Zelophehad’s Daughters^(A)

27 The daughters of Zelophehad^(B) son of Hepher,^(C) the son of Gilead,^(D) the son of Makir,^(E) the son of Manasseh, belonged to the clans of Manasseh son of Joseph. The names of the daughters were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milkah and Tirzah. They came forward ²and stood before Moses,^(F) Eleazar the priest, the leaders^(G) and the whole assembly at the entrance to the tent of meeting^(H) and said, ³“Our father died in the wilderness.^(I) He was not among Korah’s followers, who banded together against the Lord,^(J) but he died for his own sin and left no sons.^(K) ⁴Why should our father’s name disappear from his clan because he had no son? Give us property among our father’s relatives.”

⁵So Moses brought their case^(L) before the Lord,^(M) ⁶and the Lord said to him, ⁷“What Zelophehad’s daughters are saying is right. You must certainly give them property as an inheritance^(N) among their father’s relatives and give their father’s inheritance to them.^(O)

⁸“Say to the Israelites, ‘If a man dies and leaves no son, give his inheritance to his daughter. ⁹If he has no daughter, give his inheritance to his brothers. ¹⁰If he has no brothers, give his inheritance to his father’s brothers. ¹¹If his father had no brothers, give his inheritance to the nearest relative in his clan, that he may possess it. This is to have the force of law^(P) for the Israelites, as the Lord commanded Moses.’”

Joshua to Succeed Moses

¹²Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go up this mountain^(Q) in the Abarim Range^(R) and see the land^(S) I have given the Israelites.^(T) ¹³After you have seen it, you too will be gathered to your people,^(U) as your brother Aaron^(V) was, ¹⁴for when the community rebelled at the waters in the Desert of Zin,^(W) both of you disobeyed my command to honor me as holy^(X) before their eyes.” (These were the waters of Meribah^(Y) Kadesh, in the Desert of Zin.)

¹⁵Moses said to the Lord, ¹⁶“May the Lord, the God who gives breath to all living things,^(Z) appoint someone over this community ¹⁷to go out and come in before them, one who will lead them out and bring them in, so the Lord’s people will not be like sheep without a shepherd.”^(AA)

¹⁸So the Lord said to Moses, “Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit of leadership,^[a]^(AB) and lay your hand on him.^(AC) ¹⁹Have him stand before Eleazar the priest and the entire assembly and commission him^(AD) in their presence.^(AE) ²⁰Give him some of your authority so the whole Israelite community will obey him.^(AF) ²¹He is to stand before Eleazar the priest, who will obtain decisions for him by inquiring^(AG) of the Urim^(AH) before the Lord. At his command he and the entire community of the Israelites will go out, and at his command they will come in.”

²²Moses did as the Lord commanded him. He took Joshua and had him stand before Eleazar the priest and the whole assembly. ²³Then he laid his hands on him and commissioned him,^(AI) as the Lord instructed through Moses.

A Prophecy Against Damascus

17 A prophecy^(A) against Damascus:^(B)

“See, Damascus will no longer be a city
    but will become a heap of ruins.^(C)
²The cities of Aroer^(D) will be deserted
    and left to flocks,^(E) which will lie down,^(F)
    with no one to make them afraid.^(G)
³The fortified^(H) city will disappear from Ephraim,
    and royal power from Damascus;
the remnant of Aram will be
    like the glory^(I) of the Israelites,”^(J)
declares the Lord Almighty.

⁴“In that day^(K) the glory^(L) of Jacob will fade;
    the fat of his body will waste^(M) away.
⁵It will be as when reapers harvest the standing grain,
    gathering^(N) the grain in their arms—
as when someone gleans heads of grain^(O)
    in the Valley of Rephaim.^(P)
⁶Yet some gleanings will remain,^(Q)
    as when an olive tree is beaten,^(R)
leaving two or three olives on the topmost branches,
    four or five on the fruitful boughs,”
declares the Lord, the God of Israel.

⁷In that day^(S) people will look^(T) to their Maker^(U)
    and turn their eyes to the Holy One^(V) of Israel.
⁸They will not look to the altars,^(W)
    the work of their hands,^(X)
and they will have no regard for the Asherah poles^[a]^(Y)
    and the incense altars their fingers^(Z) have made.

⁹In that day their strong cities, which they left because of the Israelites, will be like places abandoned to thickets and undergrowth.^(AA) And all will be desolation.

¹⁰You have forgotten^(AB) God your Savior;^(AC)
    you have not remembered the Rock,^(AD) your fortress.^(AE)
Therefore, though you set out the finest plants
    and plant imported vines,^(AF)
¹¹though on the day you set them out, you make them grow,
    and on the morning^(AG) when you plant them, you bring them to bud,
yet the harvest^(AH) will be as nothing^(AI)
    in the day of disease and incurable^(AJ) pain.^(AK)

¹²Woe to the many nations that rage^(AL)—
    they rage like the raging sea!^(AM)
Woe to the peoples who roar^(AN)—
    they roar like the roaring of great waters!^(AO)
¹³Although the peoples roar^(AP) like the roar of surging waters,
    when he rebukes^(AQ) them they flee^(AR) far away,
driven before the wind like chaff^(AS) on the hills,
    like tumbleweed before a gale.^(AT)
¹⁴In the evening, sudden^(AU) terror!^(AV)
    Before the morning, they are gone!^(AW)
This is the portion of those who loot us,
    the lot of those who plunder us.

¹Lord, remember David
and all his self-denial.^(B)

²He swore an oath to the Lord,
    he made a vow to the Mighty One of Jacob:^(C)
³“I will not enter my house^(D)
    or go to my bed,
⁴I will allow no sleep to my eyes
    or slumber to my eyelids,
⁵till I find a place^(E) for the Lord,
    a dwelling for the Mighty One of Jacob.”

⁶We heard it in Ephrathah,^(F)
    we came upon it in the fields of Jaar:^[a]^(G)
⁷“Let us go to his dwelling place,^(H)
    let us worship at his footstool,^(I) saying,
⁸‘Arise, Lord,^(J) and come to your resting place,
    you and the ark of your might.
⁹May your priests be clothed with your righteousness;^(K)
    may your faithful people^(L) sing for joy.’”

¹⁰For the sake of your servant David,
do not reject your anointed one.

¹¹The Lord swore an oath to David,^(M)
    a sure oath he will not revoke:
“One of your own descendants^(N)
    I will place on your throne.
¹²If your sons keep my covenant^(O)
    and the statutes I teach them,
then their sons will sit
    on your throne^(P) for ever and ever.”

¹³For the Lord has chosen Zion,^(Q)
    he has desired it for his dwelling,^(R) saying,
¹⁴“This is my resting place for ever and ever;^(S)
    here I will sit enthroned,^(T) for I have desired it.
¹⁵I will bless her with abundant provisions;
    her poor I will satisfy with food.^(U)
¹⁶I will clothe her priests^(V) with salvation,
    and her faithful people will ever sing for joy.^(W)

¹⁷“Here I will make a horn^[b] grow^(X) for David
and set up a lamp^(Y) for my anointed one.^(Z)
¹⁸I will clothe his enemies with shame,^(AA)
