Balak Sends for Balaam
22 Then (A)the children of Israel moved, and camped in the plains of Moab on the side of the Jordan across from Jericho.
2 Now (B)Balak the son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites. 3 And (C)Moab was exceedingly afraid of the people because they were many, and Moab was sick with dread because of the children of Israel. 4 So Moab said to (D)the elders of Midian, “Now this company will [a]lick up everything around us, as an ox licks up the grass of the field.” And Balak the son of Zippor was king of the Moabites at that time. 5 Then (E)he sent messengers to Balaam the son of Beor at (F)Pethor, which is near [b]the River in the land of [c]the sons of his people, to call him, saying: “Look, a people has come from Egypt. See, they cover the face of the earth, and are settling next to me! 6 (G)Therefore please come at once, (H)curse this people for me, for they are too mighty for me. Perhaps I shall be able to defeat them and drive them out of the land, for I know that he whom you bless is blessed, and he whom you curse is cursed.”
7 So the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian departed with (I)the diviner’s fee in their hand, and they came to Balaam and spoke to him the words of Balak. 8 And he said to them, (J)“Lodge here tonight, and I will bring back word to you, as the Lord speaks to me.” So the princes of Moab stayed with Balaam.
9 (K)Then God came to Balaam and said, “Who are these men with you?”
10 So Balaam said to God, “Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, has sent to me, saying, 11 ‘Look, a people has come out of Egypt, and they cover the face of the earth. Come now, curse them for me; perhaps I shall be able to overpower them and drive them out.’ ”
12 And God said to Balaam, “You shall not go with them; you shall not curse the people, for (L)they are blessed.”
13 So Balaam rose in the morning and said to the princes of Balak, “Go back to your land, for the Lord has refused to give me permission to go with you.”
14 And the princes of Moab rose and went to Balak, and said, “Balaam refuses to come with us.”
15 Then Balak again sent princes, more numerous and more [d]honorable than they. 16 And they came to Balaam and said to him, “Thus says Balak the son of Zippor: ‘Please let nothing hinder you from coming to me; 17 for I will certainly (M)honor you greatly, and I will do whatever you say to me. (N)Therefore please come, curse this people for me.’ ”
18 Then Balaam answered and said to the servants of Balak, (O)“Though Balak were to give me his house full of silver and gold, (P)I could not go beyond the word of the Lord my God, to do less or more. 19 Now therefore, please, you also (Q)stay here tonight, that I may know what more the Lord will say to me.”
20 (R)And God came to Balaam at night and said to him, “If the men come to call you, rise and go with them; but (S)only the word which I speak to you—that you shall do.” 21 So Balaam rose in the morning, saddled his donkey, and went with the princes of Moab.
Balaam, the Donkey, and the Angel
22 Then God’s anger was aroused because he went, (T)and the Angel of the Lord took His stand in the way as an adversary against him. And he was riding on his donkey, and his two servants were with him. 23 Now (U)the donkey saw the Angel of the Lord standing in the way with His drawn sword in His hand, and the donkey turned aside out of the way and went into the field. So Balaam struck the donkey to turn her back onto the road. 24 Then the Angel of the Lord stood in a narrow path between the vineyards, with a wall on this side and a wall on that side. 25 And when the donkey saw the Angel of the Lord, she pushed herself against the wall and crushed Balaam’s foot against the wall; so he struck her again. 26 Then the Angel of the Lord went further, and stood in a narrow place where there was no way to turn either to the right hand or to the left. 27 And when the donkey saw the Angel of the Lord, she lay down under Balaam; so Balaam’s anger was aroused, and he struck the donkey with his staff.
28 Then the Lord (V)opened the mouth of the donkey, and she said to Balaam, “What have I done to you, that you have struck me these three times?”
29 And Balaam said to the donkey, “Because you have [e]abused me. I wish there were a sword in my hand, (W)for now I would kill you!”
30 (X)So the donkey said to Balaam, “Am I not your donkey on which you have ridden, ever since I became yours, to this day? Was I ever [f]disposed to do this to you?”
And he said, “No.”
