La labor de los levitas
4 El SEÑOR les dijo a Moisés y a Aarón: 2 «Hagan un censo de los coatitas que hay entre los levitas por grupos familiares y familias; 3 que tengan entre los 30 y 50 años de edad, y sean aptos para trabajar en la carpa del encuentro. 4 El trabajo de los coatitas en lo que tiene que ver con la carpa del encuentro será el de hacerse cargo del transporte de las cosas más sagradas.
5 »Cuando se movilice el campamento, Aarón y sus hijos deberán entrar a la carpa y quitar la cortina de la entrada. Luego cubrirán el cofre del pacto con ella, 6 y pondrán encima una cubierta de cuero de delfín. Después extenderán una tela morada sobre ella y le colocarán los palos para transportarla, 7 y extenderán también una tela morada sobre la mesa de la presencia y pondrán en ella los platos, las cucharas, los tazones y las jarras para las ofrendas de vino. El pan de la ofrenda permanente estará también ahí. 8 Extenderán una tela roja sobre esto, cubrirán la mesa con una cubierta de cuero de delfín y después le colocarán los palos para transportarla.
9 »Después tomarán una tela morada y cubrirán con ella el candelabro, sus lámparas, las tenazas, los platillos y todas las jarras de aceite utilizadas en la lámpara. 10 Luego pondrán esto y su equipo en una cubierta de cuero de delfín y colocarán todo eso sobre unos palos para cargarlo. 11 También extenderán una tela morada sobre el altar de oro, lo cubrirán con una cubierta de cuero de delfín y le pondrán sus palos para cargarlo.
12 »Después tendrán que tomar todas las piezas del equipo usado para servir en el lugar sagrado. Los pondrán en una tela morada, los cubrirán con cuero de delfín y después los colocarán sobre sus palos para cargarlo.
13 »Luego deberán limpiar las cenizas del altar y extender una tela morada sobre este. 14 Después pondrán sobre el altar todos los utensilios que se usan para el servicio, o sea las tenazas, los tenedores, las palas y los tazones, todo el equipo del altar. Sobre este deberán extender una cubierta de cuero de delfín y luego poner todo esto sobre sus palos para cargarlo.
15 »Aarón y sus hijos terminarán de cubrir todo el equipo sagrado y todos los objetos sagrados. Una vez el campamento esté listo para moverse, entonces los coatitas podrán venir a cargar todo esto. Pero ellos no deberán tocar las cosas sagradas para que no mueran. Los coatitas cargarán las cosas de la carpa del encuentro.
16 »Eleazar, hijo del sacerdote Aarón, estará a cargo del aceite para la lámpara, del incienso aromático, de la ofrenda diaria de cereal[a] y del aceite de consagrar. Él también será responsable del cuidado de toda la Carpa Sagrada y de todo lo que hay en ella. Responderá por las cosas sagradas y por sus utensilios».
17 Luego el SEÑOR les dijo a Moisés y a Aarón: 18 «No dejen que ninguno de los grupos familiares de los coatitas sea separado[b] de los levitas. 19 Ellos deberán hacer lo siguiente para que no mueran al tocar las cosas más sagradas: Aarón y sus hijos entrarán y le enseñarán a cada uno de ellos el trabajo que deben hacer y lo que tienen que cargar. 20 Los coatitas no deben intentar mirar las cosas sagradas ni siquiera por un instante porque si lo hacen morirán».
21 El SEÑOR le dijo a Moisés: 22 «Haz también un censo de los guersonitas por familias y por grupos familiares. 23 Cuenta a los que tengan entre los 30 y 50 años de edad, o sea todos los que sean aptos para trabajar en la carpa del encuentro.
24 »El trabajo de los guersonitas es empacar y mover. 25 Ellos transportarán las cortinas de la Carpa Sagrada, la carpa del encuentro y su cubierta y la cubierta de cuero de delfín que está encima de ella. También transportarán la cortina de la entrada de la carpa del encuentro. 26 Ellos deben transportar también las cortinas del patio, el armazón a la entrada de la puerta del patio que rodea la Carpa Sagrada y el altar, sus cuerdas y todos sus utensilios y accesorios necesarios para realizar su trabajo. 27 Aarón y sus hijos supervisarán todo el trabajo de los guersonitas, todo lo que muevan y empaquen. Tú deberás hacerlos responsables de cuidar todo lo que movilicen. 28 Ese es el trabajo de los guersonitas en la carpa del encuentro y lo que tienen a su cargo. Esto lo harán bajo la dirección de Itamar hijo del sacerdote Aarón.
