The high priest stood up and came forward and questioned Jesus, saying, “Do You not answer? [aa]What is it that these men are testifying against You?” 61 (AS)But He kept silent and did not answer. (AT)Again the high priest was questioning Him, and [ab]saying to Him, “Are You [ac]the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?” 62 And Jesus said, “I am; and you shall see (AU)the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power, and (AV)coming with the clouds of heaven.” 63 (AW)Tearing his clothes, the high priest *said, “What further need do we have of witnesses? 64 You have heard the (AX)blasphemy; how does it seem to you?” And they all condemned Him to be deserving of death. 65 Some began to (AY)spit at Him, and [ad](AZ)to blindfold Him, and to beat Him with their fists, and to say to Him, “(BA)Prophesy!” And the officers [ae]received Him with [af]slaps in the face.

Peter’s Denials

66 (BB)As Peter was below in (BC)the courtyard, one of the servant-girls of the high priest *came, 67 and seeing Peter (BD)warming himself, she looked at him and *said, “You also were with Jesus the (BE)Nazarene.” 68 But he denied it, saying, “I neither know nor understand what you are talking about.” And he (BF)went out onto the [ag]porch.[ah] 69 The servant-girl saw him, and began once more to say to the bystanders, “This is one of them!” 70 But again (BG)he denied it. And after a little while the bystanders were again saying to Peter, “Surely you are one of them, (BH)for you are a Galilean too.” 71 But he began to [ai]curse and swear, “I do not know this man you are talking about!” 72 Immediately a rooster crowed a second time. And Peter remembered how Jesus had made the remark to him, “Before (BI)a rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.” [aj]And he began to weep.
