Instruction for Apportioning Canaan

34 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Command the sons of Israel and say to them, ‘When you enter (A)the land of Canaan, this is the land that shall fall to you as an inheritance, even the land of Canaan according to its borders. (B)Your southern [a]sector shall [b]extend from the wilderness of Zin along the side of Edom, and your southern border shall [c]extend from the end of the Salt Sea (C)eastward. Then your border shall turn direction from the south to the ascent of Akrabbim and [d]continue to Zin, and its [e]termination shall be to the south of (D)Kadesh-barnea; and it shall [f]reach Hazaraddar and [g]continue to Azmon. The border shall turn direction from Azmon to the brook of Egypt, and its termination shall be at (E)the sea.

‘As for the western border, you shall have the Great Sea, that is, its [h]coastline; this shall be your west border.

(F)And this shall be your north border: you shall draw your border line from the Great Sea to Mount Hor. You shall draw a line from Mount Hor to (G)the [i]Lebo-hamath, and the termination of the border shall be at Zedad; and the border shall proceed to Ziphron, and its termination shall be at Hazar-enan. This shall be your north border.

10 ‘For your eastern border you shall also draw a line from Hazar-enan to Shepham, 11 and the border shall go down from Shepham to (H)Riblah on the east side of Ain; and the border shall go down and reach to the [j]slope on the east side of the Sea of (I)Chinnereth. 12 And the border shall go down to the Jordan and its termination shall be at the Salt Sea. This shall be your land according to its borders all around.’”

13 So Moses commanded the sons of Israel, saying, “(J)This is the land that you are to apportion by lot among you as a possession, which the Lord has commanded to give to the nine and a half tribes. 14 (K)For the tribe of the sons of Reuben have received theirs according to their fathers’ households, and the tribe of the sons of Gad according to their fathers’ households, and the half-tribe of Manasseh have received their possession. 15 The two and a half tribes have received their possession across the Jordan opposite Jericho, eastward toward the sunrising.”

16 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 17 (L)These are the names of the men who shall apportion the land to you for inheritance: Eleazar the priest and Joshua the son of Nun. 18 You shall take one leader of every tribe to apportion the land for inheritance. 19 These are the names of the men: of the tribe of (M)Judah, (N)Caleb the son of Jephunneh. 20 Of the tribe of the sons of (O)Simeon, Samuel the son of Ammihud. 21 Of the tribe of (P)Benjamin, Elidad the son of Chislon. 22 Of the tribe of the sons of Dan a leader, Bukki the son of Jogli. 23 Of the sons of Joseph: of the tribe of the sons of Manasseh a leader, Hanniel the son of Ephod. 24 Of the tribe of the sons of Ephraim a leader, Kemuel the son of Shiphtan. 25 Of the tribe of the sons of Zebulun a leader, Elizaphan the son of Parnach. 26 Of the tribe of the sons of Issachar a leader, Paltiel the son of Azzan. 27 Of the tribe of the sons of Asher a leader, Ahihud the son of Shelomi. 28 Of the tribe of the sons of Naphtali a leader, Pedahel the son of Ammihud.” 29 These are those whom the Lord commanded to apportion the inheritance to the sons of Israel in the land of Canaan.

Cities for the Levites

35 (Q)Now the Lord spoke to Moses in the plains of Moab by the Jordan opposite Jericho, saying, “Command the sons of Israel that they give to the Levites from the inheritance of their possession cities to live in; and you shall give to the Levites pasture lands around the cities. The cities shall be theirs to live in; and their pasture lands shall be for their cattle and for their herds and for all their beasts.

“The pasture lands of the cities which you shall give to the Levites shall extend from the wall of the city [k]outward a thousand cubits around. You shall also measure outside the city on the east side two thousand cubits, and on the south side two thousand cubits, and on the west side two thousand cubits, and on the north side two thousand cubits, with the city in the center. This shall become theirs as pasture lands for the cities.

Cities of Refuge

The cities which you shall give to the Levites shall be the (R)six cities of refuge, which you shall give for the manslayer to flee to; and in addition to them you shall give forty-two cities. All the cities which you shall give to the Levites shall be (S)forty-eight cities, [l]together with their pasture lands. (T)As for the cities which you shall give from the possession of the sons of Israel, you shall take more from the larger and you shall take less from the smaller; each shall give some of his cities to the Levites in proportion to his possession which he inherits.”

Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 10 (U)Speak to the sons of Israel and say to them, ‘When you cross the Jordan into the land of Canaan, 11 (V)then you shall select for yourselves cities to be your (W)cities of refuge, that the manslayer who has [m]killed any person (X)unintentionally may flee there. 12 (Y)The cities shall be to you as a refuge from the avenger, so that the manslayer will not die until he stands before the congregation for [n]trial. 13 The cities which you are to give shall be your six cities of refuge. 14 You (Z)shall give three cities across the Jordan and three cities [o]in the land of Canaan; they are to be cities of refuge. 15 These six cities shall be for refuge for the sons of Israel, and for the alien and for the sojourner among them; that anyone who [p]kills a person (AA)unintentionally may flee there.