29 »También haz un censo de los meraritas por grupos familiares y familias. 30 Cuenta a los que tengan entre los 30 y 50 años de edad, o sea todos los que sean aptos para trabajar en la carpa del encuentro. 31 En cuanto a su trabajo en la carpa del encuentro, ellos transportarán las tablas de la Carpa Sagrada, sus travesaños, postes y bases. 32 También los postes del patio alrededor, sus bases, estacas y cuerdas, todo su equipo. Haz una lista por nombre de todo lo que ellos tienen que cuidar y cargar. 33 Ese es el trabajo de los meraritas en lo que respecta a la carpa del encuentro. Esto lo harán bajo la dirección de Itamar, hijo del sacerdote Aarón».
34 Moisés, Aarón y los jefes de la comunidad hicieron el censo de los coatitas por sus grupos familiares y familias. 35 Contaron a todos los hombres entre 30 y 50 años de edad, o sea todos los aptos para trabajar en la carpa del encuentro. 36 El resultado del censo por grupos familiares fue de 2750 hombres. 37 Esos fueron los hombres contados de los grupos familiares coatitas para trabajar en la carpa del encuentro. 38 Se hizo también el censo de los guersonitas por grupos familiares y familias. 39 Contaron a todos los hombres entre 30 y 50 años de edad, o sea todos los aptos para trabajar en la carpa del encuentro. 40 El resultado del censo por grupos familiares fue de 2630. 41 Esos fueron los hombres contados de los grupos familiares guersonitas para trabajar en la carpa del encuentro. Moisés y Aarón los contaron conforme a lo ordenado por el SEÑOR a Moisés.
42 Los meraritas también fueron censados por grupos familiares y familias. 43 Contaron a todos los hombres entre los 30 y 50 años de edad, o sea todos los aptos para trabajar en la carpa del encuentro. 44 El resultado del censo por grupos familiares fue de 3200. 45 Esos fueron los hombres contados de los grupos familiares meraritas. Moisés y Aarón los contaron conforme a lo ordenado por el SEÑOR a Moisés.
46 Así pues, Moisés, Aarón y los jefes de la comunidad hicieron el censo de todos los levitas por grupos familiares y familias. 47 Contaron a todos los hombres entre 30 y 50 años de edad, o sea todos los aptos para trabajar, manejar y transportar todo lo de la carpa del encuentro. 48 El total de este censo fue de 8580 hombres. 49 Ese censo se hizo conforme a lo ordenado por el SEÑOR a Moisés. A cada uno se le dijo lo que debía hacer y lo que debía transportar, todo tal como el SEÑOR le mandó a Moisés.

4 And the Lord spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying,
2 Take the sum of the sons of Kohath from among the sons of Levi, after their families, by the house of their fathers,
3 From thirty years old and upward even until fifty years old, all that enter into the host, to do the work in the tabernacle of the congregation.
4 This shall be the service of the sons of Kohath in the tabernacle of the congregation, about the most holy things:
5 And when the camp setteth forward, Aaron shall come, and his sons, and they shall take down the covering vail, and cover the ark of testimony with it:
6 And shall put thereon the covering of badgers' skins, and shall spread over it a cloth wholly of blue, and shall put in the staves thereof.
7 And upon the table of shewbread they shall spread a cloth of blue, and put thereon the dishes, and the spoons, and the bowls, and covers to cover withal: and the continual bread shall be thereon:
8 And they shall spread upon them a cloth of scarlet, and cover the same with a covering of badgers' skins, and shall put in the staves thereof.
9 And they shall take a cloth of blue, and cover the candlestick of the light, and his lamps, and his tongs, and his snuffdishes, and all the oil vessels thereof, wherewith they minister unto it:
10 And they shall put it and all the vessels thereof within a covering of badgers' skins, and shall put it upon a bar.
11 And upon the golden altar they shall spread a cloth of blue, and cover it with a covering of badgers' skins, and shall put to the staves thereof:
12 And they shall take all the instruments of ministry, wherewith they minister in the sanctuary, and put them in a cloth of blue, and cover them with a covering of badgers' skins, and shall put them on a bar:
13 And they shall take away the ashes from the altar, and spread a purple cloth thereon:
14 And they shall put upon it all the vessels thereof, wherewith they minister about it, even the censers, the fleshhooks, and the shovels, and the basons, all the vessels of the altar; and they shall spread upon it a covering of badgers' skins, and put to the staves of it.
15 And when Aaron and his sons have made an end of covering the sanctuary, and all the vessels of the sanctuary, as the camp is to set forward; after that, the sons of Kohath shall come to bear it: but they shall not touch any holy thing, lest they die. These things are the burden of the sons of Kohath in the tabernacle of the congregation.
16 And to the office of Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest pertaineth the oil for the light, and the sweet incense, and the daily meat offering, and the anointing oil, and the oversight of all the tabernacle, and of all that therein is, in the sanctuary, and in the vessels thereof.
