The People Complain
11 Now (A)when the people complained, it displeased the Lord; (B)for the Lord heard it, and His anger was aroused. So the (C)fire of the Lord burned among them, and consumed some in the outskirts of the camp. 2 Then the people (D)cried out to Moses, and when Moses (E)prayed to the Lord, the fire was [a]quenched. 3 So he called the name of the place [b]Taberah, because the fire of the Lord had burned among them.
4 Now the (F)mixed multitude who were among them [c]yielded to (G)intense craving; so the children of Israel also wept again and said: (H)“Who will give us meat to eat? 5 (I)We remember the fish which we ate freely in Egypt, the cucumbers, the melons, the leeks, the onions, and the garlic; 6 but now (J)our whole being is dried up; there is nothing at all except this manna before our eyes!”
7 Now (K)the manna was like coriander seed, and its color like the color of bdellium. 8 The people went about and gathered it, ground it on millstones or beat it in the mortar, cooked it in pans, and made cakes of it; and (L)its taste was like the taste of pastry prepared with oil. 9 And (M)when the dew fell on the camp in the night, the manna fell on it.
10 Then Moses heard the people weeping throughout their families, everyone at the door of his tent; and (N)the anger of the Lord was greatly aroused; Moses also was displeased. 11 (O)So Moses said to the Lord, “Why have You afflicted Your servant? And why have I not found favor in Your sight, that You have laid the [d]burden of all these people on me? 12 Did I conceive all these people? Did I beget them, that You should say to me, (P)‘Carry them in your bosom, as a (Q)guardian carries a nursing child,’ to the land which You (R)swore[e] to their fathers? 13 (S)Where am I to get meat to give to all these people? For they weep all over me, saying, ‘Give us meat, that we may eat.’ 14 (T)I am not able to bear all these people alone, because the burden is too heavy for me. 15 If You treat me like this, please kill me here and now—if I have found favor in Your sight—and (U)do not let me see my wretchedness!”
The Seventy Elders
16 So the Lord said to Moses: “Gather to Me (V)seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom you know to be the elders of the people and (W)officers over them; bring them to the tabernacle of meeting, that they may stand there with you. 17 Then I will come down and talk with you there. (X)I will take of the Spirit that is upon you and will put the same upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with you, that you may not bear it yourself alone. 18 Then you shall say to the people, [f]‘Consecrate yourselves for tomorrow, and you shall eat meat; for you have wept (Y)in the hearing of the Lord, saying, “Who will give us meat to eat? For it was well with us in Egypt.” Therefore the Lord will give you meat, and you shall eat. 19 You shall eat, not one day, nor two days, nor five days, nor ten days, nor twenty days, 20 (Z)but for a whole month, until it comes out of your nostrils and becomes loathsome to you, because you have (AA)despised the Lord who is among you, and have wept before Him, saying, (AB)“Why did we ever come up out of Egypt?” ’ ”
21 And Moses said, (AC)“The people whom I am among are six hundred thousand men on foot; yet You have said, ‘I will give them meat, that they may eat for a whole month.’ 22 (AD)Shall flocks and herds be slaughtered for them, to provide enough for them? Or shall all the fish of the sea be gathered together for them, to provide enough for them?”
23 And the Lord said to Moses, (AE)“Has[g] the Lord’s arm been shortened? Now you shall see whether (AF)what I say will happen to you or not.”
24 So Moses went out and told the people the words of the Lord, and he (AG)gathered the seventy men of the elders of the people and placed them around the tabernacle. 25 Then the Lord came down in the cloud, and spoke to him, and took of the Spirit that was upon him, and placed the same upon the seventy elders; and it happened, (AH)when the Spirit rested upon them, that (AI)they prophesied, [h]although they never did so again.
26 But two men had remained in the camp: the name of one was Eldad, and the name of the other Medad. And the Spirit rested upon them. Now they were among those listed, but who (AJ)had not gone out to the tabernacle; yet they prophesied in the camp. 27 And a young man ran and told Moses, and said, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.”
28 So Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ assistant, one of his choice men, answered and said, “Moses my lord, (AK)forbid them!”
29 Then Moses said to him, “Are you [i]zealous for my sake? (AL)Oh, that all the Lord’s people were prophets and that the Lord would put His Spirit upon them!” 30 And Moses returned to the camp, he and the elders of Israel.
