The Silver Trumpets
10 The Lord spoke further to Moses, saying, 2 “Make yourself two trumpets of silver, of hammered work you shall make them; and you shall use them for (A)summoning the congregation and for having the camps set out. 3 (B)When both are blown, all the congregation shall gather themselves to you at the doorway of the tent of meeting. 4 Yet if only one is blown, then the (C)leaders, the heads of the [a]divisions of Israel, shall assemble before you. 5 But when you blow an alarm, the camps that are pitched (D)on the east side shall set out. 6 When you blow an alarm the second time, the camps that are pitched on (E)the south side shall set out; an alarm is to be blown for them to set out. 7 When convening the assembly, however, you shall blow without (F)sounding an alarm. 8 (G)The priestly sons of Aaron, moreover, shall blow the trumpets; and [b]this shall be for you a perpetual statute throughout your generations. 9 When you go to war in your land against the adversary who (H)attacks you, then you shall sound an alarm with the trumpets, that you may be (I)remembered before the Lord your God, and be saved from your enemies. 10 Also in the day of your gladness and in your appointed [c]feasts, and on the first days of your months, (J)you shall blow the trumpets over your burnt offerings, and over the sacrifices of your peace offerings; and they shall be as a reminder of you before your God. I am the Lord your God.”
The Tribes Leave Sinai
11 Now in (K)the second year, in the second month, on the twentieth of the month, the cloud was lifted from over the [d]tabernacle of the testimony; 12 and the sons of Israel set out on (L)their journeys from the wilderness of Sinai. Then the cloud settled down in the (M)wilderness of Paran. 13 (N)So they moved out for the first time according to the [e]commandment of the Lord through Moses. 14 The standard of the camp of the sons of Judah, according to their armies, (O)set out first, with Nahshon the son of Amminadab, over its army, 15 and Nethanel the son of Zuar, over the tribal army of the sons of Issachar; 16 and Eliab the son of Helon over the tribal army of the sons of Zebulun.
17 (P)Then the tabernacle was taken down; and the sons of Gershon and the sons of Merari, who were carrying the tabernacle, set out. 18 Next (Q)the standard of the camp of Reuben, according to their armies, set out with Elizur the son of Shedeur, over its army, 19 and Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai over the tribal army of the sons of Simeon, 20 and Eliasaph the son of Deuel was over the tribal army of the sons of Gad.
21 (R)Then the Kohathites set out, carrying the holy objects; and (S)the tabernacle was set up before their arrival. 22 (T)Next the standard of the camp of the sons of Ephraim, according to their armies, was set out, with Elishama the son of Ammihud over its army, 23 and Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur over the tribal army of the sons of Manasseh; 24 and Abidan the son of Gideoni over the tribal army of the sons of Benjamin.
25 (U)Then the standard of the camp of the sons of Dan, according to their armies, which formed the (V)rear guard for all the camps, set out, with Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai over its army, 26 and Pagiel the son of Ochran over the tribal army of the sons of Asher; 27 and Ahira the son of Enan over the tribal army of the sons of Naphtali. 28 [f]This was the order of march of the sons of Israel by their armies as they set out.
29 Then Moses said to (W)Hobab the son of (X)Reuel the Midianite, Moses’ father-in-law, “We are setting out to the place of which the Lord said, ‘(Y)I will give it to you’; (Z)come with us and we will do you good, for the Lord (AA)has [g]promised good concerning Israel.” 30 But he said to him, “(AB)I will not come, but rather will go to my own land and relatives.” 31 Then he said, “Please do not leave us, inasmuch as you know where we should camp in the wilderness, and you (AC)will be as eyes for us. 32 So it will be, if you go with us, that [h](AD)whatever good the Lord [i]does for us, (AE)we will [j]do for you.”
33 (AF)Thus they set out from the mount of the Lord three days’ journey, with (AG)the ark of the covenant of the Lord journeying in front of them for the [k]three days, to seek out (AH)a resting place for them. 34 (AI)The cloud of the Lord was over them by day when they set out from the camp.
