摩押王召巴蘭
22 以色列人繼續前行，抵達約旦河東岸的摩押平原，在耶利哥對面安營。 2 西撥的兒子摩押王巴勒及其人民得知以色列人殺敗了亞摩利人， 3 又見他們人多勢眾，都驚恐萬狀， 4 對米甸的長老說：「這群人將吞掉我們周圍的一切，如同牛吃光田間的草一樣。」那時，西撥的兒子巴勒做摩押王。 5 他差遣使者到幼發拉底河附近的毗奪——比珥的兒子巴蘭的家鄉，去召巴蘭。他讓使者帶去的信息是：「有一個民族從埃及鋪天蓋地而來，就住在我對面。 6 他們比我強大，求你為我咒詛他們。這樣，我也許就能擊敗他們，把他們趕走。我知道你祝福誰，誰就蒙福；你咒詛誰，誰就遭禍。」
7 摩押和米甸的長老們帶著占卜的禮金去見巴蘭，把巴勒的話轉告他。 8 巴蘭說：「你們今夜住在這裡，我必照耶和華的旨意回覆你們。」摩押的使臣就在巴蘭那裡住下。 9 晚上，上帝來問巴蘭：「住在你這裡的是誰？」 10 巴蘭回答說：「他們是摩押王西撥的兒子巴勒派來的使臣， 11 前來告訴我說，『有一個民族從埃及鋪天蓋地而來。請你去咒詛那民族，這樣巴勒王或許能擊敗他們，把他們趕走。』」 12 上帝對巴蘭說：「你不可跟他們去，也不可咒詛那民族，因為那民族是蒙福的。」
13 第二天清早，巴蘭對巴勒的使臣說：「你們回去吧，耶和華不准我跟你們去。」 14 摩押的使臣回去對巴勒說：「巴蘭不肯跟我們來。」 15 巴勒又派去更多、更尊貴的使臣。 16 他們到了巴蘭那裡，對他說：「西撥的兒子巴勒請你務必去一趟， 17 他必有重賞。你要什麼都可以，只求你去為他咒詛那民族。」 18 巴蘭回答說：「巴勒就是把他滿屋的金銀都給我，我也不能在任何事上違背我的上帝耶和華的命令。 19 你們可以在這裡過夜，看看耶和華對我還有什麼吩咐。」 20 當夜，上帝來對巴蘭說：「這些人既然來請你，你就跟他們去吧，但你只可照我說的做。」 21 巴蘭清早起來，備好驢，跟摩押的使臣去了。
上帝攔阻巴蘭
22 巴蘭這一去，激怒了上帝。巴蘭騎著驢，帶著兩個僕人正走在途中，耶和華的天使攔住他的去路。 23 驢看見耶和華的天使持刀攔在路上，就離開大路，跑進田間。巴蘭鞭打牠，要牠回到路上。 24 耶和華的天使又站在葡萄園之間的一條窄路上，兩邊都是牆。 25 驢看見耶和華的天使，就靠著牆邊走，將巴蘭的腳擠傷了。巴蘭又鞭打牠。 26 耶和華的天使又走到前面，站在狹窄之處，兩邊都無側身通過的餘地。 27 驢看見耶和華的天使，就臥在地上，巴蘭大怒，便用杖打牠。 28 耶和華使驢開口對巴蘭說：「我做錯了什麼，你竟打我三次！」 29 巴蘭說：「因為你戲弄我。如果我手中有刀，早就把你宰了！」 30 驢對巴蘭說：「我是你從小就騎的驢，我可曾這樣對你？」巴蘭說：「沒有。」
31 那時，耶和華開了巴蘭的眼，他才看見耶和華的天使持刀攔在路上，便俯伏在地。 32 耶和華的天使對他說：「你為何三次打你的驢？我特意來阻擋你，因為你走的路在我眼中是邪路。 33 你的驢看見我，一連躲避了三次，驢若沒有躲開，我早已殺了你，只放過驢。」 34 巴蘭對耶和華的天使說：「我有罪了，我不知道是你攔在路上。如果你反對我去，我就回去。」 35 耶和華的天使說：「跟這些人去吧，但你只許按我的指示說話。」於是，巴蘭跟巴勒的使臣去了。
36 巴勒聽見巴蘭來了，就來到邊界盡頭、亞嫩河邊的摩押城迎接他。 37 巴勒對巴蘭說：「上次派人請你，你為何不肯來？難道我不能給你重賞嗎？」 38 巴蘭說：「現在我已經來了，但我不能隨便發言，只能按上帝的指示說話。」 39 巴蘭和巴勒一同來到基列·胡瑣。 40 巴勒宰牛殺羊賞給巴蘭和隨行的臣僕。 41 次日清晨，巴勒領巴蘭上到巴力巴末[a]，從那裡可以看到一部分以色列人。

22 1 And the children of Israel journeyed, and encamped in the plains of Moab beyond the Jordan at Jericho.