The Lord Sends Quail
31 Now a (AM)wind went out from the Lord, and it brought quail from the sea and left them fluttering near the camp, about a day’s journey on this side and about a day’s journey on the other side, all around the camp, and about two cubits above the surface of the ground. 32 And the people stayed up all that day, all night, and all the next day, and gathered the quail (he who gathered least gathered ten (AN)homers); and they spread them out for themselves all around the camp. 33 But while the (AO)meat was still between their teeth, before it was chewed, the wrath of the Lord was aroused against the people, and the Lord struck the people with a very great plague. 34 So he called the name of that place [j]Kibroth Hattaavah, because there they buried the people who had yielded to craving.
35 (AP)From Kibroth Hattaavah the people moved to Hazeroth, and camped at Hazeroth.

11 1 The people murmureth, and is punished with fire. 4 The people lusteth after flesh. 6 They loathe Manna. 11 The weak faith of Moses. 16 The Lord divided the burden of Moses to seventy of the Ancients. 31 The Lord sendeth quails. 33 Their lust is punished.
1 When the people became [a]murmurers, [b]it displeased the Lord: and the Lord heard it, therefore his wrath was kindled, and the fire of the Lord burnt among them, and (A)consumed the utmost part of the host.
2 Then the people cried unto Moses: and when Moses prayed unto the Lord, the fire was quenched.
3 And he called the name of the place [c]Taberah, because the fire of the Lord burnt among them.
4 ¶ And a number of [d]people that was among them, fell a lusting, and [e]turned away, and the children of Israel also wept, and said, Who shall give us flesh to eat?
5 We remember the fish which we did eat in Egypt for [f]nought, the cucumbers, and the pepons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlic.
6 But now our soul is [g]dried away, we can see nothing but this Manna.
7 (The Manna also was as (B)coriander seed, and his color like the color of [h]bdellium.
8 The people went about and gathered, and ground it in mills, or beat it in mortars, and baked it in a cauldron, and made cakes of it, and the taste of it was like unto the taste of fresh oil.
9 And when the dew fell down upon the host in night, the Manna fell with it.)
10 ¶ Then Moses heard the people weep throughout their families, every man in the door of his tent, and the wrath of the Lord was grievously kindled: also Moses was grieved.
11 And Moses said unto the Lord, Wherefore hast thou [i]vexed thy servant? and why have I not found [j]favor in thy sight, seeing thou hast put the charge of all this people upon me?
12 Have I [k]conceived all this people? or have I begotten them, that thou shouldest say unto me, Carry them in thy bosom (as a nurse beareth the sucking child) unto the [l]land, for the which thou swarest unto their fathers?
13 Where should I have flesh to give unto all this people? for they weep unto me, saying, Give us flesh that we may eat.
14 I am not able to bear all this people alone, for it is too heavy for me.
15 Therefore if thou deal thus with me, I pray thee, if I have found favor in thy [m]sight, kill me, that I behold not my misery.
16 ¶ Then the Lord said unto Moses, Gather unto me seventy men of the Elders of Israel, whom thou knowest, that they are the Elders of the people, and governors over them, and bring them unto the Tabernacle of the Congregation, and let them stand there with thee.
17 And I will come down, and talk with thee there, [n]and take of the Spirit, which is upon thee, and put upon them, and they shall bear the burden of the people with thee: so thou shalt not bear it alone.
18 Furthermore thou shalt say unto the people, [o]Be sanctified against tomorrow, and ye shall eat flesh: for you have wept in the ears of the Lord, saying, Who shall give us flesh to eat? for we were better in Egypt: therefore the Lord will give you flesh, and ye shall eat.
19 Ye shall not eat one day nor two days, nor five days, neither ten days, nor twenty days,
20 But a whole month, until it come out at your nostrils, and be loathsome unto you, because ye have [p]contemned the Lord, which is [q]among you, and have wept before him, saying, Why came we hither out of Egypt?
21 And Moses said, Six hundred thousand footmen are there of the people, [r]among whom I am: and thou sayest, I will give them flesh, that they may eat a month long.
22 Shall the sheep and the beeves be slain for them to find them? either shall all the fish of the Sea be gathered together for them to suffice them?
23 And the Lord said unto Moses, Is (C)the Lord’s hand shortened? thou shalt see now whether my word shall come to pass unto thee, or no.
24 ¶ So Moses went out, and told the people the words of the Lord, and gathered seventy men of the Elders of the people, and set them round about the Tabernacle.