16 (AB)But if he struck him down with an iron object, so that he died, he is a murderer; the murderer shall surely be put to death. 17 If he struck him down with a stone in the hand, by which he will die, and as a result he died, he is a murderer; the murderer (AC)shall surely be put to death. 18 Or if he struck him with a wooden object in the hand, by which he might die, and as a result he died, he is a murderer; the murderer shall surely be put to death. 19 The blood avenger himself shall put the murderer to death; he shall put him to death when he meets him. 20 (AD)If he pushed him of hatred, or threw something at him (AE)lying in wait and as a result he died, 21 or if he struck him down with his hand in enmity, and as a result he died, the one who struck him shall surely be put to death, he is a murderer; the blood avenger shall put the murderer to death when he meets him.

22 (AF)But if he pushed him suddenly without enmity, or threw something at him without lying in wait, 23 or with any [q]deadly object of stone, and without seeing it dropped on him so that he died, while he was not his enemy nor seeking his injury, 24 then (AG)the congregation shall judge between the slayer and the blood avenger according to these ordinances. 25 The congregation shall deliver the manslayer from the hand of the blood avenger, and the congregation shall restore him to his city of refuge to which he fled; and he shall live in it until the death of the high priest who was anointed with the holy oil. 26 But if the manslayer at any time goes beyond the border of his city of refuge to which he may flee, 27 and the blood avenger finds him outside the border of his city of refuge, and the blood avenger kills the manslayer, he will not be guilty of blood 28 because he should have remained in his city of refuge until the death of the high priest. But after the death of the high priest the manslayer shall return to the land of his possession.

29 ‘These things shall be for a (AH)statutory ordinance to you throughout your generations in all your dwellings.

30 (AI)If anyone kills a person, the murderer shall be put to death at the [r]evidence of witnesses, but (AJ)no person shall be put to death on the testimony of one witness. 31 Moreover, you shall not take ransom for the life of a murderer who is guilty of death, but he shall surely be put to death. 32 You shall not take ransom for him who has fled to his city of refuge, that he may return to live in the land [s]before the death of the priest. 33 (AK)So you shall not pollute the land in which you are; for blood pollutes the land and no expiation can be made for the land for the blood that is shed on it, except (AL)by the blood of him who shed it. 34 You shall not (AM)defile the land in which you live, in the midst of which (AN)I dwell; for I the Lord am dwelling in the midst of the sons of Israel.’”

Inheritance by Marriage

36 (AO)And the heads of the fathers’ households of the family of the sons of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of the sons of Joseph, came near and spoke before Moses and before the leaders, the heads of the fathers’ households of the sons of Israel, and they said, “The Lord commanded my lord to give the land by lot to the sons of Israel as an inheritance, and my lord (AP)was commanded by the Lord to give the inheritance of Zelophehad our brother to his daughters. But if they [t]marry one of the sons of the other tribes of the sons of Israel, their inheritance will be withdrawn from the inheritance of our fathers and will be added to the inheritance of the tribe to which they belong; thus it will be withdrawn from our allotted inheritance. When the (AQ)jubilee of the sons of Israel [u]comes, then their inheritance will be added to the inheritance of the tribe to which they belong; so their inheritance will be withdrawn from the inheritance of the tribe of our fathers.”

Then Moses commanded the sons of Israel according to the [v]word of the Lord, saying, “The tribe of the sons of Joseph are right in their statements. (AR)This is [w]what the Lord has commanded concerning the daughters of Zelophehad, saying, ‘Let them marry [x]whom they wish; only they must marry within the family of the tribe of their father.’ Thus (AS)no inheritance of the sons of Israel shall [y]be transferred from tribe to tribe, for the sons of Israel shall each [z]hold to the inheritance of the tribe of his fathers. (AT)Every daughter who comes into possession of an inheritance of any tribe of the sons of Israel shall be wife to one of the family of the tribe of her father, so that the sons of Israel each may possess the inheritance of his fathers. Thus no inheritance shall [aa]be transferred from one tribe to another tribe, for the tribes of the sons of Israel shall each [ab]hold to his own inheritance.”

10 Just as the Lord had commanded Moses, so the daughters of Zelophehad did: 11 (AU)Mahlah, Tirzah, Hoglah, Milcah and Noah, the daughters of Zelophehad married their uncles’ sons. 12 They married those from the families of the sons of Manasseh the son of Joseph, and their inheritance [ac]remained with the tribe of the family of their father.

13 (AV)These are the commandments and the ordinances which the Lord commanded to the sons of Israel through Moses in the plains of Moab by the Jordan opposite Jericho.

Jesus Heals a Centurion’s Servant

(A)When He had completed all His discourse in the hearing of the people, (B)He went to Capernaum.

