The Voice
20 After the Israelites, the whole group of them, journeyed into the Zin Wilderness during the first month, they set up camp in Kadesh. And it was there that Miriam died and was buried.
2 They ran out of water and again blamed their leaders, Moses and Aaron.
Israelites (arguing with Moses): 3 It would have been so much better if we had simply died along with the rest of our relatives, Korah, Abiram, and Dathan, right in front of the Eternal One.[a] 4-5 Why in the world would you drag us, the Eternal’s own group, out of Egypt into this wilderness where we’ll soon die and our livestock too? And there aren’t any grains, figs, grapes, or pomegranates, and there isn’t even any water!
Will these people never learn? But why should they be any different than the rest of us? We all tend to forget God’s provision, and we focus on the challenge before us. God has been leading them through a region full of challenges. You would think that after 40 years of daily provision from God in the wilderness these people would quit fearing the worst, especially since they have already gone through this very same experience once before—when they came out of Egypt in Exodus 17. Unfortunately, Moses doesn’t follow God’s instruction just as it is delivered to him, so he, too, is unfaithful. Instead of “provision” or “water-of-plenty,” the place is known as Meribah (“rebellion”). They are to remember their lack of faith and their active rebellion against God their savior every time they mention this place.
6 After hearing them out, Moses and Aaron walked away. At the congregation tent’s opening, they collapsed to the ground, interceding for the people. Then and there, the Eternal’s glory shone for them to see, 7 and He spoke to Moses.
Eternal One: 8 You and Aaron grab the staff before the covenant chest, gather the whole group so that all the people can see and hear you, and speak to the rock. Tell it to release its water for them to use. In this way, you’ll get water from the rock for everyone to drink, including all the animals.
9 So Moses did that. He took the staff just as God told him to do. 10 Then he and his brother gathered all the people in front of the rock.
Moses (to the Israelites): Listen up, you rebellious lot. Should we get water for you from this rock?
11 And as he spoke, Moses raised his hand and hit the rock—once, twice—and immediately the water came gushing out. All drank their fill, people and animals alike. 12 But the Eternal One scolded Moses and Aaron for their actions.
Eternal One: Because you didn’t trust Me and treat Me as holy before the Israelites, you will not lead this group into the land I have given them.
13 Because at this spot the Israelites rebelled against the Eternal and the display of His holiness, the water here is called Meribah, which means “rebellion.”
14 Also while in Kadesh, Moses sent a message to the Edomite king.
Kadesh (“holy”) is the place where God was not treated in a holy manner by the Israelites, including Moses and Aaron. And neither do Israel’s ancient relatives from Esau, the Edomites, who shared a common ancestor with Israel—Isaac.
Moses’ Message (to the king of Edom): Greetings from your brother, Israel. You’ve heard how hard these past years have been for us; 15 how in the midst of famine, our ancestors journeyed down into Egypt; and how after settling there a long while, the Egyptians began to treat our ancestors and then us harshly. 16 The Eternal heard and answered our pitiful cry, actually sent a messenger and led us out of Egypt. Now here we are in Kadesh, right at the border of your country. 17 Would you please grant us permission to cross through? I promise that we won’t take anything from your seeded farmland or cultivated countryside. Nor will we drink from your wells. We will stick to the main road, the king’s highway, and not step off it either to the right or left until we’re well past your country’s limits.
Edom’s Message: 18 No. If you so much as put a foot in our territory, we’ll attack you.
Israelites’ Message: 19 But we will keep strictly to the highway and pay you if any of us or any of our animals drink any water, only let us pass through.
Edom’s Message: 20 Absolutely not.
At that point, the Edomites indeed came out in force, fully armed, against the Israelites. 21 This response proved there was no negotiating with Edom for passage, so the Israelites turned to go another direction.
22-23 The whole Israelite community packed up and left Kadesh. They journeyed to the edge of Edomite territory, to Mount Hor, specifically.
Eternal One (to Moses and Aaron): 24 Because you two didn’t follow My orders back at the waters of Meribah, it is time for Aaron to die and be with his ancestors. 25 So bring Aaron, along with the son who will be his successor, Eleazar, up to Mount Hor. 26 There, you shall strip Aaron of his priestly garments that distinguish him as the priest of priests and put them on Eleazar. There, Aaron will join his ancestors in death.