25 Then the Lord came down in a cloud, and spake unto him, and [s]took of the Spirit that was upon him, and put it upon the seventy Ancient men: and when the Spirit rested upon them, then they prophesied, and did not [t]cease.
26 But there remained two of the men in the host: the name of the one was Eldad, and the name of the other Medad, and the Spirit rested upon them, (for they were of them that were written, and went not out unto the Tabernacle) and they prophesied in the host.
27 Then there ran a young man, and told Moses, and said, Eldad and Medad do prophesy in the host.
28 And Joshua the son of Nun the servant of Moses one of his [u]young men answered and said, My lord Moses, [v]forbid them.
29 But Moses said unto him, Enviest thou for my sake? yea, would God that all the Lord’s people were Prophets, and that the Lord would put his spirit upon them.
30 And Moses returned into the host, he and the Elders of Israel.
31 Then there went forth a wind from the Lord, and (D)brought quails from the sea, and let them fall upon the camp, a day’s journey on this side, and a day’s journey on the other side, round about the host, and they were about two cubits above the earth.
32 Then the people arose, all that day, and all the night, and all the next day, and gathered the quails: he that gathered the least, gathered ten [w]Homers full, and they spread them abroad for their use round about the host.
33 While the flesh was yet between their teeth, before it was chewed, even the wrath of the Lord was kindled against the people, and the Lord (E)smote the people with an exceeding great plague.
34 So the name of the place was called, [x]Kibroth Hattaavah: for there they buried the people that fell a lusting.
35 From Kibroth Hattaavah the people took their journey to Hazeroth, and abode at Hazeroth.

11 Lúc bấy giờ dân chúng phàn nàn với CHÚA về những nỗi khổ cực của mình. Khi nghe được, CHÚA liền nổi giận. Lửa từ CHÚA giáng xuống cháy giữa dân chúng ở ven doanh trại. 2 Dân chúng kêu la cùng Mô-se, ông liền cầu xin cùng CHÚA, nên lửa ngưng cháy. 3 Vì thế chỗ đó được gọi là Ta-bê-ra [a], vì lửa từ CHÚA cháy giữa vòng họ.
Bảy mươi bô lão giúp đỡ Mô-se
4 Có mấy người trong vòng họ kêu ca đòi thức ăn ngon hơn. Chẳng bao lâu sau, cả dân Ít-ra-en bắt đầu phàn nàn. Họ đòi, “Chúng tôi muốn ăn thịt! 5 Chúng tôi nhớ lại hồi còn ở Ai-cập tha hồ ăn cá. Lúc đó cũng có dưa leo, dưa hấu, hẹ, hành và tỏi. 6 Nhưng bây giờ chúng tôi chẳng có gì ăn cả; ngày nào cũng chỉ thấy ma-na!” 7 Ma-na giống như hột ngò, màu trắng ngà. 8 Dân chúng đi ra lượm rồi xay hay giã. Sau đó họ nấu trong nồi hoặc làm bánh. Ăn giống như bánh mì nướng tẩm dầu. 9 Ban đêm khi sương rơi xuống trên doanh trại thì ma-na cũng xuống.
10 Mô-se nghe mọi gia đình đứng nơi cửa lều họ than van. CHÚA nổi giận còn Mô-se rất bực tức. 11 Ông cầu hỏi CHÚA, “Sao Ngài mang chuyện rắc rối nầy đến cho con, kẻ tôi tớ Ngài? Con có làm gì quấy đâu mà Ngài bắt con chịu trách nhiệm về dân nầy? 12 Con không phải cha của họ vì con đâu có sinh họ ra. Tại sao Ngài bảo con mang họ vào xứ Ngài hứa ban cho tổ tiên chúng con? Con phải bồng ẵm họ trong tay như con nít sao? 13 Con kiếm thịt ở đâu ra cho họ đây? Họ cứ kêu nài với con: Chúng tôi muốn ăn thịt! 14 Con không thể nào một mình lo nổi cho dân nầy được nữa. Quá sức chịu đựng của con rồi. 15 Nếu Ngài còn bắt con chịu như thế nầy nữa, thì chẳng thà Ngài giết con bây giờ đi. Nếu con được ơn trước mặt Ngài thì xin giết con đi để con khỏi phải gặp cảnh khổ thế nầy nữa.”
