The King of Arad Is Defeated
21 When the Canaanite king of Arad, who lived in the Negev, heard that the Israelites were coming on the road to Atharim, he fought them and took some of them as prisoners. 2 Then the Israelites made this vow to Yahweh: “If you will hand these people over to us, we’ll destroy their cities because you’ve claimed them.” 3 Yahweh listened to the Israelites and handed the Canaanites over to them. They destroyed the Canaanites and their cities. So they called the place Hormah [Claimed for Destruction].
The Bronze Snake
4 Then they moved from Mount Hor, following the road that goes to the Red Sea, in order to get around Edom. The people became impatient on the trip 5 and criticized Elohim and Moses. They said, “Why did you make us leave Egypt—just to let us die in the desert? There’s no bread or water, and we can’t stand this awful food!”
6 So Yahweh sent poisonous snakes among the people. They bit the people, and many of the Israelites died. 7 The people came to Moses and said, “We sinned when we criticized Yahweh and you. Pray to Yahweh so that he will take the snakes away from us.” So Moses prayed for the people.
8 Yahweh said to Moses, “Make a snake, and put it on a pole. Anyone who is bitten can look at it and live.” 9 So Moses made a bronze snake and put it on a pole. People looked at the bronze snake after they were bitten, and they lived.[a]
Israel Travels Past Edom to Moab
10 The Israelites moved and set up camp at Oboth. 11 Next they moved from Oboth and set up camp at Iye Abarim in the desert west of Moab. 12 From there they moved and set up camp at the Zered River. 13 They moved from there and set up camp on the other side of the Arnon Valley in the desert that extends into Amorite territory. (The Arnon Valley is the border between Moab and the Amorites.) 14 This is how it’s described in the Book of the Wars of Yahweh:
“. . . Waheb in Suphah and the valleys,
15 Arnon and the slopes of the valleys
that go down to the site of Ar
and lie along the border of Moab. . . .”
16 From there they went to Beer [Well]. This is the well where Yahweh said to Moses, “Gather the people, and I will give them water.” 17 Then Israel sang this song about the well:
“Make your water spring up!
Sing to the well,
18 the well dug by princes,
dug out by the nobles of the people
with their scepters and staffs.”
From the desert they went to Mattanah, 19 and from Mattanah to Nahaliel, and from Nahaliel to Bamoth, 20 and from Bamoth to the valley in Moab where Mount Pisgah overlooks Jeshimon.
Sihon and Og Defeated
21 Then Israel sent messengers to say to King Sihon of the Amorites, 22 “Let us go through your country. We won’t go through any of your fields or vineyards or drink any of the water from your wells. We’ll stay on the king’s highway until we’ve passed through your territory.”
23 Sihon wouldn’t let Israel pass through his territory. Sihon gathered all his troops and came out into the desert to attack Israel. When Sihon’s troops came to Jahaz, they fought against Israel. 24 But Israel defeated them in battle and took possession of their land from the Arnon Valley to the Jabbok River. They stopped at the border of the Ammon because it was fortified. 25 Israel took all those Amorite cities, including Heshbon and all its villages, and lived in them. 26 Heshbon was the city of King Sihon of the Amorites. He had fought the former king of Moab and had taken all his land up to the Arnon Valley.
27 This is why the poets say:
“Come to Heshbon! Rebuild it!
Restore Sihon’s city!
28 Fire came out of Heshbon,
flames from Sihon’s city.
They destroyed Ar of Moab,
the rulers of Arnon’s worship sites.[b]
29 How horrible it is for you, Moab!
You are destroyed, you people of the god Chemosh.
Chemosh let his sons become refugees
and he let his daughters become prisoners
of King Sihon of the Amorites.
30 But we shot the Amorites full of arrows.
From Heshbon to Dibon they all died.
We destroyed everyone and everything
between Nophah and Medeba.”
31 So Israel settled in the land of the Amorites. 32 After Moses sent spies to Jazer, the Israelites captured its cities and villages and forced out the Amorites who were there. 33 Then they turned and followed the road that goes to Bashan. King Og of Bashan and all his troops came out to fight the Israelites at Edrei.
34 Yahweh said to Moses, “Don’t be afraid of him. I’ll hand him, all his troops, and his land over to you. Do to him what you did to King Sihon of the Amorites, who ruled in Heshbon.” 35 The Israelites defeated him, his sons, and all his troops, leaving no survivors. And they took possession of his land.