27 With a heavy heart, Moses did just as the Eternal One had instructed. These brothers, now old, slowly made their way up Mount Hor while the whole community watched. 28 When they reached the top, Moses stripped Aaron of his priestly robes and put them on Aaron’s son, Eleazar. And Aaron died there. Then Moses and Eleazar went back down the mountain. 29 Understanding that Aaron was dead, the family of Israel wept for 30 days.

Water from the Rock
20 In the first month all the people of Israel arrived at the Desert of Zin. They stayed at Kadesh. There Miriam died and was buried. 2 There was no water for the people. So they came together against Moses and Aaron. 3 They argued with Moses. They said, “We should have died in front of the Lord as our brothers did. 4 Why did you bring the Lord’s people into this desert? Are we and our animals to die here? 5 Why did you bring us from Egypt to this terrible place? It has no grain, figs or pomegranates. And there’s no water to drink!”
6 So Moses and Aaron left the people. Then they went to the entrance of the Meeting Tent. They bowed facedown. And the glory of the Lord appeared to them. 7 The Lord said to Moses, 8 “You and your brother Aaron should gather the people. Also take your walking stick. Speak to that rock in front of them. Then water will flow from it. Give that water to the people and their animals.”
9 So Moses took the stick from in front of the Lord. He did as the Lord had said. 10 He and Aaron gathered the people in front of the rock. Then Moses said, “Now listen to me, you complainers! Do you want us to bring water out of this rock?” 11 Then Moses lifted his hand and hit the rock twice with his stick. Water began pouring out. And the people and their animals drank it.
12 But the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “You did not believe me. You did not honor me as holy before the people. So you will not lead them into the land I will give them.”
13 These are the waters of Meribah.[a] Here the Israelites argued with the Lord. And the Lord showed them he was holy.
Edom Will Not Let Israel Pass
14 From Kadesh, Moses sent messengers to the king of Edom. He said, “Your brothers, the Israelites, say to you: You know about all the troubles we have had. 15 Our ancestors went down into Egypt. And we lived there for many years. The people of Egypt were cruel to our ancestors. 16 But we cried out to the Lord. He heard us and sent us an angel to bring us out of Egypt.
“Now we are here at Kadesh, a town on the edge of your land. 17 Please let us pass through your country. We will not touch any fields of grain or vineyards. We will not drink water from the wells. We will travel only along the king’s road. We will not turn right or left until we have passed through your country.”
18 But the king of Edom answered: “You may not pass through here. If you try, I will come and meet you with swords.”
19 The Israelites answered: “We will go along the main road. If our animals drink any of your water, we will pay for it. We only want to walk through. That’s all.”
20 But he answered: “You may not pass through here.”
Then the Edomites went out to meet the Israelites with a large and powerful army. 21 The Edomites refused to let them pass through their country. So the Israelites turned back.
Aaron Dies
22 All the Israelites moved from Kadesh to Mount Hor. 23 It was near the border of Edom. The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, 24 “Aaron will die. He will not enter the land that I’m giving to the Israelites. This is because you both acted against my command at the waters of Meribah. 25 Take Aaron and his son Eleazar up on Mount Hor. 26 Take off Aaron’s special clothes and put them on his son Eleazar. Aaron will die there. He will join his ancestors.”
27 Moses obeyed the Lord’s command. They climbed up Mount Hor. All the people saw them go. 28 Moses took off Aaron’s clothes. He put them on Aaron’s son Eleazar. Then Aaron died there on top of the mountain. And Moses and Eleazar came back down the mountain. 29 Then all the people learned that Aaron was dead. So everyone in Israel cried for him for 30 days.

20 Het volk Israël arriveerde in de eerste maand in de woestijn Sin en sloeg het kamp op bij Kades. Daar stierf Mirjam en werd zij begraven.
2 Er was op die plaats niet genoeg drinkwater en het volk stond opnieuw op tegen Mozes en Aäron. 3 Een ontevreden menigte liep te hoop en schreeuwde tegen Mozes: ‘Waren wij maar gelijk gedood met onze broeders die door de Here werden gedood! 4 U hebt ons met opzet hier in de woestijn gebracht om van ons af te komen, samen met onze kudden. 5 Hoe haalde u het in uw hoofd ons uit Egypte te laten wegtrekken en naar dit onherbergzame oord te brengen? Noemt u dit soms vruchtbaar land, met vijgen, wijn en granaatappels? Er is niet eens drinkwater!’