16 CHÚA bảo Mô-se, “Hãy mang đến cho ta bảy mươi bô lão Ít-ra-en, những người mà con biết có khả năng lãnh đạo dân chúng. Mang họ đến Lều Họp rồi bảo họ đứng đó với con. 17 Ta sẽ ngự xuống nói chuyện cùng con tại đó. Ta sẽ lấy một phần Thần linh có trong con để ban cho họ. Họ sẽ giúp con lo cho dân chúng để con khỏi phải gánh vác một mình.
18 Hãy bảo dân chúng như sau: Hãy dọn mình cho thánh sạch vì ngày mai các ngươi sẽ được ăn thịt. Các ngươi kêu xin cùng CHÚA, ‘Chúng tôi muốn ăn thịt! Hồi ở Ai-cập chúng tôi sướng hơn!’ Cho nên bây giờ CHÚA sẽ cho các ngươi ăn thịt. 19 Các ngươi sẽ có thịt ăn không những một, hai, năm, mười hay hai mươi ngày, 20 nhưng các ngươi sẽ ăn thịt nguyên cả tháng. Các ngươi sẽ ăn thịt nhiều đến nỗi tràn ra lỗ mũi và các ngươi sẽ ngán nó. Vì các ngươi đã từ bỏ CHÚA là Đấng ở với các ngươi. Các ngươi cũng đã kêu khóc cùng Ngài rằng: Tại sao chúng ta rời Ai-cập làm gì?”
21 Mô-se thưa, “Lạy CHÚA, ở đây có sáu trăm ngàn người đứng quanh con mà Ngài nói, ‘Ta sẽ cho họ đủ thịt ăn trong một tháng!’ 22 Dù cho chúng ta giết hết tất cả các bầy gia súc cũng không đủ thịt nữa. Hay nếu chúng ta bắt hết cá dưới biển cũng không đủ nữa.”
23 Nhưng CHÚA bảo Mô-se, “Con tưởng ta yếu ớt lắm sao? Bây giờ con sẽ thấy ta thực hiện lời ta nói.”
24 Vậy Mô-se đi ra thuật lại cho dân chúng điều CHÚA nói. Ông tập họp bảy mươi bô lão lại, bảo họ đứng quanh Lều. 25 Rồi CHÚA ngự xuống trong đám mây và nói chuyện với Mô-se. CHÚA lấy một phần Thần linh trong Mô-se ban cho bảy mươi bô lão. Nhờ Thần linh trong họ, họ nói tiên tri [b], nhưng chỉ có một lần đó thôi.
26 Có hai người tên Ên-đát và Mê-đát cũng được liệt vào hàng bô lão nhưng họ không đi đến Lều. Họ ở trong trại nhưng cũng được ban cho Thần linh, nên họ nói tiên tri trong doanh trại. 27 Có một thanh niên chạy đến mách với Mô-se, “Ên-đát và Mê-đát đang nói tiên tri trong doanh trại.”
28 Giô-suê, con của Nun nói, “Mô-se, thầy con ơi, xin ngăn cấm họ!” Từ khi còn trẻ Giô-suê đã làm phụ tá cho Mô-se.
29 Nhưng Mô-se đáp, “Con ganh tức giùm ta sao? Ta mong tất cả các con dân CHÚA đều nói tiên tri. Ta mong CHÚA ban Thần linh cho tất cả mọi người!” 30 Rồi Mô-se và các lãnh đạo trở về doanh trại.
Chúa sai chim cút đến
31 CHÚA sai một ngọn gió mạnh từ biển thổi chim cút vào khu vực quanh doanh trại. Chim cút nhiều khoảng một thước chiều cao trên mặt đất và rộng khoảng một ngày đường dù bất cứ đi hướng nào. 32 Ngày đó, đêm đó và cả hôm sau, dân chúng đi ra lượm chim cút. Mỗi người lượm được ít nhất sáu mươi thùng nên họ trải ra phơi quanh doanh trại.
33 Nhưng CHÚA nổi giận, Ngài khiến họ bị bệnh khủng khiếp trong khi thịt còn trong miệng. 34 Cho nên dân chúng gọi chỗ đó là Ki-bơ-rốt Hát-ta-va [c], vì là chỗ họ chôn cất những ngươi đòi ăn thịt.
35 Từ Ki-bơ-rốt Hát-ta-va, dân chúng đi đến ở lại Ha-xê-rốt.
