¹⁸ Then ^(A)Edom said to him, “You shall not pass through my land, lest I come out against you with the sword.”

^3 (A)“An Ammonite or Moabite shall not enter the assembly of the Lord; even to the tenth generation none of his descendants shall enter the assembly of the Lord forever,

^4 (A)because they did not meet you with bread and water on the road when you came out of Egypt, and ^(B)because they hired against you Balaam the son of Beor from Pethor of ^[a]Mesopotamia, to curse you.

¹⁷ Then ^(A)Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, “Please let me pass through your land.” ^(B)But the king of Edom would not heed. And in like manner they sent to the ^(C)king of Moab, but he would not consent. So Israel ^(D)remained in Kadesh.