And a centurion’s slave, [a]who was highly regarded by him, was sick and about to die. When he heard about Jesus, (C)he sent some [b]Jewish elders asking Him to come and [c]save the life of his slave. When they came to Jesus, they earnestly implored Him, saying, “He is worthy for You to grant this to him; for he loves our nation and it was he who built us our synagogue.” Now Jesus started on His way with them; and when He was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends, saying to Him, “[d]Lord, do not trouble Yourself further, for I am not worthy for You to come under my roof; for this reason I did not even consider myself worthy to come to You, but just [e]say the word, and my [f]servant will be healed. For I also am a man placed under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to this one, ‘Go!’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come!’ and he comes, and to my slave, ‘Do this!’ and he does it.” Now when Jesus heard this, He marveled at him, and turned and said to the crowd that was following Him, “I say to you, (D)not even in Israel have I found such great faith.” 10 When those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the slave in good health.

11 Soon afterwards He went to a city called Nain; and His disciples were going along with Him, [g]accompanied by a large crowd. 12 Now as He approached the gate of the city, [h]a dead man was being carried out, the [i]only son of his mother, and she was a widow; and a sizeable crowd from the city was with her. 13 When (E)the Lord saw her, He felt compassion for her, and said to her, [j]Do not weep.” 14 And He came up and touched the coffin; and the bearers came to a halt. And He said, “Young man, I say to you, arise!” 15 The [k]dead man sat up and began to speak. And Jesus gave him back to his mother. 16 (F)Fear gripped them all, and they began (G)glorifying God, saying, “A great (H)prophet has arisen among us!” and, “God has [l]visited His people!” 17 (I)This report concerning Him went out all over Judea and in all the surrounding district.

A Deputation from John

18 (J)The disciples of John reported to him about all these things. 19 Summoning [m]two of his disciples, John sent them to (K)the Lord, saying, “Are You the [n]Expected One, or do we look for someone else?” 20 When the men came to Him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to You, to ask, ‘Are You the [o]Expected One, or do we look for someone else?’” 21 At that [p]very time He (L)cured many people of diseases and (M)afflictions and evil spirits; and He gave sight to many who were blind. 22 And He answered and said to them, “Go and report to John what you have seen and heard: the (N)blind receive sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the (O)poor have the gospel preached to them. 23 Blessed is he [q]who does not take offense at Me.”

24 When the messengers of John had left, He began to speak to the crowds about John, “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? 25 [r]But what did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft [s]clothing? Those who are splendidly clothed and live in luxury are found in royal palaces! 26 But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and one who is more than a prophet. 27 This is the one about whom it is written,

(P)Behold, I send My messenger [t]ahead of You,
Who will prepare Your way before You.’

28 I say to you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet he who is [u]least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.” 29 When all the people and the tax collectors heard this, they [v]acknowledged (Q)God’s justice, (R)having been baptized with (S)the baptism of John. 30 But the Pharisees and the [w](T)lawyers rejected God’s purpose for themselves, not having been baptized by [x]John.

31 “To what then shall I compare the men of this generation, and what are they like? 32 They are like children who sit in the market place and call to one another, and they say, ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not weep.’ 33 For John the Baptist has come (U)eating no bread and drinking no wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon!’ 34 The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Behold, a gluttonous man and a [y]drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and [z]sinners!’ 35 Yet wisdom (V)is vindicated by all her children.”

36 Now one of the Pharisees was requesting Him to [aa]dine with him, and He entered the Pharisee’s house and reclined at the table. 37 (W)And there was a woman in the city who was a [ab]sinner; and when she learned that He was reclining at the table in the Pharisee’s house, she brought an alabaster vial of perfume, 38 and standing behind Him at His feet, weeping, she began to wet His feet with her tears, and kept wiping them with the hair of her head, and kissing His feet and anointing them with the perfume. 39 Now when the Pharisee who had invited Him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were (X)a prophet He would know who and what sort of person this woman is who is touching Him, that she is a [ac]sinner.”

Parable of Two Debtors

40 And Jesus answered him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” And he [ad]replied, “Say it, Teacher.” 41 “A moneylender had two debtors: one owed five hundred [ae](Y)denarii, and the other fifty. 42 When they (Z)were unable to repay, he graciously forgave them both. So which of them will love him more?” 43 Simon answered and said, “I suppose the one whom he forgave more.” And He said to him, “You have judged correctly.” 44 Turning toward the woman, He said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you (AA)gave Me no water for My feet, but she has wet My feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45 You (AB)gave Me no kiss; but she, since the time I came in, has not ceased to kiss My feet. 46 (AC)You did not anoint My head with oil, but she anointed My feet with perfume. 47 For this reason I say to you, her sins, which are many, have been forgiven, for she loved much; but he who is forgiven little, loves little.” 48 Then He said to her, (AD)Your sins have been forgiven.” 49 Those who were reclining at the table with Him began to say [af]to themselves, “(AE)Who is this man who even forgives sins?” 50 And He said to the woman, (AF)Your faith has saved you; (AG)go in peace.”