Victoria sobre el rey cananeo de Arad
21 Cuando el rey cananeo de Arad, en el Négueb, supo que Israel venía por el camino de Atarín, le presentó batalla e hizo algunos prisioneros. 2 Entonces Israel hizo un voto al Señor, diciendo:
— Si me entregas a este pueblo, consagraré al exterminio sus ciudades.
3 El Señor atendió la petición de Israel y puso en sus manos a los cananeos que, junto con sus ciudades, fueron consagrados al exterminio. Por eso se dio a aquel lugar el nombre de Jormá.
La serpiente de bronce
4 Después partieron los israelitas del monte Hor, camino del mar de las Cañas, rodeando el país de Edom. Pero el pueblo se impacientó por el camino 5 y protestó contra Dios y contra Moisés, diciendo:
— ¿Por qué nos habéis hecho salir de Egipto para hacernos morir en este desierto? Pues no hay pan ni agua, y estamos hastiados de este alimento miserable.
6 El Señor envió entonces contra el pueblo serpientes venenosas que los mordían. Fueron muchos los israelitas que murieron, 7 por lo que el pueblo acudió a Moisés y le suplicó:
— Hemos pecado al hablar contra el Señor y contra ti. Intercede ante el Señor para que aleje estas serpientes de nosotros.
Moisés intercedió por el pueblo 8 y el Señor le dijo:
— Haz esculpir una serpiente venenosa y colócala en la punta de una asta; cualquiera que sea mordido y la mire, se recuperará.
9 Esculpió, en efecto, Moisés una serpiente de bronce y la puso en la punta de una asta; cuando uno cualquiera era mordido por una serpiente, miraba a la serpiente de bronce y se recuperaba.
Etapas por el desierto
10 Los israelitas continuaron su marcha y acamparon en Obot. 11 Luego partieron de Obot y acamparon en Iyé-Abarín, en el desierto que está frente a Moab, al oriente. 12 Partieron de allí y acamparon en el valle de Záred. 13 Partieron de allí y acamparon al otro lado del Arnón que cruza el desierto y procede del territorio de los amorreos; y es que el Arnón marca la frontera entre Moab y los amorreos. 14 Por eso se dice en el libro de las Batallas del Señor: “… Waheb en Sufa y los arroyos del Arnón; 15 sus afluentes se alargan hasta donde se asienta Ar y fluyen a lo largo de la frontera de Moab”.
16 Desde allí se dirigieron a Beer, que es el pozo donde el Señor le dijo a Moisés: “Reúne al pueblo y yo le proporcionaré agua”. 17 Fue entonces cuando Israel entonó esta canción:
¡Brota, pozo! ¡Cantad en su honor!
18 Es el pozo que cavaron los príncipes,
excavado por los jefes del pueblo;
con sus cetros lo cavaron,
con sus propios cayados.
Desde el desierto se dirigieron a Mataná; 19 de Mataná a Najaliel, de Najaliel a Bamot 20 y de Bamot al valle que está en la campiña de Moab, hasta llegar a la cumbre del Pisga desde donde se domina la estepa.

