²⁰ The Lord replied, “I have forgiven them,^(A) as you asked. ²¹ Nevertheless, as surely as I live^(B) and as surely as the glory of the Lord^(C) fills the whole earth,^{(D) 22} not one of those who saw my glory and the signs^(E) I performed in Egypt and in the wilderness but who disobeyed me and tested me ten times^(F)— ²³ not one of them will ever see the land I promised on oath^(G) to their ancestors. No one who has treated me with contempt^(H) will ever see it.^(I)

³⁴ When the Lord heard^(A) what you said, he was angry^(B) and solemnly swore:^{(C) 35} “No one from this evil generation shall see the good land^(D) I swore to give your ancestors, ³⁶ except Caleb^(E) son of Jephunneh. He will see it, and I will give him and his descendants the land he set his feet on, because he followed the Lord wholeheartedly.^(F)”

³ Now we who have believed enter that rest, just as God has said,

And yet his works have been finished since the creation of the world.

⁵ And again in the passage above he says, “They shall never enter my rest.”^(A)

⁹ since you have not yet reached the resting place^(A) and the inheritance^(B) the Lord your God is giving you. ¹⁰ But you will cross the Jordan and settle in the land the Lord your God is giving^(C) you as an inheritance, and he will give you rest^(D) from all your enemies around you so that you will live in safety.
