14 And all the congregation lifted up their voice, and cried; and the people wept that night. 2 And all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron: and the whole congregation said unto them, Would God that we had died in the land of Egypt! or would God we had died in this wilderness! 3 And wherefore hath the Lord brought us unto this land, to fall by the sword, that our wives and our children should be a prey? were it not better for us to return into Egypt? 4 And they said one to another, Let us make a captain, and let us return into Egypt. 5 Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel.

6 And Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, which were of them that searched the land, rent their clothes: 7 and they spake unto all the company of the children of Israel, saying, The land, which we passed through to search it, is an exceeding good land. 8 If the Lord delight in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it us; a land which floweth with milk and honey. 9 Only rebel not ye against the Lord, neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defence is departed from them, and the Lord is with us: fear them not. 10 But all the congregation bade stone them with stones. And the glory of the Lord appeared in the tabernacle of the congregation before all the children of Israel.

11 And the Lord said unto Moses, How long will this people provoke me? and how long will it be ere they believe me, for all the signs which I have shewed among them? 12 I will smite them with the pestilence, and disinherit them, and will make of thee a greater nation and mightier than they.

13 And Moses said unto the Lord, Then the Egyptians shall hear it, (for thou broughtest up this people in thy might from among them;) 14 and they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land: for they have heard that thou Lord art among this people, that thou Lord art seen face to face, and that thy cloud standeth over them, and that thou goest before them, by day time in a pillar of a cloud, and in a pillar of fire by night. 15 Now if thou shalt kill all this people as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of thee will speak, saying, 16 Because the Lord was not able to bring this people into the land which he sware unto them, therefore he hath slain them in the wilderness. 17 And now, I beseech thee, let the power of my Lord be great, according as thou hast spoken, saying, 18 The Lord is longsuffering, and of great mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation. 19 Pardon, I beseech thee, the iniquity of this people according unto the greatness of thy mercy, and as thou hast forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.

20 And the Lord said, I have pardoned according to thy word: 21 but as truly as I live, all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the Lord. 22 Because all those men which have seen my glory, and my miracles, which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and have tempted me now these ten times, and have not hearkened to my voice; 23 surely they shall not see the land which I sware unto their fathers, neither shall any of them that provoked me see it: 24 but my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed me fully, him will I bring into the land whereinto he went; and his seed shall possess it. 25 (Now the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwelt in the valley.) To morrow turn you, and get you into the wilderness by the way of the Red sea.

26 And the Lord spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying, 27 How long shall I bear with this evil congregation, which murmur against me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against me. 28 Say unto them, As truly as I live, saith the Lord, as ye have spoken in mine ears, so will I do to you: 29 your carcases shall fall in this wilderness; and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, which have murmured against me, 30 doubtless ye shall not come into the land, concerning which I sware to make you dwell therein, save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun. 31 But your little ones, which ye said should be a prey, them will I bring in, and they shall know the land which ye have despised. 32 But as for you, your carcases, they shall fall in this wilderness. 33 And your children shall wander in the wilderness forty years, and bear your whoredoms, until your carcases be wasted in the wilderness. 34 After the number of the days in which ye searched the land, even forty days, each day for a year, shall ye bear your iniquities, even forty years, and ye shall know my breach of promise. 35 I the Lord have said, I will surely do it unto all this evil congregation, that are gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die. 36 And the men, which Moses sent to search the land, who returned, and made all the congregation to murmur against him, by bringing up a slander upon the land, 37 even those men that did bring up the evil report upon the land, died by the plague before the Lord. 38 But Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, which were of the men that went to search the land, lived still. 39 And Moses told these sayings unto all the children of Israel: and the people mourned greatly.

40 And they rose up early in the morning, and gat them up into the top of the mountain, saying, Lo, we be here, and will go up unto the place which the Lord hath promised: for we have sinned. 41 And Moses said, Wherefore now do ye transgress the commandment of the Lord? but it shall not prosper. 42 Go not up, for the Lord is not among you; that ye be not smitten before your enemies. 43 For the Amalekites and the Canaanites are there before you, and ye shall fall by the sword: because ye are turned away from the Lord, therefore the Lord will not be with you. 44 But they presumed to go up unto the hill top: nevertheless the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and Moses, departed not out of the camp. 45 Then the Amalekites came down, and the Canaanites which dwelt in that hill, and smote them, and discomfited them, even unto Hormah.