17 And the Lord spake unto Moses and unto Aaron saying,
18 Cut ye not off the tribe of the families of the Kohathites from among the Levites:
19 But thus do unto them, that they may live, and not die, when they approach unto the most holy things: Aaron and his sons shall go in, and appoint them every one to his service and to his burden:
20 But they shall not go in to see when the holy things are covered, lest they die.
21 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
22 Take also the sum of the sons of Gershon, throughout the houses of their fathers, by their families;
23 From thirty years old and upward until fifty years old shalt thou number them; all that enter in to perform the service, to do the work in the tabernacle of the congregation.
24 This is the service of the families of the Gershonites, to serve, and for burdens:
25 And they shall bear the curtains of the tabernacle, and the tabernacle of the congregation, his covering, and the covering of the badgers' skins that is above upon it, and the hanging for the door of the tabernacle of the congregation,
26 And the hangings of the court, and the hanging for the door of the gate of the court, which is by the tabernacle and by the altar round about, and their cords, and all the instruments of their service, and all that is made for them: so shall they serve.
27 At the appointment of Aaron and his sons shall be all the service of the sons of the Gershonites, in all their burdens, and in all their service: and ye shall appoint unto them in charge all their burdens.
28 This is the service of the families of the sons of Gershon in the tabernacle of the congregation: and their charge shall be under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.
29 As for the sons of Merari, thou shalt number them after their families, by the house of their fathers;
30 From thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old shalt thou number them, every one that entereth into the service, to do the work of the tabernacle of the congregation.
31 And this is the charge of their burden, according to all their service in the tabernacle of the congregation; the boards of the tabernacle, and the bars thereof, and the pillars thereof, and sockets thereof,
32 And the pillars of the court round about, and their sockets, and their pins, and their cords, with all their instruments, and with all their service: and by name ye shall reckon the instruments of the charge of their burden.
33 This is the service of the families of the sons of Merari, according to all their service, in the tabernacle of the congregation, under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.
34 And Moses and Aaron and the chief of the congregation numbered the sons of the Kohathites after their families, and after the house of their fathers,
35 From thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old, every one that entereth into the service, for the work in the tabernacle of the congregation:
36 And those that were numbered of them by their families were two thousand seven hundred and fifty.
37 These were they that were numbered of the families of the Kohathites, all that might do service in the tabernacle of the congregation, which Moses and Aaron did number according to the commandment of the Lord by the hand of Moses.
38 And those that were numbered of the sons of Gershon, throughout their families, and by the house of their fathers,

4 (C)“This is the service of the sons of Kohath in the tabernacle of meeting, relating to (D)the most holy things: 5 When the camp prepares to journey, Aaron and his sons shall come, and they shall take down (E)the covering veil and cover the (F)ark of the Testimony with it. 6 Then they shall put on it a covering of badger skins, and spread over that a cloth entirely of (G)blue; and they shall insert (H)its poles.
7 “On the (I)table of showbread they shall spread a blue cloth, and put on it the dishes, the pans, the bowls, and the [a]pitchers for pouring; and the (J)showbread[b] shall be on it. 8 They shall spread over them a scarlet cloth, and cover the same with a covering of badger skins; and they shall insert its poles. 9 And they shall take a blue cloth and cover the (K)lampstand of the light, (L)with its lamps, its wick-trimmers, its trays, and all its oil vessels, with which they service it. 10 Then they shall put it with all its utensils in a covering of badger skins, and put it on a carrying beam.

17 Then the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying: 18 “Do not cut off the tribe of the families of the Kohathites from among the Levites; 19 but do this in regard to them, that they may live and not die when they approach (V)the most holy things: Aaron and his sons shall go in and [d]appoint each of them to his service and his task. 20 (W)But they shall not go in to watch while the holy things are being covered, lest they die.”
Duties of the Sons of Gershon
21 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 22 “Also take a census of the sons of (X)Gershon, by their fathers’ house, by their families. 23 (Y)From thirty years old and above, even to fifty years old, you shall number them, all who enter to perform the service, to do the work in the tabernacle of meeting. 24 This is the (Z)service of the families of the Gershonites, in serving and carrying: 25 (AA)They shall carry the (AB)curtains of the tabernacle and the tabernacle of meeting with its covering, the covering of (AC)badger skins that is on it, the screen for the door of the tabernacle of meeting, 26 the screen for the door of the gate of the court, the hangings of the court which are around the tabernacle and altar, and their cords, all the furnishings for their service and all that is made for these things: so shall they serve.
27 “Aaron and his sons shall [e]assign all the service of the sons of the Gershonites, all their tasks and all their service. And you shall [f]appoint to them all their tasks as their duty. 28 This is the service of the families of the sons of Gershon in the tabernacle of meeting. And their duties shall be (AD)under the [g]authority of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.
