13 Jehovah now instructed Moses, 2 “Send spies into the land of Canaan—the land I am giving to Israel; send one leader from each tribe.”
3-15 (The Israelis were camped in the wilderness of Paran at the time.) Moses did as the Lord had commanded and sent these twelve tribal leaders:
Shammua, son of Zaccur, from the tribe of Reuben;
Shaphat, son of Hori, from the tribe of Simeon;
Caleb, son of Jephunneh, from the tribe of Judah;
Igal, son of Joseph, from the tribe of Issachar;
Hoshea,[a] son of Nun, from the half-tribe of Ephraim;
Palti, son of Raphu, from the tribe of Benjamin;
Gaddiel, son of Sodi, from the tribe of Zebulun;
Gaddi, son of Susi, from the tribe of Joseph (actually, the half-tribe of Manasseh);
Ammiel, son of Gemalli, from the tribe of Dan;
Sethur, son of Michael, from the tribe of Asher;
Nahbi, son of Vophsi, from the tribe of Naphtali;
Geuel, son of Machi, from the tribe of Gad.
16 It was at this time that Moses changed Hoshea’s name to Joshua.[b]
17 Moses sent them out with these instructions: “Go northward into the hill country of the Negeb, 18 and see what the land is like; see also what the people are like who live there, whether they are strong or weak, many or few; 19 and whether the land is fertile or not; and what cities there are, and whether they are villages or are fortified; 20 whether the land is rich or poor, and whether there are many trees. Don’t be afraid, and bring back some samples of the crops you see.” (The first of the grapes were being harvested at that time.)
21 So they spied out the land all the way from the wilderness of Zin to Rehob near Hamath. 22 Going northward, they passed first through the Negeb and arrived at Hebron. There they saw the Ahimanites, Sheshites, and Talmites, all families descended from Anak. (By the way, Hebron was very ancient, having been founded seven years before Tanis[c] in Egypt.) 23 Then they came to what is now known as the valley of Eshcol where they cut down a single cluster of grapes so large that it took two of them to carry it on a pole between them! They also took some samples of the pomegranates and figs. 24 The Israelis named the valley “Eshcol” at that time (meaning “Cluster”) because of the cluster of grapes they found!
25 After forty days of exploration they returned from their tour. 26 They made their report to Moses, Aaron, and all the people of Israel in the wilderness of Paran at Kadesh, and they showed the fruit they had brought with them.
27 This was their report: “We arrived in the land you sent us to see, and it is indeed a magnificent country—a land ‘flowing with milk and honey.’ Here is some fruit we have brought as proof. 28 But the people living there are powerful, and their cities are fortified and very large; and what’s more, we saw Anakim giants there! 29 The Amalekites live in the south, while in the hill country there are the Hittites, Jebusites, and Amorites; down along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea and in the Jordan River Valley are the Canaanites.”
30 But Caleb reassured the people as they stood before Moses. “Let us go up at once and possess it,” he said, “for we are well able to conquer it!”
31 “Not against people as strong as they are!” the other spies said. “They would crush us!”
32 So the majority report of the spies was negative: “The land is full of warriors, the people are powerfully built, 33 and we saw some of the Anakim there, descendants of the ancient race of giants. We felt like grasshoppers before them, they were so tall!”

25 過了四十天，他們打探完畢，返回營地。 26 他們來到巴蘭曠野的加低斯向摩西、亞倫和以色列全體會眾彙報，把當地的果子給大家看。 27 他們對摩西說：「我們照你的指示打探了那地方，果然是奶蜜之鄉，這些都是那裡的果子。 28 但那裡的居民很強悍，城邑又大又堅固。我們在那裡還見到亞衲人的子孫。 29 亞瑪力人住在南地，赫人、耶布斯人和亞摩利人住在山區，迦南人住在海邊和約旦河沿岸。」 30 迦勒讓站在摩西面前的民眾安靜，然後說：「我們立刻去佔領那地方吧！我們必能取勝。」 31 跟他一起去打探的人卻說：「我們不能去攻打那些人，他們比我們強大。」 32 他們還危言聳聽，說：「我們去打探的地方是吞吃居民之地，我們看見的人個個身材高大。 33 我們在那裡看見了亞衲人的子孫，他們是巨人的後裔，我們跟他們相比就像蚱蜢，他們看我們也像蚱蜢。」