14 Då började folket att klaga och gråta högt och de fortsatte hela natten. 2 Israeliternas röster höjdes i en väldig klagokör mot Mose och Aron. ”Tänk om vi hade fått dö i Egypten”, klagade hela menigheten, ”eller åtminstone här i öknen! 3 Varför leder Herren oss in i det här landet? Vi kommer att dödas och våra hustrur och små barn kommer att tas som byte! Låt oss försöka komma härifrån och återvända till Egypten!”

4 De föreslog varandra: ”Vi väljer en ledare som kan föra oss tillbaka till Egypten!”

Mose ber för de upproriska

5 Då föll Mose och Aron ner på marken inför hela den församlade israelitiska menigheten med ansiktena mot jorden 6 och två av spejarna, Josua, Nuns son, och Kalev, Jefunnes son, rev sönder sina kläder 7 och sa till allt folket: ”Det är ett underbart land vi har vandrat igenom och utforskat! 8 Om Herren finner behag i oss, kommer han att hjälpa oss att komma in i landet som flyter av mjölk och honung och ge oss det. 9 Gör nu inte uppror mot Herren! Ni behöver inte vara rädda för folken som bor där! De blir en munsbit för oss! Deras beskydd är borta, men Herren är med oss. Hör nu upp med att vara rädda!”

10 Men hela menigheten hotade att stena dem. Då visade sig Herrens härlighet vid uppenbarelsetältet för alla israeliterna 11 och Herren sa till Mose: ”Hur länge tänker det här folket förakta mig? Kommer dessa människor aldrig att tro mig, trots alla de tecken som jag har gjort bland dem? 12 Jag ska slå dem med pest och utrota dem, men dig ska jag göra till ett folk, mycket större och mäktigare än de!”

13 ”Men vad ska egypterna tänka när de får höra talas om det?” frågade Mose Herren. ”Du har ju med din kraft fört ditt folk därifrån. 14 De kommer att berätta det för invånarna i det här landet. De har redan hört att du, Herre, finns mitt ibland detta folk och att du Herre visar dig för dem ansikte mot ansikte, att ditt moln finns över dem och att du går framför dem i molnpelaren på dagen och i eldpelaren på natten. 15 Om du nu dödar ditt folk, alla på en gång, kommer de andra folken som har hört talas om dig att säga: 16 ’Herren kunde inte leda dem in i det land som han med ed hade lovat att ge dem. Därför har han nu slaktat dem i öknen.’

17 Herre, visa nu din makt! Du har ju sagt: 18 ’Herren är sen till vrede och nådefull. Han förlåter synd och missgärning, men han kan inte låta den skyldige få vara ostraffad utan straffar föräldrarnas missgärningar på barnen ända till tredje och fjärde generationen.’ 19 Herre, förlåt folket dess synd, du som är så full av nåd! Förlåt dem så som du har förlåtit dem förut allt sedan de lämnade Egypten!”

Guds straff – fyrtio år i öknen

20 Då sa Herren: ”Jag ska förlåta dem som du har begärt. 21 Men jag lovar vid mitt eget namn så sant jag lever och lika visst som att hela jorden ska fyllas av Herrens härlighet 22 att ingen av dessa som sett min härlighet och alla de tecken jag gjort både i Egypten och i öknen men ändå tio gånger prövat mig och inte lytt mig, 23 ingen av dessa som föraktat mig ska få se det land som jag med ed lovat deras förfäder. 24 Men min tjänare Kalev har ett annat sinnelag och har lytt mig i allt. Honom ska jag leda in i det land han har utforskat och hans ättlingar ska ärva landet. 25 Amalekiterna och kanaanéerna bor i dalarna och ni ska i morgon vända tillbaka ut i öknen i riktning mot Sävhavet.”