Duties of the Sons of Merari
29 “As for the sons of (AE)Merari, you shall number them by their families and by their fathers’ house. 30 (AF)From thirty years old and above, even to fifty years old, you shall number them, everyone who enters the service to do the work of the tabernacle of meeting. 31 And (AG)this is (AH)what they must carry as all their service for the tabernacle of meeting: (AI)the boards of the tabernacle, its bars, its pillars, its sockets, 32 and the pillars around the court with their sockets, pegs, and cords, with all their furnishings and all their service; and you shall (AJ)assign to each man by name the items he must carry. 33 This is the service of the families of the sons of Merari, as all their service for the tabernacle of meeting, under the [h]authority of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.”

34 (AK)And Moses, Aaron, and the leaders of the congregation numbered the sons of the Kohathites by their families and by their fathers’ house, 35 from thirty (AL)years old and above, even to fifty years old, everyone who entered the service for work in the tabernacle of meeting; 36 and those who were numbered by their families were two thousand seven hundred and fifty. 37 These were the ones who were numbered of the families of the Kohathites, all who might serve in the tabernacle of meeting, whom Moses and Aaron numbered according to the commandment of the Lord by the hand of Moses.

17 The Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying, 18 “Let not the tribe of the clans of the Kohathites be destroyed from among the Levites, 19 but deal thus with them, that they may live and not die when they come near to (R)the most holy things: Aaron and his sons shall go in and appoint them each to his task and to his burden, 20 (S)but they shall not go in to look on the holy things even for a moment, lest they die.”
21 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 22 “Take a census of the sons of Gershon also, by their fathers' houses and by their clans. 23 (T)From thirty years old up to fifty years old, you shall list them, all who can (U)come to do duty, to do service in the tent of meeting. 24 This is the service of the clans of the Gershonites, in serving and bearing burdens: 25 (V)they shall carry (W)the curtains of the tabernacle and the tent of meeting with (X)its covering and the covering of goatskin that is on top of it and the screen for the entrance of the tent of meeting 26 and the hangings of the court and the screen for the entrance of the gate of the court that is around the tabernacle and the altar, and their cords and all the equipment for their service. And they shall do all that needs to be done with regard to them. 27 All the service of the sons of the Gershonites shall be at the command of Aaron and his sons, in all that they are to carry and in all that they have to do. And you shall assign to their charge all that they are to carry. 28 This is the service of the clans of the sons of the Gershonites in the tent of meeting, and their guard duty is to be (Y)under the direction of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.
29 “As for the sons of Merari, you shall list them by their clans and their fathers' houses. 30 (Z)From thirty years old up to fifty years old, you shall list them, everyone who can come on duty, to do the service of the tent of meeting. 31 And (AA)this is what they are charged to carry, as the whole of their service in the tent of meeting: the frames of the tabernacle, with its bars, pillars, and bases, 32 and the pillars around the court with their bases, pegs, and cords, with all their equipment and all their accessories. And you shall (AB)list by name the objects that they are required to carry. 33 This is the service of the clans of the sons of Merari, the whole of their service in the tent of meeting, (AC)under the direction of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.”
34 And Moses and Aaron and the chiefs of the congregation listed the sons of the Kohathites, by their clans and their fathers' houses, 35 (AD)from thirty years old up to fifty years old, everyone who could come on duty, for service in the tent of meeting; 36 and those listed by clans were 2,750. 37 (AE)This was the list of the clans of the Kohathites, all who served in the tent of meeting, whom Moses and Aaron listed according to the commandment of the Lord by Moses.
38 Those listed of the sons of Gershon, by their clans and their fathers' houses, 39 (AF)from thirty years old up to fifty years old, everyone who could come on duty for service in the tent of meeting— 40 those listed by their clans and their fathers' houses were 2,630. 41 (AG)This was the list of the clans of the sons of Gershon, all who served in the tent of meeting, whom Moses and Aaron listed according to the commandment of the Lord.
42 Those listed of the clans of the sons of Merari, by their clans and their fathers' houses, 43 (AH)from thirty years old up to fifty years old, everyone who could come on duty, for service in the tent of meeting— 44 those listed by clans were 3,200. 45 (AI)This was the list of the clans of the sons of Merari, whom Moses and Aaron listed according to the commandment of the Lord by Moses.
46 All those who were listed of the Levites, whom Moses and Aaron and the chiefs of Israel listed, by their clans and their fathers' houses, 47 (AJ)from thirty years old up to fifty years old, everyone who could come to do the service of ministry and the service of bearing burdens in the tent of meeting, 48 those listed were 8,580. 49 According to the commandment of the Lord through Moses they were listed, (AK)each one with his task of serving or carrying. Thus they were listed by him, (AL)as the Lord commanded Moses.