2 And Balak the son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites. 3 And Moab was sore afraid of the people, because they were many: and Moab was distressed because of the children of Israel. 4 And Moab said unto the elders of Midian, Now will [a]this multitude lick up all that is round about us, as the ox licketh up the grass of the field. And Balak the son of Zippor was king of Moab at that time. 5 And he sent messengers unto Balaam the son of Beor, to Pethor, which is by the River, to the land of the children of his people, to call him, saying, Behold, there is a people come out from Egypt: behold, they cover the [b]face of the earth, and they abide over against me. 6 Come now therefore, I pray thee, curse me this people; for they are too mighty for me: peradventure I shall prevail, that we may smite them, and that I may drive them out of the land; for I know that he whom thou blessest is blessed, and he whom thou cursest is cursed.
7 And the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian departed with the rewards of divination in their hand; and they came unto Balaam, and spake unto him the words of Balak. 8 And he said unto them, Lodge here this night, and I will bring you word again, as Jehovah shall speak unto me: and the princes of Moab abode with Balaam. 9 And God came unto Balaam, and said, What men are these with thee? 10 And Balaam said unto God, Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, hath sent unto me, saying, 11 Behold, the people that is come out of Egypt, it covereth the [c]face of the earth: now, come curse me them; peradventure I shall be able to fight against them, and shall drive them out. 12 And God said unto Balaam, Thou shalt not go with them; thou shalt not curse the people; for they are blessed. 13 And Balaam rose up in the morning, and said unto the princes of Balak, Get you into your land; for Jehovah refuseth to give me leave to go with you. 14 And the princes of Moab rose up, and they went unto Balak, and said, Balaam refuseth to come with us.
15 And Balak sent yet again princes, more, and more honorable than they. 16 And they came to Balaam, and said to him, Thus saith Balak the son of Zippor, Let nothing, I pray thee, hinder thee from coming unto me: 17 for I will promote thee unto very great honor, and whatsoever thou sayest unto me I will do: come therefore, I pray thee, curse me this people. 18 And Balaam answered and said unto the servants of Balak, If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the word of Jehovah my God, to do less or more. 19 Now therefore, I pray you, tarry ye also here this night, that I may know what Jehovah will speak unto me more. 20 And God came unto Balaam at night, and said unto him, If the men are come to call thee, rise up, go with them; but only the word which I speak unto thee, that shalt thou do.
21 And Balaam rose up in the morning, and saddled his ass, and went with the princes of Moab. 22 And God’s anger was kindled because he went; and the angel of Jehovah placed himself in the way for an adversary against him. Now he was riding upon his ass, and his two servants were with him. 23 And the ass saw the angel of Jehovah standing in the way, with his sword drawn in his hand; and the ass turned aside out of the way, and went into the field: and Balaam smote the ass, to turn her into the way. 24 Then the angel of Jehovah stood in a narrow path between the vineyards, a wall being on this side, and a wall on that side. 25 And the ass saw the angel of Jehovah, and she thrust herself unto the wall, and crushed Balaam’s foot against the wall: and he smote her again. 26 And the angel of Jehovah went further, and stood in a narrow place, where was no way to turn either to the right hand or to the left. 27 And the ass saw the angel of Jehovah, and she lay down under Balaam: and Balaam’s anger was kindled, and he smote the ass with his staff. 28 And Jehovah opened the mouth of the ass, and she said unto Balaam, What have I done unto thee, that thou hast smitten me these three times? 29 And Balaam said unto the ass, Because thou hast mocked me: I would there were a sword in my hand, for now I had killed thee. 30 And the ass said unto Balaam, Am not I thine ass, upon which thou hast ridden all thy life long unto this day? was I ever wont to do so unto thee? and he said, Nay.