21 Entonces Israel envió mensajeros a Sejón, rey de los amorreos, y le dijo:
22 — Déjame pasar por tu país. No iremos por los sembrados, ni por las viñas, ni beberemos agua de los pozos. Iremos por la calzada real, hasta que hayamos cruzado tu territorio.
23 Pero Sejón no dejó pasar a Israel por su territorio, sino que convocó a todo su pueblo e hizo frente a Israel en el desierto. Se encontró con Israel en Jasá y le presentó batalla. 24 Pero Israel los pasó a espada, se apoderó de su tierra desde el Arnón hasta el Yaboc, llegando hasta la frontera de los amonitas, frontera que estaba fuertemente fortificada. 25 Israel capturó todas estas ciudades y se asentó en todas las ciudades de los amorreos, en Jesbón y en todas sus aldeas anejas.
26 Jesbón era la ciudad de Sejón, rey de los amorreos, quien había guerreado con el anterior rey de Moab y le había arrebatado todo su territorio hasta el Arnón. 27 Por eso cantan los trovadores:
¡Venid a Jesbón!
¡Qué fortificada estaba

Arad Destroyed
21 When the Canaanite king of Arad,(A) who lived in the Negev,(B) heard that Israel was coming along the road to Atharim, he attacked the Israelites and captured some of them. 2 Then Israel made this vow(C) to the Lord: “If you will deliver these people into our hands, we will totally destroy[a](D) their cities.” 3 The Lord listened to Israel’s plea and gave the Canaanites(E) over to them. They completely destroyed them(F) and their towns; so the place was named Hormah.[b](G)
The Bronze Snake
4 They traveled from Mount Hor(H) along the route to the Red Sea,[c](I) to go around Edom.(J) But the people grew impatient on the way;(K) 5 they spoke against God(L) and against Moses, and said, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt(M) to die in the wilderness?(N) There is no bread! There is no water!(O) And we detest this miserable food!”(P)
6 Then the Lord sent venomous snakes(Q) among them; they bit the people and many Israelites died.(R) 7 The people came to Moses(S) and said, “We sinned(T) when we spoke against the Lord and against you. Pray that the Lord(U) will take the snakes away from us.” So Moses prayed(V) for the people.
8 The Lord said to Moses, “Make a snake and put it up on a pole;(W) anyone who is bitten can look at it and live.” 9 So Moses made a bronze snake(X) and put it up on a pole. Then when anyone was bitten by a snake and looked at the bronze snake, they lived.(Y)
The Journey to Moab
10 The Israelites moved on and camped at Oboth.(Z) 11 Then they set out from Oboth and camped in Iye Abarim, in the wilderness that faces Moab(AA) toward the sunrise. 12 From there they moved on and camped in the Zered Valley.(AB) 13 They set out from there and camped alongside the Arnon(AC), which is in the wilderness extending into Amorite territory. The Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites.(AD) 14 That is why the Book of the Wars(AE) of the Lord says:
“. . . Zahab[d] in Suphah and the ravines,
the Arnon 15 and[e] the slopes of the ravines
that lead to the settlement of Ar(AF)
and lie along the border of Moab.”
16 From there they continued on to Beer,(AG) the well where the Lord said to Moses, “Gather the people together and I will give them water.”
17 Then Israel sang this song:(AH)
“Spring up, O well!
Sing about it,
18 about the well that the princes dug,
that the nobles of the people sank—
the nobles with scepters and staffs.”
Then they went from the wilderness to Mattanah, 19 from Mattanah to Nahaliel, from Nahaliel to Bamoth, 20 and from Bamoth to the valley in Moab where the top of Pisgah(AI) overlooks the wasteland.
Defeat of Sihon and Og
21 Israel sent messengers(AJ) to say to Sihon(AK) king of the Amorites:(AL)
22 “Let us pass through your country. We will not turn aside into any field or vineyard, or drink water from any well. We will travel along the King’s Highway until we have passed through your territory.(AM)”
23 But Sihon would not let Israel pass through his territory.(AN) He mustered his entire army and marched out into the wilderness against Israel. When he reached Jahaz,(AO) he fought with Israel.(AP) 24 Israel, however, put him to the sword(AQ) and took over his land(AR) from the Arnon to the Jabbok,(AS) but only as far as the Ammonites,(AT) because their border was fortified. 25 Israel captured all the cities of the Amorites(AU) and occupied them,(AV) including Heshbon(AW) and all its surrounding settlements. 26 Heshbon was the city of Sihon(AX) king of the Amorites,(AY) who had fought against the former king of Moab(AZ) and had taken from him all his land as far as the Arnon.(BA)
27 That is why the poets say:
“Come to Heshbon and let it be rebuilt;
let Sihon’s city be restored.
28 “Fire went out from Heshbon,
a blaze from the city of Sihon.(BB)
It consumed(BC) Ar(BD) of Moab,
the citizens of Arnon’s heights.(BE)
29 Woe to you, Moab!(BF)
You are destroyed, people of Chemosh!(BG)
He has given up his sons as fugitives(BH)
and his daughters as captives(BI)
to Sihon king of the Amorites.
30 “But we have overthrown them;
Heshbon’s dominion has been destroyed all the way to Dibon.(BJ)
We have demolished them as far as Nophah,
which extends to Medeba.(BK)”
31 So Israel settled in the land of the Amorites.(BL)
32 After Moses had sent spies(BM) to Jazer,(BN) the Israelites captured its surrounding settlements and drove out the Amorites who were there. 33 Then they turned and went up along the road toward Bashan(BO),(BP) and Og king of Bashan and his whole army marched out to meet them in battle at Edrei.(BQ)
34 The Lord said to Moses, “Do not be afraid of him, for I have delivered him into your hands, along with his whole army and his land. Do to him what you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon.(BR)”
35 So they struck him down, together with his sons and his whole army, leaving them no survivors.(BS) And they took possession of his land.(BT)