31 Then the Lord (Y)opened Balaam’s eyes, and he saw the Angel of the Lord standing in the way with His drawn sword in His hand; and he bowed his head and fell flat on his face. 32 And the Angel of the Lord said to him, “Why have you struck your donkey these three times? Behold, I have come out [g]to stand against you, because your way is (Z)perverse[h] before Me. 33 The donkey saw Me and turned aside from Me these three times. If she had not turned aside from Me, surely I would also have killed you by now, and let her live.”
34 And Balaam said to the Angel of the Lord, (AA)“I have sinned, for I did not know You stood in the way against me. Now therefore, if it [i]displeases You, I will turn back.”
35 Then the Angel of the Lord said to Balaam, “Go with the men, (AB)but only the word that I speak to you, that you shall speak.” So Balaam went with the princes of Balak.
36 Now when Balak heard that Balaam was coming, (AC)he went out to meet him at the city of Moab, (AD)which is on the border at the Arnon, the boundary of the territory. 37 Then Balak said to Balaam, “Did I not earnestly send to you, calling for you? Why did you not come to me? Am I not able (AE)to honor you?”
38 And Balaam said to Balak, “Look, I have come to you! Now, have I any power at all to say anything? (AF)The word that God puts in my mouth, that I must speak.” 39 So Balaam went with Balak, and they came to Kirjath Huzoth. 40 Then Balak offered oxen and sheep, and he sent some to Balaam and to the princes who were with him.
Balaam’s First Prophecy
41 So it was, the next day, that Balak took Balaam and brought him up to the (AG)high places of Baal, that from there he might observe [j]the extent of the people.

Balac e Balaam
22 (A)Poi i figli d’Israele partirono e si accamparono nelle pianure di Moab, oltre il Giordano di Gerico.
2 Balac, figlio di Sippor, vide tutto quello che Israele aveva fatto agli Amorei, 3 e Moab ebbe grande paura di questo popolo, che era così numeroso; Moab fu preso dall’angoscia a causa dei figli d’Israele. 4 Perciò Moab disse agli anziani di Madian: «Ora questa moltitudine divorerà tutto ciò che è intorno a noi, come il bue divora l’erba dei campi». In quel tempo Balac, figlio di Sippor, era re di Moab. 5 Egli mandò ambasciatori da Balaam, figlio di Beor, a Petor, che sta sul fiume[a], suo paese d’origine, per chiamarlo e dirgli: «Ecco, un popolo è uscito dall’Egitto; esso ricopre la faccia della terra e si è stabilito di fronte a me; 6 vieni dunque, te ne prego, e maledicimi questo popolo, poiché è troppo potente per me; forse così riusciremo a sconfiggerlo e potrò cacciarlo via dal paese; poiché so che chi tu benedici è benedetto, e chi tu maledici è maledetto».
7 Gli anziani di Moab e gli anziani di Madian partirono portando in mano la ricompensa per l’indovino; arrivati da Balaam, gli riferirono le parole di Balac. 8 Balaam disse loro: «Alloggiate qui stanotte; e vi darò la risposta secondo quello che mi dirà il Signore». E i prìncipi di Moab stettero da Balaam.
9 Dio si avvicinò a Balaam e gli disse: «Chi sono questi uomini che stanno da te?» 10 Balaam rispose a Dio: «Balac, figlio di Sippor, re di Moab, mi ha mandato a dire: 11 “Ecco, il popolo che è uscito dall’Egitto ricopre la faccia della terra; ora vieni a maledirmelo; forse riuscirò così a combatterlo e potrò cacciarlo via”». 12 Dio disse a Balaam: «Tu non andrai con loro; non maledirai quel popolo perché è benedetto». 13 Balaam si alzò, la mattina, e disse ai prìncipi di Balac: «Andatevene al vostro paese, perché il Signore non mi ha dato il permesso di andare con voi». 14 I prìncipi di Moab si alzarono, tornarono da Balac e dissero: «Balaam ha rifiutato di venire con noi».
