Rules About Cleanliness

The Lord said to Moses, “Command the ·Israelites [L sons/T children of Israel] to send away from camp anyone with ·a harmful skin disease [T leprosy; C the term does not refer to modern leprosy (Hansen’s disease), but to various skin disorders; Lev. 13:2]. Send away anyone who gives off body fluid [Lev. 15:2] or who has become unclean by touching a dead body [Lev. 5:2; 21:11]. Send both men and women outside the camp so that they won’t spread the disease there, where I am living among you.” So ·Israel [L the sons/T children of Israel] obeyed the Lord’s command and sent those people outside the camp. They did just as the Lord had told Moses.

On Defilement

The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Command the Israelites to send away from the camp every leper and everyone who has a discharge, and whoever is defiled [that is, ceremonially unclean] by [coming in contact with] the dead. You shall send away both male and female; you shall send them outside the camp so that they will not defile their camp where I dwell in their midst.” The Israelites did so, and sent them outside the camp; just as the Lord had said to Moses, so the Israelites did.
