(A)There was no water for the congregation, (B)and they assembled against Moses and Aaron. (C)Then the people argued with Moses and spoke, saying, “(D)If only we had perished (E)when our brothers perished before the Lord! (F)Why then have you brought the Lords assembly into this wilderness, for us and our livestock to die [a]here? Why did you make us come up from Egypt, to bring us into this wretched place? (G)It is not a place of [b]grain or figs or vines or pomegranates, nor is there water to drink!” Then Moses and Aaron came in from the presence of the assembly to the entrance of the tent of meeting and (H)fell on their faces. And the glory of the Lord appeared to them; then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,

The Waters of Meribah

“Take (I)the staff; and you and your brother Aaron assemble the congregation and speak to the rock before their eyes, that it shall yield its water. So you shall bring water for them out of the rock, and have the congregation and their livestock drink.”

So Moses took the staff (J)from before the Lord, just as He had commanded him; 10 and Moses and Aaron summoned the assembly in front of the rock. And he said to them, “(K)Listen now, you rebels; shall we bring water for you out of this rock?” 11 Then Moses raised his hand and struck the rock twice with his staff; and (L)water came out abundantly, and the congregation and their livestock drank. 12 But the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “(M)Since you did not trust in Me, to treat Me as holy in the sight of the sons of Israel, for that reason you shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them.” 13 Those were called the waters of [c](N)Meribah, [d]because the sons of Israel argued with the Lord, and He proved Himself holy among them.

There was no water for the community, so they assembled against Moses and Aaron. The people quarreled with Moses and said,(A) “If only we had perished when our brothers perished before the Lord.(B) Why have you brought the Lord’s assembly into this wilderness(C) for us and our livestock to die here?(D) Why have you led us up from Egypt to bring us to this evil place? It’s not a place of grain, figs, vines, and pomegranates,(E) and there is no water to drink!”

Then Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly to the doorway of the tent of meeting. They fell facedown, and the glory of the Lord appeared to them. The Lord spoke to Moses, “Take the staff(F) and assemble the community. You and your brother Aaron are to speak to the rock(G) while they watch, and it will yield its water. You will bring out water for them from the rock and provide drink for the community and their livestock.”

So Moses took the staff from the Lord’s presence(H) just as he had commanded him. 10 Moses and Aaron summoned the assembly in front of the rock, and Moses said to them, “Listen, you rebels! Must we bring water out of this rock for you?” 11 Then Moses raised his hand and struck the rock twice with his staff, so that abundant water gushed out, and the community and their livestock drank.(I)

12 But the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you did not trust me to demonstrate my holiness in the sight of the Israelites, you will not bring this assembly into the land I have given them.”(J) 13 These are the Waters of Meribah,[a](K) where the Israelites quarreled with the Lord, and he demonstrated his holiness to them.(L)