26 Herren talade till Mose och Aron: 27 ”Hur länge tänker denna onda menighet fortsätta att klaga på mig? Jag har hört hur israeliterna knotar mot mig. 28 Men säg så här till dem: ’Så sant jag lever,’ säger Herren, ’jag ska göra just det jag hört er säga. 29 Ni kommer allesammans att dö här i öknen! Ingen enda av er inmönstrade som är tjugo år eller äldre och som har klagat på mig 30 ska få komma in i det land jag med ed utlovat er, utom Kalev, Jefunnes son, och Josua, Nuns son.

31 Ni sa att era barn skulle bli fiendens byte. Dem tänker jag föra in i landet och de ska njuta av det land som ni förkastade 32 och era döda kroppar ska bli kvar i öknen. 33 Och era barn ska bli herdar i öknen i fyrtio år och lida för er trolöshet ända tills den sista av er ligger död i öknen.

34 Spejarna var inne i landet i fyrtio dagar men ni ska tvingas vandra i öknen i fyrtio år, ett år för varje dag. Ni kommer att få bära bördan av er synd och inse vad det betyder att förkasta mig.’ 35 Jag Herren har talat. Jag ska sannerligen göra så med denna onda menighet, alla som varit med och sammansvurit sig mot mig. De ska möta sitt slut; de ska dö här i öknen.”

36 Spejarna som Mose hade skickat för att utforska landet och som vid sin återkomst hade förorsakat folkets knot mot Herren genom att tala illa om landet, 37 blev därefter straffade och dödade inför Herren, dessa som talat illa om landet. 38 Av dem som varit med om att utforska landet var det bara Josua och Kalev som fick leva. 39 Därefter blev det oerhörd sorg i hela lägret när Mose berättade detta för israeliterna.

Folket går vidare utan Gud

40 Nästa morgon gick de upp tidigt och började vandra mot höglandet.

”Här är vi nu!” sa de. ”Vi har syndat, men nu är vi beredda att fortsätta in i det land som Herren har lovat oss!”

41 ”Varför överträder ni Herrens befallning?” sa Mose. ”Ni kommer inte att lyckas. 42 Gå inte! Ni kommer att besegras av fienden för Herren är inte med er. 43 Amalekiterna och kanaanéerna kommer att möta er där och ni kommer att falla för deras svärd. Nu när ni har övergett Herren kommer han inte att vara med er.”

44 Men de fortsatte i sitt övermod in i bergsbygden trots att varken arken eller Mose hade lämnat lägret. 45 Då kom amalekiterna och kanaanéerna som bodde där bland bergen och anföll dem och förföljde dem till Horma.

The People Rebel

14 That night all the members of the community raised their voices and wept aloud.(A) 2 All the Israelites grumbled(B) against Moses and Aaron, and the whole assembly said to them, “If only we had died in Egypt!(C) Or in this wilderness!(D) 3 Why is the Lord bringing us to this land only to let us fall by the sword?(E) Our wives and children(F) will be taken as plunder.(G) Wouldn’t it be better for us to go back to Egypt?(H)” 4 And they said to each other, “We should choose a leader and go back to Egypt.(I)”

5 Then Moses and Aaron fell facedown(J) in front of the whole Israelite assembly(K) gathered there. 6 Joshua son of Nun(L) and Caleb son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had explored the land, tore their clothes(M) 7 and said to the entire Israelite assembly, “The land we passed through and explored is exceedingly good.(N) 8 If the Lord is pleased with us,(O) he will lead us into that land, a land flowing with milk and honey,(P) and will give it to us.(Q) 9 Only do not rebel(R) against the Lord. And do not be afraid(S) of the people of the land,(T) because we will devour them. Their protection is gone, but the Lord is with(U) us.(V) Do not be afraid of them.”(W)

10 But the whole assembly talked about stoning(X) them. Then the glory of the Lord(Y) appeared at the tent of meeting to all the Israelites. 11 The Lord said to Moses, “How long will these people treat me with contempt?(Z) How long will they refuse to believe in me,(AA) in spite of all the signs(AB) I have performed among them? 12 I will strike them down with a plague(AC) and destroy them, but I will make you into a nation(AD) greater and stronger than they.”(AE)