2 And Israel vowed a vow unto the Lord, and said, If thou wilt indeed deliver this people into my hand, then I will utterly destroy their cities.
3 And the Lord hearkened to the voice of Israel, and delivered up the Canaanites; and they utterly destroyed them and their cities: and he called the name of the place Hormah.
4 And they journeyed from mount Hor by the way of the Red sea, to compass the land of Edom: and the soul of the people was much discouraged because of the way.
5 And the people spake against God, and against Moses, Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? for there is no bread, neither is there any water; and our soul loatheth this light bread.

27 Wherefore they that speak in proverbs say, Come into Heshbon, let the city of Sihon be built and prepared:

29 Woe to thee, Moab! thou art undone, O people of Chemosh: he hath given his sons that escaped, and his daughters, into captivity unto Sihon king of the Amorites.
30 We have shot at them; Heshbon is perished even unto Dibon, and we have laid them waste even unto Nophah, which reacheth unto Medeba.
31 Thus Israel dwelt in the land of the Amorites.
32 And Moses sent to spy out Jaazer, and they took the villages thereof, and drove out the Amorites that were there.
33 And they turned and went up by the way of Bashan: and og the king of bashan went out against them, he, and all his people, to the battle at edrei.
34 And the Lord said unto Moses, Fear him not: for I have delivered him into thy hand, and all his people, and his land; and thou shalt do to him as thou didst unto Sihon king of the Amorites, which dwelt at Heshbon.
35 So they smote him, and his sons, and all his people, until there was none left him alive: and they possessed his land.

33 Después se volvieron y subieron por el camino de Basán; y Og, rey de Basán, salió con[r] todo su pueblo para presentarles[s] batalla en Edrei(AK). 34 Pero el Señor dijo a Moisés: No le tengas miedo porque lo he entregado en tu mano, y a todo su pueblo y a su tierra; y harás con él como hiciste con Sehón, rey de los amorreos, el que habitaba en Hesbón(AL). 35 Así que lo mataron[t] a él, a sus hijos y a todo su pueblo, hasta que no le quedó remanente; y tomaron posesión de su tierra(AM).
