Numbers 34
New English Translation
The Southern Border of the Land
34 [a] Then the Lord spoke to Moses: 2 “Give these instructions[b] to the Israelites, and tell them: ‘When you enter Canaan, the land that has been assigned to you as an inheritance,[c] the land of Canaan with its borders, 3 your southern border[d] will extend from the wilderness of Zin along the Edomite border, and your southern border will run eastward to the extremity of the Salt Sea, 4 and then the border will turn from the south to the Scorpion Ascent,[e] continue to Zin, and then its direction[f] will be from the south to Kadesh Barnea. Then it will go to Hazar Addar and pass over to Azmon. 5 There the border will turn from Azmon to the Stream of Egypt, and then its direction is to the sea.[g]
The Western Border of the Land
6 “‘And for a western border[h] you will have the Great Sea.[i] This will be your western border.
The Northern Border of the Land
7 “‘And this will be your northern border: From the Great Sea you will draw a line to Mount Hor; 8 from Mount Hor you will draw a line to Lebo Hamath,[j] and the direction of the border will be to Zedad. 9 The border will continue to Ziphron, and its direction will be to Hazar Enan. This will be your northern border.
The Eastern Border of the Land
10 “‘For your eastern border you will draw a line from Hazar Enan to Shepham. 11 The border will run down from Shepham to Riblah, on the east side of Ain, and the border will descend and reach the eastern side of the Sea of Kinnereth.[k] 12 Then the border will continue down the Jordan River[l] and its direction will be to the Salt Sea. This will be your land by its borders that surround it.’”
13 Then Moses commanded the Israelites: “This is the land that you will inherit by lot, which the Lord has commanded to be given[m] to the nine-and-a-half tribes, 14 because the tribe of the Reubenites by their families,[n] the tribe of the Gadites by their families, and the half-tribe of Manasseh have received their inheritance. 15 The two-and-a-half tribes have received their inheritance on this side of the Jordan, east of Jericho, toward the sunrise.”
Appointed Officials
16 The Lord said to Moses: 17 “These are the names of the men who are to allocate the land to you as an inheritance:[o] Eleazar the priest and Joshua son of Nun. 18 You must take one leader from every[p] tribe to assist in allocating the land as an inheritance.[q] 19 These are the names of the men: from the tribe of Judah, Caleb son of Jephunneh; 20 from the tribe of the Simeonites, Shemuel son of Ammihud; 21 from the tribe of Benjamin, Elidad son of Kislon; 22 and from the tribe of the Danites, a leader, Bukki son of Jogli. 23 From the Josephites, Hanniel son of Ephod, a leader from the tribe of Manasseh; 24 from the tribe of the Ephraimites, a leader, Kemuel son of Shiphtan; 25 from the tribe of the Zebulunites, a leader, Elizaphan son of Parnach; 26 from the tribe of the Issacharites, a leader, Paltiel son of Azzan; 27 from the tribe of the Asherites, a leader, Ahihud son of Shelomi; 28 and from the tribe of the Naphtalites, a leader, Pedahel son of Ammihud.” 29 These are the ones whom the Lord commanded to divide up the inheritance among the Israelites in the land of Canaan.
Footnotes
- Numbers 34:1 sn This chapter falls into several sections: the south (vv. 1-5), the west (v. 6), the north (vv. 7-9), the east (vv. 10-15), and then a list of appointed officials (vv. 16-29).
- Numbers 34:2 tn Or “command.”
- Numbers 34:2 tn Heb “this is the land that will fall to you as an inheritance.”
- Numbers 34:3 tn The expression refers to the corner or extremity of the Negev, the South.
- Numbers 34:4 tn Or “the Ascent of Scorpions” (עַקְרַבִּים [ʿaqrabbim] means “scorpions” in Hebrew).
- Numbers 34:4 tn Heb “its going forth,” or the way it runs.
- Numbers 34:5 sn That is, the Mediterranean.
- Numbers 34:6 tn The word for west is simply “sea,” because the sea is west of Israel.