31 Then Jehovah opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of Jehovah standing in the way, with his sword drawn in his hand; and he bowed his head, and fell on his face. 32 And the angel of Jehovah said unto him, Wherefore hast thou smitten thine ass these three times? behold, I am come forth for an adversary, because thy way is [d]perverse before me: 33 and the ass saw me, and turned aside before me these three times: unless she had turned aside from me, surely now I had even slain thee, and saved her alive. 34 And Balaam said unto the angel of Jehovah, I have sinned; for I knew not that thou stoodest in the way against me: now therefore, if it displease thee, I will get me back again. 35 And the angel of Jehovah said unto Balaam, Go with the men; but only the word that I shall speak unto thee, that thou shalt speak. So Balaam went with the princes of Balak.
36 And when Balak heard that Balaam was come, he went out to meet him unto the City of Moab, which is on the border of the Arnon, which is in the utmost part of the border. 37 And Balak said unto Balaam, Did I not earnestly send unto thee to call thee? wherefore camest thou not unto me? am I not able indeed to promote thee to honor? 38 And Balaam said unto Balak, Lo, I am come unto thee: have I now any power at all to speak anything? the word that God putteth in my mouth, that shall I speak. 39 And Balaam went with Balak, and they came unto Kiriath-huzoth. 40 And Balak sacrificed oxen and sheep, and sent to Balaam, and to the princes that were with him.
41 And it came to pass in the morning, that Balak took Balaam, and brought him up into [e]the high places of Baal; and he saw from thence the utmost part of the people.

22 Después salieron los israelitas y acamparon en las llanuras de Moab, al otro lado del Jordán, frente a Jericó(A).
2 Y Balac(B), hijo de Zipor, vio todo lo que Israel había hecho a los amorreos. 3 Entonces Moab tuvo mucho temor(C) a causa del pueblo, porque eran muchos; y Moab tuvo miedo ante los israelitas. 4 Y Moab dijo a los ancianos de Madián(D): «Esta multitud lamerá todo lo que hay a nuestro derredor, como el buey lame la hierba del campo». En aquel tiempo Balac, hijo de Zipor, era rey de Moab. 5 Y envió mensajeros a Balaam, hijo de Beor(E), en Petor(F), que está cerca del Río[a], en la tierra de los hijos de su pueblo, para llamarlo y le dijo: «Mira, un pueblo salió de Egipto y cubren la superficie de la tierra y habitan frente a mí. 6 Ven ahora, te ruego(G), y maldíceme a este pueblo(H) porque es demasiado poderoso para mí; quizá pueda derrotarlos y echarlos de la tierra. Porque yo sé que a quien tú bendices es bendecido, y a quien tú maldices es maldecido».
7 Los ancianos de Moab y los ancianos de Madián fueron con el precio de la adivinación(I) en la mano; y llegaron a Balaam, y le repitieron las palabras de Balac. 8 Y él les dijo: «Pasen la noche aquí y yo les traeré palabra según lo que el Señor me diga». Y los jefes de Moab se quedaron con Balaam. 9 Entonces Dios(J) vino a Balaam y le preguntó: «¿Quiénes son estos hombres que están contigo?». 10 Y Balaam respondió a Dios: «Balac, hijo de Zipor, rey de Moab, me ha enviado un mensaje: 11 “Mira, el pueblo que salió de Egipto cubre la superficie de la tierra; ven ahora, maldícemelos; quizá yo pueda pelear contra ellos y expulsarlos”». 12 Y Dios dijo a Balaam: «No vayas con ellos; no maldecirás(K) al pueblo, porque es bendito(L)». 13 Balaam se levantó de mañana y dijo a los jefes de Balac: «Vuelvan a su tierra, porque el Señor ha rehusado dejarme ir con ustedes». 14 Y los jefes de Moab se levantaron y volvieron a Balac, y le dijeron: «Balaam rehusó venir con nosotros».