15 (B)Allora Balac mandò di nuovo dei prìncipi, in maggior numero e più importanti di quelli di prima. 16 Questi arrivarono da Balaam e gli dissero: «Così dice Balac, figlio di Sippor: “Che nulla t’impedisca di venire da me, 17 poiché io ti colmerò di onori e farò tutto ciò che mi dirai; vieni dunque, te ne prego, e maledici questo popolo”». 18 Ma Balaam rispose e disse ai servi di Balac: «Anche se Balac mi desse la sua casa piena d’argento e d’oro, non potrei trasgredire l’ordine del Signore, del mio Dio, per fare cosa piccola o grande che sia. 19 Nondimeno, trattenetevi qui, anche voi, stanotte, affinché io sappia ciò che il Signore mi dirà ancora». 20 Durante la notte Dio venne da Balaam e gli disse: «Se quegli uomini sono venuti a chiamarti, àlzati e va’ con loro; soltanto, farai ciò che io ti dirò». 21 Balaam quindi si alzò la mattina, sellò la sua asina e andò con i prìncipi di Moab.
22 Ma l’ira di Dio si accese perché egli era andato; e l’angelo del Signore si mise sulla strada per ostacolarlo. Balaam cavalcava la sua asina e aveva con sé due servi. 23 L’asina vide l’angelo del Signore che stava sulla strada con la spada sguainata in mano, svoltò e prese la via dei campi. Balaam percosse l’asina per rimetterla sulla strada. 24 Allora l’angelo del Signore si fermò in un sentiero incavato che passava tra le vigne e aveva un muro di qua e un muro di là. 25 L’asina vide l’angelo del Signore; si strinse al muro e schiacciò il piede di Balaam contro il muro; e Balaam la percosse di nuovo. 26 L’angelo del Signore passò di nuovo oltre e si fermò in un luogo stretto, dove non c’era modo di voltarsi né a destra né a sinistra. 27 L’asina vide l’angelo del Signore e si sdraiò sotto Balaam; l’ira di Balaam si accese ed egli percosse l’asina con un bastone.
28 Allora il Signore aprì la bocca dell’asina, che disse a Balaam: «Che cosa ti ho fatto perché tu mi percuota già per la terza volta?» 29 Balaam rispose all’asina: «Perché ti sei fatta beffe di me. Ah, se avessi una spada in mano ti ammazzerei all’istante!» 30 L’asina disse a Balaam: «Non sono forse la tua asina che hai sempre cavalcato fino ad oggi? Sono forse solita farti così?» Ed egli rispose: «No».
31 Allora il Signore aprì gli occhi a Balaam ed egli vide l’angelo del Signore che stava sulla strada, con la sua spada sguainata. Balaam s’inchinò e si prostrò con la faccia a terra. 32 L’angelo del Signore gli disse: «Perché hai percosso già tre volte la tua asina? Ecco, io sono uscito per fermarti, perché la via che percorri è contraria al mio volere. 33 L’asina mi ha visto e per tre volte ha deviato davanti a me. Se non avesse deviato davanti a me, io ti avrei ucciso all’istante, ma lei l’avrei lasciata in vita!» 34 Allora Balaam disse all’angelo del Signore: «Io ho peccato perché non sapevo che tu ti fossi messo contro di me sulla strada; e ora, se questo ti dispiace, io me ne ritornerò». 35 L’angelo del Signore disse a Balaam: «Va’ pure con quegli uomini; ma dirai soltanto quello che io ti dirò». E Balaam andò con i prìncipi di Balac.
36 (C)Quando Balac udì che Balaam arrivava, gli andò incontro fino alla città di Moab che è sul confine segnato dall’Arnon, nel punto più lontano. 37 Balac disse a Balaam: «Non ti ho forse fatto chiamare con insistenza? Perché non sei venuto da me? Non sono proprio in grado di farti onore?» 38 Balaam rispose a Balac: «Ecco, sono venuto da te; ma potrei forse dire qualsiasi cosa? La parola che Dio mi metterà in bocca, quella dirò».
39 Balaam andò con Balac e giunsero a Chiriat-Usot. 40 Balac sacrificò buoi e pecore e mandò parte della carne a Balaam e ai prìncipi che erano con lui.
41 La mattina Balac prese Balaam e lo fece salire a Bamot-Baal, da dove Balaam vide l’estremità del campo d’Israele.