13 The Lord said to Moses, 2 “Send some men to explore(A) the land of Canaan,(B) which I am giving to the Israelites.(C) From each ancestral tribe(D) send one of its leaders.”
3 So at the Lord’s command Moses sent them out from the Desert of Paran. All of them were leaders of the Israelites.(E) 4 These are their names:
from the tribe of Reuben, Shammua son of Zakkur;
5 from the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat son of Hori;
6 from the tribe of Judah, Caleb son of Jephunneh;(F)
7 from the tribe of Issachar, Igal son of Joseph;
8 from the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea son of Nun;(G)
9 from the tribe of Benjamin, Palti son of Raphu;
10 from the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel son of Sodi;
11 from the tribe of Manasseh (a tribe of Joseph), Gaddi son of Susi;
12 from the tribe of Dan, Ammiel son of Gemalli;
13 from the tribe of Asher, Sethur son of Michael;
14 from the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi son of Vophsi;
15 from the tribe of Gad, Geuel son of Maki.
16 These are the names of the men Moses sent to explore(H) the land. (Moses gave Hoshea son of Nun(I) the name Joshua.)(J)
17 When Moses sent them to explore Canaan,(K) he said, “Go up through the Negev(L) and on into the hill country.(M) 18 See what the land is like and whether the people who live there are strong or weak, few or many. 19 What kind of land do they live in? Is it good or bad? What kind of towns do they live in? Are they unwalled or fortified? 20 How is the soil? Is it fertile or poor? Are there trees in it or not? Do your best to bring back some of the fruit of the land.(N)” (It was the season for the first ripe grapes.)(O)
21 So they went up and explored the land from the Desert of Zin(P) as far as Rehob,(Q) toward Lebo Hamath.(R) 22 They went up through the Negev and came to Hebron,(S) where Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai,(T) the descendants of Anak,(U) lived. (Hebron had been built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)(V) 23 When they reached the Valley of Eshkol,[a](W) they cut off a branch bearing a single cluster of grapes. Two of them carried it on a pole between them, along with some pomegranates(X) and figs.(Y) 24 That place was called the Valley of Eshkol because of the cluster of grapes the Israelites cut off there. 25 At the end of forty days(Z) they returned from exploring the land.(AA)
Report on the Exploration
26 They came back to Moses and Aaron and the whole Israelite community at Kadesh(AB) in the Desert of Paran.(AC) There they reported to them(AD) and to the whole assembly and showed them the fruit of the land.(AE) 27 They gave Moses this account: “We went into the land to which you sent us, and it does flow with milk and honey!(AF) Here is its fruit.(AG) 28 But the people who live there are powerful, and the cities are fortified and very large.(AH) We even saw descendants of Anak(AI) there.(AJ) 29 The Amalekites(AK) live in the Negev; the Hittites,(AL) Jebusites(AM) and Amorites(AN) live in the hill country;(AO) and the Canaanites(AP) live near the sea and along the Jordan.(AQ)”
30 Then Caleb(AR) silenced the people before Moses and said, “We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it.”
31 But the men who had gone up with him said, “We can’t attack those people; they are stronger than we are.”(AS) 32 And they spread among the Israelites a bad report(AT) about the land they had explored. They said, “The land we explored devours(AU) those living in it. All the people we saw there are of great size.(AV) 33 We saw the Nephilim(AW) there (the descendants of Anak(AX) come from the Nephilim). We seemed like grasshoppers(AY) in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them.”

«Subid de aquí al Neguev y luego subid al monte. 18 Observad cómo es la tierra y el pueblo que la habita, si es fuerte o débil, escaso o numeroso; 19 cómo es la tierra habitada, si es buena o mala; cómo son las ciudades habitadas, si son campamentos o plazas fortificadas, 20 y cómo es el terreno, si es fértil o estéril, si en él hay árboles o no. Esforzaos y traed de los frutos del país.»
Era el tiempo de las primeras uvas. 21 Ellos subieron y reconocieron la tierra desde el desierto de Zin hasta Rehob, junto a la entrada de Hamat. 22 Subieron al Neguev y llegaron hasta Hebrón. Allí vivían Ahimán, Sesai y Talmai, hijos de Anac. Hebrón fue edificada siete años antes de Zoán en Egipto. 23 Llegaron hasta el arroyo Escol y allí cortaron un sarmiento con un racimo de uvas, el cual llevaron entre dos en un palo, y también granados e higos. 24 Y se llamó aquel lugar el valle del Escol, por el racimo que allí cortaron los hijos de Israel.
25 Al cabo de cuarenta días regresaron de reconocer la tierra. 26 Fueron y se presentaron ante Moisés, Aarón y toda la congregación de los hijos de Israel, en el desierto de Parán, en Cades. Les dieron la información a ellos y a toda la congregación, y les mostraron los frutos de la tierra. 27 También les contaron:
«Nosotros llegamos a la tierra a la cual nos enviaste, la que ciertamente fluye leche y miel; éstos son sus frutos. 28 Pero el pueblo que habita aquella tierra es fuerte, y las ciudades muy grandes y fortificadas; también vimos allí a los hijos de Anac. 29 Amalec habita el Neguev; el heteo, el jebuseo y el amorreo habitan en el monte; el cananeo habita junto al mar y a la ribera del Jordán.»
30 Entonces Caleb hizo callar al pueblo delante de Moisés, y dijo:
—Subamos luego, y tomemos posesión de ella, porque más podremos nosotros que ellos.
31 Pero los hombres que subieron con él dijeron:
—No podemos subir contra aquel pueblo, porque es más fuerte que nosotros.
32 Y hablaron mal entre los hijos de Israel de la tierra que habían reconocido, diciendo:
—La tierra que recorrimos y exploramos es tierra que se traga a sus habitantes. Todo el pueblo que vimos en medio de ella es gente de gran estatura. 33 También vimos allí gigantes, hijos de Anac, raza de los gigantes. Nosotros éramos, a nuestro parecer, como langostas, y así les parecíamos a ellos.

23 And they came unto the brook of Eshcol, and cut down from thence a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they bare it between two upon a staff; and they brought of the pomegranates, and of the figs.
24 The place was called the brook Eshcol, because of the cluster of grapes which the children of Israel cut down from thence.
25 And they returned from searching of the land after forty days.
26 And they went and came to Moses, and to Aaron, and to all the congregation of the children of Israel, unto the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back word unto them, and unto all the congregation, and shewed them the fruit of the land.
27 And they told him, and said, We came unto the land whither thou sentest us, and surely it floweth with milk and honey; and this is the fruit of it.
28 Nevertheless the people be strong that dwell in the land, and the cities are walled, and very great: and moreover we saw the children of Anak there.
29 The Amalekites dwell in the land of the south: and the Hittites, and the Jebusites, and the Amorites, dwell in the mountains: and the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and by the coast of Jordan.
30 And Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it.
31 But the men that went up with him said, We be not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we.
32 And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had searched unto the children of Israel, saying, The land, through which we have gone to search it, is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of a great stature.
33 And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.
