Inheritance by Marriage
36 (A)Now the heads of the fathers’ households of the family of the sons of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of the sons of Joseph, came forward and spoke before Moses and before the leaders, the heads of the fathers’ households of the sons of Israel, 2 and they said, “The Lord commanded my lord to give the land by lot to the sons of Israel as an inheritance, and my lord (B)was commanded by the Lord to give the inheritance of our brother Zelophehad to his daughters. 3 But if they [a]marry one of the sons of the other tribes of the sons of Israel, their inheritance will be withdrawn from the inheritance of our fathers and will be added to the inheritance of the tribe to which they belong; so it will be withdrawn from our allotted inheritance. 4 And when the (C)jubilee of the sons of Israel takes place, then their inheritance will be added to the inheritance of the tribe to which they belong; so their inheritance will be withdrawn from the inheritance of the tribe of our fathers.”
5 Then Moses commanded the sons of Israel in accordance with the [b]word of the Lord, saying, “The tribe of the sons of Joseph is right in its statements. 6 (D)This is [c]what the Lord has commanded regarding the daughters of Zelophehad, saying, ‘Let them marry [d]whomever they wish; only they must marry within the family of the tribe of their father.’ 7 So (E)no inheritance of the sons of Israel will [e]be transferred from tribe to tribe, for the sons of Israel shall each [f]retain possession of the inheritance of the tribe of his fathers. 8 (F)And every daughter who comes into possession of an inheritance of any tribe of the sons of Israel shall marry one of the family of the tribe of her father, so that the sons of Israel may each possess the inheritance of his fathers. 9 So no inheritance will [g]be transferred from one tribe to another tribe, for the tribes of the sons of Israel shall each [h]retain possession of its own inheritance.”
10 Just as the Lord had commanded Moses, so the daughters of Zelophehad did: 11 (G)Mahlah, Tirzah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Noah, the daughters of Zelophehad married their uncles’ sons. 12 They married those from the families of the sons of Manasseh the son of Joseph, and their inheritance [i]remained with the tribe of the family of their father.
13 (H)These are the commandments and the ordinances which the Lord commanded to the sons of Israel through Moses in the plains of Moab, by the Jordan opposite Jericho.

36 And the chief fathers of the families of the children of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of the sons of Joseph, came near, and spake before Moses, and before the princes, the chief fathers of the children of Israel:
2 And they said, The Lord commanded my lord to give the land for an inheritance by lot to the children of Israel: and my lord was commanded by the Lord to give the inheritance of Zelophehad our brother unto his daughters.
3 And if they be married to any of the sons of the other tribes of the children of Israel, then shall their inheritance be taken from the inheritance of our fathers, and shall be put to the inheritance of the tribe whereunto they are received: so shall it be taken from the lot of our inheritance.
4 And when the jubile of the children of Israel shall be, then shall their inheritance be put unto the inheritance of the tribe whereunto they are received: so shall their inheritance be taken away from the inheritance of the tribe of our fathers.
5 And Moses commanded the children of Israel according to the word of the Lord, saying, The tribe of the sons of Joseph hath said well.
6 This is the thing which the Lord doth command concerning the daughters of Zelophehad, saying, Let them marry to whom they think best; only to the family of the tribe of their father shall they marry.
7 So shall not the inheritance of the children of Israel remove from tribe to tribe: for every one of the children of Israel shall keep himself to the inheritance of the tribe of his fathers.
8 And every daughter, that possesseth an inheritance in any tribe of the children of Israel, shall be wife unto one of the family of the tribe of her father, that the children of Israel may enjoy every man the inheritance of his fathers.
9 Neither shall the inheritance remove from one tribe to another tribe; but every one of the tribes of the children of Israel shall keep himself to his own inheritance.
10 Even as the Lord commanded Moses, so did the daughters of Zelophehad:
11 For Mahlah, Tirzah, and Hoglah, and Milcah, and Noah, the daughters of Zelophehad, were married unto their fathers brothers' sons:
12 And they were married into the families of the sons of Manasseh the son of Joseph, and their inheritance remained in the tribe of the family of their father.
13 These are the commandments and the judgments, which the Lord commanded by the hand of Moses unto the children of Israel in the plains of Moab by Jordan near Jericho.

Sobre la herencia de las mujeres
36 Los cabezas de familia del clan descendiente de Galaad, hijo de Maquir y nieto de Manasés —uno de los clanes de los descendientes de José— acudieron a Moisés y a los jefes de las casas patriarcales de los israelitas 2 diciéndoles:
— El Señor mandó a mi señor que asignase la tierra a los israelitas en posesión por sorteo; además el Señor ha mandado a mi señor que la herencia de nuestro pariente Selofjad pase a ser posesión de sus hijas. 3 Ahora bien, si ellas se casan con miembros de otras tribus israelitas, su herencia dejará de pertenecer a nuestra familia pasando a incrementar la heredad de la tribu a la que se unan, con lo cual quedaría reducida nuestra heredad. 4 E incluso cuando llegue para los israelitas el año jubilar, la parte de esas mujeres pasará a incrementar la heredad de la tribu de sus maridos; con ello, la parte de esas mujeres dejará de pertenecer a la heredad de la tribu de nuestra familia.
5 Entonces Moisés, por mandato del Señor, habló a los israelitas y dispuso lo siguiente:
— La solicitud de la tribu de los hijos de José es justa. 6 Esto es, pues, lo que el Señor ha mandado acerca de las hijas de Selofjad: pueden casarse con quienes les plazca, pero ha de ser con alguien del clan de la tribu de su padre, 7 para que la heredad de los israelitas no se transfiera de una tribu a otra, sino que cada israelita permanezca ligado a la heredad de su tribu paterna. 8 Cualquier hija que herede un patrimonio dentro de las tribus israelitas deberá casarse con alguien del clan de la tribu de su padre, para que los israelitas mantengan cada uno la posesión de la heredad paterna. 9 De esta manera no se transferirá el patrimonio de una tribu a otra, sino que cada una de las tribus de los israelitas estará ligada a su heredad.
10 Las hijas de Selofjad hicieron tal como el Señor había mandado a Moisés. 11 Majlá, Tirsá, Joglá, Milcá y Noá, hijas de Selofjad, se casaron con hijos de sus tíos paternos, 12 con lo que, al casarse dentro del clan de los descendientes de Manasés, hijo de José, su heredad permaneció dentro de la tribu a la que pertenecía el clan de su padre.
13 Estos son los preceptos y normas que mandó el Señor por medio de Moisés a los israelitas en las estepas de Moab, junto al Jordán, a la altura de Jericó.