- Numbers 34:6 sn That is, the Mediterranean Sea (also in the following verse).
- Numbers 34:8 tn Or “to the entrance to Hamath.”
- Numbers 34:11 tn Or “the Sea of Galilee” (so NLT); NCV, TEV, CEV “Lake Galilee.”sn The word means “harp.” The lake (or sea) of Galilee was so named because it is shaped somewhat like a harp.
- Numbers 34:12 tn The word “River” is not in the Hebrew text, but has been supplied in the translation for clarity.
- Numbers 34:13 tn The infinitive forms the direct object of what the Lord commanded. It actually means “to give,” but without an expressed subject may be made passive.
- Numbers 34:14 tn Heb “the house of their fathers.” So also a little later in this verse.
- Numbers 34:17 tn The verb can be translated simply as “divide,” but it has more the idea of allocate as an inheritance, the related noun being “inheritance.”
- Numbers 34:18 tn This sense is created by repetition: “one leader, one leader from the tribe.”
- Numbers 34:18 tn The sentence simply uses לִנְחֹל (linkhol, “to divide, apportion”). It has been taken already to mean “allocate as an inheritance.” Here “assist” may be added since Joshua and Eleazar had the primary work.
Numbers 34
Douay-Rheims 1899 American Edition
34 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:
2 Command the children of Israel, and then shalt say to them: When you are entered into the land of Chanaan, and it shall be fallen into your possession by lot, it shall be bounded by these limits:
3 The south side shall begin from the wilderness of Sin, which is by Edom: and shall have the most salt sea for its furthest limits eastward:
4 Which limits shall go round on the south side by the ascent of the Scorpion and so into Senna, and reach toward the south as far as Cadesbarne, from whence the frontiers shall go out to the town called Adar, and shall reach as far as Asemona.
5 And the limits shall fetch a compass from Asemona to the torrent of Egypt, and shall end in the shore of the great sea.
6 And the west side shall begin from the great sea, and the same shall be the end thereof.
7 But toward the north side the borders shall begin from the great sea, reaching to the most high mountain,
8 From which they shall come to Emath, as far as the borders of Sedada:
9 And the limits shall go as far as Zephrona, and the village of Enan. These shall be the borders on the north side.
10 From thence they shall mark out the bounds towards the east side from the village of Enan unto Sephama.
11 And from Sephama the bounds shall go down to Rebla over against the fountain of Daphnis: from thence they shall come eastward to the sea of Cenereth,
12 And shall reach as far as the Jordan, and at the last shall be closed in by the most salt sea. This shall be your land with its borders round about.
13 And Moses commanded the children of Israel, saying: This shall be the land which you shall possess by lot, and which the Lord hath commanded to be given to the nine tribes, and to the half tribe.
14 For the tribe of the children of Ruben by their families, and the tribe of the children of Gad according to the number of their kindreds, and half of the tribe of Manasses,
15 That is, two tribes and a half, have received their portion beyond the Jordan over against Jericho at the east side.
16 And the Lord said to Moses:
17 These are the names of the men, that shall divide the land unto you: Eleazar the priest, and Josue the son of Nun,
18 And one prince of every tribe,
19 Whose names are these: Of the tribe of Juda, Caleb the son of Jephone.
20 Of the tribe of Simeon, Samuel the son of Ammiud.
21 Of the tribe of Benjamin, Elidad the son of Chaselon.
22 Of the tribe of the children of Dan, Bocci the son of Jogli.
23 Of the children of Joseph of the tribe of Manasses, Hanniel the son of Ephod.
24 Of the tribe of Ephraim, Camuel the son of Sephtan.
25 Of the tribe of Zabulon, Elisaphan the son of Pharnach.
26 Of the tribe of Issachar, Phaltiel the prince, the son of Ozan.
27 Of the tribe of Aser, Ahiud the son of Salomi.
28 Of the tribe of Nephtali: Phedael the son of Ammiud.
29 These are they whom the Lord hath commanded to divide the land of Chanaan to the children of Israel.