6 Mozes en Aäron draaiden zich om en gingen naar de ingang van de tabernakel, waar zij zich voor de Here op de grond lieten vallen, en de heerlijkheid van de Here verscheen aan hen. 7 De Here zei tegen Mozes: 8 ‘Haal de staf en roep daarna het volk bijeen. Terwijl de mensen toekijken, moet u tegen die rots daar spreken en dan zal er genoeg water uitkomen! U zult hun water geven uit een rots en er zal genoeg zijn voor alle mensen en hun vee!’ 9 Mozes deed wat de Here had gezegd. Hij haalde de staf van de plaats waar hij voor de ogen van de Here stond. 10 Toen riepen Mozes en Aäron het volk bijeen bij de rots en Mozes zei tegen de menigte: ‘Luister, opstandelingen! Moeten wij voor jullie water uit deze rots laten komen?’ 11 Toen hief Mozes de staf op en sloeg tweemaal op de rots. Het water gutste eruit en de mensen en het vee konden drinken. 12 Maar de Here zei tegen Mozes en Aäron: ‘Omdat u Mij niet hebt geloofd en Mij niet de eer hebt gegeven voor de ogen van het volk Israël, zult u beiden hen niet het land mogen binnenbrengen dat Ik heb beloofd!’ 13 Deze plaats werd Meriba (Water van Ruzie) genoemd, omdat de Israëlieten hier opstandig werden tegen de Here en Hij Zich hier als de Heilige bewees.
14 Tijdens het verblijf in Kades zond Mozes boodschappers naar de koning van Edom: ‘Wij zijn de nakomelingen van uw broeder Israël en u kent ons verhaal, van alles wat ons is overkomen. 15 Hoe onze voorouders naar Egypte trokken, waar zij lange tijd verbleven om ten slotte slaven van de Egyptenaren te worden. 16 Maar toen wij de Here riepen, hoorde Hij ons en stuurde een engel die ons uit Egypte leidde. Nu zijn wij hier in Kades aangekomen en wij hebben ons kamp aan de grens van uw land opgeslagen. 17 Laat ons alstublieft door uw land trekken. Wij zullen voorzichtig zijn en niet door uw akkers en wijngaarden trekken, wij zullen zelfs geen water uit uw bronnen gebruiken. Wij blijven op de hoofdweg en zullen die niet eerder verlaten dan wanneer wij uw landsgrens aan de andere kant zijn overgetrokken.’ 18 Maar de koning van Edom zei: ‘Blijf uit ons land! Als u probeert binnen te komen, zal ik u met een leger tegemoet komen!’ 19 ‘Maar koning,’ pleitten de boodschappers, ‘wij zullen op de hoofdweg blijven en zelfs geen water van u drinken of wij kopen het voor de prijs die u vraagt. Wij willen alleen door uw land trekken, verder niets.’ 20 Maar de koning van Edom bleef weigeren. ‘Blijf uit ons land,’ waarschuwde hij en na zijn leger te hebben gemobiliseerd, trok hij met man en macht op naar de grens. 21,22 Omdat de Edomieten weigerden Israël door hun land te laten trekken, keerde Israël om en trok van Kades naar de berg Hor.
23 Toen zei de Here bij de grens van het land Edom tegen Mozes en Aäron: 24 ‘Het is tijd voor Aäron om te sterven, want hij zal het land dat Ik het volk Israël heb gegeven, niet binnengaan. U beiden hebt mijn instructies betreffende het water van Meriba in de wind geslagen. 25 Ga met Aäron en zijn zoon Eleazar de berg Hor op. 26 Daar moet u Aäron het priestergewaad uittrekken en het aan zijn zoon Eleazar geven om aan te trekken. Aäron zal daar sterven.’ 27 Mozes deed wat de Here hem had opgedragen. Voor de ogen van het hele volk beklommen zij de berg Hor. 28 Toen zij hoog genoeg waren, trok Mozes Aäron het priestergewaad uit en liet Eleazar het aantrekken. En daar op de berg stierf Aäron. Mozes en Eleazar keerden terug. 29 Toen het volk op de hoogte werd gebracht van Aärons dood, rouwde het dertig dagen om hem.