35 Then it came about when the ark set out that Moses said,
“(AJ)Rise up, O Lord!
And let Your enemies be scattered,
And let those (AK)who hate You flee [l]before You.”
36 When it came to rest, he said,
The People Complain
11 Now the people became like (AN)those who complain of adversity (AO)in the hearing of the Lord; and when the Lord heard it, His anger was kindled, and the fire of the Lord burned among them and consumed some of the outskirts of the camp. 2 (AP)The people therefore cried out to Moses, and Moses prayed to the Lord and the fire [m]died out. 3 So the name of that place was called [n](AQ)Taberah, because the fire of the Lord burned among them.
4 The (AR)rabble who were among them [o]had greedy desires; and also the sons of Israel wept again and said, “(AS)Who will give us [p]meat to eat? 5 (AT)We remember the fish which we used to eat free in Egypt, the cucumbers and the melons and the leeks and the onions and the garlic, 6 but now (AU)our [q]appetite is gone. There is nothing at all [r]to look at except this manna.”
7 (AV)Now the manna was like coriander seed, and its appearance like that of (AW)bdellium. 8 The people would go about and gather it and grind it [s]between two millstones or beat it in the mortar, and boil it in the pot and make cakes with it; and its taste was as the taste of [t]cakes baked with oil. 9 (AX)When the dew fell on the camp at night, the manna would fall [u]with it.
The Complaint of Moses
10 Now Moses heard the people weeping throughout their families, each man at the doorway of his tent; and the anger of the Lord was kindled greatly, and [v]Moses was displeased. 11 (AY)So Moses said to the Lord, “Why have You [w]been so hard on Your servant? And why have I not found favor in Your sight, that You have laid the burden of all this people on me? 12 Was it I who conceived all this people? Was it I who brought them forth, that You should say to me, ‘Carry them in your bosom as a [x](AZ)nurse carries a nursing infant, to the land which (BA)You swore to their fathers’? 13 Where am I to get meat to give to (BB)all this people? For they weep before me, saying, ‘Give us meat that we may eat!’ 14 (BC)I alone am not able to carry all this people, because it is too [y]burdensome for me. 15 (BD)So if You are going to deal thus with me, please kill me at once, if I have found favor in Your sight, and do not let me see my wretchedness.”
Seventy Elders to Assist
16 The Lord therefore said to Moses, “Gather for Me (BE)seventy men from the elders of Israel, (BF)whom you know to be the elders of the people and their officers and bring them to the tent of meeting, and let them take their stand there with you. 17 (BG)Then I will come down and speak with you there, and I will take of (BH)the Spirit who is upon you, and will put Him upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with you, so that you will not bear it all alone. 18 Say to the people, ‘(BI)Consecrate yourselves for tomorrow, and you shall eat meat; for you have wept (BJ)in the ears of the Lord, saying, “Oh that someone would give us meat to eat! For we were well-off in Egypt.” Therefore the Lord will give you meat and you shall eat. 19 You shall eat, not one day, nor two days, nor five days, nor ten days, nor twenty days, 20 [z]but a whole month, until it comes out of your nostrils and becomes loathsome to you; because (BK)you have rejected the Lord who is among you and have wept before Him, saying, “Why did we ever leave Egypt?”’” 21 But Moses said, “The people, among whom I am, are 600,000 on foot; yet You have said, ‘I will give them meat, so that they may eat for a whole month.’ 22 Should flocks and herds be slaughtered for them, to be sufficient for them? Or should all the fish of the sea be gathered together for them, to be sufficient for them?” 23 The Lord said to Moses, “Is (BL)the Lord’s [aa]power limited? Now you shall see whether (BM)My word will [ab]come true for you or not.”
24 So Moses went out and (BN)told the people the words of the Lord. Also, he gathered seventy men of the elders of the people, and stationed them around the tent. 25 (BO)Then the Lord came down in the cloud and spoke to him; and He took of the Spirit who was upon him and placed Him upon the seventy elders. And when the Spirit rested upon them, they prophesied. But they did not do it again.