15 Entonces Balac envió jefes otra vez, más numerosos y más distinguidos que los anteriores. 16 Y fueron a Balaam, y le dijeron: «Así dice Balac, hijo de Zipor: “Te ruego que no rehúses venir a mí; 17 porque en verdad te honraré en gran manera, y haré cualquier cosa que me digas. Ven, pues, te ruego, y maldíceme a este pueblo(M)”». 18 Y Balaam respondió a los siervos de Balac: «Aunque Balac me diera su casa llena de plata y oro, yo no podría traspasar el mandamiento del Señor mi Dios(N) para hacer ni poco ni mucho. 19 Pero, les ruego que permanezcan aquí también esta noche, y sabré qué más me dice el Señor». 20 Dios vino a Balaam de noche, y le dijo: «Si los hombres han venido a llamarte, levántate y ve con ellos; pero solo dirás la palabra que Yo te hable(O)».
21 Y Balaam se levantó muy de mañana, aparejó su asna y se fue con los jefes de Moab(P). 22 Pero Dios se enojó porque él iba, y el ángel(Q) del Señor se puso en el camino como un adversario contra él. Y Balaam iba montado sobre su asna, y sus dos sirvientes con él. 23 Cuando el asna vio al ángel del Señor de pie en el camino con la espada desenvainada en la mano, el asna se salió del camino y se fue por medio del campo; pero Balaam golpeó el asna para hacerla volver al camino. 24 Entonces el ángel del Señor se puso en una senda estrecha de los viñedos, con una pared a un lado y otra pared al otro lado. 25 Al ver el asna al ángel del Señor, se pegó contra la pared y presionó el pie de Balaam contra la pared; entonces él la golpeó otra vez. 26 El ángel del Señor se fue más lejos, y se puso en un sitio estrecho donde no había manera de volverse ni a la derecha ni a la izquierda. 27 Y viendo el asna al ángel del Señor, se echó debajo de Balaam; y Balaam se enojó y golpeó al asna con su palo. 28 Entonces el Señor abrió la boca del asna(R), la cual dijo a Balaam: «¿Qué te he hecho yo que me has golpeado estas tres veces?». 29 Y Balaam respondió al asna: «Porque te has burlado de mí. Ojalá tuviera una espada en mi mano, que ahora mismo te mataría(S)». 30 Y el asna dijo a Balaam: «¿No soy yo tu asna, y sobre mí has cabalgado toda tu vida hasta hoy? ¿He tenido la costumbre de portarme así contigo?». «No», respondió Balaam.
31 Entonces el Señor abrió los ojos de Balaam, y él vio al ángel del Señor de pie en el camino, con la espada desenvainada en su mano, e inclinándose, se postró rostro en tierra(T); 32 y el ángel del Señor le dijo: «¿Por qué has golpeado a tu asna estas tres veces? Mira, yo he salido como adversario, porque tu camino me era contrario(U); 33 pero el asna me vio y se apartó de mí estas tres veces. Si no se hubiera apartado de mí, ciertamente yo te hubiera matado ahora mismo, y a ella la hubiera dejado vivir». 34 Y Balaam dijo al ángel del Señor: «He pecado(V), pues no sabía que tú estabas en el camino para enfrentarte a mí. Pero ahora, si te desagrada, me volveré». 35 El ángel del Señor respondió a Balaam: «Ve con los hombres, pero hablarás solo la palabra que yo te diga(W)». Y Balaam se fue con los jefes de Balac.
36 Al oír Balac que Balaam se acercaba, salió a recibirlo en una ciudad de Moab, que está sobre la frontera del Arnón, al extremo de la frontera. 37 Entonces Balac dijo a Balaam: «¿No envié a llamarte con urgencia? ¿Por qué no viniste a mí? ¿Acaso no soy capaz de honrarte?». 38 Balaam respondió a Balac: «Mira, ahora he venido a ti. ¿Hay algo, acaso, que pueda decir? La palabra que Dios ponga en mi boca, esa diré(X)». 39 Balaam fue con Balac, y llegaron a Quiriat Huzot. 40 Balac sacrificó bueyes y ovejas, y envió algunos a Balaam y a los jefes que estaban con él.
41 Y a la mañana siguiente, Balac tomó a Balaam y lo hizo subir a los lugares altos de Baal(Y), y desde allí vio un extremo del pueblo(Z).