13 Moses said to the Lord, “Then the Egyptians will hear about it! By your power you brought these people up from among them.(AF) 14 And they will tell the inhabitants of this land about it. They have already heard(AG) that you, Lord, are with these people(AH) and that you, Lord, have been seen face to face,(AI) that your cloud stays over them,(AJ) and that you go before them in a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night.(AK) 15 If you put all these people to death, leaving none alive, the nations who have heard this report about you will say, 16 ‘The Lord was not able to bring these people into the land he promised them on oath,(AL) so he slaughtered them in the wilderness.’(AM)

17 “Now may the Lord’s strength be displayed, just as you have declared: 18 ‘The Lord is slow to anger, abounding in love and forgiving sin and rebellion.(AN) Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation.’(AO) 19 In accordance with your great love, forgive(AP) the sin of these people,(AQ) just as you have pardoned them from the time they left Egypt until now.”(AR)

20 The Lord replied, “I have forgiven them,(AS) as you asked. 21 Nevertheless, as surely as I live(AT) and as surely as the glory of the Lord(AU) fills the whole earth,(AV) 22 not one of those who saw my glory and the signs(AW) I performed in Egypt and in the wilderness but who disobeyed me and tested me ten times(AX)— 23 not one of them will ever see the land I promised on oath(AY) to their ancestors. No one who has treated me with contempt(AZ) will ever see it.(BA) 24 But because my servant Caleb(BB) has a different spirit and follows me wholeheartedly,(BC) I will bring him into the land he went to, and his descendants will inherit it.(BD) 25 Since the Amalekites(BE) and the Canaanites(BF) are living in the valleys, turn(BG) back tomorrow and set out toward the desert along the route to the Red Sea.[a](BH)”

26 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron: 27 “How long will this wicked community grumble against me? I have heard the complaints of these grumbling Israelites.(BI) 28 So tell them, ‘As surely as I live,(BJ) declares the Lord, I will do to you(BK) the very thing I heard you say: 29 In this wilderness your bodies will fall(BL)—every one of you twenty years old or more(BM) who was counted in the census(BN) and who has grumbled against me. 30 Not one of you will enter the land(BO) I swore with uplifted hand(BP) to make your home, except Caleb son of Jephunneh(BQ) and Joshua son of Nun.(BR) 31 As for your children that you said would be taken as plunder, I will bring them in to enjoy the land you have rejected.(BS) 32 But as for you, your bodies will fall(BT) in this wilderness. 33 Your children will be shepherds here for forty years,(BU) suffering for your unfaithfulness, until the last of your bodies lies in the wilderness. 34 For forty years(BV)—one year for each of the forty days you explored the land(BW)—you will suffer for your sins and know what it is like to have me against you.’ 35 I, the Lord, have spoken, and I will surely do these things(BX) to this whole wicked community, which has banded together against me. They will meet their end in this wilderness; here they will die.(BY)”

36 So the men Moses had sent(BZ) to explore the land, who returned and made the whole community grumble(CA) against him by spreading a bad report(CB) about it— 37 these men who were responsible for spreading the bad report(CC) about the land were struck down and died of a plague(CD) before the Lord. 38 Of the men who went to explore the land,(CE) only Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh survived.(CF)

39 When Moses reported this(CG) to all the Israelites, they mourned(CH) bitterly. 40 Early the next morning they set out for the highest point in the hill country,(CI) saying, “Now we are ready to go up to the land the Lord promised. Surely we have sinned!(CJ)”

41 But Moses said, “Why are you disobeying the Lord’s command? This will not succeed!(CK) 42 Do not go up, because the Lord is not with you. You will be defeated by your enemies,(CL) 43 for the Amalekites(CM) and the Canaanites(CN) will face you there. Because you have turned away from the Lord, he will not be with you(CO) and you will fall by the sword.”

44 Nevertheless, in their presumption they went up(CP) toward the highest point in the hill country, though neither Moses nor the ark of the Lord’s covenant moved from the camp.(CQ) 45 Then the Amalekites and the Canaanites(CR) who lived in that hill country(CS) came down and attacked them and beat them down all the way to Hormah.(CT)