26 But two men had remained in the camp; the name of one was Eldad and the name of the [ac]other Medad. And (BP)the Spirit rested upon them (now they were among those who had been registered, but had not gone out to the tent), and they prophesied in the camp. 27 So a young man ran and told Moses and said, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.” 28 Then (BQ)Joshua the son of Nun, the attendant of Moses from his youth, said, “(BR)Moses, my lord, restrain them.” 29 But Moses said to him, “Are you jealous for my sake? (BS)Would that all the Lord’s people were prophets, that the Lord would put His Spirit upon them!” 30 Then Moses [ad]returned to the camp, both he and the elders of Israel.
The Quail and the Plague
31 (BT)Now there went forth a wind from the Lord and it brought quail from the sea, and let them fall beside the camp, about a day’s journey on this side and a day’s journey on the other side, all around the camp and [ae]about two [af]cubits deep on the surface of the ground. 32 The people [ag]spent all day and all night and all the next day, and gathered the quail (he who gathered least gathered ten [ah](BU)homers) and they spread them out for themselves all around the camp. 33 (BV)While the meat was still between their teeth, before it was chewed, the anger of the Lord was kindled against the people, and the Lord struck the people with a very severe plague. 34 So the name of that place was called [ai](BW)Kibroth-hattaavah, because there they buried the people who had been greedy. 35 From Kibroth-hattaavah (BX)the people set out for Hazeroth, and they [aj]remained at Hazeroth.
The Murmuring of Miriam and Aaron
12 Then Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses because of the Cushite woman whom he had married (for he had married a (BY)Cushite woman); 2 (BZ)and they said, “Has the Lord indeed spoken only through Moses? Has He not spoken through us as well?” And the Lord heard it. 3 (Now the man Moses was (CA)very humble, more than any man who was on the face of the earth.) 4 Suddenly the Lord said to Moses and Aaron and to Miriam, “You three come out to the tent of meeting.” So the three of them came out. 5 (CB)Then the Lord came down in a pillar of cloud and stood at the doorway of the tent, and He called [ak]Aaron and Miriam. When they had both come forward, 6 He said,
“Hear now My words:
If there is a prophet among you,
I, the Lord, shall make Myself known to him in a (CC)vision.
I shall speak with him in a (CD)dream.
7 “Not so, with (CE)My servant Moses,
(CF)He is faithful in all My household;
8 (CG)With him I speak mouth to mouth,
Even openly, and not in dark sayings,
And he beholds (CH)the form of the Lord.
Why then were you not afraid
To speak against My servant, against Moses?”
9 So the anger of the Lord burned against them and (CI)He departed. 10 But when the cloud had withdrawn from over the tent, behold, (CJ)Miriam was leprous, as (CK)white as snow. As Aaron turned toward Miriam, behold, she was leprous. 11 Then Aaron said to Moses, “Oh, my lord, I beg you, (CL)do not account this sin to us, in which we have acted foolishly and in which we have sinned. 12 Oh, do not let her be like one dead, whose flesh is half eaten away when he comes from his mother’s womb!” 13 Moses cried out to the Lord, saying, “O God, (CM)heal her, I pray!” 14 But the Lord said to Moses, “If her father had but (CN)spit in her face, would she not bear her shame for seven days? Let her be shut up for seven days (CO)outside the camp, and afterward she may be received again.” 15 So (CP)Miriam was shut up outside the camp for seven days, and the people did not move on until Miriam was received again.
16 Afterward, however, the people moved out from Hazeroth and camped in the wilderness of Paran.

Mark 15

Jesus before Pilate
15 (A)Early in the morning the chief priests with the elders and scribes and the whole [a](B)Council, immediately held a consultation; and binding Jesus, they led Him away and delivered Him to Pilate. 2 (C)Pilate questioned Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?” And He *answered him, “It is as you say.” 3 The chief priests began to accuse Him [b]harshly. 4 Then Pilate questioned Him again, saying, “Do You not answer? See how many charges they bring against You!” 5 But Jesus (D)made no further answer; so Pilate was amazed.
6 (E)Now at the feast he used to release for them any one prisoner whom they requested. 7 The man named Barabbas had been imprisoned with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the insurrection. 8 The crowd went up and began asking him to do as he had been accustomed to do for them. 9 Pilate answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?” 10 For he was aware that the chief priests had handed Him over because of envy. 11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd (F)to ask him to release Barabbas for them instead. 12 Answering again, Pilate said to them, “Then what shall I do with Him whom you call the King of the Jews?” 13 They shouted [c]back, “Crucify Him!” 14 But Pilate said to them, “Why, what evil has He done?” But they shouted all the more, “Crucify Him!” 15 Wishing to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas for them, and after having Jesus (G)scourged, he handed Him over to be crucified.
Jesus Is Mocked
16 (H)The soldiers took Him away into (I)the [d]palace (that is, the Praetorium), and they *called together the whole Roman [e](J)cohort. 17 They *dressed Him up in purple, and after twisting a crown of thorns, they put it on Him; 18 and they began to acclaim Him, “Hail, King of the Jews!” 19 They kept beating His head with a [f]reed, and spitting on Him, and kneeling and bowing before Him. 20 After they had mocked Him, they took the purple robe off Him and put His own garments on Him. And they *led Him out to crucify Him.
21 (K)They *pressed into service a passer-by coming from the country, Simon of Cyrene (the father of Alexander and (L)Rufus), to bear His cross.
The Crucifixion
22 (M)Then they *brought Him to the place (N)Golgotha, which is translated, Place of a Skull. 23 They tried to give Him (O)wine mixed with myrrh; but He did not take it. 24 And they *crucified Him, and *(P)divided up His garments among themselves, casting [g]lots for them to decide [h]what each man should take. 25 It was the [i](Q)third hour [j]when they crucified Him. 26 The inscription of the charge against Him [k]read, “(R)THE KING OF THE JEWS.”
27 They *crucified two robbers with Him, one on His right and one on His left. 28 [[l]And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “And He was numbered with transgressors.”] 29 Those passing by were [m]hurling abuse at Him, (S)wagging their heads, and saying, “Ha! You who are going to (T)destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, 30 save Yourself, and come down from the cross!” 31 In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes, were mocking Him among themselves and saying, “(U)He saved others; [n]He cannot save Himself. 32 Let this Christ, (V)the King of Israel, now come down from the cross, so that we may see and believe!” (W)Those who were crucified with Him were also insulting Him.
33 (X)When the [o](Y)sixth hour came, darkness [p]fell over the whole land until the [q](Z)ninth hour. 34 At the (AA)ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “(AB)Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” which is translated, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” 35 When some of the bystanders heard it, they began saying, “Behold, He is calling for Elijah.” 36 Someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink, saying, “[r]Let us see whether Elijah will come to take Him down.” 37 (AC)And Jesus uttered a loud cry, and breathed His last. 38 (AD)And the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. 39 (AE)When the centurion, who was standing [s]right in front of Him, saw [t]the way He breathed His last, he said, “Truly this man was [u]the Son of God!”
40 (AF)There were also some women looking on from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of [v]James (AG)the [w]Less and Joses, and (AH)Salome. 41 When He was in Galilee, they used to follow Him and [x](AI)minister to Him; and there were many other women who came up with Him to Jerusalem.
Jesus Is Buried
42 (AJ)When evening had already come, because it was (AK)the preparation day, that is, the day before the Sabbath, 43 Joseph of Arimathea came, a (AL)prominent member of the Council, who himself was (AM)waiting for the kingdom of God; and he (AN)gathered up courage and went in before Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus. 44 Pilate wondered if He was dead by this time, and summoning the centurion, he questioned him as to whether He was already dead. 45 And ascertaining this from (AO)the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph. 46 Joseph bought a linen cloth, took Him down, wrapped Him in the linen cloth and laid Him in a tomb which had been hewn out in the rock; and he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb. 47 (AP)Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses were looking on to see where He was laid.
